It's the Super Bowl preview here on Brewstilled! I'm previewing the coming Super Bowl between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Los Angeles Rams. I will also have an NFL update with recent news developments in the NFL. Is a storm coming to the NFL? Between the recent allegations with the Washington Commanders, Brian Flores lawsuit filed against the NFL, and allegations of coaches being asked to tank games for a higher draft position, the NFL is indeed headed towards a wild ride. The question is, how will they resolve it? The NFL coaching carousel is concluded as all NFL teams in need of an NFL head coach now have new coaches. The Denver Broncos are up for sale, and I'll discuss why I believe a total of 4 NFL teams may come up for sale this year. It's all here on Brewstilled with an Imperial Stout beer pairing!

Correction:At the 28:00 mark; we are talking about Oxygen in beer. Harrison mentions "500 Parts Per Million" of DO (Dissolved Oxygen). The correct measurement is Parts Per Billion. (Reference) Huge Cheers to Greig M for bringing this to our attention! What We’re Drinking:Barrel-Aged Narwhal by Sierra Nevada BrewingABV: 11.9%IBU: 50Notes: Barrel-Aged Narwhal is our deliciously dark Imperial Stout aged in Kentucky bourbon barrels. Barrel aging is a strange science; it mellows some characteristics of the original beer while intensifying others. Narwhal’s aggressive roastiness has calmed, but the rich, chocolate-like malt backbone is brought to the fore. Black as midnight, this intense stout is complex with notes of cocoa and espresso balanced with hints of vanilla and toasted coconut from the oak casks. Nearly as rare as it’s nautical namesake, try Barrel-Aged Narwhal while you can because like the creature itself, it will soon dive into the depths and leave nary a trace behind.Jon's Cellar: Black Ops by Brooklyn Brewery (2017 Version)ABV: 10.7%IBU: 70Notes: Intense Russian imperial stout aged in bourbon barrels and 100% bottle refermented.Harrison's Cellar: Big Bad Baptist by Epic Brewing Co (Release #33)ABV: 11.8%IBU: N/ANotes: One Big Bad Imperial Stout with Cocoa nibs and Coffee beans. Each season's release uses a different dark roasted coffee.Jenn's Cellar: Barrel Aged Wee Heavy by AleSmith Brewing Company (2014 Version)ABV: 10%IBU: N/ANotes: A classic Scotch Ale. Scotch ales are typically sweet and malty, with a very subdued dose of hops– just enough to provide balance. AleSmith Wee Heavy is a wonderful interpretation of this traditional Scotch style. A year spent in bourbon barrels adds another layer of rich sweetness.Badge Notes:Any version of these base beers (Any Year) should still unlock the Drinking Socially Podcast badge.SponsorGregslist offers realtime updated information on Bars/Restaurants/Stores/More who are open during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Episode 168 - Drunk By Dawn - An Ash VS Evil Dead Retrospective Pt. 1 To tell you the truth, we here at The Buzzed Kill Podcast aren't too concerned with everything that's going on in the world right now. Climate change, political division, war, The Bachelor Season 24. The reason we're not concerned is because unlike most people of the world, who seem to think that these problems are manmade, we know that they are actually the work of pure, otherworldly evil. An evil so powerful that there is only one who can vanquish it for good. We have faith that our savior will descend upon this malevolent force, and restore balance to our world once and for all. And on that day, trembling in shadow of the great liberator, evil shall know the name Ashley J. Williams. Wow, we hope you're as excited for that day as we are. In the mean time, grab some Evil Dead Red from AleSmith Brewing Company, and join us as we discuss the first season of Ash vs. Evil Dead. Cheers! Follow us! Craft Brew News – 1/18/19Maryland’s Flying Dog Brewery Hopes to Release Cannabis-Infused BeerPending approval from the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission, Flying Dog Brewery and Green Leaf Medical Cannabis plan to release Hop Chronic IPA, the state of Maryland’s first THC-infused non-alcoholic beer. The two Frederick, Maryland-based companies announced today that they intend to make Hop Chronic available to the state’s medical cannabis patients as an alternative to smoking or vaping as early as this summer.Flying Dog CEO Jim Caruso stated, “For people who don’t want to smoke, don’t want to vape, there’s no path of experiencing the therapeutic benefits,” “It feels good to be a part of creating a delicious IPA where people who want to experience cannabis that way can do that.”However, Flying Dog and Green Leaf face a potential regulatory