We had the pleasure of interviewing The Iron Roses over Zoom video! The Iron Roses are a passionate, unique, and beautiful group of people making music that we hope will change the world. Fueled by the injustices of our current times - their songs are the kind of protest anthems that only a group of seasoned musicians could make. Still angry, still driven, and still screaming – this is a band that will never give up the fight. It takes serious talent to write and sing songs that sound angry whilst the music lifts your spirits. So much of political punk is abrasive and unpleasant. No hooks. No melodies. But other times passionate and irate words sound incongruent with emotionless and insipid music. The Iron Roses manage something rare and commanding with music that lifts the heart coupled powerfully with lyrics that express fury and resentment of the current world.Punk as a genre has been so commodified and diluted over the last decades that it seems to be ever increasingly hard to find bands that resonate this way. That sing and play with such intensity that their authenticity cannot be questioned. That prove that true punk is alive and well and can have you dancing around your kitchen singing along at the top of your voice.Yes, we can discuss their pedigree, most notably their frontperson Nathan Gray (of Boysetsfire), and their relentless touring and political activism. But none of those things matter if the songs don't connect with the listener. And this collection of songs are going to do just that. From the opening notes of the first song the cards are on the table. The objective is clear – The Iron Roses are putting to words and music all the thoughts you've had these last few dark years. With the worldwide political climate leaning further and further from the left. With rights for many being limited and destroyed. With no end in sight. We need bands like The Iron Roses giving us a soundtrack to fight. Songs to pour our anger and frustration into when we sing along - just as they did when they wrote and recorded them – and will be doing so from stage when they hit the road hard this autumn. The beauty of seeing these six individuals singing their truth is astounding. Watching them grow from strength to strength in the last few years it is unsurprising that this record is the outcome. They, and their songs, represent such power, love, and passion – something that we need more than ever in this world today. We want to hear from you! Hello my friends! This week, my guest is Nathan Gray, of Boysetsfire and Nathan Gray and The Iron Roses! He's a very authentic and HUMBLE human. This interview literally changed my life for good. I think we both were very honest about what we think could be improved in the punk scene in general, but also how we could improve our own bands, playlists, etc. How it's important to speak about how we want to make the scene more inclusive, but also look at our own behaviors and thoughts. Wow! I really opened my heart about how sad I am sometimes when I notice some people's reactions and how I sometimes don't know how to deal with this. I think we both put a lot of nuances. WOW ! Amazing moment!!! We also talked about his music projects and how he incorporates different genres in his songs, about his lyrics, touring projects, the new vinyl pressing of the album rebel Songs that will be available on Iodines records in a few weeks, about BSF, etc. This interview is really important for me. Nathan Gray has released his latest album with his band "The Iron Roses" in with the personality of a preacher, and the heart of a revoultionary, not so much Che, or even George Washington, but more, Joe Strummer, yeah, that's it... He gives us this great "East Coast" indie rock feel with the hope to change the world, by looking back at what we have tried to do for so long, and what has, and has not worked. We talked about the music we love, the people that inspired, the feelings that made us all move, and some very introspective points, that I still find myself churning over. This new album matches the passion you feel when he talks, and, he has some great music beyond this album you just need to listen to, and be moved by. facebook youtube instagram #nathangray #lgbtqartists #theclash #theironroses #gonzomusicjournalism #rebelsongs #generationx #theclash #billyidol #midnightoil #thealarm #newmodelarmy

