This episode is a special collaboration between Rendering Unconscious and The Fenris Wolf podcast! https://thefenriswolf.substack.com This conversation between Carl Abrahamsson and Vanessa Sinclair reveals a rich dialogue between two collaborators deeply engaged in exploring the intersections of occult culture, psychoanalysis, and contemporary society. Carl discusses his long-running project, The Fenris Wolf, which he has been publishing since 1989 as a journal dedicated to what he terms "occulture" - the fascinating intersection where occult practices meet and influence mainstream culture. Now in its 12th issue with a 13th forthcoming, the project has evolved to include a Substack newsletter that provides more frequent content including book reviews, current affairs, and recorded teachings. On this episode of Rendering Unconscious, I sat down with Karin Valis to talk about AI, psychoanalysis, cut-ups and magic. This is how AI summarizes our conversation (with some minor edits): Karin Valis, a machine learning engineer based in Berlin, discusses the intersection of AI and psychoanalysis, highlighting the dangers of AI therapists exacerbating mental health issues. She notes the rise of AI psychosis on Reddit, where AI's helpful programming can deepen users' delusions. RU345: DR VANESSA SINCLAIR ON SCANSION IN PSYCHOANALYSIS AND ART IN THEORY AND PRAXIS https://renderingunconscious.substack.com/p/ru345-dr-vanessa-sinclair-on-scansion For the latest episode of Rendering Unconscious Podcast, I was interviewed about my book Scansion In Psychoanalysis & Art: The Cut In Creation (Routledge), and my ideas behind the project. You can order your own copy of the book Scansion In Psychoanalysis & Art: The Cut In Creation (Routledge) HERE: https://amzn.to/4jMubrj The book explores the intricate relationships between psychoanalysis and various art movements, particularly focusing on the avant-garde. The text is structured into several parts, each addressing significant themes and historical contexts that shaped both psychoanalysis and modern artistic expressions. Throughout the book, Sinclair employs the concept of scansion—a method of analyzing rhythm and structure—to draw parallels between artistic creation and psychoanalytic processes. She argues that both realms engage in a form of cutting or disruption that reveals underlying truths about human subjectivity. By focusing on fragmentation, the manuscript illustrates how both art and psychoanalysis seek to reconstitute identity and meaning in a world marked by chaos and change. In conclusion, Scansion in Psychoanalysis and Art: the Cut in Creationpresents a comprehensive examination of the dynamic interplay between psychoanalysis and art movements, emphasizing the transformative power of disruption and the continuous quest for understanding the self in relation to the world. Sinclair's work invites readers to reconsider the significance of art as a vehicle for exploring the unconscious and the complexities of human experience. Assim o diz a psicóloga social Isabel Rocha Pinto neste último episódio da Sociedade desta temporada 4 do [IN] Pertinente. Haverá formas de prevenção ou estaremos irremediavelmente ‘condenados' a viver na desinformação, permeáveis à propaganda e à sabotagem?REFERÊNCIAS E LINKS ÚTEISArtigo científicoPennycook, G., & Rand, D. Masud Khan (1924-1989), was an eminent and, ultimately, scandalous British psychoanalyst who trained and practised in London during an important period in the development of psychoanalysis. From August 1967 to March 1980, he wrote his 39 volume Work Books, a diary containing observations and reflections on his own life, the world of psychoanalysis, his evolving theoretical formulations, Western culture, and the turbulent social and political developments of the time. In Diary of a Fallen Psychoanalyst: The Work Books of Masud Khan 1967-1972 (Karnac, 2022), readers will find fascinating entries on Khan's colleague and mentor Donald Winnicott and other well-known analysts of the period, including Anna Freud. Also featuring in these pages are leaders in the world of culture and the arts such as Julie Andrews, the Redgraves and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Dr Linda Hopkins was trained as a scholar in Islamic studies many years ago. She then trained in mental health and became a licensed clinical psychologist and then she underwent Psychoanalytic training. She is the recipient of the prestigious Sigourney Award from the International Psychoanalytic Association. Her book on Masud Khan, the False Self that appeared in 2006 