Allen Rupp is a seasoned fly tier with over 35 years of experience, renowned for his precision and dedication to the craft. As the founder of Fly On The Water, he offers high-quality, hand-tied flies and imparts his knowledge through instructional classes. Significantly, Allen was mentored by the legendary Dave Whitlock, who personally taught him to tie patterns like the NearNuff Crayfish and Sculpin. This mentorship has deeply influenced Allen's approach, allowing him to continue Whitlock's legacy by teaching these patterns to new generations of anglers. So much history in this place. It's where brewers came up with one of the beers that put San Diego on the national map. It's where a person signed a deal for a billion dollars and sold to a multinational corporation. And it's where an indie brewer bought it back, and took it into the new age. The place is the palace of beer that is Ballast Point in Miramar. The beer is Sculpin IPA. For this podcast, we sat down with five evolutions of Sculpin in front of us—from grapefruit Sculpin to a Aloha Sculpin—with one of our favorite people in the city, Jeff Lozano. Technically the “ambassador” of Ballast Point, Jeff is the voice you hear in the Ballast Point commercials when you're watching the Padres games. His voice is made for this, like if a cigarette and a late-night radio DJ had a lovechild. Ballast Point just made a serious investment on the food side of the house at all their locations, too, hiring culinary director Tommy Dimella. I'll say this. Go to Miramar. Work your way through the evolution of Sculpin like we did. Order two things from his menu: the Double-Stack Angus Smash Burger (white American cheese, BP special sauce, pepperoncini, lettuce, tomato—basically a real chef's take on a Bic Mac), and… arguably the star… the whipped goat cheese (made creamier with labneh, then topped with olive oil and cumin-spiced honey, strawberries, and seeded lavash cracker). It's the Summer of Sculpin (locals know that the real San Diego summer starts in August and goes through October). It was pretty much nonstop one-liners and laughs, but Jeff also runs us through the about beer and the food scene in San Diego and gives us some hard and useful science about why certain beers taste better with certain foods. In news, we talk about the opening of Madi, the all-day brunch joint from the Madison on Park people; the upcoming Botanica, an NFT art bar (you can buy NFTs of art on display) based around gin from the restaurant group that brought Tahona and Wormwood; Fairplay, a new concept from the Fernside crew coming to the spot vacated by beloved Toronado; and North Park's first ever (we think, correct us if we're wrong) rooftop bar, Dollie's at Hoxton. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” David re-fell in love with Craft & Commerce; Jeff raves about old-school San Diego classic, Bully's East Steakhouse; and Troy was in a soup dumpling mood and pointing to the favorite he found in his citywide search for xiao long baos, Facing East. Go to Ballast. Spend an afternoon in an icon. Also search out Jeff Lozano. Make him talk to you. He's funny as hell. Thanks for listening, y'all.

David, Marie and Troy are still at our sponsor, Home Brew Mart. Rumor has it David brought a cot and this is where he lives now. Understandable. The Linda Vista store is where the city's first bootstrap scientists got all the ingredients, materials, recipes, rumors, and know-how to start the craft beer revolution in San Diego. It's also home to Ballast Point—makers of one Sculpin IPA, one of the most famous craft beers in existence—who's celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. Colby Chandler—the second-longest serving employee who helped create Sculpin way back when—will share a few pints and some stories of craft beer's days in the manger. This week we talk to the creators and host of a new documentary film, Beer City: San Diego. Host Aubree Miller (who's also the creative director of Amplified Ale Works) and producer Dave Wadsworth spent three years documenting San Diego's craft beer world, talking to the brewers, owners, and personalities who helped build the culture. The film also features and serves as tribute to longtime craft beer supporter and eminently great human being, Nate Soroko, who passed away recently. Some of the proceeds of the film's premiere party (Aug. 5 at The Casbah) will go to Nate's family. In Hot Plates, we cover Pop Pie Co. and Stella Jean's Ice Cream, which is opening a new spot in one of San Diego's original neighborhoods. We discuss the boom of the