BOATS THIS WEEK (JUL 29-AUG 4,2024) — There were two major disaster this week in history. The first we'll learn about is an event many consider the worst shark attack in history, which began on July 30th, 1945, and is shown in the movie USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage.  Our next historical disaster marks its 48th anniversary on Thursday this week, and we'll watch the racing movie starring Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl called Rush, because it was on August 1st, 1976, that Daniel Brühl's character in that movie, Formula One legend Niki Lauda, nearly died in a fiery wreck during the German Grand Prix. Then, we'll learn about the "Slap Heard 'Round the World" from the World War II movie Patton, because this Saturday is the 81st anniversary of when General George S. Patton slapped U.S. Army Private Charles Kuhl. Last but certainly not least, our 'based on a true story' movie from this week in history is yet another disaster movie: Ron Howard's 2022 movie called Thirteen Lives. Until next time, here's where you can continue the story. Events from This Week in History Tuesday: USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage | BOATS #48 Thursday: Rush | BOATS #70 Saturday: Patton | BOATS #163 Birthdays from This Week in History Monday: Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie Thursday: William Travis in The Alamo | BOATS #172 Sunday: Louis Armstrong in Louis A Historical Movie Released This Week in History Monday: Thirteen Lives Mentioned in this episode Rush: Original footage of Niki Lauda's crash Did you enjoy this episode? I bet this was the McLaren Racing sponsorship you didn't know about. Back in the 90s, Akira Toriyama (the creator of Dragon Ball) met up with Ayrton Senna at the 1990 German Grand Prix and that led to the popular magazine Shonen Jump to sponsor the Woking team and have their logo on the MP4/5 for the 90 season of Formula 1. What went behind this bizarre collaboration and why was McLaren so popular in the 80s and 90s that it had Japanese sponsors? #F1 #McLaren #DragonBall #Formula1 #DragonBallZ #anime #FormulaOne McLaren F1 Got An Anime Makeover!https://youtu.be/_JjFGIZJo6khttps://youtu.be/_JjFGIZJo6kSourceshttps://thedaoofdragonball.com/blog/history/akira-toriyama-lost-interview-in-germany/https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=6&v=dS-ICcITNjw&feature=emb_logohttp://www.mangaland.es/2014/01/senna/In this video, I dive into the fascinating story of when McLaren F1 was sponsored by an anime! Welcome back to the title race, Jorge Martin! The Spaniard had a perfect weekend, doubling up with a Sprint and Grand Prix win, the latter a back and forth dogfight that had them separated by just 0.064 seconds in the end! But let's be honest here - That's not why you're really here. You're here for Marc Marquez, and the weekend that broke the camel's back. SIX crashes on the weekend, the latter of which on Sunday warm-ups fractured a rib and a finger and had Marquez pull out of the weekend despite being "declared fit". We dedicate the majority of the podcast towards breaking down the peak of Marquez's struggles and how we got to this point. And most importantly - Is it over? And we talk about the state of the field. Ducati had all eight of their bikes in the Top 9 with Jack Miller (who was extra ranty), the only man breaking up the mess. Has their dominance gotten too much? And what could be done to stop? That and so much more on the next Motorsport101!

Before last weekend, Marc Marquez had never lost a MotoGP race he'd started at the Sachsenring. What a contrast the 2023 German Grand Prix was: five crashes (three of them within 20 minutes in a single qualifying session), a trundle backwards to a finish outside the points in the sprint and then a non-start in the GP after a final crash in the warm-up.So is it game over for the Marquez/Honda relationship? That's certainly what The Race MotoGP podcast panel Simon Patterson, Valentin Khorounzhiy and Matt Beer reckon.Marquez's astonishing(ly bad) weekend is the biggest topic of conversation in our Sachsenring episode, from his actions after the dramatic practice crash with Johann Zarco through to his subdued exit from the weekend just before the main race was due to start. But those who actually contested the grand prix do get a look-in too, as we celebrate an amazing battle between Jorge Martin and Pecco Bagnaia for victory, assess what might happen next in the title fight they're now in, and consider the chance of Martin edging out Enea Bastianini for a shock move to the works Ducati fold alongside Bagnaia in 2024.That great race followed criticism from some riders on Saturday of how "boring" MotoGP has become. Not going to lie to you folks, this was not a classic. Round 10 of the MotoGP 2022 World Championship brought the sport to Germany for the German GP at the Sachsenring and Fabio Quartararo broke the one man who could beat him over his knee. Francesco Bagnaia had the pole and the fastest ever lap of the track, but lost the lead at Turn 1, and by Lap 3, was in the gravel. We break it down and ask if his Championship is over? (Probably) We talk about why Germany was such a difficult race to watch. A combination of the sports technological problems dulling the product like ride-height devices (Ignoring the fact that two of them failed mid-race), the front tyre pressures playing a hand in the Aleix Espargaro/Jack Miller fight as passes were at a premium, and asking whether the sport is a bit too fast for its own good. We also talk about an all-time bad weekend for Honda Racing Corporation. For the first time in FORTY years, they left a MotoGP round without a point, and it's only that recent because that round they boycotted. Alex Marquez had a ride-height failure, Taka Nakagami crashed again, and Pol Espargaro had to withdraw because a rib injury suffered in a crash in FP1 meant he couldn't breathe properly while racing in 35 degree heat. Stefan Bradl was their only finisher, last, and with a burnt foot because the bike reached over 100 degrees celsius. So hot, water would evaporate on it. Sounds like a healthy team right? So we have a look at everything that's led to Honda being at arguably their lowest ever point as a MotoGP brand. All that on Motorsport101!

The 1994 German Grand Prix was a memorable weekend for F1 on track, in the paddock and even in the pitlane. Glenn Freeman is joined by Edd Straw and longtime F1 journalist Tony Dodgins – who was at Hockenheim that weekend – to discuss everything from Ferrari's first win since 1990, Jos Verstappen's terrifying pitstop fire, and Benetton's mysterious ‘Option 13' driver aids controversy. We also look back at the latest rule changes introduced ahead of the race - including the debut of the 'plank' under the cars, tension behind the scenes at Ferrari as the Jean Todt era took hold, plus how the ban Mika Hakkinen picked up from this race potentially changed how he raced for the rest of his career. Daniele Audetto was a key figure in arguably one of the most tumultuous and exciting seasons in F1 history: 1976. As team manager at Ferrari, he reported directly back to Enzo Ferrari from each race – and that included giving him the bad news when Niki Lauda was critically injured at the German Grand Prix. In this week's show, 45 years on from that dreadful moment, Audetto recounts that weekend in detail, as well as Lauda's heroic comeback and that tense title finale with James Hunt in Fuji. He also discusses life after Ferrari, and in particular his stints at Lamborghini – when Senna tested and nearly raced a Lambo-powered McLaren – and everyone's favourite minnows, Super Aguri.

A blast from the past.  Designed to scratch that Formula 1 itch we all get when we have to suffer through a weekend without a race; ATO offers you "Once Upon a Grand Prix", a special type of episode where we dive deep into the Formula 1 archives and pull out an old classic.  This week's episode is all about the 2014 German Grand Prix.  We take you way back to a time before Covid-19 took control o the world.  A time when defending 4 time world champion, Sebastian Vettel was struggling to retain his seat at the top of the sport.  A time when (in our opinion) Nico Rosberg was the best driver in the world.  A simpler time when instead of living within the grips of a global pandemic, we could all focus on what's really important, Formula 1.  A time that quite frankly, we would all be happy to return to.  So here you go.  Please enjoy and thank you for listening.
