From a bedroom coder to Game Developer's Conference OG to the creator of one of the greatest one-on-one action strategy games of the 8 bit era, Jeff Johannigman worked for some of the most legendary companies of the 80s, Epyx, Electronic Arts, and Origin and beyond. In Part 2, we talk about working on Ultima for the Gameboy, porting Dynamix titles to the Amiga, rediscovering his strategy roots at Microprose and finally deciding to exit the industry on moral and personal grounds. Jeff's insight and storytelling skill make this a wonderful chat. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on 1999's Outcast, from Appeal and Infogrames. We first talk about this past weekend's charity event, before setting the game in its time and discussing its early presentation. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Through tutorial Issues covered: Defeating Games for Charity, variety of streamers, offerings to the foundation, the speedrun seed, commenting on our own game, more memories of Jedi Starfighter, how a developer sees a game vs a player, a big doodyhead, the crossover of European games, setting the game in its time, not fitting in with others of its time, a weird company in gaming history, not being sure what's in the game, a parody of 1980s action heroes, pop culture origins, proper noun soup and a lexicon, waking up in another place, doling out too much worldbuilding at once, othering non-Western cultures, building on golden era science fiction, exploring the starting area, lots of verbs, discovering by exploring, technically first person, lack of quest markers, manipulating voxel density, using voxels differently, using voxels as rendering and simulation vs rendering only, ray-tracing, advances in hardware and looking back on old research, constructive solid geometry and tessellation, finding limitations, popularity in other regions, big in Japan.

Igancio is a video game developer based in Uruguay that loves the style of 90s RTS games. So much so that he's started making his own. Dying Breed is a single player RTS game inspired by classics like Red alert and will be published by the iconic Microprose. The publisher of games like Sid Meier's Civilization, Worms Armageddon, and Rollercoaster Tycoon, just to name a few. To me, his story of how he started making the game and his struggle to find a publisher is just as interesting as the game he's trying to create. If I had an infinite budget, I'd hire a crew to follow him around for a year and make a documentary on what it's like making an indie game in Uruguay in 2024. But I don't, so this podcast will do. We talked about why he loves this genre so much, what does a modern day indie developer look like, is he using AI, how hard was it to find a publisher and lots more!

TCW Podcast Episode 193 - Microprose Part 2 In part two of our look at Microprose we focus on the growth of the company with popular games like Gunship, and Sid Meier's Pirates. Wild Bill continued his aggressive push to expand the company moving into the UK market and even the coin-op space. This unfortunately led Sid to step back from the company and become a contractor. Wild Bill took the company public to help cover the costs of missteps but eventually became embroiled in his own troubles with pressure from the board. It was during a time when he was forced to step back from the company, and the release of problematic adventure and role-playing games led the company to be acquired by Spectrum Holobyte. TCW Podcast Episode 192 -Microprose Part 1 In the first part of our look at Microprose, we cover the central characters of Wild Bill Stealey and Sid Meier. The duo came from very different backgrounds that helped inform the creative and business powerhouse. Wild Bill had to grow up at a young age after his father's death. This led to him having to manage the home finances, negotiate out of debt, and learn many of the skills that would help him in his military, and business careers. We have covered some of Sid's history in episode 50, but we have a lot of new information with additional research and Sid's autobiography. We cover Microprose's founding with a bet between the two at a convention in Los Vegas, and Wild Bill pushing to have his dream of playing a video game able to realistically represent what it was like to fly a jet fighter. Featuring: Ammosart, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen Hey Folks! This week we are down an Ash but have the triumphant return of Kodra from Origins. This week we talk about the self-DDoS of Twitter and Kodra chimes in on the return of P-Speed to a new Super Mario Game. From there we talk a bit about the newly announced Guild Wars 2 expansion Secrets of the Obscure. Kodra gives us a bit of a run down on his experiences at Origins and how he has finally played in the most ubiquitous LARP Vampire the Masquerade. We are somewhat incredulous as for several of us… that is the ONLY LARP we have ever participated in. Grace gets bit by the Honkai Star Rail bug finally and talks a bit about their experiences. Nimona is out and we talk a bit about the steps it took to get to this point as well as a bit about the mixed bag that is The Little Mermaid live-action film. Finally, we wrap things up with a quick topic about Microprose actually still existing in some form and gobbling up former properties like getting back the license to Falcon. Topics Discussed: The Twitpocalypse P-Speed Returns Guild Wars 2 Secrets of the Obscure Origins Convention Vampire LARP Honkai Star Rail Nimona Is Out The Little Mermaid Live Action Microprose exists and gets Falcon back
New series! We are starting X-COM: UFO Defense which is a novelization of the original MicroProse game created by the Nick and Julian Gollop. Jason from Mr Lurch's Things joins us once again for this longer than usual chat about retro gaming, old tech and more. Microprose has reacquired the Falcon series of flight sims. Classic game Mercenary has been given a modern makeover which doesn't spoil its wireframe looks. Finally, we think back to those tabletop games as found in the Argos catalogue of old. Could LCD gaming hope to come close arcade classics? All this and our Community Question Of the Week. Please visit https://mrlurch.com/ to see everything Jason has to entertain you. We are sponsored by Pixel Addict magazine. They are getting ready to publish a new issue and our guest this week has read it and has some thoughts. This starts out the series on Computer Strategy Games, and we begin with the game that got me hooked, the first Civilization game created by Sid Meier and published by Microprose. Though it is pretty old now, it is still fond in my heart, and in the hearts of so many other gamers. If this comes across as a love letter, so be it. We will also in this series look at where you can obtain old games, and where you can find more information about the games I cover. In which we play Sid Meier's Colonization, a simulator of the European colonization of the “New World” starting in 1492. Warning: This game uncritically includes the genocide of Indigenous people, and uncritically does not include slavery. Pippin does his best not to get involved but pays the price of inaction. David flies under the King's radar and lives on the kindness of others. These, and other GAMETHINGS. Sid Meier's Colonization was developed and published by MicroProse in 1994. – Visit us: https://gamething.life Email us: contact@gamething.life Support us: https://patreon.com/othergamethings/
