We've come for your Souls! That's right, it's been 30 Years since Mortal Monday, when the original Mortal Kombat was ported to several systems, but most importantly, several Sega ones. In this podcast episode, James "The SEGAHolic" and Dan "The Mega" Driver discuss the very first Mortal Kombat game, their memories of the arcade original, the hype that was Mortal Monday and discuss the various ports to Sega systems.
What's up, dudes? I've got some old friends from the DPG here to reminisce all about the blood-soaked mythological arcade game Mortal Kombat on its 30th anniversary! We remember lining up at the arcades, waiting to help the chosen one Liu Kang defeat Shang Tsung and his emperor! Oh yeah, he's gonna turn into a dragon to do it, too! Don't forget the awesomeness that was Mortal Monday! Do heads get ripped off? Yep. Are there buckets of blood? Of course! Does someone shout, "Toasty?" Well, grab your kunai, put on your ninja gear, and take a portal to the Outworld to listen to this episode to find out!

Our Soul Stream episode features returning guest and author, David Craddock! David joins us following the most recent Mortal Monday to discuss the latest in Mortal Kombat news, including Legends: Snow Blind, the 30th MK anniversary, and Round One of his upcoming book Long Live Mortal Kombat! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-realm-kast/support
Long Live Mortal Kombat is a work in progress trilogy of books written by author and die-hard Mortal Kombat fan David L. Craddock. The first book in the series, subtitled “Round 1 - The Fatalities and Fandom of the Arcade Era,” launches on Kickstarter on 29 March and covers the franchise's arcade era spanning Mortal Kombat 1 through 4. Published in celebration of Mortal Kombat's 30th anniversary in 2022, Long Live Mortal Kombat: Round 1 features untold stories and interviews from over 60 developers and subject matter experts, including series co-creator John Tobias and former Midway GM Ken Fedesna. It also delves into the Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat rivalry, scrutinises the controversy surrounding violent video games in the nineties and recounts how the multi-million dollar “Mortal Monday” campaign became the biggest marketing push of its era. The conversation surrounding video games and violence has continued to be a polarizing topic, which makes Dr. Christopher Bartel's book a perfect addition to The Neutral Ground family. Bartel's book (Video Games, Violence, and the Ethics of Fantasy) takes a much-needed nuanced approach to the discussion. Instead of looking at the games, Bartel asks us to look at the players. Rather than saying this game promotes violence, Bartel asks the players to assert more agency in their gaming experiences--to be more aware of what the game potentially does to you and you alone. In this episode, we talk about how games test our ethics, how they blur the lines of social etiquette, and what parents can do to help make sure their children's gaming experiences are as healthy as possible. I also tell a rather personal story of my father taking me to Funcoland (remember those?) on September 13, 1993--also known as Mortal Monday--to purchase Mortal Kombat on the Sega Genesis. This was significant because it was one of the first games to receive a "mature" rating. I had worked all year cleaning up for a mechanic's shop to save up my money. Did my father let me buy it? It's Mortal Kombat time, baby! We should have waited until Monday to post this episode so that we could call it Mortal Monday but we're impatient so let's just go with Fighting Friday, shall we? That sounds like one of those cheap knock-off brands you find in weird, out-of-the-way shops. Like, “Eternal Combat,” with Jimmy Gauge, Sonia Sword, Lou Clang, and Scorpio (it's just a goth kid who dabbles in Wicca). On this episode we're talking about the real deal, though: some of the OG video game movies, Mortal Kombat (1995) and Mortal Kombat Annihilation (1997). They sure are movies! We share our favorite quotes, carefully contemplate what Goro has under his… kilt? Thing? And just generally discuss the good and bad (and very bad) of these two “classics.” It was, as always, a lot of fun. We also talk about E3, Mario Kart 9, Riot Games resignation bonuses, Tabletop Sim's chat failures, and more! Contact us: prettypixelspodcast@gmail.com We're on Twitter: @Losperman (Joey) and @bigbadron (Ron) 00:02:38: E3 will once again be a digital event (via Polygon) 00:08:08: A video game analyst predicts Mario Kart 9 will be teased this year with “a twist” (via GamesIndustry.biz) 00:15:00: Riot Games offers resignation bonuses following gender discrimination lawsuit settlement (via Kotaku) 00:24:07: Tabletop Simulator removes global chat, developers say moderation “has failed” its customers (via Polygon) 00:38:30: Sony's customer service fails Paul, but he has been enjoying Mario Party Superstars and Halo (as have we all) – extended discussion of our time with Halo Infinite multiplayer 01:00:56: Joey's falling deeper in love with 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim and is experiencing some growing pains with Metroid Fusion 01:08:50: Mortal Kombaaaaaaaat! (and Mortal Kombat Annihilation) Theme song by lovers.tiff: loverstiff.bandcamp.com
A SPECIAL LONGER EPISODE OF FTAN. It's all about Mortal Kombat 2! We talk about life in the arcades in 1994, how the home version of MK2 was a god send, talking trash about eBay speculating YouTubers faking e-clout (again), and much much more!
Co-host of the Unfriendly Black Hotties Kamille Washington is here to talk about Mortal Kombat. Along the way, we discuss finding your queer woman root in Outworld, getting your teachers to care about Mortal Monday, and the perfect fusion of art and commerce.Signature Cocktail: the MileenaWho cares if you started as a palette swap? It's Mortal Monday on a Tuesday with the nineties classic Mortal Kombat (1995), followed by Mortal Kombat (2021), starring Kano and some other people. MORTAL KOMBAT! --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
This week as part of a voting poll, the chosen winner was Mortal Kombat (2021) a polarizing film that is based on the epic video game franchise of the same name. However since some people haven't seen this yet, J-Man decides to bounce around the movie talking about its strengths, its weaknesses, and overall what he thinks about it.He will also discuss Warner Bros's weak reliance on trying to make a teaser film instead of a complete one and why all movies really don't need to do a trilogy route. The launch of the Playstation! Too many launch titles! We had so many games this week we had to distribute the load between the two of us. So instead of both of us playing them, we each played half and took turns explaining them. How much do you trust Jake to explain a video game to you? Hold on to your butts. Oh! also you might notice Jake is a little quiet at first. His volume was a bit low and we noticed like an hour or so in and fixed it. Whoopsies.