Mexican stew, birria, now that everyone's going nuts for Mike's Red Tacos, a new birria food truck in Morena. Plus, one San Diego bar made it into Esquire's annual “Best Bars in America.” For Two People, $50, Troy is still knee-deep in donuts and shares his story about sitting down with the owner of the iconic VG Donut (get the apple fritter) in Cardiff. David suggests hitting up Garibaldi, the speakeasy-ish spot inside the InterContinental Hotel downtown. Aubree reluctantly points people to her favorite natural wine bar in South Park, The Rose. Later, the three discuss their favorite hops and Colby chats about the 2005 origin of flagship IPA, Sculpin.Chuck Silva: Chuck Silva is an American Brewers Guild graduate who has spent 18 years brewing in San Diego (1998-2015) with the last 11 notably at Green Flash Brewing, well known for poignant hoppy beers, Belgian-inspired creations, barrel aged stout, wild ales and many more before moving on to ignite his very own passion project, Silva Brewing. Other breweries included in his San Diego tenure include Hang Ten Brewing Co., Hops! Bistro & Brewery, and Karl Strauss Brewing Co. Chuck is currently operating Silva Brewing with wife MJ in a small (3,000 sqft) Paso Robles facility with a 10bbl Brewhouse producing less than 1,000 bbls/year. Beer profiles range from fresh hop infused delights to uniquely wild ales like the latest release “ve va che”, convergent French & Belgian influenced styles, fruited tart brews, new versions of classic styles like Hefeweizen, Kolsch, Altbier, Smoked Porter and Pilsner, plus stouts that are barrel aged to perfection! Ever inspired, you will discover Chuck’s wine country influenced beers at Silva Brewing such as The Pink Stuff and new release The Bruewt. Not one to be idle on the creative front, Chuck and wife MJ are working on a new passion project, Amok Cellars, a winery operating in the same space as Silva Brewing. More fun creations to follow! Pat McIlhenney: Pat McIlhenney created the Alpine beer company in 1999. He’s a multiple World Beer Cup and GABF medal winner and the inventor of awesome beers like Pure Hoppiness, Duet, Nelson, Chez Monieux, Odin's Raven, Great, Exponential Hoppiness, Mandarin Nectar, McIlhenney's Irish Red and HFS. Pat is currently the part owner of Mcilhenney Brewing Company. He is married to Valerie McIlhenney and is the father of Shawn McIlhenney. We’re here at Ballast Point Brewing in Little Italy, and today, we have Colby Chandler, Ballast Point’s vice president and specialty brewer. Colby is the second-longest employee of Ballast Point—he’s been with the company for 23 years. He was involved in the creation of their award-winning flagship beer, Sculpin, where he took two gold-medal-winning IPAs and melded the recipes into one. His version of their two beers is the Sculpin you know today. Today’s special guest is Chef Travis Swikard. Travis is opening one of the city's most anticipated restaurants, Callie, in the East Village, which we talk about in the Neighborhood Guide in the March issue. Callie is filling the space on Tenth Avenue where Bottega Americano was. Travis grew up in Santee, and he recently moved back to San Diego after working in New York City with acclaimed French chef Daniel Boulud for over a decade. Travis wanted to get back to local, fresh ingredients and a place to raise his two kids. Callie is his first solo restaurant. For Two People, $50, Travis chose Don Bravo, a small taco shop in La Jolla. David chose Tabu Shabu in North Park, and Erin liked happy hour at The Prado. Troy’s pick this week are the frittelle cacio e pepe (savory Italian donuts) from Cori Pastificio Trattoria in North Park, which he reviewed for our upcoming April issue. In Hot Plates, we talk about Prep Kitchen closing its doors in Little Italy, and Rock Bottom ending its run after being in UTC for over 20 years. The popular Food Network show "Restaurant Impossible" is taping at Kaiserhof, the German Restaurant in Ocean Beach. Normal Heights is getting a “hipster 7-Eleven” that’s going to open soon, complete with craft beer, a fro-yo bar, taco shop, and of course, kombucha on tap. We’re only one of the three cities in the country to get the company’s new “Evolution” stores. Thanks for listening, and we’d love to hear from you! Call us at 619-744-0535 and leave a message. Or if you’re too shy to call, you can email HappyHalfHour@sdmag.com. You can give us your recommendations for Two People, $50, tell us about any news happening in San Diego’s culinary world, or let us know who you’d like to hear featured as a guest on the podcast.

