Today, we examine how Jesus healed two men that were paralyzed. We compare the healing found in Mark chapter 2 and the healing found in John chapter 5:1-14. In both cases, the healing began with Jesus forgiving the sins of both men. The purpose of these miracles was to restore what both men lacked. As it turns out Jesus is the conduit to our need. Scripture promises that if we place our focus on God and his ways that he will take care of all our other needs.
Today, we are introduced to the heart's need of every person on the earth. Jesus unpacks God's desire for every human, to be 'Born Again' Today's message is about Nicodemus. A man who had the respect of his peers and the public, but hungered for something more...something that only Jesus could give him.
We are told that Jesus is a, "Friend that sticks closer than a brother." However, first Jesus is Lord. As we examine the second half of John chapter two, we notice that Jesus confronts a situation in the temple. He confronts us where we live, and He does so that we might be holy like He is holy.
Today, we open chapter 2 in the gospel of John and the first miracle in Jesus' public ministry. According to the principle of first mentions, we see how this miracle would define the Lord's work while here on this earth. It so much more than just providing drink for a wedding.

In this episode of Unrefined Podcast, host Brandon Spain and co-host Lindsy Waters welcome guest Frank Viola, a conference speaker, blogger, and bestselling author who helps serious followers of Jesus know their Lord more deeply. The conversation focuses on the supernatural power and energy of God, and Frank explains the difference between the supernatural and the miraculous. Frank then shares his most supernatural experience with God, which involved a time when he was feeling overwhelmed and discouraged and God spoke to him and said, I will never leave you nor forsake you. The hosts engage with Frank asking questions about his career, his books, his blog, his life in walking with the Lord. Frank also shares how his latest book, 48 Laws of Spiritual Power, was a good rebuke to him.frankviola.org- blog48laws.com – 48 Laws of Spiritual Powerfrankviola.info/podcast/ - the Christ is All podcasttheInsurgence.net – the Insurgence podcastClick here to Become a member! After witnessing Jesus performing miraculous signs in Jerusalem at the passover celebration many began to trust Jesus. A religious leader, Nicodemus, a pharisee waits until it is night to meet with Jesus. Nicodemus asks the question, "how to be born again?". Jesus tells him of the Holy Spirit and the birth of spiritual life! Then John's disciples notice more people going to Jesus to be baptized, and John tells his disciples more about who Jesus really is. Episode 2 develops four of six Theological Themes in John: Jesus as Revelation, Miraculous Signs and Witnesses, the Person of Jesus and the Work of Jesus. Slides: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1S0VPiIPLpuQw0WAFeyRCBby7ngG5nG7U
The video for this episode concentrates on a selected set of miraculous signs by Jesus. These are:Changing water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11)Healing the official's son from a distance (John 4:46-54)Healing the paralytic at the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:1-5)Feeding the five thousand (John 6:5-14)Jesus walking on the water (John 6:16-24)Healing the man blind from birth who washed in the Pool of Siloam (John 9:1-7)The raising of Lazarus (John 11:1-45)Each of these miracles seems to be carrying multiple themes. Jesus isn't just changing water to wine—he's also showing that a new way to worship God has arrived, and this new way is better than the old. The healing of the official's son shows the importance of faith, and that Jesus in not limited by normal limitations. The healing of the paralytic shows that Jesus is ruler of the Sabbath, the feeding of the five thousand that Jesus gives true life, and walking on the water that Jesus is the ruler of all nature. The Bible doesn't say where the blind man was when he met Jesus, but more than likely he was a fair distance away from the Pool of Siloam, which is located at the end of the tunnel built by King Hezekiah and is downhill from most of Jerusalem. As he gained his sight, the man would have been able to see the Temple Mount about one-half of a mile uphill to the north. He must have been amazed! In John 9:1-2, Jesus upends the notion that people's sins always make them materially or physically disadvantaged. This would have been a direct threat to a common teaching of the day that disadvantaged people were that way because of sin, while advantaged people were that way because of righteousness. The resurrection of Lazarus shows that Jesus rules over death and can bring life into any situation. The one thing all these miracles have in common is this: they all point to the fact that God is to be glorified in every situation because he is the Master of All.
There will be times when you are called to keep the celebration going; times when you are called to turn water into oceans of wine and crumbs into an abundance of bread; there will be times when you are called to stand alone, to be courageous. Remember that the God incarnate provides extravagant grace that every one of us will be is called to reveal in service to life, abundant life.
Today, as we finish the second chapter of John we discover that though the religious leaders remained defiant, many of the Jewish pilgrims came to a place of belief due to the many miraculous signs that Jesus performed. We also discover the purpose of signs and a warning of seeking miracles instead of the God whose hand performed them.

John's gospel is unlike the earlier gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke in that John uses the phrase 'miraculous signs.' John sets out to make the case that Jesus throughout his public ministry is leaving evidence that proves he is sent from God. In his second miraculous sign demanded by the Temple Priests the foundation is laid to what extent Jesus' authority reaches. John's purpose in his gospel is to lay out the case that Jesus is the Son of God.

Empowered For Mission Week 4 - Miraculous Signs and Wonders
We celebrated the resurrection this Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC, with a message from the gospel of John, Chapter 20. Our senior pastor Craig Bailey described a few signs mentioned within the text which point toward the life Jesus has for us. Like Mary Magdalene, Peter, John, and Thomas in the days following Jesus' death, we often miss the signs or we choose to follow our own paths instead of following Jesus. Our Lord, however, is patient with us, not wanting anyone to perish, but to come to repentance and to life. John's encouragement at the end of the chapter continues to orient us in our belief and begs us to ask the question, "What does our unbelief cost us?"

Our generation is no different than the one that rejected Jesus. They wanted Him to perform a miraculous sign just for them, but the only sign He would give them and us is the sign of Jonah, the symbol of self-sacrifice.