We had the pleasure of interviewing Nathan Gray of Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses, and BoySetsFire over Zoom video! In support of the new record, Rebel Songs, melodic alt-punk band Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses has just announced a 20-date US tour with BlackGuyFawkes. Kicking off on February 25, 2022 in Providence, RI, the tour winds its way west making several stops out to Milwaukee, WI (3/7), Chicago, IL (3/9), back east with a show in Brooklyn, NY (3/16), and ending in Philadelphia, PA on March 18th.With nearly two years absent from the road, the prospect of upcoming tour dates thrills frontman Nathan Gray. “It's the connection that I am most excited about,” he smiles. “Any time I am not on the road, there is an intense void in my life because being on stage is like my personal therapy couch. There is a very palpable energy exchange that happens within live music. It's very symbiotic - I need my audience as much as they need me! Not being able to tour for so long was a real challenge for me to stay above the darkness mentally - that's why I wrote the album that I did!”Refusing to allow this confinement due to COVID to block his creativity, Gray and band turned inward to music and created one of their most anthemic and passionate albums to date. Fired up by both the isolation as well as in response to the division caused by the previous administration, they created a stellar album of fists-raised rallying cries. While the tempo and delivery of his current music may not be as aggressively rapid as his output of his hardcore roots in BoySetsFire, the passion and conviction is still very much alive in the alternative Rebel Songs. The 12 track album was produced by Brian McTernan (Thrice, Hot Water Music, Circa Survive) and radiates the roaring renegade energy that the title suggests. We want to hear from you! Happy New Year everybody. Today, we start the year off with a great interview with Nathan Gray, lead singer of the post hardcore/ punk band, BoySetsFire. Today, Nathan is off and running with his new solo project, with his band The Iron Roses and their new album, Rebel Songs. We had a great discussion about Nathan's roots, coping with his childhood of sexual abuse, and his creative process. A truly great start to the new year. We also talk about creating an awful search engine, the passing of Betty White and John Madden, and we play a great game where Scott must guess the value of celebrity's Cameo's.
Today is our first video and audio interview in this already huge special. We take a little pride in covering a wide range of musical genres and today we have another hardcore legend. Nathan Gray is mostly known for his work in boysetsfire, but since a few years he releases solo albums. With Rebel Songs he has now released his third album and the first one under the monicer of Nathan Gray & The Iron Roses. You can probably tell that I am admiring Nathan and his work a lot and it was a huge dream come true talking to him for so long. We talked a lot about his new album, the ideas behind it and some very funny background stories. I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed doing it.
In this episode, Nathan Gray of The Iron Roses and BoySetsFire talks about performance as a ministry, being approachable at shows, varying levels of popularity in EU versus USA and turning new fans on the recent Frank Turner tour. Plus, building a new career with purpose, the importance of a support network and dealing with social media vitriol. Nathan Gray has played music with their band Boysetsfire for decades. But only once during the band's run did they dabble in ska (“Deja Coup”). But that has completely changed now with Nathan's new group, The Iron Roses, a joyful punk band with heavy doses of ska and reggae. The joy in the band is purposeful, a middle finger aimed at the rise in racism, homophobia, transphobia and fascism, making ska the perfect vehicle for the band's message. This week we speak to Nathan and Iron Roses' co-lead vocalist Beck Fontaine. The group released their debut, self-titled record in October 2023. They've already done some touring and are really excited about the band. And they have big plans for 2024. It's a great record, and they play ska well. But the question on our minds was, where did this band—totally unconnected from the ska scene, with little history playing the genre—come from? And what motivated them to go all in on ska-punk in 2023? We talk about Nathan's love for The English Beat, The Specials, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear and Trojan Records skinhead reggae. Also, we talk about Becky's history with musical theater and how that informs The Iron Roses' unique approach to lead vocals. Plus, we learn that co-host Adam Davis was an extra in the film adaptation of Rent! Nathan talks about the new ska bands that inspire them (We Are The Union, Catbite, Kill Lincoln), the important message in Iron Roses' song “Old Guard,” and we learn about Nathan's long and difficult journey in coming out as non-binary. Plus, we learn all about how Nathan spoke out against Pantera playing a music festival Boysetsfire was booked to play (due to lead singer Phil Anselmo's history of racism). And they tell us about their long friendship and admiration for Frank Turner. Plus, we all took a moment to discuss how much we love the film Swing Kids.
