We're back with a different sort of episode! Isaac and special guest Dalton delve deep into the late great, Cormac McCarthy and his magnum opus; Blood Meridian. We are not literary critics or published authors, just two friends having an honest conversation about a book that we both love. BM is a difficult book to get through at times but we do our best in seeing through the violence and inhospitable landscapes and look for the meaning behind it all. Pulling from Samuel Chamberlains, My Confession, we also look briefly into the history behind the villain of all villains, Judge Holden, and the leader of the gang, John Joel Glanton. We would love to hear your thoughts on Blood Meridian at lostpagespod@gmail.com.
The Adderall-fueled writer's room of the American left has decided, quite insanely, to make a propaganda initiative out of the notion of “banned books.” They know that Americans balk at the idea of burning and banning books, so Gavin Newsom et al are pretending that elementary schools eschewing 2SLGBTQIA+ manuals on how to give queer b******s are “banning books.” Very typical Alinksy-style opportunism. Of course, it is in fact the hegemonic left increasingly banning books they don't like… while fake handwringing over banned books. Here are just a few books that have been effectively banned via various underhanded methods, including acquiring copyrights only to destroy them. * Camp of the Saints* The Turner Diaries* Background to Betrayal* High School Race War by Harold SaltzmanMeet anon Alaric the Barbarian, founder of Dissident Review, publisher of genuinely dissident thought in many forms. One his projects is buying “banned” books and republishing them, making them readily available for sale. He recently republished My Confession, by Samuel Chamberlain, a brutal and honest first-person non-fiction account of a cowboy killing people and scalping Indians for pay during and after the Mexican War of 1846-48. My Confession is the basis for Blood Meridian, but it's original version had been largely lost to the public. A watered-down milquetoast edition was published in its place. But Alaric crowdsourced the costly purchase of an original edition, including Chamberlain's drawings, and republished it. It is now available on Amazon. Tolstoy's autobiographical memoir always bugged me. Here's why!
My Confession by Leo Tolstoy audiobook. "My Confession" is a brief autobiographical story of Leo Tolstoy's struggle with a mid-life existential crisis of melancholia. It describes his search for answers to the profound questions "What will come of my life?" and "What is the meaning of life?", without answers to which life, for him, had become "impossible." Tolstoy reflects on the arc of his philosophical life until then: his childhood abandonment of his Russian orthodox faith; his mastery of strength, will, power, and reason; and how, after he had achieved tremendous financial success and social status, life to him seemed meaningless. After despairing of his attempts to find answers in science, philosophy, eastern wisdom, and his fellow men of letters, he describes his turn to the wisdom of the common people and his attempts to reconcile their instinctive faith with the dictates of his reason. The main body of the text ends with the author reaching a compromise: faith, he realizes, is a necessity, but it must be constrained by reason. However, an epilogue that describes a dream he had some time after completing the body of the text suggests that he has undergone a radical personal and spiritual transformation.
This is an unplanned episode. My efforts to be organized and plan somewhat ahead got thrown off course a little as I felt blindsided by some friendly feedback. So, I deviated from the plan (heaven forbid) and this, My Confession, is now episode 6. It's my reaction, my feelings, my introspection about how something many may consider morbid is my motivator; and a whole lot more. I hope you'll join me.

A Confession, or My Confession, is a short work on the subject of melancholia, philosophy and religion by the acclaimed Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy. It was written in 1879 to 1880, when Tolstoy was in his early fifties and going through a kind of mid-life crisis. I read out the last couple of pages in this podcast.

Laura Jane has performed and recorded with some of the biggest names in the business, such as Latin Superstar Enrique Iglesias, Dave Matthews Band, Kelly Clarkson, Anastacia, the late Teena Marie, Smash star Katharine McPhee, Kid Rock, Joe Walsh, Aaron Neville, and Florence and the Machine. Laura Jane’s debut album TO MY PLANET BOO was released in 2005. Her first single off the album SUMMERTIME IN THE CITY was a drum n bass track, which pulsated and was woven with what now would be called her signature sweet vocal texture. This song got international airplay and great reviews. Laura Jane most recently released her second solo album, called EVERYTHING CHANGES.It features upright bass, acoustic piano, percussion and acoustic guitar. The sound is a cross between Roberta Flack and Karen Carpenter or for a newer reference Norah Jones and Corrine Bailey Rae. Laura Jane enlisted Jamiseson Trotter as the producer for the album to help achieve the sound and their two heads together created beautiful tracks like Everything Changes, a thoughtful and carefully produced song that is melancholy and yet hopeful. She once again features Brazilian percussion on the song THE ANSWER – which is more of a mantra than a song – and definitely has that signature Laura Jane vocal texture on it, with vocal arrangements by Jason Paige. Other stand out tracks are My Confession which is funky and soulful about a woman being scorned by a man but yet rising up to overcome it. And the beautiful duet called the VOW – featuring Jason Paige could surely be a classic love song. http://www.laurajanemusic.net/
