Greg and Aaron react to the film's most memorable and emotional scenes, including the "Strong Side, Left Side" moment, the inspirational locker room speech, and the heart-wrenching hospital scene. Lead guitarist Lenny Davidson left and was replaced by Alan Parker; Rick Huxley, bass & rhythm guitarist also left and was replaced by Eric Ford. Saxophonist Denis Payton left, but wasn't replaced. Dave Clark & lead vocalist remained, and the new four-man band was dubbed "Dave Clark & Friends,"and lasted from 1970 until 1973. It is unusual for a band's debut album to be a serious hit, but Appetite for Destruction was such a success that it catapulted Guns N' Roses to celebrity status seemingly overnight. The emphasis is on “seemingly,” because it would actually take several months to catch on. Seven months after the album was released it had only sold 200,000 albums. MTV wouldn't play GNR because of their overt focus on sex and drugs. They finally were played on an episode of “Headbangers Ball” at 4:00 a.m. on the East Coast. That was all it took for the band to see the turnaround.Paul Stanley of Kiss met the band prior to their being signed, and described them as “a bunch of wastoids.” He was surprised at the energy the band displayed when on stage that night, however. With a straightforward focus on sex, drugs, and Rock and Roll, Appetite for Destruction featured Slash on guitar and Axl Rose on lead vocals. Other band members on this album were Izzy Stradlin on guitar, percussion, and backing vocals, Duff McKagan on bass, and Steven Adler on drums.Steve Hardin joins us once again as guest host to present this album in Brian's absence.Welcome to the JungleThis is one of two big hits off the album, and reflects the thoughts of the band on life in Hollywood, and the big city where anything goes. This is the song that was played at 4:00 a.m. on MTV, touching off the album's meteoric rise after lackluster sales for the previous months.NightrainThis is one of the early songs from the band, complete with cowbell! The name supposedly comes from “Night Train Express,” a fortified flavored wine.Mr. BrownstoneIzzy Stradlin originated this song, with the rest of the band adding on. It tells of a descent into heroin addiction. The subject of the song starts getting up at a regular time, and by the end of the lyrics is “getting up whenever.”Sweet Child of MineThis is the other big hit off the album, and was popular on both pop and rock stations. Axl Rose wrote the words inspired by his girlfriend at the time, Erin Everly.ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“La Bamba” by Ritchie ValensThe docudrama telling of the life of Ritchie Valens was released this month in 1987. STAFF PICKS:“Kiss Him Goodbye” by The NylonsBruce's staff pick features a Canadian a cappella quartet covering Paul Leka, Gary DeCarlo, and Dale Frashuer's 60's hit "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye." This song is a standard of sports events since being used by the White Sox in 1977.“Lips Like Sugar” by Echo and the BunnymenWayne brings us into the college rock genre with this alt-rock crossover from this group from Liverpool. Echo and the Bunnymen formed in 1978 and are still touring and producing records today. While never a top 40 hit, “Lips Like Sugar” was a staple of college radio.“Jane's Getting Serious” by Jon AstleyRob's staff pick continues the alt-rock theme. Jon Astley was a record producer, producing albums for The Who, Corey Hart, and Blondie, among others. This song only reached number 77, so Jon Astley is technically a “no hit wonder.” It was used in a catsup commercial, though!“Back to Paradise” by 38 SpecialSteve Hardin features a song from "Revenge of the Nerds II: Nerds In Paradise." The song is on a 38 Special Greatest Hits album, but never made it onto any of their studio albums. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Fractured Too” by Ace FrehleyThis week's instrumental song is from the Kiss alumnus' solo album “Frehley's Comet.”

