Emanuele Orsini — the head of Italy's largest business lobby — called for Meloni to cut energy costs and pave the way for a return to nuclear energy at the annual assembly for Confindustria, where Meloni again acknowledged her country's energy problems, Reuters reported. “Our companies continue to suffer from an energy (price) surcharge of more than 35% over the European average, even reaching peaks of 80% when compared to the largest European countries,” Orsini said at the assembly, according to Reuters. Today's episode is different from all the previous ones, as for the first time on Scaling Theory, we focus on research methodology, exploring how AI is reshaping the very process of doing research and what that shift means for science and society at large.I sat down with James Evans, Professor of Sociology, Computational and Data Science at the University of Chicago, External Professor at the Santa Fe Institute, and Faculty Member at the Complexity Science Hub in Vienna, to explore how AI is transforming the way we simulate, scale, and understand human behavior, and what that shift means for science and society. We dive into his pioneering work on using large language models to simulate individuals, societies, and entire social systems. James and I explore the strengths and limits of AI agents for both the social and hard sciences before reflecting on the future of social science itself. We talk about research centers entirely run by AI and conferences conducted by AI agents, without any human involvement. We also discuss the role of small research teams in disruptive innovation, and how to cultivate proximity and serendipity in a research world where we increasingly cooperate with machines. You can follow me on X (@ProfSchrepel) and BlueSky (@ProfSchrepel) to receive regular updates.References:- Simulating Subjects: The Promise and Peril of AI Stand-ins for Social Agents and Interactions (2025) https://osf.io/preprints/socarxiv/vp3j2_v3- LLM Social Simulations Are a Promising Research Method (2025) https://arxiv.org/pdf/2504.02234- Large teams develop and small teams disrupt science and technology (2019) https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-019-0941-9?wpisrc=- AI Expands Scientists' Impact but Contracts Science's Focus (2024) https://arxiv.org/abs/2412.07727- The Paradox of Collective Certainty in Science (2024) https://arxiv.org/html/2406.05809v1?utm_source=chatgpt.com- Being Together in Place as a Catalyst for Scientific Advance (Research Policy, 2023) https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0048733323001956

Back in 2011, I took my first business class in college. I had heard about this professor who had a really innovative way of teaching inside of the business school at ColumbiaAfter taking that class, I ended up having quite a few classes with him and he ended up becoming my Advisor for a little while. It was in 2012 during my junior where I took my first entrepreneurial class with him, created my first business plan and learned that Monopoly actually could be tied back to business (my family strongly dislikes playing with me now). Some of my favorite classes ever were taught by today's guest and I consider him my first mentor in the business world. The fact that we are sitting together now on my podcast over a decade later, it feels very surreal and I'm grateful. My guest today is Dr. Sean Siebert. Dr. Siebert's Bio:Dr. Sean Siebert's breadth of knowledge and experience, combined with his story-telling ability, make him a much-sought-after speaker, panelist, educator, and consultant. His messages resonate with audiences, leaving them both motivated and committed to embrace a future of endless possibilities. Currently, Siebert has authored the award-winning books, Fighting The Good Fight and Conversations on Grief.Additionally, Siebert serves as a contracted subject-matter-expert (SME) for the Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR). His work in the industries of education; workforce development; entrepreneurship; and economic development continues to be recognized across the United States and around the world. Dr. Siebert has been honored by the Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA) with the prestigious Friend of Education Award for his work with school districts across the State of Missouri. Dr. Siebert was the national recipient of the National Association of Development Organizations Innovation Award, for his work that helps communities, and individuals, to combat the mental health and opioid epidemics. Siebert has also been honored as the Entrepreneur of the Year, Citizen of the Year, Faculty Member of the Year, and he was the recipient of the Exclamation Award for Excellence. Siebert has been recognized on numerous occasions by the Missouri Department of Economic Development as he was a featured keynote speaker at the Governor's Conference on Economic Development in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2023. According to our guest on this week's episode of the Faculty Factory Podcast, John Heymann, MD, every academic medicine professional can bet big on two things: compassion and understanding. Dr. Heymann is a neuroradiologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, where he serves as an Associate Professor in Radiology, as well as the Director of Residency Programs and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations. “Being angry all the time is not conducive to longevity, and I think a lot of that comes from misunderstanding other people and their mind states. Therefore, it's important to be mindful and practice compassion,” Dr. Heymann said. It truly might be time to double down on compassion. Understanding is at the core of compassion, as we learn in this discussion, and both elements are necessary for compassion to manifest. The bottom line is that how we interact with one another and recognize each other's challenges is an essential part of our mental health and well-being. Join me and Dr. John Lewis, Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition, as we dive deep into the fascinating world of polysaccharides. We're breaking down the myths about sugars and exploring how plant-based diets truly impact your health.  