Static Site Generators are becoming very popular in web development and they come in many shapes and sizes which cater for different website requirements. Many web development programming languages have their own flavours of static site generators such as Jeklly for Ruby, Sculpin for PHP and Gatsby for JavaScript. Oliver and I have both built many websites using static site generators and are aware of some of the pros and cons to using them. We discuss this what static site generators are, when to use them and more importantly when not too. GUEST BIO: Beau is a technology Strategy Consultant and has been a professional polyglot programmer since 1998.  He hosts Astrocasts and is co-host of That Podcast.  Beau is an active open-sourcer, creator of Sculpin and helped to create Stack PHP.  He is also a serving Core Committee member for the PHP Framework Interoperability Group.   EPISODE DESCRIPTION: Phil’s guest on today’s show is Beau Simensen who is currently working as a freelance Strategy Consultant. His main professional language is PHP, but he is actually a polyglot programmer. Beau is well known for being the host of the Astrocasts podcast and the co-host of the That podcast. He is also an experienced conference speaker and a serving Core Committee member for the PHP Framework Interoperability Group. Since 2012, he has been an active member of the Open Soured community. Beau is the creator Sculpin and played an important role in creating Stack PHP. KEY TAKEAWAYS: (00.48) – So Beau, can I ask you to expand on that brief intro and tell us a little bit more about yourself? Beau explains that since 2012 he has been involved with the PHP community and working on open source projects. During that time he has spoken at many conferences and had a lot of fun doing so. PHP is his main professional language and Dev Ops his field. (1.49) – Can you please share a unique career tip with the I.T. career audience? Beau wishes he had found people who encouraged and pushed him at an earlier stage in his career. Before 2012, he was basically working alone without any outside validation, guidance or encouragement. At times it was hard going. (2.31) - How would you encourage other people to go about doing that? There are lots of ways to do it but attending conferences and meetups is a particularly good approach. On occasion, coworkers will also be able to help out. But generally speaking people who you do not work directly with will be able to help you more effectively. (3.10) – Can you tell us about your worst career moment? And what you learned from that experience. Before he started programming, Beau worked for an ISP in a relatively big town in North Dakota. He was trying to solve a problem, possibly trying to stop a zombie process. Using some documentation he had found Beau ended up typing kill space dash one into the system. Unfortunately, he did that. At which point the entire bank of 100 modems went completely silent. His heart sank; he knew he had just crashed the entire system. It was a tough way to be reminded that actions have consequences. You have to be 100% sure you know what you are doing before taking action, especially when you are going to impact other people’s lives so much. (5.05) – What was your best career moment? For Beau that was the demo he did at wearables Dev Con in 2014. At the time he was involved in a project that was developing sensors in shoes. They wanted to integrate their sensors with Google Glass. That meant getting them to speak to each other via Bluetooth. But, the Bluetooth connection didn’t have the necessary networking stack to do so. You couldn’t actually get to an IP address. But, in the end, Beau did manage to figure things out and tether them together. He was sitting in the Google Glass meetup at the conference and on the spot decided to put together a short presentation about this little project. He spent just 15 minutes putting it together. Naturally, he was nervous, but he still delivered his demo and presentation. For a change, the demo actually worked and he was very well received, which felt great. It was a real career highlight for Beau. (7.48) – Can you tell us what excites you about the future of the IT industry and careers? The fact that there is always stuff Beau does not know is something he finds exciting about the industry. He loves the fact he is constantly learning new things. Beau is especially excited to hear about new developers putting together amazing things simply by mashing their own code with existing stuff. In under a year, some people are already capable of  creating great things. For example, the person who has just put together an American Sign Language translator. They have just made it possible to play a video and have it translated and visually signed for the user. All of this without the program having to understand what the content is about, to begin with. (9.19) - Are there any particular