has been widely read and appreciated. She then received the Goethe Award and the famous Gradiva award. Dr Steven Kuchuk is a psychoanalyst based in New York and is an expert on Relational Psychoanalysis. His background is both distinctively academic and clinically rigorous. He has taught extensively across the world and in particular at the doctoral program at New York University. He has written several books and was also the president of the International Association of Relational Psychoanalysis. One of his extremely well known books is titled the Relational Revolution in Psychoanalysis. In this interview Linda and Steven, talk about their collaborative effort in putting together this book, which contains a section of Khan´s workbooks from 1967-1972. We talk about the difficulties in putting this volume together and we also go into Khan´s life and his mind, the climate that he created and the cross-cultural nature of his identity. Masud Khan´s workbooks are set to find a space in an archive at the Freud Museum London. How can neuropsychoanalysis help us to understand Artifical Intelligence? We encounter Artificial Intelligence everyday, which is modeled to a certain extent on human consciousness, and so AI gives us a view into what we know and what we may not know about ourselves. In addition, we now develop our sense of self and others both within the virtual and material worlds – AI could be said therefore to not only be modeled on human consciousness, but it is also impacting our development. In this podcast episode, Dr. Rosa Spagnolo discusses consciousness, artificial intelligence and the development of superintelligent AI. She considers what this implies for human and AI development, identifications, subjectivity, and suffering, leveraging neuropsychoanalytic understandings of the mind. Dr. Rosa Spagnolo is a child neuropsychiatrist, developmental psychotherapist and psychoanalyst member of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society and the IPA. She is co-chair and co-founder of the Italian Psychoanalytic Dialogues Association. Dr. Spagnolo is a member, regional coordinator and chair of the Italian group of the International Neuropsychoanalysis Society. She teaches at several institutions and is a sought-after speaker at national and international conferences. She has written several books and articles on a variety of topics including: Eating disorders, group analytic psychotherapy, neuropsychoanalysis, and neuropsychiatric developmental disorders. She was nominated for the Gradiva award in 2019. ______________ Obrigado aos mecenas do podcast: Francisco Hermenegildo, Ricardo Evangelista, Henrique Pais João Baltazar, Salvador Cunha, Abilio Silva, Tiago Leite, Carlos Martins, Galaró family, Corto Lemos, Miguel Marques, Nuno Costa, Nuno e Ana, João Ribeiro, Helder Miranda, Pedro Lima Ferreira, Cesar Carpinteiro, Luis Fernambuco, Fernando Nunes, Manuel Canelas, Tiago Gonçalves, Carlos Pires, João Domingues, Hélio Bragança da Silva, Sandra Ferreira , Paulo Encarnação , BFDC, António Mexia Santos, Luís Guido, Bruno Heleno Tomás Costa, João Saro, Daniel Correia, Rita Mateus, António Padilha, Tiago Queiroz, Carmen Camacho, João Nelas, Francisco Fonseca, Rafael Santos, Andreia Esteves, Ana Teresa Mota, ARUNE BHURALAL, Mário Lourenço, RB, Maria Pimentel, Luis, Geoffrey Marcelino, Alberto Alcalde, António Rocha Pinto, Ruben de Bragança, João Vieira dos Santos, David Teixeira Alves, Armindo Martins , Carlos Nobre, Bernardo Vidal Pimentel, António Oliveira, Paulo Barros, Nuno Brites, Lígia Violas, Tiago Sequeira, Zé da Radio, João Morais, André Gamito, Diogo Costa, Pedro Ribeiro, Bernardo Cortez Vasco Sá Pinto, David , Tiago Pires, Mafalda Pratas, Joana Margarida Alves Martins, Luis Marques, João Raimundo, Francisco Arantes, Mariana Barosa, Nuno Gonçalves, Pedro Rebelo, Miguel Palhas, Ricardo Duarte, Duarte , Tomás Félix, Vasco Lima, Francisco Vasconcelos, Telmo , José Oliveira Pratas, Jose Pedroso, João Diogo Silva, Joao Diogo, José Proença, João Crispim, João Pinho , Afonso Martins, Robertt Valente, João Barbosa, Renato Mendes, Maria Francisca Couto, Antonio Albuquerque, Ana Sousa Amorim, Francisco Santos, Lara Luís, Manuel Martins, Macaco Quitado, Paulo Ferreira, Diogo Rombo, Francisco Manuel Reis, Bruno Lamas, Daniel Almeida, Patrícia Esquível , Diogo Silva, Luis Gomes, Cesar Correia, Cristiano Tavares, Pedro Gaspar, Gil Batista Marinho, Maria Oliveira, João Pereira, Rui Vilao, João Ferreira, Wedge, José Losa, Hélder Moreira, André Abrantes, Henrique Vieira, João Farinha, Manuel Botelho da Silva, João