Myra Melford is an American avant-garde pianist, composer, educator, and improvisor. Her music is unique, exciting, and brave, evolving from an approach to the piano that is percussive, athletic, and uber-dynamic, and compositions that are exploratory, poetic, visual, and thought-provoking. Melford is an interdisciplinary artist of the highest order. Awarded the Alpert Award in the Arts for Music in 2012, plus the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in 2013, she has released over 30 albums in various configurations (solo, duo, trio, quartet, quintet), and has collaborated with some of the greatest talents in contemporary music. Her most recent release is entitled Splash (with bassist Michael Formanek and drummer/vibraphonist Ches Smith), and is inspired by the work of the post-abstract expressionist painter Cy Twombly. This interview was recorded in June, 2025 in Hamilton, ON, during the Something Else Festival. Lauren Newton has gained recognition in both the jazz and avant-garde music scenes through her vocal practice expanding her range of voice techniques without using words, focusing primarily on vocal expression. En este video os ofrecemos un fragmento del concierto "Ellas son Jazz" Desde la brasileña Flora Purim hasta la estadounidense Myra Melford pasando por la clarinetista israelí Anat Cohen, la lista de mujeres que han realizado grandes aportaciones al mundo del jazz se extiende por diferentes países y con distintos estilos. Una riqueza musical que puede verse en un buen conjunto de composiciones, muchas de las cuales se escucharon en este concierto. Román Filiú y Marta Sánchez, ambos con una amplia trayectoria en el mundo de la interpretación y composición jazzística, nos transportan a un viaje musical con el que poner en valor el papel de mujeres de raíces judías en el mundo de la música.

Ron Miles was a jazz hypnotist who would lure his listeners into his music world, taking them to another dimension and gently dropping them back on earth at the end of his concerts, or albums, leaving them wondering… ‘what did just happen…? And how did I get here'?  A few days back he passed away at 58, something that for most came as completely unexpected and very hard to make sense of. So this week we do the only thing that may help process this event, take a look back at decades of music that he wrote and played, either as leader or sideman but always as a custodian of beauty.