After having finished the Exposé diva series, I decided to round out a couple of previous requests for 80's iconic artists. The next entry into the Diva Hall of Fame is none other than Bananarama. Bananarama is an English female pop music vocal group formed in London in 1981 by friends Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward. Their success on both pop and dance charts has earned them a listing in the Guinness World Records as the all-female group with the most chart entries in the world.[1] The group was phenomenally successful in the UK and throughout Europe with a fair deal of success in the US. Hit's like "Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye)," "Cruel Summer," "I Heard A Rumor," and the worldwide #1 "Venus" are staples in their massive catalog. Their overall success heavily relied on popular songs from the past, reinterpreted for a newer audience. It was this successful formula for much of the 1980's that fueled their stardom. Originally, I was going to focus this set on just their eighties output but to make it work, I went ahead and pulled from their 1990 album "Pop Life" which featured Jacquie O'Sullivan who replaced Fahey after she left and formed the group Shakespeares Sister. Overall, this is a fun set that relies heavily on the production work of Stock, Aitken, Waterman (SAW) who are one of the most successful production teams in pop music history. In fact, they are instrumental in the success of our next entrant into the Diva Hall of Fame tomorrow. With the original group intact, Bananarama recently finished a very successful tour in the UK and North America this past August that featured all of their hits. Party Favorz is excited to officially enter Bananarama into the Diva Hall of Fame. Let the celebrations begin! Side Note: I didn't have enough time to preview this set, so please let me know if there are any noticeable errors that need to be corrected.  Album: Bananarama | The Diva Series Genre: Dance, Pop Year: 2018 Total Time: 01:01:34 Shy Boy (Hot Tracks The Edge) Love In The First Degree (Eurobeat Style) I Want You Back (Extended European Mix) I Can't Help It (Ultimix) Preacher Man (Shep's Club Mix) Venus (Ultimix) I Heard A Rumor (Horoscope Mix) More Than Physical (Garage Mix) Love, Truth & Honesty (Hot Power Mix) Long Train Running (Hot Tracks Remix) Tripping On Your Love (Euro Trance Mix) Cruel Summer (Ultimix) Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) (Extended Version)

Washington Monument: A Slow Process

On this date in 1884, the Washington Monument was completed. Here are some things you may not have known about the memorial to the first American President. Proposals for a monument to George Washington started at the end of the Revolutionary War. However, Congress didn’t act until after his death in 1799, when it authorized a memorial in the national capital, which was under construction at the time. However, this decision was overturned by the Jeffersonian Republicans who didn’t want to build a monument to any man, much less one that was the hero of the opposition Federalist Party. It took until 1832 for any legitimate progress toward a monument to be made. That year marked the 100th anniversary of Washington’s birth, which was used by a group called the Washington National Monument Society as a rallying point for a fundraising campaign. Over the course of three years, they raised $28,000, which is the equivalent to more than $17 million today. A contest was held to choose the best design, which was submitted by Robert Mills, who was the Architect for Public Buildings in Washington, D.C. His design featured a flat-topped obelisk, which is a four-sided pillar that tapers as it rises, with a circular colonnade at the base. Picture a combination of a flat-topped Washington Monument atop a circular Lincoln Memorial. The proposal had an estimated price tag of $1 million, or more than $620 million today. The society decided to start construction, hopeful that the progress would lead to further donations to allow it to be completed. It was originally intended to be located at the intersection of perpendicular lines running from the U.S. Capitol and the White House. However, the ground at that location was not stable enough to support such a large building and it was instead built about 400 feet east south east. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1848. Construction continued until 1854, when the money ran out. At the time, the monument was 152 feet tall. Construction wouldn’t resume until 1879, using stone from a different quarry, leading to the difference in color that exists to this day. With sufficient funding, construction moved swiftly. It was completed on December 6, 1884 with the placement of an aluminum cap at the point. At the time, aluminum was rare and as valuable as silver. The Washington Monument is 554 feet 7-11/32 inches tall. At completion it was the tallest building in the world, passing the Cologne Cathedral. It held the title until the completion of the Eiffel Tower in 1889. It remains the tallest stone structure in the world, and, by law, the tallest building in Washington, D.C. Our question: Had the Washington Monument been constructed where it was intended, it would have formed the center of a cross. The White House and the Capitol are on two ends of the cross, what buildings are on the opposite ends? Today is Constitution Day in Spain, Independence Day in Finland, and Armed Forces Day in Ukraine. It’s unofficially National Gazpacho Day, National Microwave Oven Day, and National Pawnbrokers Day. It’s the birthday of songwriter Ira