There is a lot of shame talk in the therapist community around wanting to make money while helping people. As a result, many therapists buy into the idea that they are meant to charge low and see many, but this isn't exactly ethical. If you look at this approach a bit closer, it's clear to see that therapists who live by trying to help as many people as possible at a low cost aren't able to give their clients the quality of care that they need to actually benefit from therapy, and many therapists in this position end up burning out and living in desperation. If you have been struggling with how to help others and still put food on the table as well as how to run a private practice that is sustainable and really helps clients heal, this episode is for you.In this episode, I talk with Tiffany McLain, a therapist, a clinical fee strategist for therapists in private practice, and owner of LEAN IN-MAKE BANK, INC.Top 3 reasons to listen to the entire episode:Understand why seeing more clients for less money can be unethical and cause more harm than good.Identify why you might be telling yourself that wealthy therapists are "bad" and that you shouldn't make $250,000 a year seeing 15 clients a week.Learn how you can help more people by seeing fewer clients and charging higher rates, and why that is OK.It's not uncommon for therapists to tell themselves that the profession doesn't exist to make money, but as a private practice owner, you have to wear all the hats, therapist AND CEO, HR, etc. It can feel intimidating at first to accept that making money as a therapist isn't bad and you are allowed to thrive, but once you do, you'll find that you have more opportunities and capacity to help others and yourself.More about Tiffany:Tiffany McLain, LMFT is a clinical fee strategist for therapists in private practice. Her mantra is, “Full fees are the new black.” Via her program, The Lean In. MAKE BANK. 313: The 10 Biggest Mistakes I Made As An Online Course Creator

Selling the Couch with Melvin Varghese, Ph.D.

These past few years, I've been focused on building a life around my family and self-care rather than fitting those things around a career. I've learned that there is much wisdom in slowing down and not keeping up a crazy pace. One thing that has helped me accomplish these goals is creating an online course. Even though I'm super grateful and blown away by the success of the Healthcaster's course, I made a lot of mistakes along the way. Join me as I share my insights and lessons learned.  You'll Learn: The 10 biggest mistakes I made as an online course creator: 1–I didn't understand how my childhood trauma affected my course pricing.  Check out these resources: “https://www.inc.com/magazine/201309/jessica-bruder/psychological-price-of-entrepreneurship.html (The Psychological Price of Entrepreneurship”) (Inc Magazine), We Should All Be Millionaires by Rachel Rodgers, and courses byhttps://www.heytiffany.com ( Tiffany McLain). 2–I gave my students lifetime access to coaching and community. This caused me to feel resentment for not charging more for that kind of access to me. 3–I focused too much on gear instead of creating a steady marketing system.  I have learned that marketing, which is not my strength, is all about authenticity and connection. 4–I focused on being in the “middle of the pack” on pricing instead of in the upper tier. Ask yourself, “Do you want to be the Apple or the Walmart in your niche?” 5–I didn't realize that I could invite students into other experiences beyond my course. Options include a mastermind, cohort-based course, and other recurring income buckets. 6–I realized that looking at my bank account doesn't drive sales as testimonials do. Follow me onhttps://twitter.com/mvarghese5?lang=en ( Twitter) for more information on this topic. 7–I thought I'd be stuck on one business model, so I built a “strip mall model.” I didn't realize that offering several products requires a lot of work, so I'm moving to a “skyscraper model.” Find out more athttp://www.sellingthecouch.com/mastermind ( www.sellingthecouch.com/mastermind). 8–I thought having a mentor with a similar course meant that I couldn't create one. When someone else has a similar course, you can niche down into a more specific message. 9–I was too concerned about the sale over the relationship. This came from a poverty mindset instead of the abundance mindset to which I aspire.  10–I didn't think about the one-off sale on the front end and the recurring invitation on the back.  