SANDAG Mileage Tax, Climate and Housing Clash in Mira Mesa

John Riley Project

San Diego County leaders are pushing for major changes in our region. Look in the crystal ball and we can see plans for more housing, more trolleys, more busses, more people, and now a per mile mileage tax. Can San Diego accommodate more growth? What do think of their plans to make this happen? It is Wednesday, February 22nd. Here is a roundup of news stories in and around San Diego County. Here is what John Riley thinks: Is SANDAG's Mileage Tax moral or practical? This mileage tax proposed by SANDAG is causing plenty of discussion for San Diegans. We are already paying property taxes, sales taxes, gas taxes and income taxes to fund roads, highways and freeways. Now they want to add another tax. Didn't SANDAG pass the TRANSNET sales tax increase decades ago to fund this? How are they going to charge per mile? Seems like we will either have GPS devices tracking our driving patterns and this raises valid concerns about privacy. Their plan is already charging a grandma in Rancho Bernardo a sales tax increase so a student from a rich family can take the trolley to college at a low price. Is that moral? Are trains and subways the right vision for the future? Or will self-driving electric vehicles offer a better solution that can function as individualized pods that get you right to your destination while also working in a swarm like mass transit? Climate change activists are suing to stop Mira Mesa's long-term housing plan Mira Mesa recently announced a 30-year growth plan and Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation, or CERF, is suing the City of San Diego because the plan does not match up with their climate plan for carbon emission reduction. Now climate goals and housing goals are stalled while lawyers sort this out. Are these groups counter productively harming their own interests? Will the GOP kill Social Security? Social Security has been in the news since the State of the Union address when President Biden accused the Republicans of wanting to slash Social Security spending. Sure, there are a few Republicans that want to do this, but do you think the GOP has the cajónes to actually do it? Is it in the GOP's best interest to cut spending for their senior citizen voter base? We break down the controversy and discuss the morality and mechanics of Social Security. Have you emailed moviemasters760@gmail.com yet? If not, write in with any comments, questions, or movies you'd like to hear the Movie Masters review. This episode catches the gang fresh out of catching "Missing," the standalone sequel to "Searching." Can a movie that takes place entirely on phone and computer screens sustain a near 2 hour run time? In addition to the regular review and analysis, there's no shortage of Easter Eggs that you'll be able to look out for on a rewatch or first watch. The concept of the "Regal Wrinkle" is introduced on the fly, as is the "MOTY." Up next is a limited unexpected San Diego-centric release called "The Wedding Hustler," which ran for a day or two at the local theater. Hear the gang's hyper-enthusiasm over discovering the local nature of the film whilst actually watching it together in an empty theater at what was ostensibly supposed to be the San Diego (world?) premiere. Hear even more of the gang's hyper-enthusiasm upon realizing that the film was made by and stars Filipinos, yet was ponderously not screened even once at the Mira Mesa location. Is one Movie Master truly falling in love with faith-based cinema? SOLO MISSION: the last remaining Movie Master to take on a solo mission went and watched "Broker," a South Korean film about selling babies. It is learned that Song Kang Ho, star of "Parasite" and "The Host," also leads this film. Learn who the second nominee for "MOTY" is. In the news, the Movie Masters take a look at the most recent round of cuts in terms of Regal theater closures around the nation this month. Not only does it have local implications, but it also changes the face of moviegoing in major cities and smaller markets imminently. Channing Tatum vehemently hated being in the "G.I. Joe" franchise: learn why. This episode closes out with a sneak peak at 6 locks for "Best Picture" and all of the other contenders at this year's Oscars, much to the delight of the same Movie Master who longs for more faith-based cinema. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rmmu/support

Plus, the uncertainty clouding California's solar marketplace could be settled this week as regulators consider a proposal that changes the rules for electricity generated by rooftop solar. And, to fight climate change and meet renewable energy goals, the Biden Administration has championed the opening up of federally-owned desert lands in California to develop massive renewable energy projects, like industrial-scale solar. Also, Imperial County often sits in the shadow of San Diego County, at the southern border with Mexico. That leaves room for mystery and misconceptions for a county whose population is 85% Latino, and lately leaning right to the Republican party. COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are rising dramatically across the nation. How deadly will this surge be? And what can we do to protect ourselves and our loved ones over the holidays? Next, when you think of San Diego's Mira Mesa neighborhood you might think of car-dependent strip malls and vast open spaces. But a recently approved blueprint could bring big changes to the neighborhood. Then, as Russia's war on Ukraine continues to rage, we bring you the story of a North County family torn apart by the war and U.S. immigration policy. Then, most commercial and residential property owners in North Park belong to a business district that pays for upkeep of the high-traffic neighborhood. Starting next month, they will pay an extra tax to pay for landscaping, sanitation cleanup, and hiring private security. Next, at this point, it's not clear if Elon Musk's $44 billion Twitter purchase will be able to make a go of it in the long run. But the buy-out has gotten a lot of people thinking about whether the world's social media platforms should remain in the hands of just a few billionaires. In late 2019, Gov. Gavin Newsom announced a new program to dramatically speed up the state's wildfire prevention work. But an investigation found the program hasn't resulted in a single completed project. Next, it's been a month since Little Italy resident Yan Li was shot and killed by law enforcement after being served with an eviction notice. Meanwhile, community members are demanding more information about what happened, while policing experts are questioning how the situation was handled and why it escalated so quickly. Then, San Diego spent 64% of federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act dollars on policing an investigation by The Guardian found. Then, an effort to ensure more safety for bicycle riders on San Diego streets was shut down in Mira Mesa last week, and its future is in doubt. After, San Diego State University scientists are working on a way to figure out if there are molecular traces of life on Mars. Finally, author Lela Lee talks about the latest installment, “Angry Little Asian Girl: Moments with My Mother,” in her popular comics series.