Gershwin, who was born in 1896; musician Dave Brubeck, who was born in 1920; and animator Nick Park, who is 58. Because our topic happened before 1960, we’ll spin the wheel to pick a year at random. This week in 1969, the top song in the U.S. was “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” by Steam. The No. 1 movie was “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” while the novel “The Godfather” by Mario Puzo topped the New York Times Bestsellers list. Yonomi - The Automation Consolidation App Being able to control anything and everything in your home from your smartphone is pretty cool. Having to open multiple apps to do it is kinda lame. That's what the developers behind Yonomi are hoping to solve for you. Sure if you have a central server or hub, you can do it all there and control everything with one app, but is there really one server that can control any smart device? We haven't seen it yet.   Of course, Yonomi can't control any and every smart device you can imagine, but because their approach is different, they have support for more than you can imagine. And it feels like it will be easier for them to add support for more devices faster than a server or hub product could do.   About the App From the Website: “Smart devices are here: Wireless thermostats, activity monitors, networked music systems and a whole host of devices in the home. Wouldn't it be great if they all could communicate together? Wouldn't it be even better if they worked in unison to make your daily routines easier and more enjoyable? Now there is an app that does all that and works in the background so you can get back to the things that really matter.”   “Yonomi resides on your phone and in the Cloud. No need for a hub, controller box or other additional hardware. Yonomi magically finds and enhances your existing connected devices allowing them to interact with one another in ways never before possible.”   Supported Devices August Smart Locks Belkin WeMo Switches, Plug Modules, Motion Sensors, Bulbs and Netcams Belkin Wemo enabled Crock-Pot Belkin Wemo enabled Mr. Coffee Cree LED Bulbs Egg Minder GE Link LED Bulbs Jawbone UP Mimo Baby Monitor Nest Thermostat and Smoke Detector Parrot Flower Power Philips HUE Lights Quirky Aros Air Conditioner, Door & Window Sensors, Water Sensors Sonos Devices Withings Pulse, Activite, Smart Body Analyzer, Wireless Scale   Using the App First of all, the app is totally free. We aren't sure how they plan to make money and stay around for the long run, but hopefully they have a plan. It is a bit scary to rely on it as your home automation server to only have it disappear out from underneath you. But then again, it's free, so you've lost nothing but the time it took to get it up and running. Installing the app is as easy as any other app. Then you register by providing your name, email address and a password. Once done, it scours your WiFi for compatible devices and adds them.   Once you have some devices in the app, that's when things get really fun. It starts by suggesting routines that match with the devices you have. Almost like a Harmony remote, when you add a TV and it tells you that you should really have a Watch TV activity, etc. But it goes way beyond just the devices it found. You can tell it where your home is located and it can use date and time, sunrise and/or sunset, the location of the phone (you leave home, you arrive home, etc) and a lot more to customize your routines.   Much like an automation hub or server, you can configure all kinds of routines to occur based on your life, and even things you didn't know your devices could do. You can have your Sonos speakers talk to you, like saying ‘Don't forget your lunch' at 7:45 in the morning as your kids are headed out the door for school, then play Na Na Hey Hey (Kiss Him Goodbye) by Bananarama as they're walking out. Or it can say, “Welcome home, Dave” when you get back from a long day at work, then start playing your favorite relaxing slow jam mix to help you de-stress. Even turn on some lights and start a pot of coffee.   Events that occur on the phone can set off routines in the smart devices as well. Flash the lights in the whole house when you get a phone call. Mute the Sonos speakers, or pause the music, when you answer or make a call. Have the Sonos speakers announce the weather when you shake the phone. It's fun, easy to use, and very easy to configure. Because the app works with the Sonos Playbar, there are a bunch of cool potential routines to tie into your home theater as well.   We didn't get the chance to try it on multiple phones, to make sure they could set independent routines, like different slow jam mixes when different people arrive home, but since the phone was added as a supported device during setup, we assume it would be as simple as logging into the app with the same account and creating some new routines. We'll try this later and report back.

It’s one of the strangest stories of any #1 hit. “Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye” was credited to a fictitious band called Steam, but it was actually recorded by vocalist Gary DeCarlo and some studio musicians. But, because of some bizarre circumstances, he wasn’t able to take credit or benefit from this massive hit single. The band never garnered enough “steam” – pardon the pun – to muster up another hit, and disappeared. Well, the original Steam may be gone, but Gary DeCarlo is still around, and he’s released a new version of “Kiss Him Goodbye,” along with a brand new album called Long Time Comin’. DeCarlo sets the record straight on the stories behind the hit single.