roadblock as the Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission has yet to allow companies to produce or sell edible cannabis products.Nevertheless, Caruso stated that he’s optimistic the product will be approved since similar offerings have already received the go ahead in other states, like Colorado, where Ceria, Inc. founder and Blue Moon creator Keith Villa launched a similar product in December. If approved, Flying Dog would join a number of beer manufacturers that have already entered the cannabis space. Large beer companies such as Anheuser-Busch InBev (Tilray), Constellation Brands (Canopy Growth) and Molson Coors (Hexo) have each struck partnerships with Canadian cannabis companies. Other U.S. beer manufacturers, including Heineken-owned Lagunitas and Craft Brew Alliance (31.4 percent owned by A-B InBev), have experimented or explored the possibility of THC- and CBD-infused beverages.Ballast Point Sets Opening Date for Downtown Disney TaproomA year after announcing plans to open a taproom in Anaheim’s downtown Disney district at the Disneyland Resort, San Diego’s Ballast Point’s brewpub has set an opening date of Wednesday, January 16.The Constellation Brands-owned craft brewery said the new taproom will feature a 3-barrel brewing system and offer more than 50 styles of Ballast Point beer across 100 tap lines.Constellation Brands craft and specialty president Ben Dollard said, via a press release. “This new location also gives our passionate brewing and culinary teams the perfect place to test new and inventive offerings, as we welcome longtime Ballast Point fans and introduce new guests to our brand,” The Disney taproom is Ballast Point’s ninth in the U.S.Braxton Brewing Announces $5 Million ExpansionKentucky’s Braxton Brewing Company has embarked on a $5 million expansion that will include the purchase of the building where its brewery is currently situated, as well as the construction of a rooftop bar and the installation of a new canning line.Braxton co-founder and CEO Jake Rouse said the construction of the new 5,000 sq. ft. rooftop bar would cost about $1.5 million. The craft beer maker, which launched in 2015, will also spend approximately $2 million to acquire the Covington, Kentucky, property where the brewery is located, and another $1.5 million to expand production capabilities.According to Rouse, Braxton made about 17,000 barrels of beer in 2018, up from 11,500 in 2017. The company expects to produce upwards of 25,000 barrels in 2019 but will have the capacity to make 30,000 barrels. In late December, Braxton announced the launch of Vive Hard Seltzer. The product will be sold in 12 oz. slim cans, which led the company to invest in a new canning line capable of filling those packages. In addition to the Vive Hard Seltzer line, Braxton recently launched a new year-round New England-style IPA, called Tropic Flare. Four-packs of 12 oz. cans sell for a suggested retail price of $9.99.San Diego Brewers Guild, Lyft Share Most Requested Brewery DestinationsThe San Diego Brewers Guild and Lyft shared their list of most traveled craft brewery destinations of 2018. Get ready, folks! This week Ryan and Alex try the hefty twelve-percenter that is AleSmith’s Speedway Stout. A 2014 Gold Medalist in the San Diego International Beer Competition, Speedway Stout has become a staple in the imperial stout beer community. It’s a beer dominated by chocolate and roasted malts, supported by toffee, caramel, and a slight fruitiness, and contains a hefty dose of locally-roasted coffee from Ryan Bros. Coffee Inc. added to each batch. It also happens to be our very own, Jared’s, favorite beer. But will our dynamic duo feel the same?? (ooh, a cliff hanger...) We’ll also be calling our favorite women to call drunk, our girlfriends! That’s right folks, they are real, and they’re going to help us give out some much needed advice. This week on FDB - we give our support to a very proper gorilla, wonder what it would be like to host the somehow still running, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, discuss some not-so-ironclad beer laws, and much more! Now please kick back, and enjoy another sit down with Friends Drink Beer. In this episode, we run the first of three final races to be held at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. It is the SuperHeroes Half Marathon Weekend. This is our favorite RunDisney race series and we are so sad to see them on hiatus (hopefully and not canceled for good). RUN This is the SpiderMan 5K. The course is great through the parks and beautifully lit up with characters all along the course and people cheering you on all along the way, both employees and fans of