We'll also compare plant and animal proteins, clear up some common misconceptions about nutrients, and talk about what really matters when it comes to staying healthy—like nutrition, exercise, and sleep. This episode is packed with practical insights to help you make better choices for long-term health, so don't miss it! Key Takeaways: Polysaccharides like those found in aloe vera and rice bran are potent health-promoting substances, distinct from simple sugars notorious for spiking insulin and metabolic issues. Dr. John Lewis's groundbreaking research supports the use of a polysaccharide-based dietary supplement to improve cognitive and immune function in individuals with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. A plant-based diet offers crucial nutrients, casting doubt on the perceived necessity of animal proteins for sufficient nutrition. The mechanisms of aloe vera—notably its acute polysaccharide content—underpin its centuries-old reputation for soothing burns and other wounds. Dr. Lewis advocates for a holistic approach to health, encompassing plant-based diets, strategic supplementation, regular exercise, and adequate sleep.   More of  Dr. John Lewis: Dr. John E. Lewis has spent most of his career developing a unique approach as someone who “walks the walk” through all of his combined professional and personal experiences to attaining optimal health through nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise. Throughout his research career, he has evaluated many different nutritional approaches to enhancing well-being, particularly for brain health, immune function, and counteracting aging. He can separate fact from fiction regarding how to utilize nutrition and dietary supplements to help you achieve and maintain optimal health. If you need a trusted source of information, products, and services, then look no further than Dr. Lewis and how he can help you achieve your health-related goals. Professional Career Dr. Lewis is past full-time Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and the Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition™. He is a Diplomate, Faculty Member, and Advisor of the Medical Wellness Association. He has been the principal investigator of over 30 different studies on human health in his research career. During that time, he either directly raised or indirectly supported raising over $23 million in grants, gifts, and contracts for research studies and clinical trials and educational programs for medical students. In addition to his research, Dr. Lewis has been an invited national and international lecturer and guest speaker at conferences and as a guest on television shows. He is a well-known author with over 180 peer-reviewed publications in some of the world's leading scientific journals. He has also mentored many different students, from undergraduates to post-doctoral trainees, in not only how to conduct clinical research but to apply the principles of health promotion into daily practice. Research Interests Much of Dr. Lewis's research has focused on evaluating the effects of nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise on various aspects of human health. He and his colleagues have been continually searching for ways to help people achieve and maintain health through natural treatments that align with our physiology. A primary stimulus for the origin of Dr Lewis Nutrition™ occurred after Dr. Lewis ran his landmark study on how an aloe polysaccharide multi-nutrient complex improved cognitive and immune functioning after 12 months in persons with moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease, leading to the creation of the dietary supplement, Daily Brain Care. Daily Brain Care showed clinically and statistically significant improvements in cognition according to the ADAS-cog cognition score and statistically significant improvements in inflammation (according to TNFα and VEGF), immune function (according to the CD4/CD8 ratio), and adult stem cells (according to CD14+ cells). His seminal publication from the study in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease not only spurred him to leave academics and pursue a science-based business career, but also enabled him to be selected for a widely-acclaimed TEDxMiami talk. Lewis, Ph.D. is the Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition™. Dr. John E. Lewis has spent most of his career developing a unique approach as someone who "walks the walk" through all of his combined professional and personal experiences to attaining optimal health through nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise. Founding Dr Lewis Nutrition™ While Dr. Lewis still maintains an academic affiliation, he chose to leave a full-time research career to pursue his true passion of helping people achieve health through nutrition, dietary supplements, and exercise. His research in brain health and immune function was key in the creation of Daily Brain Care, but afterward he chose to shift into business where the opportunity to reach a larger audience is greater. Dr Lewis Nutrition™ is the vehicle through which Dr. Lewis leverages his many years of personal and professional work to spread a message of health that is so desperately needed, particularly for those who are afflicted with an all-too-common chronic disease, e.g., neurodegeneration, immune dysfunction, or cardiac and metabolic disorder. Dr. Lewis will continue to be a thought leader to help people utilize the power of nutrition and dietary supplements and learn how to take control of and optimize their health.         