A certain number of students will want a more in-depth experience with us.  Mentioned in this episode: Ready to create your own course? Be sure to check out: www.codependummy.com @codependummy on IG Sign up for my free course Codependummy 101 at www.codependummy.com  In this podcast episode, Marissa speaks with Tiffany McLain, a fee consultant about codependency, codependency in therapists, and codependency with money! ______________________________________________________________________ Meet Tiffany McLain, LMFT, a private practice fee strategist whose mantra is, “Full fees are the new black.” Via her program, The Lean In. MAKE BANK. Academy, she helps therapists ethically earn 30 to 50% more per month while seeing fewer clients by showing them how to think about and directly address fees in a clinically appropriate manner. www.heytiffany.com@tiffanymclain on IG ______________________________________________________________________ In This Podcast Sometimes codependency can benefit us if we choose the right people to be dependent on Tiffany and Marissa reflect on their experiences with codependency and how their knee-jerk reactions were more about “What does this other person need from me?” as opposed to “What do I need?” Tiffany provides examples, both recent and long-past, where she was taught to “not see what I see and not feel what I feel.” To start off, Marissa shares a funny story with Tiffany about how she was dependent and trying to please Tiffany as an instructor when they first met. Tiffany agrees and talks about how we can be thoughtful about who we surround ourselves with so we can please inspiring people, motivated people, and who we feel good being around.  Tiffany talks about what codependency means for her and how she resonated with a story about defaulting to please another person before she can check in or know to check in with herself. She shares stories about her codependency from her 20s and even more recent at 40! Tiffany mentions being a psychoanalyst--a form of therapy that focuses on the unconscious parts of ourselves that we don't know are there but highly impact our day-to-day decisions.  Tiffany talks about metaphors of her codependency, including being a balloon without anything to tether to or a cork in the ocean just floating with the waves. She discusses the extremes her relationships or experiences would get to because of her difficulty in asserting or maintaining boundaries. She adds the growth and progress she has made in creating boundaries thanks to being a mother and not tolerating the same boundary violations she experienced as a young woman...but still doubts herself, wonders if she is being dramatic, or acting “crazy.” It is evident that the healing and growth from codependency takes time, support, and reflection.  We also delve into how codependency is a form of sef-protection and how we seek safety in pleasing others. When reflecting, it can be obvious that it is self-sabotaging but it is so hard to see and believe if standing up for ourselves was unsafe as children.  Tiffany and Marissa discuss how codependency + money comes up often for helping professionals who often charge lower fees to avoid upsetting or inconveniencing their clients. Tiffany shares how she sees it come up for therapists again and again in their businesses. And then, how her ability to see it in others, led to her recognizing it in herself. She adds how she, as a therapist who uses psychoanalysis, sees codependency as having “aireless worlds,” where one's identity is only experienced through the eyes of others, namely a parent. “It's like being a siamese twin!” Tiffany and Marissa share their experiences working with clients and the healing journey they have ahead of them to resolve codependency. Tiffany shares how we first need to help a client separate from their families/primary caregivers AND THEN how they also need to separate from the therapist.  Tiffany also recognizes how “if you spot it, you got it.” She sees if often in therapists and then reflects on how she may be codependent with the therapists that she works with! She shares about overfunctioning, chasing students in her course, and doing the work for them. Tiffany adds a new motto for all of us codependummies to use that she learned from her coach: “I am responsible to you. I am not responsible for you.” She adds some real-life experiences of worrying it's her fault and taking action out of guilt--and ways she is taking more responsibility for herself so she can give responsibility to others.