Diamantino, Ana Rita Laureano, Pedro L, Nuno Malvar, Joel, Rui Antunes7, Tomás Saraiva, Cloé Leal de Magalhães, Joao Barbosa, paulo matos, Fábio Monteiro, Tiago Stock, Beatriz Bagulho, Pedro Bravo, Antonio Loureiro, Hugo Ramos, Inês Inocêncio, Telmo Gomes, Sérgio Nunes, Tiago Pedroso, Teresa Pimentel, Rita Noronha, miguel farracho, José Fangueiro, Zé, Margarida Correia-Neves, Bruno Pinto Vitorino, João Lopes, Joana Pereirinha, Gonçalo Baptista, Dario Rodrigues, tati lima, Pedro On The Road, Catarina Fonseca, JC Pacheco, Sofia Ferreira, Inês Ribeiro, Miguel Jacinto, Tiago Agostinho, Margarida Costa Almeida, Helena Pinheiro, Rui Martins, Fábio Videira Santos, Tomás Lucena, João Freitas, Ricardo Sousa, RJ, Francisco Seabra Guimarães, Carlos Branco, David Palhota, Carlos Castro, Alexandre Alves, Cláudia Gomes Batista, Ana Leal, Ricardo Trindade, Luís Machado, Andrzej Stuart-Thompson, Diego Goulart, Filipa Portela, Paulo Rafael, Paloma Nunes, Marta Mendonca, Teresa Painho, Duarte Cameirão, Rodrigo Silva, José Alberto Gomes, Joao Gama, Cristina Loureiro, Tiago Gama, Tiago Rodrigues, Miguel Duarte, Ana Cantanhede, Artur Castro Freire, Rui Passos Rocha, Pedro Costa Antunes, Sofia Almeida, Ricardo Andrade Guimarães, Daniel Pais, Miguel Bastos, Luís Santos _______________ Esta conversa foi editada por: Hugo Oliveira

In the final part of series 4 of the Freud in Focus podcast, Tom and Jamie discuss the enduring legacy of Freud's paper, ‘Delusion and Dream in Jensen's Gradiva'.
Nancy McWilliams is renowned for her immense contributions to the field of Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis. Her career, which spans six decades, has included roles in teaching, private practice, writing, and speaking. Of the many, Dr. McWilliams' awards and achievements include the Gradiva prize, the Erikson Scholar award, and leadership, scholarship, and international academic excellence awards from Division 39 of the American Psychological Association. Clinicians of every theoretical persuasion appreciate her ability to translate complex theory, implications of research, and even the human dynamics between different subgroups within the profession defined most broadly into simply human and accessible language. In this brief and personal moment we share with Nancy in this episode, she touches on a nuance of listening to understand and be understood that doesn't receive much attention. We seek to understand as clinicians dedicated to healing. We all yearn to be understood in the most personal and authentic way. But what people need and appreciate more than perfect understanding is to experience the effort – the ‘intent' – to be understood. That's what makes the space between us as fellow humans work. That's what makes it count. As Nancy said, reiterating the fruits of much research, the outcome of work in therapy is determined by the fit and the relationship between speaker and listener, therapist and patient. In this episode of The Art of Listening, Nancy will tell us how the power of the therapeutic process hinges on listening with the intent to understand, listening beyond reacting, listening for the meaning, the wisdom there to be received – for speaker and listener, patient and therapist.Chapters1 - The scientific benefits of therapeutic practice (3:59)2 - The difficulty of listening and processing (5:23)3 - How Nancy's mother taught her how to listen (7:52)4 - The difference between knowledge and wisdom (12:23)5 - Where psychotherapy and academia do and don't intersect (16:19)LinksNancy McWilliamsNancy's Books Eileen Dunn's Website

How can individuals possess autonomy if everything is pre-programmed? The dichotomy between fate and free will serves as a captivating centerpiece, keeping readers engrossed in the narrative's philosophical complexity. In his book, Miguel weaves together scientific discoveries, philosophical inquiry, and profound contemplation, inviting readers to embark on a transformative journey that questions the very fabric of existence and the Universe itself. In this interview with Miguel, you'll discover:-The inspiration behind writing Beyond Darwin...02:00-You can't go from certainty to uncertainty...07:15-"Coincidences" that cannot be explained in the realm of Darwinian science...10:30-All scientific norms are being challenged...15:00-Are humans simply divine computer programs?...19:45-Do we have free will when we believe everything is pre-programmed?...25:25-Why the Universe is not entirely random...29:50-And much more...Resources mentioned:Beyond Darwin, The Program HypothesisAbout the guest:Miguel Ribeiro