This week, the Start Right Here podcast welcomes a groundbreaking beauty entrepreneur, Miko Branch, CEO of the haircare brand Miss Jessie's, salon owner, and author of Miss Jessie's Creating a Successful Business From Scratch—Naturally. Miko, alongside her late sister, Titi Branch, built a multi-million dollar brand that is sold in outlets like Target and Wal-Mart, has more than 40 SKUs, and was at the forefront of creating products that accentuated the beauty of curly and coily hair.  Miko shares the path she and her sister took to get there. How their father taught them to be fearless and what their first entrepreneurial venture, a cleaning service, taught them about running a business.  But the two took a circuitous route into beauty. Miko first studied fashion at FIT before declaring her desire to become a hairstylist. Titi worked as a field producer at ABC before joining her sister in the industry as her agent. You'll hear how that led from doing hair in their home to a two-chair salon on Bond Street in Brooklyn. And the lesson they learned about expanding too soon. Finally, Miko explains the steps she and her sister took to recover from a bad business decision and the circumstances that led to her embracing her natural curls—which became their unique focus. Miko tells us what they learned from their paternal grandmother, Miss Jessie., and how they factored into creating their first product. Then, she'll explain how the demand for Curly Pudding necessitated getting their products on the retail shelf. You'll learn how they made and shipped their products from home to a manufacturer and owning a warehouse. And why it is crucial to hire the right people. Miko shares how love has fueled the brand's success. And although her sister is no longer on this earthly plane, Titi's impact is still felt in every aspect of Miss Jessie's. Miko's story is as much about love and legacy as it is about success.

When she was younger, Miko Branch had a secret fantasy of opening a pink-decorated salon, although her parents had other career aspirations in mind for her. At age 25, Miko made that dream a reality, and ran her own salon out of the Brooklyn apartment she shared with her sister, Titi. In 1997, with her sister’s encouragement, Miko opened a storefront salon despite her own fears about expanding. Though some of those fears may have been realized when the sisters later lost their first salon business due to what Miko calls some rookie business mistakes, a combination of their resilience, the influence of their strong-willed southern grandmother, Jessie Mae Branch, an aha moment while bathing her young son and a determination to create a hair care products that suited their textures and their lives would change the path of Miss Jessie’s granddaughters forever. On this Throwback Thursday episode of the Support is Sexy podcast, Miko, who Co-Founder and CEO of Miss Jessie’s — one of the natural haircare industry’s leading brands — talks to about rookie mistakes, aha moments, the power of sharing secrets with your customers, the dangers of growing too quickly and how to recover from marketing missteps. Stephanie graduated from VIrginia State University in 2008 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Visual Communication with a head full of locs. While in school, she made products to care for her locs and to keep them healthy. Two years later she would COMB OUT those locs and the real journey began. Nourish and Love Company with birthed in 2010 when Stephanie made whipped body butter and a healing salve for her dog. It was with these two products along with inspiring stories of Lisa Price, Miko Branch, Jane Carter, that she realized that “Hey I can do this too”.    With a deep passion, an insatiable curiosity and a purpose to provide amazing products, Stephanie began a blog where she detailed her journey and her brand with a mission to enrich, empower, and educate. Plus, she opens up about losing her sister Titi in 2014 and how that experience has affected her commitment to her own mental wellness and to spreading that message of mental health awareness to others.     On this episode you'll learn: How to recognize opportunities.Miko's advice for entrepreneurs creating their own beauty products. The advantage of BEING your customer. The power of sharing the how-to information for your products. The moment when you realize you're on to something. What it takes to to be prepared for distribution of your products. The pitfalls of growing too quickly. How "over-skuing" hurts your brand. How to avoid marketing missteps and how to address them when they happen. What Miko and Miss Jessie's are doing to support mental wellness and mental health awareness. The importance of giving ourselves permission to understand our feelings as women. And the sometimes lonely journey of entrepreneurship.     WANT TO RECEIVE A FREE COPY OF MIKO'S BOOK AND A SAMPLE OF MISS JESSIE'S HAIR CARE PRODUCTS? *Today's show is dedicated to Titi Branch — a phenomenal woman, entrepreneur, and sister. We love and thank you for every contribution you made toward helping women embrace their natural beauty.* Miko Branch, the phenomenal cofounder of Miss Jessie's sits down with Mandi and Tiffany to talk about creating the Miss Jessie's hair care line with her big sister Titi in their Brooklyn brownstone over a decade ago.  The sisters mixed their products in the kitchen of their Brooklyn brownstone and bootstrapped the company themselves without any of the usual trappings of entrepreneurship (they didn't have MBAs, or a team of wealthy investors to back them). Word spread about their signature product, their "curly pudding", and soon enough they went from begging NYC-area stores like Ricky's to carry their products to lining up deals with major retailers like Target. But, of course, there were some bumps along the road to success.      After Titi's sudden passing in 2014, Miko has made it her mission to not only continue to grow the company they created as a team but also to focus even more on her own personal happiness, health and balance in life.   "I make happiness and health a priority right up there with business," she says. "I think money is a tool that you can use to do many things but I don't think money has much to do with your character or your decision making."  Check out Miko's book, "Miss Jessie's: Creating a Successful Business from Scratch---Naturally".
