This week on the show, Emily speaks with the authors of Gender Without Identity.Ann Pellegrini and Avgi Saketopoulou are psychoanalysts who have focused their attention on gender and sexual identity. In their work, they have found the notion of a “core gender identity” or the “born this way” argument too simplistic and even problematic. All genders and sexualities, they argue, whether queer, straight, trans, nonbinary, or cis, are the result of complex psychic and social processes.Their controversial take is that no one's gender or sexuality is innate. Pellegrini and Saketopoulou assert that developmental events, even traumas, play an important role in all this. But to say that trauma may sometimes have a share in becoming trans or becoming queer does not mean trans or queer people are “broken.” Rather, they argue that trauma can function as an engine for transformation and growth. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

In this week's episode, I am delighted to welcome Avgi Sakatopoulou and Ann Pelligrini to the podcast. Avgi and Ann, psychoanalysts and professors at NYU, tackle one of the most hot-button cultural/health issues raging in the United States of America—how one forms their gender identity—in a new book, GENDER WITHOUT IDENTITY.The award-winning psychoanalysts challenge the argument widely embraced by rights activists and members of the LGBTQ+ community that gender identity is innate and immutable. Dismissing the notion of core gender identity as simplistic, problematic, and potentially harmful to LGBTQ+ people, the authors propose instead that gender is something we all acquire—through our ongoing development, family history, and life experiences, which sometimes include trauma. They talk about the genesis of the manuscript, from its beginnings in a painful case of child analysis to its distressing reception by psychoanalytic gatekeepers and “repressive forces within psychoanalysis itself.” They explore the difficulties queer and trans patients have faced in seeking psychoanalytic treatment; the resistances of institutional psychoanalysis when it comes to theorizing queer subjectivities; the struggles of queer and trans analysts themselves; and the implication of psychoanalysis in broader moral panics and political mobilizations against trans people. They discuss how theory is never just abstract, but bears upon urgent questions of care; the power and fantasies of rhetorical appeals to “protect” children; and how to conceive of gender as an experiment rather than an essential given or a predetermined teleology. Dr. Avgi Saketopoulou is an immigrant Cypriot and Greek psychoanalyst, living and working in NYC. She is on faculty at the NYU Postdoctoral Program, where she also trained, and teaches nationally in several psychoanalytic institutes. Her published work has received numerous prizes, including the annual JAPA Essay Prize and the Ralph Roughton Award. She is the 2022 recipient of the Scholarship Award from the division of psychoanalysis of the American Psychological Association (Div. 39) and, with Ann Pellegrini, the recipient of the first Tiresias Essay Prize, from the International Psychoanalytic Associations' committee on sexual and gender diversity. Her interview on relational psychoanalysis is part of the permanent collection of the Freud Museum in Vienna and in 2021 she co-chaired the first US-based conference dedicated to the work of Jean Laplanche. Her book, Sexuality Beyond Consent: Risk, Race, Traumatophilia, came out in February 2023 from the Sexual Cultures series, NYU Press. Gender Without Identity offers an innovative and at times unsettling theory of gender formation. It’s an amazing release, with lots of tremendous bonus features and two commentary tracks. Perhaps one of Criterion’s best releases. Also available on the Criterion Channel. “Beauty and the Beast: Dark Magic” by Geoffrey O’Brien from The Current “On the Making of Beauty and the Beast” by Francis Steegmuller from The Current “Cocteau, Jean” by Richard Misek from Senses of Cinema — Great Director profile from Senses of Cinema Jean Cocteau and His Films of Orphic Identity by Arthur B. Evans — While this book foregoes discussion of La Belle et La Bête to focus on Cocteau’s Orphic Trilogy, it remains an insightful introduction to anyone looking to learn more about Cocteau’s films. Other books on Cocteau can be weighted down with obscurity, but this one’s a very reliable entry point for those looking to learn more. Fantasy Film: A Critical Introduction by James Walters — I haven’t finished this book at the time of posting, but so far it’s a terrific resource of information that’s slightly lacking in insight; perhaps a light recommendation for those interested in the fantasy genre. That being said, Walters discusses society’s ideas of the spiritual and supernatural and how they were influenced by the advent of film in the early 20th century. This portion of the book can easily be connected to our conversation of Jean Cocteau’s poetic filmmaking approach as “seance photography,” and may be worth reading for anyone interested to learn more. “Gender Politics – Cocteau’s Belle is not that Bête: Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bête (1946)” by Susan Hayward from French Film: Texts and Contexts (Ed. Susan Hayward & Ginette Vincendau) — Here’s the link to French Film: Texts and Contexts, which features Susan Hayward’s Lacanian analysis of the film. Given the impressive list of contributors to this book, it’s probably an interesting read and may show up again as a resource for future episodes. The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films by Jack Zipes — Only read the chapter on Beauty and the Beast stories so far, but this book is fantastic. Wonderful insight into the historical lineage of the story in addition to discussion of the film adaptation itself. We’ll likely be using this book as a resource for future episodes. We’ll include some worthwhile passages below: “The issue at hand in [The Beauty and the Best fairy tale] is fidelity and sincerity, or the qualities that make for tenderness, a topic of interest to women at that time, for they were beginning to rebel against the arranged marriages or marriages of convenience… and Mme Le Prince de Beaumont did an excellent job of condensing and altering the tale in 1756 to address a group of young misses, who were supposed to learn how to become ladies and that virtue meant denying themselves. In effect, the code of the tale