technologies that are of interest to you? Beau explains that he is getting to a point where he is not as curious about the technologies anymore. He is more interested in everything else that goes around it, more the business side of things. Beau really likes figuring out what kind of outcomes people are looking for. Whether the solution is built using Rails, PHP or Node JS is not that important. What matters is that the outcome is right for the end users. Finding different ways to deploy code is what he is focused on, right now. (11.26) – What drew you to a career in IT? The fact that he could make money doing something that he loved is why Beau chose a career in IT. He had loved all things tech as a kid. His parents were very supportive of this, so he got deeply involved in HTML, deploying dial-up networks, all kinds of things. So, he knew he loved this sort of thing and was very happy to learn that he could make money doing it. (12.15) – What is the best career advice you have ever received? For Beau it was not advice as such. A friend of his once said to him who do you validate your ideas with? Beau realized he did not really have an answer for him. That conversation highlighted a blind spot for Beau. Within a year he had changed his approach. Now he asks others what they think and test what he is doing and where he is going a lot more. (13.06) – If you were to begin your IT career again, right now, what would you do? Beau says that he feels like he is starting over again, pretty frequently. His work as a freelance consultant means he is always doing something new, often, starting from scratch. If he were to start his career again he would still want to end up doing the same thing. But, he would probably get involved with the community, at an earlier stage. (13.37) – What are you currently focusing on in your career? Right now, Beau is trying to gain a better understanding of the type of projects he wants to work on. When you are a freelancer it is all too easy to just grab whatever comes along. That is OK, but, at some stage you need to pause and start chasing the work that really interests you. (14.29) – What is the number one non-technical skill that has helped you the most in your IT career? Beau feels that listening is his best non-technical skill. It is certainly one he has been trying to develop more lately. Most programmers have a tendency not to want to spend a lot of time talking. They want someone to tell them what to do, then leave them alone while they do it. Beau is working to get away from being like that. He likes to sit down with people and help them to figure out what it is that they want. This is the best way to be sure that you are building the right thing. You need to be able to understand the underlying problem that they are trying to solve. If you do not do that you are going to end up building something that is nearly right, but not quite. Or worse, something that is nothing like what they want. Phil says that is certainly what used to happen with the traditional delivery approaches. (16.12) – Phil asks Beau to share a final piece of career advice with the audience. Get connected is the most important piece of IT career advice Beau wants to share. Having peers and mentors you can bounce things off is hugely beneficial. They do not necessarily have to be actively looking at your code to be able to help you a great deal. Other people provide you with a fresh and diffeent perspective, which makes it easier for you to keep moving in the right direction. BEST MOMENTS: (2.29) BEAU – “I wish I'd learned earlier on how to find people that encourage and push me," (4.08) BEAU – “Actions have consequences so make sure you don't try to do things you aren't 100% sure about" (8.16) BEAU – “Every day I'm hearing about something new or interesting” (14.43) BEAU – "Listening is one of those skills where you can think that you're doing really well at it. Until you find out that you aren’t. " (16.20) BEAU – "Find peers and mentors, they do not have to be actively looking at your code to be able to help you.” CONTACTBEAU: Twitter: https://twitter.com/beausimensen LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/simensen/ Website: https://beausimensen.com/

