Since the early 2000s, Festival Director and musical curator Cem Zafir has been presenting diverse, exploratory, and engaging concerts via his non-profit organization, Zula Presents. After moving to Hamilton, Ontario in 2012, Cem seized on the opportunity to create an early summer music festival. The Something Else! Festival began in 2014. Now in its 12th year, it brings to Hamilton some of the finest talents in creative, global, and improvised music. In this fun and compact catch up with Jane, Cem previews some of the highlights of the upcoming festival. From solo piano with Guggenheim Fellow and Alpert Award-winning pianist/educator Myra Melford, to the deep electronic vibes of Farida Amadou; from the "weird beauty" of The Cluttertones, to a nature walk with Pulitzer Prize recipient, percussionist and composer Susie Ibarra, the lineup is guaranteed to blow your mind, and open your ears. Tickets and passes are on sale now via Eventbrite or E-transfer (no fee) to tix@zulapresents.orgMusic in this episode:"Water Thief" - Izumi Kimura and Gerry Hemingway (Kairos, 2023)"The End Of" - Farida Amadou (When It Rains It Pours, 2024)"Moveable Do (La-La Bémol) Feat. The morning before I recorded this, I woke up early, got lost in the fog, and ended up writing a new Charlatan song around daybreak - and it was so, so nice. Go over to the Patreon to give it a listen! But, TWO - count' em TWO - albums of the week since the podcast will be off next week (holiday vibes), and it's my show so I can do whatever I want. Both are gems, and I listened to them back-to-back yesterday (Melford then Kowalsky) and it REALLY worked.

Ron Miles was a jazz hypnotist who would lure his listeners into his music world, taking them to another dimension and gently dropping them back on earth at the end of his concerts, or albums, leaving them wondering… ‘what did just happen…? And how did I get here'?  A few days back he passed away at 58, something that for most came as completely unexpected and very hard to make sense of. So this week we do the only thing that may help process this event, take a look back at decades of music that he wrote and played, either as leader or sideman but always as a custodian of beauty. The playlist also features Jason Moran, Bill Frisell, Brian Blade, Joshua Redman, Jenny Scheinman, Ben Goldberg, and Myra Melford. The third episode of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with pianist Myra Melford. Melford has been a prominent figure on the jazz avant-garde since the late 1980s, having worked with numerous figures affiliated with the AACM, including Henry Threadgill, Roscoe Mitchell, Joseph Jarman, Nicole Mitchell, and Leroy Jenkins. She’s also led several of her own groups, including Trio M with bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Matt Wilson; the Myra Melford Trio with bassist Lindsey Horner and drummer Reggie Nicholson, which later became the Myra Melford Expanded Ensemble with the addition of trumpeter Dave Douglas and saxophonist Marty Ehrlich; Be Bread, which explored a blend of jazz and traditional Indian music, which Melford has studied extensively; and Snowy Egret, which includes guitarist Liberty Ellman, cornet player Ron Miles, bassist Stomu Takeishi, and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, and with whom she just recorded a new album, due out in 2018. She’s got many other projects going as well, many of which are explored in this interview. Melford also discusses her early studies and her path to becoming a professional musician; her exploration of Indian music; her role as a professor at UC Berkeley; her participation in the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's “Handful of Keys” salute to jazz piano history; and much more. It’s a fascinating, nearly hour-long conversation I hope you’ll enjoy.

A continuación escuchamos al Joëlle Léandre / Zlatko Kau?i? Trumpeter, Composer and Educator, Cuong Vu joins the conversation for Episode #007.  Originally born in Vietnam and having grown up largely in Seattle, WA, Cuong went on to attend the New England Conservatory of Music, and experienced more than a decade on the New York City jazz and avant garde scene. Now a Professor of Jazz Studies back in his home town of Seattle at the University of Washington, he remains a critically acclaimed musician for his innovative approach to the Trumpet, Timbre, and Improvisation in performance and on recordings. His longtime collaborators, Bassist, Stomu Takeishi, and, Drummer, Ted Poor, feature prominently in Cuong Vu's works as a trio and quartet.  With the expanded palate of musicians such as Bill Frisell, Myra Melford, or Chris Speed, and opportunities to work with boundary pushers such as Laurie Anderson and David Bowie, Cuong has added his signature approach on numerous recordings. His latest reunites him with, Guitarist, Pat Metheny, having recorded on and performed in support of The Pat Metheny Group's grammy award winning albums, Speaking of Now, and, The Way Up.  The Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny is an energetic outing that places the voice of the trio on equal footing with Metheny's meticulous improvisation. Under a flight path of the SEA/TAC airport, we discuss the new record, Wynton, Charles Ives, Music Industry Secrets, A Cautionary Tale about Smoking Pot, and the Seattle Improvised Music Scene. cuongvu.com