was to delude them into believing that they would be realizing their goals in life by denying themselves” (227-28) “There is a false power attributed to Beauty as a virtue. By sacrificing oneself, it is demonstrated, the powers that be, here the fairies, will reward her with a perfect husband. The most important thing is to learn to obey and worship one’s father (authority) and to fulfill one’s promises even though they are made under duress. Ugliness is associated with bad manners like those of her sisters. The beast is not ugly because his manners are perfect. Beauty and the Beast are suited for one another because they live according to the code of civility. They subscribe to prescriptions that maintain the power of an elite class and patriarchal rule” (229). Beauty and the Beast: Diary of a Film by Jean Cocteau — Here’s the link to Ronald Duncan’s translation of Cocteau’s renowned on-set diary. Tremendous book, providing Cocteau’s commentary on the famously troubled production. While this Internet Archive version is free, I believe this specific translation may currently be OOP. Jean Cocteau by James S. Williams — This book was our main resource in the discussion of the film. As is the case with most of the books in this French Film Directors series, this serves as both a reliable introduction to Cocteau’s work, biography, and other significant pieces of scholarship on the subject. That said, Williams has a slight tendency toward obscurity and hyperbole in his evaluation of Cocteau’s work. Despite its strengths, this book likely isn’t a one-stop shop resource on Cocteau’s work, and even more so in reference to the question of his collaboration with Nazi and Vichy institutions in occupied France. “Whatever field and medium he was working in, however, Cocteau always considered himself a poet ‘la poesie'…as opposed to simply ‘the poetic' as conventionally understood” (5) “Further, Cocteau insisted on cinema’s ceremonial aspect and the fact that when films are projected we receive phantom images and words emanating as if from beyond the grave” (15) “[Documentary-style filmmakers] were the greatest poets for Cocteau precisely because they were not seeking the poetic. With Cocteau there is always the giddy sense of the marvelous waiting to be revealed, and he had an impish delight in discovering the strange, unheralded forms delivered up by the machine. Rebecca Fraser is a writer, journalist, and broadcaster whose work has been published in Tatler, Vogue, The Times, and The Spectator. President of the Bronte Society for many years, she is the author of a biography of Charlotte Bronte that examines her life in the context of contemporary attitudes about women. Her last book was The Story of Britain, a single-volume history of how England was governed over the past 2000 years. Now, just in time for Thanksgiving, comes her new book, The Mayflower: The Families, the Voyage, and the Founding of America (St. Martin's Press 2017). It tells the story of the Plymouth colony by focusing on the adventures and trials of Edward Winslow, who sailed over on the Mayflower in 1620, and then his son Josiah, who played a crucial role in the growing wars with the American Indians in the late 1670s. Over the course of the hour, we talk about how Edward, a largely ignored protagonist of America's founding story, was foundational to maintaining early relationships with the Indians (including for the exchange of food for the ‘first' Thanksgiving). Between 2004 and 2011, Richard curated six blockbuster history exhibitions at the New-York Historical Society, including Slavery in New York and Revolution! The Atlantic World Reborn. He also drew up the interpretive and curatorial plan for the Slavery and Freedom exhibition at the new National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. Most of this work has come out of his founding and directing the American History Workshop. The journey he has taken—from receiving his PhD in the History of American Civilization at Harvard to becoming a public historian and working on these exhibits—is the subject of his recent book: Curating America: Journeys through Storyscapes of the American Past (University of North Carolina Press, 2016). Over the course of the hour, I talk with Richard about the changing ways people have come to engage with the past and how this has impacted, and been shaped by, his many museum projects and exhibitions. Richard focuses on the materiality of lived experience. From it he culls knowledge of big ideas (such as freedom, revolution, and oppression) and uses places, objects, and the bodily sensorium to create “storyscapes” in which audiences can recognize themselves. Crucial to this process is the knowledge that audiences and museum-goers bring with them. Richard speaks to how he has, together with these stakeholders, generated a new historical awareness that is more reflective of our ever-changing present. His dissertation, The Forgotten Union of the Two Henrys: The True Story of the Peculiar and Rarest Intimacy of the American Civil War, is about the romance between Henry Clay Trumbull and Henry Ward Camp of the Tenth Connecticut Regiment. Janet R. Jakobsen is Director of the Center for Research on Women, Professor of Women’s Studies, and Dean for Faculty Diversity and Development at Barnard College, Columbia University. Her Ph.D. is from Emory University in Religious Studies with a specialization in the Ethics and Society. She is the author of Working Alliances and the Politics of Difference: Diversity and Feminist Ethics (Indiana University Press 1998) and with Ann Pellegrini of Love the Sin: Sexual Regulation and the Limits of Religious Tolerance (New York University Press, 2003). Her most recent anthology, also with Ann Pellegrini, is Secularisms (Duke University Press, 2008), and she co-edited Interventions: Activists and Academics Respond to Violence with Elizabeth Castelli (Palgrave, 2004). Her current book project is Perverse Ethics: Secular Freedom and the Problem of Sex. She has held fellowships at the Udall Center for the Study of Public Policy at the University of Arizona, the Center for the Humanities at Wesleyan University, and the Center for the Study of Values and Public Life at Harvard Divinity School and served as a visiting professor for Wesleyan University’s Ethics Project and Harvard University’s Program in Studies of Women, Gender and Sexuality. Before entering the academy, she was a policy analyst and organizer in Washington, D.C..