The Modern Therapist's Survival Guide with Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy

Overcoming Your Poverty Mindset An interview with Tiffany McLain about how therapists deserve to make a good living and often do not. Curt and Katie interview Tiffany regarding her perspectives related to how sliding scale fees can perpetuate racist and classist systems, the problem with therapists sacrificing themselves and acting as saviors, and the impact you can make if you amass wealth and seek luxury.   It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. In this episode we talk about: Tiffany’s Lean In Make Bank Academy How current events are impacting therapists making money The belief system that we are hurting clients by charging them Why therapists are so susceptible to these messages How women and minorities are external reinforced to sacrifice ourselves The stigma of building wealth, living life more fully, seeking luxury Grappling with raising fees, with people needing help The internal dialogue that comes in when trying to raise fees How luxury has been sustained on the backs of others The misguided attempt to fix the system through self-sacrifice What the cost is when you self-sacrificing The problem with Saviorism How a sliding scale can encourage racism and classism Negating self-efficacy and fostering dependency, through lowering our fees Sliding scale = subsidizing our client’s treatment Tiffany’s experience with a sliding scale therapist How gratitude for a therapist sliding their fee can lead to clients hiding themselves, not fully showing up or engaging in treatment effectively The value issue related to people asking for a sliding fee or balking at paying the full fee How these issues may come in at the beginning of a therapist’s career Talking about your fee as a clinical intervention Unconscious dynamics that keep us from acting on what we know re: setting fees and money Money is a representation of the therapist’s need and desire Processing emotional reactions to fee changes with clients. For example: “When I raise my fees, it hurts you” without collapsing, lowering the fee, or losing boundaries The challenge of looking at financial capacity for individuals The idea that we do not have to take care of individuals who cannot afford our fee in order to create access – and ideas of how we can increase impact once we’ve had the ability to create financial stability and wealth The benefit to society of women gaining wealth, with the ability to make a bigger impact The importance of setting your fee appropriately from the beginning A Message From Therapy Reimagined: Therapy Reimagined 2021 – The Modern Therapist Conference Therapy Reimagined 2021 will be held virtually again this year September 23-25th! Money is a taboo word that can bring up so many uncomfortable feelings. And this discomfort effects our relationships, our livelihoods and our futures. My guest, Jelisha Gatling, is a couples therapist and money mindset coach. She tackled her own maladaptive believes about money and turned her finances and her life around with the help of money mindset guru, Tiffany McLain, Jen Sincero's book, You Are a Badass at Making Money and Linzy Bonham's Money Nuts and Bolts. Now she teaches others to do the same. Jelisha Gatling is a couples therapist who has branched into providing money mindset coaching to therapists helping them work through their money blocks and rewrite the stories that are keeping them on the brink of burnout and broke.  She thrives off of helping therapists to see a reality where they can help others while also thriving financially.  She is working on her first book, “The Closet Wreck Therapist: Saving the Saver”, a humorous recounting of her journey transforming from “broke to woke” while giving a step-by-step guide to abundance for therapists who struggle to practice what they preach. If you'd like to work with Jelisha Gatling contact her at the links below: Website for Therapy Clients: letsunpacktherapy.comWebsite for Therapists: savingthesaver.comThanks so much for your support of A Therapist Takes Her Own Advice. Then there is that shitty version of fear that can paralyze you and keep you on the couch all day binge watching Netflix instead of going to that networking event or taking a risk to start that business you've always dreamed about. What should we do with the fear that holds us back? Is there a way to break free from its power? Yes, there is! One of the best ways to get back in the driver's seat is by leaning into your fears. Get curious! Find out what it is that you are so afraid of. Too often we let fear of the unknown hold us back. When you get real and chase down the root of your fears, you start to reclaim that power! Real talk, there are things in my life that I'm afraid of. I've just committed to a major professional and financial investment and it has me on edge. I don't want fear to dominate and dictate the rest of my life. I'm willing to put in the time to drill down and face my fears because I know that when I do that I begin to break free! Join me, Kaizenites! Let's kick fear where it counts! Getting rid of shame. Shame is an ugly one, my friends. Fear is more of a known quantity but shame is really toxic and harmful. Shame is that negative and self-sabotaging story we continue to tell ourselves deep down in the pit of our souls. You aren't worthy of success. You don't have what it takes to succeed. No one could love you. You drive everyone away. These are just a few of the lies that shame tells us. Life can be so much better, free from the power of shame. It is surprisingly powerful and ridiculously toxic. The lies that shame tells us can feel so TRUE, but they aren't! The truth is, shame is a feeling, not a fact! A great way to start fighting back against the power of shame is to start identifying it when it pops up. Say it out loud or write it down! When you see or say that lie, it puts you in the position of power and helps you begin to break free from the spell it had over you. Kaizenites, we deserve to live shame-free! Hold on to that truth that shame is a feeling, not a fac Seeing envy for what it really is. When I think of envy, I think of Christmas. Seriously! I think back to all those commercials on TV and the ads they would send