was born in Lisbon, 18 August 1952. "Aren't these daughters of Persia retelling that myth [Shahnameh] as we speak - they put their hair down, Rudabeh put her hair down. This time maybe from this union there will now be a baby girl that will be born. This new epic female hero will transform this land. Something has happened - it's an event, and whether we like it or not there is going to be a before and after. We observe the best of Rudabeh's daughter in every single one of these girls. We know in psychoanalysis that these things are not something that can just happen - that the birth of the subject is a process and this birth of Rudabeh's daughter has been long overdue. It has been a long time in the making, and I am sorry…I get very emotional, but I look forward to her becoming." Episode Description: We begin by acknowledging the political turmoil currently surrounding and impacting our conversation about psychoanalysis in Iran. We discuss the nature of foreignness both as a geographical entity and an intrapsychic experience. Gohar recognizes the essential subversive spirit of discovering one's authentic voice and challenges efforts to homogenize one's identity in an artificial search for sameness. Tolerating discomfort is for her a hallmark of analytic maturation. We discuss the Blues which contain sorrow and promise -"it lives on the edge of falling into melancholy." We learn that Freud was translated into Farsi as early as 1906 and that Gohar was a founder of the Freudian Group of Tehran. We close with hopes for a future inspired by the courage of the young women of today with conversations freed from concerns about safety. Our Guest: Gohar Homayounpour, PsyD is a psychoanalyst and author. She is a member of the International Psychoanalytic Association, the American Psychoanalytic Association, the Italian Psychoanalytical society, and the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis. Come along on a ~~Dream Quest~~ with me to discover works of art that show real dreams...not just images of sleepers or "dream-like" paintings. I set out to discover the bonafides. I began in 1525 with Albrecht Durer, then moved to France with Odilon Rédon in the 1800's, the Surrealists and André Masson in the 1920's, and then shot over and up to the US in the 50's to Jasper Johns, and finally landed back at modern day with the exquisitely-observed representational paintings of Catherine Murphy. This episode was inspired by 2 main sources: 1) The book "Painting the Dream" by Daniel Bergez and also 2) An online artists' talk between 3 painters: Chie Fueki, Alexi Worth and Catherine Murphy called "Painting Table: Catherine Murphy talks with Chie Fueki and Alexi Worth" 1/21/22 hosted by DC Moore Gallery: Watch here: https://vimeo.com/668978992. In the talk, Catherine Murphy reveals that 2 of the paintings in her most recent show ("Flight" & "Begin Again") were made from real dreams that she had had (her discussion of this occurs about 1hr into the talk). Artists and artworks mentioned: "Dream Vision" by Albrecht Durer, "Dream Vision" c 1880 (x 2) by Odilon Rédon, "Gradiva" by André Masson, Jasper Johns "Flag," "Flight" & "Begin Again" by Catherine Murphy Authors/Poets and pieces mentioned: "Painting the Dream" book by Daniel Bergez, "The Gradiva: The Woman Who Walks" novella by Wilhelm Hermann Jensen, "Delusion and Dream in Jensen's Gradiva" essay by Sigmund Freud, "La Révolution Surréaliste" literary journal pub by Paul Eluard, Antonin Artaud, Andre Breton, Michel Leiris & Louis Aragon, "Une Vague de Rêves" poem by Louis Aragon Louis Aragon's Poem "Une Vague de Rêves" (A Wave of Dreams) 1924 Translated from French by Susan de Muth (2003) Excerpt used in the episode: "Dreams, dreams, dreams, with each step the domain of dreams expands. Dreams, dreams, dreams, at last the blue sun of dreams forces the steel-eyed beasts back to their lairs. Dreams, dreams, dreams on the lips of love, on the numbers of happiness, on the teardrops of carefulness, on the signals of hope, on building sites where a whole nation submits to the authority of pickaxes. Dreams, dreams, dreams, nothing but dreams where the wind wanders and barking dogs are out on the roads. Oh magnificent Dream, in the pale morning of buildings, leaning on your elbows on chalk cornices, merging your pure, mobile features with the miraculous immobility of statues, don't ever leave again enticed by dawn's deliberate lies. Who is there? Ah good: let in the infinite." Follow Pep Talks on IG: @peptalksforartists & Donate to the Peps: https://anchor.fm/peptalksforartistspod/support.
