This discussion centers around the new book The Queerness of Psychoanalysis, which addresses the pathologizing tendencies of psychoanalysis in contrast to its liberatory potential. Contributors, almost all of whom are trans and/or queer, challenge traditional psychoanalytic frameworks, emphasizing flexibility and inclusivity, while exploring the intersection of queer theory and psychoanalysis. Specific chapters highlight experiences of transgender psychoanalysts, the role of drag in queer identity, and the need for psychoanalysis to reflect on its own practices, for example. This conversation also touches on the importance of embodied methods and the evolving nature of psychoanalytic theory. Geoffrey Hervey (they/them) is a community organizer, mental health professional, and professional drag artist. They have a master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Vanderbilt University and are currently pursuing a Psy.D at George Washington University. Their clinical interests center the mental health of marginalized groups of people from a collective liberation framework. As Sin Clair, they have performed in the Southeast U.S. to audiences of thousands and created the Lipsync Legend Tournament to benefit local community mental health organizations. Molly Merson is a Strongman Competitor who likes to lift heavy things. Heavy and odd shaped things. Despite being interested in competing in Strongman and always wanting to give it a go, it took Molly nearly seven years to build up the courage after working hard at the sport of Crossfit with a view to be competitive in the Masters 40s division. Call it serendipity or fortunate timing... but with some encouragement from a coach she trusted Molly's first foray into Strongman competitions lead to a podium finish.    In this episode we talk about role the psychoanalysis has played in Molly's life and the practical lessons you can apply right now from what Molly has learned about herself. Molly's openness about the process and how it's given her more insight into how she's thinking is a fascinating journey into really, deeply paying attention to what you're thinking is truly fascinating.    Molly talks about how she values her negative self-talk and what it can teach you. Molly talks about why it's so powerful to be conscious of your self-talk plus the value of tracking and journaling your thoughts to give you an objective view of what's going on inside your head.   We chat about Molly's long term approach to being an an athlete over 30 and not taking her mobility for granted. Listen as Molly talks about the role a good coach can play in your mental game, the difference between training and competition mentality, Molly's perspective on visualisation and using cues to keep you grounded and Molly's tips on finding a coach.   I'll be honest, there's no way I can do this episode justice in the intro alone and I completely got lost in talking to Molly so... without further adieu, here's Molly Merson.

Dearly Beloved, we are gathered here today to talk about the end. It's the end of the third season of this podcast. A season full of stories about what it's like to be living in these minds and bodies. But it's also the final episode of this show. I want to quickly add, before you have a chance to react, “at least for now!” I want to imply the show could come back to make this ending feel like not a big deal. But let's not do that. Let's just take a moment to let it be. This is the end of the show. Afterall, resurrection fantasies are another defense against loss. As much as I want to just ghost on this ending, I'm not going to. So in this episode, I go back to some of the people who've been on the show before and talk about endings and why acknowledging them is important. And I take this chance to say goodbye to you and to the podcast. Earlier in this season on the Practice of Being Seen, Molly Merson, MFT, and I initiated a discussion around the “American collective unconscious”.  It’s such a complex, layered subject. And though we covered quite a bit of ground in in that hour of conversation, there still is so much more to explore. And so many questions to open up to possibility.   Through this exploration of our collective unprocessed traumas and the deep healing we need, we’re really talking about witnessing in a collective experience in which we are all implicated.  How do we make space for more witnessing?  We also discuss responsibility and resilience, post-traumatic growth, and the Parkland shooting victims and activists.  We ask about the American Dream:  Who is dreaming it and who is it for?  We ask about the possibility of equality:  Can it ever be so?  When the urgency of fighting back and holding others accountable is so palpable and necessary, where is the space for hope, for dancing, for aliveness?   Ultimately, we are asking:  What is true?  What do we know for sure?   Quoted in the Episode:   “Whatever you touch, you change. And whatever you change, changes you.” -Octavia Butler, “Parable Of The Sower”   “We have to call upon our ancestors in some way to do some of this remembering.” Molly Merson    “It's not a reliance on an outside force or some kind of benevolent parent who knows the way. It's like something much more participatory and urgent.” Molly Merson   “We have to get into trouble because the truth is we're in trouble already.” Molly Merson   “I keep thinking about this bigger collective unconsciousness that is our country. We need a witness. We need many witnesses.”  Rebecca Wong   “I don't know about you, but I'm having fantasies and projections that we dismantle this whole thing and rebuild.” Rebecca Wong   Resources Referenced in this Episode: Parable of the Sower: Octavia Butler  Jessica Benjamin  The Catcher in the Rye  Viktor Frankl  Leonard Cohen Molly’s blog post, “The Necessary Precariousness of Hope” Molly’s blog post, “Resilience as ‘Hope with Teeth’ via Pussy Riot and ‘The Chi’”       Where to find Molly: mollymerson.com Twitter  LinkedIn Youtube Facebook   If you're interested in working with Rebecca Wong, you can find out more about her services here: https://www.practiceofbeingseen.com/work-with-rebecca/ Support the #POBScast by joining our WILD WOMAN ONLINE DISCUSSION GROUP, learn more at: http://smpl.ro/wildwomen Join the #POBScast Community practiceofbeingseen.com/community You can find us on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook @POBScast If you have questions or inquiries, email us at practiceofbeingseen@gmail.com

For decades, the field of psychology has been interested in understanding the myriad creative strategies we employ to cope with life's inevitable discomforts. But right now, I wonder if I can convince you that your defense mechanisms might be the key to knowing who you are as an individual and who WE are as a collective. And maybe, just maybe the ways we defend ourselves against the things that scare us are unfairly getting a bad rap. I say, the best defense is the one you know. This conversation undulates between the current state and issues within our collective consciousness as Americans living in today’s social and political climate to the individual in how we deal with self-reflection, trauma, and loss--beautifully illustrating the now proverbial rally cry, “The personal is political.” Rebecca and Berkeley-based therapist Molly Merson, MFT cover it all, from our political “parents” to our collective infancy on the internet, to grief and loss and metabolizing trauma, capitalism and gift-giving culture, community mindset and collaboration, to technology, parenting, psychoanalytic theory, and the choices we have in suicide versus end-of-life.  It all comes down to what we are able to hold and how two minds metabolizing together can disrupt repeat patterns.  Trigger Warning: If you’re thinking about suicide, are worried about a friend or loved one, or would like emotional support, the Lifeline network is available 24/7 across the United States at 1-800-273-8255 Molly also wrote a follow up blog post since we recorded to fill in some blanks, it's well worth a read and available at mollymerson.com/blog/problems-of-suicide-freud.   Resources Referenced in this Episode: Podcast: On Being episode “Growing Up the Internet” Wilfred Bion’s ideas on alpha and beta elements in projective identification Thomas Ogden’s ideas on parent/child relationships and the processing of trauma Podcast: How to Survive the End of the World Co-founders of Black Lives Matter, Alicia Garza (activist, writer, public speaker) and Patrisse Cullors (artist and activist) Howard Thurman’s quote, “Don't ask what the world needs. Most of us know what it means when we say a person went “unconscious” or “lost consciousness”. But deeply imbedded in the roots of psychology's history is the idea of The Unconscious - a psychological phenomena that is inherent to the human psyche and whether we like it or not, influences a tremendous amount of our behavior from who we fall in love with to racial discrimination. As part of the ongoing "Brief Psycho-Education" series, in this episode Lily breaks down what The Unconscious is and makes a case for facing all that we've kept hidden from ourselves and others.