Disneyland! Here's a map of the course we took: EAT Welcome to one of our favorite all-time restaurants, which has also been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, Sabroso! Actually located in Garden Grove, about 10 minutes away from Disneyland, Guy Fieri has featured some amazing dishes from here, but we have a breakfast dish that is out of this world! DRINK We took off to Manhattan Beach for this one and stopped at the Tin Roof Bistro. It is such a quaint little place minutes from the beach. They have great craft beers on tap and we featured the Nut Brown Ale from AleSmith Brewing Company out of San Diego, California. THAT'S A WRAP! Thank you for watching! Season 3, Episode 27 – This week, beers from AleSmith Brewing Company and Bottle Logic Brewing. Happy Independence Day! This week, we’re keeping the blog post short and sweet. There are vegan hamburgers to be grilled and beers to be drank. This week, we’re drinking some pretty hefty beers from Founders, AleSmith, and Bottle Logic. Before we get too deep into it, we’re gonna start with a trip inside the 4B Mailbag with some Founders Backwoods Bastard. Speaking of which, we’re asking for your beer haikus. Feeling creative? Send us yours at feedback@fourbrewers.com. Founders, AleSmith, and Bottle Logic Brewing Next up are three beers that really showcase what’s going on in the SoCal beer scene. AleSmith Brewing Company’s Private Stock Ale and Mexican Speedway Stout are first up. Private Stock Ale is an Old Ale that was made for aging. AleSmith even encourages you to do this. Why? Because, man, IS IT HOT! So much booze on this beer, it’s crazy! But, that’s by design. AleSmith knows what they’re doing and when they tell you to age this beer, you should. Buy a few bottles and open them over the course of five or six years. The booziness should mellow out over time, allowing the beer to really shine. Drink a bottle fresh as a baseline for comparison and then another in a year or two. Hell, buy a case and really geek out with cellaring… AleSmith makes killer stout—probably the best in the world, according to certain folks. Speedway Stout is a classic coffee stout that lends itself well to barrel aging. This version, Mexican Speedway Stout, is a blend of fresh Speedway Stout and tequila barrel-aged Speedway Stout with cinnamon, Mexican coffee and Mexican Chocolate. The balanced of these particular ingredients in beer is critical, and AleSmith nails it—this beer is fantastic. Bottle Logic Brewing – Fundamental Observation We end the show with a beer that needs no introduction, Bottle Logic Brewing’s Fundamental Observation. This beer is the whale-iest of SoCal whales. It’s a fantastic blend of barrel aged stout that literally smells like alcohol infused brownies. While drinking this beer, we talk about beer geeks and beer culture in general and how the scene has changed over that last five years or so. Spoiler: John goes on a rant… BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT. In Episode 13, we have a full house as Derek, Rich, and George are joined again by Matt Dapkins of Massive Beer Reviews and a very special guest - Peculiar Culinary Company chef and owner Gene Philbin! We talk about our upcoming Peculiar Dinner with the Dead on Wednesday, Oct. 21, which pairs a scary menu of unknown items with beers selected specifically to celebrate the Halloween season during a screening of George A. Romero’s classic zombie film that started it all, “Night of the Living Dead.” We also discuss our love/hate relationship with “The Walking Dead” and nothing but animosity for the spin-off, “Fear the Walking Dead,” making movies into video games, cooking with beer, restaurants and breweries, and much more! Those who make it to the end of the episode earn special rewards, especially if you join us on Oct. 21 at Peculiar Culinary Company (30 Center St., Hughestown)! Derek Warren’s popular How to Pair Beer with Everything column on nepascene.com is now a podcast! Joined by NEPA Scene founder and editor Rich Howells and beer enthusiast George Zvirblis, they’ll try a different brew each week and examine it through all the senses, diving into personal experiences and opinions, pop culture, news, or whatever comes to mind. While Derek is an experienced beer reviewer and aficionado (and co-host of the Beer Geeks Radio Hour on WILK 103.1 FM) and George is a beer collector who travels to breweries nationwide, Rich is more of a casual craft beer drinker (and co-host of the NEPA Scene Podcast), so they’ll both offer their own uncensored perspectives and ask guests to share their own. Every episode is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher, and nepascene.com.