to my house in the mail filled with the latest toys and gadgets. I couldn't choose just a few items, I wanted every toy and every gadget! As an adult, I feel like I've outgrown that childish impulse of greed and envy… until I see someone who's made it. Then I'm that kid at Christmas all over again. I want to run over and grab their success and take it as my own! Envy has a way of tricking us in a way that feels good and self-righteous. I wouldn't come right out and say that I want to take something that someone has. I would tell myself that I only want what's fair. Sure, they worked hard to get what they have, but so have I! I deserve success, I deserve recognition, if the world were fair, I'd have it. You see where this type of thinking can lead, don't you? It leads to an unhealthy sense of entitlement. The last thing that our society needs are more people who feel like they are entitled to something that they haven't earned! What's the solution? Step away from the comparison trap! Resist the temptation to compare what you've done and where you are in life to the progress that others have made. I get it, friends, I follow some amazing thought leaders and influencers on social media and I get to interact with many successful people in real life but I refuse to compare my story to theirs. Don't let envy steer you in the wrong direction! You are better than that. Put your head down and put in the work, the rest will come, trust me! Money as a conversation piece is as taboo as sex.  It’s as difficult to discuss as racism.  We simply just don’t go there very well.  And, it’s not really our fault.  We generally aren’t taught how to have a healthy relationship with money. We don’t have good (or any) mentorship around it in our careers and we certainly don’t bring money into conversations within the clinical space.  There’s something about money that brings up all the shame and fear.  And yet, it is as necessary to our modern day survival as water and shelter.   So, why is it so hard to go there?  And how are we held back or not showing up as our full selves when we don’t acknowledge money’s role in our lives and confront the fears that come with it?  Can we sit with our narratives and determine whether they’re serving us?  Can we accept others’ feelings toward us when we succeed or fail?     These are all the things we’re leaning into today on Episode 42 on the #POBScast, as I chat with Tiffany McLain of HeyTiffany.com.  In addition to her therapy private practice, she helps other therapists work through their money scripts and fears to reach or exceed their measures of success, while also highlighting that dealing with our inner and outward money stuff is a measure of our own personal growth.   In this episode, we talk about:   Narratives and experiences around using sliding scale fees, and how sliding scales can change the dynamics and power differentials in the therapy room. When we or our clients feel that we have to perform to someone else’s expectation or the ways that we may feel we’ve underperformed as a result of insufficient boundaries or conversations around money. How the conversation of sliding scales and power dynamics invites us to talk about privilege, poverty, insecurity, not-enoughness, and our good feelings around helping. The dichotomy of differentiating between your worth and the value of the work, while also acknowledging that it is your humanity that you also bring into the room with you. The importance of surrounding yourself with people that support your financial growth, rather than reinforce your shame stories. The unique challenges of the upwardly-mobile. Being bold in our work and fee structure, but also boldly open to feedback and the things we need to learn. Money as energy, as well as money affecting energetic demands on us. Giving back without sacrificing our livelihoods as professional helpers. Comparisonitis, and whether or not to be transparent with others about our money goals. The repercussions of our success and tolerating others’ feelings toward us. Financial growth as a measure of our own personal growth, as we deal with the questions and emotions that get stirred up with it.   Find Tiffany McLain online at HeyTiffany.com, and be sure to sign up for her Therapist’s Guide to Raising Fees (Guilt-Free) freebie. When we create more space (financially-based or otherwise) in our businesses, we are able to take better care of ourselves.  If this is something you’re interested in diving deeper into, I invite you to consider joining me for my inaugural Connectfulness Method Mentorship Program.  And, full disclosure:  I’ve decided to eliminate the time-sensitive Early Bird pricing and simply make the Early Bird rate the official package rate.  Because faux urgency feels manipulative to me and this price feels nourishing.

Tiffany McLain is a licensed therapist and the mind behind Hey Tiffany. It’s a site that helps therapists launch their private practices, with a focus on first-time entrepreneurs and first-generation college graduates. Tiffany wants to help people who are trying to do something that their families have not done before; people who want their own income stream, a flexible job, a good lifestyle, and to give back. A lot of people struggle with money, and not just acquiring it. Many people, particular those of us who are called to help others, have a fear around money… and that’s not a healthy relationship. You can’t start any venture, or help people, if you don’t have the right resources. “Fear is the number one obstacle that comes up around money.” Therapists shouldn’t feel guilty about, or afraid of, charging fees. It’s not a zero-sum game where you do better and, as a result, everyone else does worse. In fact, making more money means that you can reach more people, do more good, and have a greater impact. The other part of developing a healthy money mindset is understanding that it’s okay to spend money. You have to invest in yourself and your practice if you want to grow and reach more people. “It’s okay to be afraid. Most of us are afraid! If you can find someone who is doing the thing you want to do and invest in them, you’re going to be just fine.” Tiffany was kind enough to create a special resource just for you in the True Calling Project audience.