Craft Brew News – 1/18/19Maryland’s Flying Dog Brewery Hopes to Release Cannabis-Infused BeerPending approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, Flying Dog Brewery and Green Leaf Medical Cannabis plan to release Hop Chronic IPA, the state of Maryland’s first THC-infused non-alcoholic beer. The two Frederick, Maryland-based companies announced today that they intend to make Hop Chronic available to the state’s medical cannabis patients as an alternative to smoking or vaping as early as this summer.Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso stated, “For people who don’t want to smoke, don’t want to vape, there’s no path of experiencing the therapeutic benefits,” “It feels good to be a part of creating a delicious IPA where people who want to experience cannabis that way can do that.”However, Flying Dog and Green Leaf face a potential regulatory roadblock as the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has yet to allow companies to produce or sell edible cannabis products.Nevertheless, Caruso stated that he’s optimistic the product will be approved since similar offerings have already received the go ahead in other states, like Colorado, where Ceria, Inc. founder and Blue Moon creator Keith Villa launched a similar product in December. If approved, Flying Dog would join a number of beer manufacturers that have already entered the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with Canadian cannabis companies. Other U.S. beer manufacturers, including Heineken-owned Lagunitas and Craft Brew Alliance (31.4 percent owned by A-B InBev), have experimented or explored the possibility of THC- and CBD-infused beverages.Ballast Point Sets Opening Date for Downtown Disney TaproomA year after announcing plans to open a taproom in Anaheim’s downtown Disney district at the Disneyland Resort, San Diego’s Ballast Point’s brewpub has set an opening date of Wednesday, January 16.The Constellation Brands-owned craft brewery said the new taproom will feature a 3-barrel brewing system and offer more than 50 styles of Ballast Point beer across 100 tap lines.Constellation Brands craft and specialty president Ben Dollard said, via a press release. “This new location also gives our passionate brewing and culinary teams the perfect place to test new and inventive offerings, as we welcome longtime Ballast Point fans and introduce new guests to our brand,” The Disney taproom is Ballast Point’s ninth in the U.S.Braxton Brewing Announces $5 Million ExpansionKentucky’s Braxton Brewing Company has embarked on a $5 million expansion that will include the purchase of the building where its brewery is currently situated, as well as the construction of a rooftop bar and the installation of a new canning line.Braxton co-founder and CEO Jake Rouse said the construction of the new 5,000 sq. ft. rooftop bar would cost about $1.5 million. The craft beer maker, which launched in 2015, will also spend approximately $2 million to acquire the Covington, Kentucky, property where the brewery is located, and another $1.5 million to expand production capabilities.According to Rouse, Braxton made about 17,000 barrels of beer in 2018, up from 11,500 in 2017. The company expects to produce upwards of 25,000 barrels in 2019 but will have the capacity to make 30,000 barrels. In late December, Braxton announced the launch of Vive Hard Seltzer. The product will be sold in 12 oz. slim cans, which led the company to invest in a new canning line capable of filling those packages. In addition to the Vive Hard Seltzer line, Braxton recently launched a new year-round New England-style IPA, called Tropic Flare. Four-packs of 12 oz. cans sell for a suggested retail price of $9.99.San Diego Brewers Guild, Lyft Share Most Requested Brewery DestinationsThe San Diego Brewers Guild and Lyft shared their list of most traveled craft brewery destinations of 2018. Season 3, Episode 51 – This week, we find out who will rein supreme in the battle between the Light side of the sea, and the Dark side. Does anyone else smell fish? What is that? Oh, pshht…I know what it is. It’s a Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing, and an Invasive Species from Beachwood Brewing! We invited both of these underwater dwellers to battle it out on the show this week, with hopes of figuring out which one of these is the bigger fish to fry.  The Beachwood/Ballast Point Showdow A little back story: once upon a time, Ballast Point Brewing out of San Diego, California, was one the most respected craft brewers in the San Diego beer scene, until the company was sold to Constellation Brands, Inc. for a cool one billion clams (snicker). Since then, many beer geeks have written the brewery off as a “sell out” and stopped buying their products, and some have decided to overlook the buyout and just focus on the beer. But, just because a brewery sells to a larger macro brewery or company doesn’t necessarily mean the quality of their product will suffer, although sometimes recipes and practices tend to change over time to drive down cost and increase profit. In the case of Ballast Point, the beers are still pretty great for the most part.  