Monte Pittman for “Better or Worse,” is living “Between The Spaces,” of music by releasing two albums at the same time. The longtime Madonna guitarist and former Prong guitar player has ties to the Pop world, but remains very much rooted in Hard Rock and Metal. Steve Michael caught up with Monte when he rolled through town opening up for former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach. Monte was on the tour trail promoting his two, that’s right I said two, album releases which hit the market on the same day in August. With the help of Brian Slagel and Metal Blade records, this ridiculously talented musician released a full blown electric album “Between The Spaces” and a completely acoustic record “Better Or Worse.” We shoot the shit about growing up in towns where music was not plentiful, and how he first met up with pop icon Madonna. We get into the recording of his latest albums, as well as how he feels about the flow of an album and live show. I caught Monte’s set which was a high energy wall of bombastic sound that almost seems impossible for three people to produce. Making an extremely conscious effort to ensure his live set flowed, he ran through tunes from not only his latest two releases but also some songs from his first two releases, “Inverted Grasp Of Balance” and “Power Of Three.” Monte’s music often is like a buzz saw cutting down trees with its ferocity, but it still maintains melody and song structure that is easy to follow and, most importantly for me, lyrics that I can understand. In other words, no “Cookie Monster” vocals here. This week on your favorite metal podcast we talk to virtuoso guitarist Monte Pittman, who has played with plenty of non-metal acts like Madonna and Adam Lambert, but also alongside Tommy Victor in Prong. He ha an extensive solo catalogue as well, including his latest metal installment Inverted Grasp of Balance. In our interview we talk about his whole career, from starting out in East Texas to becoming the King of LA (crowned by us), his ability to work with all walks of life, what it's like to play both stadiums and small clubs, teaching as an outlet for expression (as well as an income stream), and we try to find out more about his personal life. We also talk to DX Ferris, author of the definitive biography on Slayer's Reign in Blood, to commemorate the 30th birthday of the album. On October 7th, 1986, metal changed forever, and DX enlightens us on some of the huge misconceptions about the record, what really spurred the change from longer songs to a shorter, more polished attack, how this album may not be their best-selling, and more (you'll get the rest in a detailed post later this week on MS). DX dispels myths about producer Rick Rubin's influence on Reign in Blood's songs as well as late guitarist Jeff Hanneman's contributions. Mind = blown. Songs: Monte Pittman – "Arisen in Broad Daylight" Slayer – "Necrophobic"

CELEBRITY GUITARIST | SONGWRITER - This week our guest is Monte Pittman. Monte left Texas at 24 and moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career as a professional musician. He made ends meet by working at a local Guitar Center, but, realizing he was better at teaching than selling, he left to start providing guitar lessons. His third student was British filmmaker, Guy Ritchie, who had just received a guitar from his girlfriend, Madonna. Monte was introduced to the iconic performer and became her guitar teacher as well. A month later, Monte was invited to join Madonna on stage at the David Letterman Show to promote her album, Music and has been her guitarist ever since. Recently, he was honored to play with Madonna at the Superbowl. Monte was also Adam Lambert's live guitarist and music director. MONTE PITTMAN WEBSITE: montepittman.com