Season 2, Episode 10 - This week, we’re geeking out to AleSmith and Mikkeller radness. A couple episodes ago when we did the blind bourbon barrel-aged stout tasting, we got some feedback pertaining to why we didn’t include any of the barrel-aged variants of AleSmith Brewing Company’s Speedway Stout. The reason is that Speedway Stout itself is a coffee stout, and the barrel-aged variants of Speedway have flavorings added to them in addition to coffee. We wanted to keep the stout tasting as pure as possible by excluding any beers with flavoring and/or aroma additives (by the way, we heard you, internet…they’re NOT called “adjuncts”…), hence the reason Speedway Stout was excluded. Mikkeller and AleSmith Beers BUT…since we were accused of erroneously “snubbing” AleSmith, we decided to dedicate an ENTIRE SHOW this awesome beer and brewery. You want the Speedway Stout? Well, now you’re gonna get it. In addition to AleSmith beers, we thought it was appropriate to include another brewery known for making imperial stout whalez, Mikkeller. You may have read in recent news that Mikkeller is partnering up with AleSmith to start brewing beer in the United States. That’s awesome. Mikkeller recently brewed a collaboration beer with AleSmith called Beer Geek Speedway, so we thought the addition of Mikkeller to the show was appropriate. In case you didn’t already know, the brewery, Mikkeller, is what’s known as a “gypsy” brewery, meaning the brewery itself doesn’t have its own brewing facility, rather they use other breweries’ facilities to brew their beers. It’s a great way to get your product in the market if funds to build a brewery aren’t available. We start with Mikkeller’s Beer Geek BreAKfast, which was brewed at Anchorage Brewing Company in Alaska. We had some issues with this beer. Usually, it’s a great brew. But, this batch was really, REALLY over-carbonated, and the extra CO2 really destroyed the overall experience of the beer. Seeing how this was brewed at Anchorage Brewing, who’s known for its stellar beers made with brettanomyces, we presume that maybe some brett made its way into the batch. Again, this is typically a great beer, but this bottle was a disappointment. Next up is what many consider to be one of the best imperial stouts in the world, AleSmith Brewing Company’s Speedway Stout. This beer is a classic from AleSmith. It’s a rich beer with tones of dark fruit and coffee. In fact, it’s made with Ryan Bros. coffee. It’s usually always available and easy to overlook, but it’s definitely worth picking up. AleSmith and Mikkeller Collaboration Beer So what do you do with two awesome imperial stouts if given the opportunity? Blend them together, add some Kopi Luwak coffee, call it Beer Geek Speedway, and blow some minds. That is exactly what AleSmith and Mikkeller did. Both of the beers in this blend were brewed at AleSmith in San Diego. Unbeknownst to the public, owner and brewer at Mikkeller, Mikkel Borg Bjergsø used this opportunity to give the AleSmith’s brew house a test drive. After the beer was released, it was revealed the Mikkel would be taking over the AleSmith facility on Cabot Drive, after AleSmith moves into their new brewery, which is currently under construction. How rad is that? Getting back to the beer…of course, it’s great. The Beer Geek Breakfast part of the blend mellows the dark fruit tones of the Speedway Stout, and makes for a silky smooth mouthfeel. The coffee addition in this is just right. This beer is really the best of two different worlds coming together to create something spectacular. This beer isn’t a gimmicky money grab at all—it’s the real deal. Next, we open up a Beer Geek Brunch Weasel from Mikkeller. This beer is made with vietnamese coffee beans, and was brewed in Norway at Lervig Aktiebryggri. It’s inky-black, and has notes of maple, fig and dark fruits. The final beer of the show is AleSmith’s own [Bourbon] Barrel-Aged Speedway Stout made with Vietnamese Coffee. Holy. Shit. Damn, is this beer good! Silky, creamy, chocolately, coffee…this beer is basically bourbon barrel-aged M&Ms in a bottle. It’s amazing, and a fine example of how awesome AleSmith Brewing Company really is. When tickets for this beer were sold online, they sold out instantly, and with good reason. Beer geeks throughout SoCal creamed their shorts. The gushing about this beer is legit—it is truly amazing. So, there you go, interwebz. BREW THE SHIT OUT OF IT.