Enter Beachwood Brewing. Beachwood has been very vocal about their brewing independence and dedication to true craft beer. In a very tongue-in-cheek move, they decided to brew a series of beers that were inspired by Ballast Point’s Sculpin IPA and variants thereof, that positioned Beachwood to both comment on and snub Ballast Point and their wildly popular fruited beers. While they didn’t come out and blatantly say “fuck you,” to Ballast Point (for whatever reason, outside of the obvious craft vs. macro battle cry), the line of beers they brewed and subsequently named “Invasive Species” (with a depiction of a dead fish on the beer bottle’s label) sure did imply it. Fight! So, here we are. We purchased the freshest Sculpin IPA and variants of Sculpin IPA (and Even Keel) that we could find and put them up against the two-week-old bottles of Beachwood’s Invasive Species IPA and variants. Who will prevail? You can probably guess who we’re rooting for…  BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. Beau is the maintainer of the Sculpin PHP static site generator and was until recently a voting member of PHP-FIG. Rebekah is the artist known as ninjagrl, whom I had heard of because of her #ossart, open-source-inspired work. Beau has promised to come back on the podcast soon to explain all about the PSR 7 HTTP message standard interfaces, but I didn't want to pass up this chance to meet such interesting people! This week we are very lucky to have Beau Simensen on the show to discuss all things Stack, Sculpin and podcasting. We start off the discussion with how (new dad) Michael is getting on, and if knowing how to code helps at all when having a baby. Fraser on the other hand has had an eventful weekend cycling to France (for fun) and began work on a new project in C#. Following on from this we touch upon how Beau got into programming, and his progression through Perl to PHP. We then move on to how Stack and Sculpin came to being, and the problems they are each trying to solve. Finally we talk about an upcoming Symfony Live event in London that he will be presenting at (on Stack), and Edd will be attending.

00:00:00 - This week is dedicated to an interview Ryan did with PhD student Zeka Kuspa, who studies environmental toxicology as it affects California condor restoration. The first part of the interview covers the basics of California condors, their conservation history, and the problems they face due to lead poisoning.   00:39:01 - It take us a little bit but we do finally get to the drinks. Zeka, per her policy of only drinking beers with animals on the label, is enjoying a Sculpin from Ballast Point Brewing. Ryan, thinking that raptors often have those cool little hoods on, has the Blindfold Black IPA from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.   00:43:17 - The secondpart of our interview focuses a bit about their project called Condor Watch which is part of Zooniverse and helps researchers get the public involved in analyzing the data from California condor camera traps. You, yes you, can sign up today to be a part of helping keep California's burgeoning condor population healthy and growing strong!   00:47:15 -PaleoPOWs are a lot like vultures, they scavenge the really tasty bits, and tend to live in groups. In the except that proves the rule, only one PaleoPOW this week in the form of a recurring donation from Francis D. Thanks for supporting the show, Francis!     Thanks for listening and be sure to check out the Brachiolope Media Network for more great science podcasts!     Music for this week's show: My Turtledove - Zeka Kuspa (definitely the first and probably only time a guest will provide the song for their interview)

Trying out a slightly more professional format with questions, Phil manages to avoid talking over everyone. Winner! This show has a history of talking about FIG stuff as it is hard to avoid. The group is working on so much cool stuff and prominent figures of the community are involved. We got two more prominent figures, who also happen to be involved with FIG stuff: Beau Simensen lead developer of Sculpin and Michael Dowling lead developer of the wonderful HTTP library Guzzle, who also works at AWS on their PHP SDK. We discussed each of their projects, some of the plans for the future, specifically whats coming up in Guzzle 4 and how that all ties in with the new PSR-7: HTTP Message, currently in “Draft” status. Conveniently Beau, Michael and Phil are the three FIG members who make up the working group for PSR-7 who will all be working to get this “Accepted”. See, it all fits! What are your thoughts on using Bash as a provisioner? Why or why not use it? – Edmund Zynda Thoughts on the new github Atom editor – Matthew Reschke Beau & Michael, you’ve both been managing open source packages (OSP) for a few years. What’s the best and worst part of managing an OSP? – Jeremy Lindblom @Michael do you think a simple HTTP Server interface would fit PSR-7? That would be a good replacement for StackPHP, no? – Marco Pivetta I’m curious about how this HTTP client relates to the pecl/http extension. There’s been talk in the past of including that extension in the core. – Ben Ramsey What different circumstances dictate how long a PSR takes to get from proposal to blessed by FIG? – Edmund Zynda So, plenty for you folks to watch here on the YouTube video!