Personalised Health Optimisation Consulting with Lisa Tamati Lisa offers solution focused coaching sessions to help you find the right answers to your challenges. It not only completely changed my career, it completely changed my life in the sense that it took me to a different level of having an appreciation and perspective on what mother nature provides to us, and then being able to utilize those particular nutrients or phytonutrients for health.” - Dr. John Lewis[17:44] “The body is intelligent enough to take a bunch of fructose or a bunch of glucose and mash all of those things together into polysaccharides, but our theory is that obviously is not the way or what our cells prefer. Otherwise, we wouldn't be ravaged with all these different chronic diseases today.” - Dr. John Lewis[23:45] “Very broadly speaking, we're talking about the ability for these polysaccharides to improve immune function, lower inflammation, improve adult stem cell production process, and then just generally improve overall quality of life.” - Dr. John Lewis[41:25] “For me, this is cradle-to-grave and all of the in between, there's no limitation on these polysaccharides in terms of how old you need to be, what your current health state is, if you have an existing health challenge or whatever, there's no limitation on that. There's been no documented problems with interacting with medications, in fact, they actually will help when you improve your nutrition status, they help your health status to be able to utilize things that you're maybe being treated for with disease.” - Dr John Lewis"Increasing our health status, giving our body the nutrients it's missing, creates the environment for health vs the environment for disease." - Jenn TrepeckRESOURCES:Become A Member of Salad with a Side of FriesJenn's Free Menu PlanA Salad With a Side of FriesA Salad With A Side Of Fries MerchA Salad With a Side of Fries InstagramGuest ResourcesDr. Lewis Nutrition's WebsiteDr. Lewis Nutrition's YouTubeDr. Lewis Nutrition's InstagramDr. Lewis Nutrition's FacebookDr. Lewis Nutrition's LinkedInBIODr, John Lewis is the Founder and President of Dr Lewis Nutrition™ and past full-time Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. "The fact that music is so important for our constitution - that music is almost how we move in the world, that our own bodies are played through by musical forms, that the way we relate to our own way of being in the world is sort of mediated by music - this is powerful stuff. But it's not always very fitting to us. We hear a lot of music in our lives, we don't always choose what we hear. We don't choose our analyst's musicality, we don't first check what kind of musicality an analyst has. We are bombarded by music; music can be imposed upon us, it can make us feel within ourselves in a way that doesn't feel right to us. There is a lot of complexity here as we think about this matter of music being so central to us. But we can find the music that works for us, but we don't create the music. It belongs to the realm of collective cultural life. There is a lot of struggle in music, and in the analytic setting there is a lot of struggle - because for many patients a lot of the work rests on whether there can be any shared sensory experience or not.”     Episode Description: We begin with recognizing that the process of human musicalization begins in utero and forms the basis of much of psycho-somatic-social life. Peter, Michael and Adam's written collaboration, Here I'm Alive - The Spirit of Music in Psychoanalysis is intended to be a musical book about psychoanalysis - a representation of how music binds us to the individual and cultural domains of life. We discuss rhythmizing consciousness, atavistic vs enhancing music, and the blues as a companion soundtrack for loss and tribulation. We take up the relationship between Freud's dream book and his joke book, how present analytic melodies contain aspects of the past, and how dissociation requires a remusicalization of the psychoanalytic situation. We close with Adam reading a paragraph which includes "The capacity of the sexual drive to propel the body back into musical movement and transmute the seizure of trauma into conducted energy to ground the current."   Our Guests:   Peter Goldberg, Ph.D., is a Personal and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California, Chair of Faculty at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis, and on the faculty of the Wright Institute in Berkeley. He has presented widely and written on a range of clinical and theoretical topics, including the evolution of clinical theory in psychoanalysis, sensory experience in analysis, the concept of the analytic frame, the theory and treatment of dissociative states, non-representational states; and the impact of social trauma on individual psychology. He is in private practice in Albany, CA.   Michael Levin, Psy.D. is a Training Analyst and Faculty Member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. He has taught and presented on topics including the work of Laplanche, phenomenology, and psychoanalysis, and the place of psychoanalysis in cultural and intellectual history. He is in private practice in San Francisco.   Adam Blum, Psy.D. is an Adjunct Faculty Member at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis. He has written and presented on psychoanalysis and the music of Björk, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Stephen Sondheim, Aretha Franklin, and Michael Jackson. He is in private practice in San Francisco.     Recommended Readings and Videos:   Nicholas Spice, “Winnicott and Music” (2001), in The Elusive Child, ed.