I'm not sure how many stages of coping there are, but when Greg Hess told his wife and family they were moving to San Diego to start one of the first “nano breweries” in the country—I'd bet they ran through most, if not all of them. Probably added one or two. Harris' brother, Mike, had the idea in 2010 to go even smaller than a microbrewery. Launched a brewery in an 800 square-foot cubby hole. It may not have sounded like a “sure thing,” but it sure became one. Now Mike Hess Brewing is one of the most recognizable names in local craft beer, with tasting rooms in North Park (the OG, opened in 2013), O.B., Imperial Beach, Seaport Village, and Walnut Creek (where the Hess clan is from). For today's podcast, he joins us under the metallic tower of funfear that is the Emperor, SeaWorld's new roller coaster—the fastest, tallest, and longest plunge coaster in California. To commemorate the unveiling at the tap, Hess Brewing created the Emperor Hazy IPA, which will be served exclusively at the park. A portion of the proceeds for the beer will go to Penguins International to fund their conservation, education, and research efforts for the species. We also talk about the future of Hess, including the deal they signed to revive the iconic location where Alpine Beer Co. was created—a 4,000 square-foot space with a 5,000 square-foot patio. They'll carry on the tradition of having a beer wonderland in the nearby hills of San Diego. In “Hot Plates,” Mabel's Gone Fishing–an oyster and gin shop from the beloved local owners of The Rose natural wine bar—is making its long-awaited debut in North Park soon. L.A.'s famed breakfast tacos joint, Homestate Tacos, is landing in the Freeman Collective in South Oceanside, joining BlackMarket Bakery, Northside Shack, Corner Pizza, and Artifex Brewing. The Freeman project should be a hangout for a long, long while. In Sherman Heights, Cafe X is opened by a mother-daughter duo in the cultural hub that is 1835 Studios—a spot for food trucks, art galleries, community doings. And a while back we did the hunt for the best birria in San Diego, and El Prieto was our personal favorite—a food truck in the parking lot of a muffler shop by the border. Well, they just opened a second spot in Mira Mesa and you should go immediately. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” Troy pays homage to a San Diego icon of brunch and points you to the liquid obscenity that is the bloody Mary at Hash House A-Go-Go (pair it with the sage fried chicken with polenta and fried leeks). David recognizes the continuing evolution and betterment of San Diego mainstay, Crazee Burger, and Greg Hess hails the almighty Rocky's Crown Pub. See ya next week.

Scott Sturgill serves as the CEO of Durable Safety Products where he has built a very successful safety company that has employees locally and throughout the USA. Scott recently served as the Chairman of the Board for the Greater Sanford Regional Chamber of Commerce. Under his leadership businesses are thriving in the region and new businesses continue to open. Scott became involved with politics after seeing firsthand how high taxes and red tape impact entrepreneurs. He is very vocal and takes a strong stand against wasteful spending and demands that politicians must adhere to the same rules as everyone else. Scott is focused on removing government barriers to private-sector job creation, economic growth, cutting government spending, improving healthcare and running government with a business mentality. A 4th Generation Seminole County resident Scott and his wife, Tracy reside in Sanford with their two daughters. Listen as we get to know Scott and his worldview and stance on the important issues of the day! ********************** In the second 1/2 hour I will be joined by John Horst. John Horst is U.S. Congressional candidate in California's 52nd District. Check him out at JohnHorstForCongress.com. John Horst is a Cybersecurity Engineer with over 20 years experience helping civilian and military leaders succeed with secure, cutting-edge information technology. One of four children of a Navy family, John was raised in San Diego, graduating from Saint Augustine High School in 1985. He and his wife Pauline married in 1995 and bought their Mira Mesa home in 1997. 20 years later, they have raised two boys in Mira Mesa and will be sending them off to college soon. Over those 20 years, John has given thousands of hours to various volunteer groups in his community. John was elected to two terms on the Mira Mesa Community Planning Group, serving as Secretary for five years and Chairman for three. John has a proven track record of practical solutions and successful community advocacy at all levels of government. His unique background gives John an unmatched grasp of how local problems span multiple levels of government. Practical solutions require leadership which is willing to work across both the political aisle as well as across various levels of government. John is committed to a principle articulated by President Ronald Reagan – it is remarkable how much can be accomplished when you do not care who gets the credit. Like in the first 1/2 hour, John and I will run down his stance on a laundry list of issues!
