Andy Morrison will be remembered by most football fans as an outstanding and incredibly tough football player but that doesn't begin to tell even a fraction of his story. Andy suffered trauma as a child and, for a time, alcohol and violence drowned out the noise and damage in his head. In 1999, under the tutelage of Joe Royle and Willie Donachie, he lifted the most important trophy in Manchester City's history, the 1999 Division 2 Play Off, but it was off the pitch where his real triumph was. His last drink was February 1999. He has done so much work on himself and so much to help others, he has worked with prisoners, coached as far afield and continues to inspire and support men, particularly those struggling with alcohol abuse. If you enjoyed this episode go and buy Andy's book The Good, the Mad and the Ugly. Dr. Gee returns to the discussion of his involvement in a university report on the Black Community Experience at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In episode 188 he discussed the upcoming report with UW-Madison Chancellor Jennifer Mnookin and now that the report is public, he is joined by fellow board members on the ad hoc committee. Dr. Angela Byers-Winston and Ray Allen discuss the difference between good intentions and intentionality, when it comes to identifying and creating real change? The ad hoc study group worked to present their critical findings and strategic recommendations aimed at addressing the long-standing challenges faced by Black students, faculty, and staff on university campus. They discuss the question, “What is the systemic inertia to follow through on the recommendations?” Hear the unfiltered conversation about the report conducted by the UW by those that served on the board. All three speak honestly about the process, offering what made them angry or frustrated, and the hopes they have for change. They talk about how creating programs only can't change the DEI issues, but it takes institutional and organizational change. Also, be sure to catch a double portion of the Black Ice Breakers segment. Dr. Angela Byars-Winston is a tenured faculty member in the Division of General Internal Medicine within the Department of Medicine. She is also the inaugural Chair of the University of Wisconsin Institute for Diversity Science, associate director in the Collaborative Center for Health Equity, and faculty lead in the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research. Dr. Byars-Winston has received numerous awards for her research on advancing diversity goals and mentorship in STEM fields. In 2011, Dr. Byars-Winston was selected as a Champion of Change by the White House through President Obama's Winning the Future initiative for her research efforts to diversify science fields. In 2022, she was the recipient of the Innovation in Mentorship Research award from the Association of Clinical and Translational Research. Dr. Byars-Winston chaired the National Academies of Sciences' 2019 consensus study report, The Science of Effective Mentorship in STEMM. She is an elected Fellow in the American Psychological Association and is currently an appointed member of the NIH National Advisory General Medical Sciences Council. Over a career spanning nearly 50 years, Ray Allen has worked at the John Deere Company and served in a number of leadership roles in state government, including Secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. He was elected to three terms on the Madison School Board from 1995 to 2004, has served as chair of the Madison Area Technical College Board, and is the former publisher and owner of weekly newspaper The Madison Times. Irish Distillers and Maynooth University Ireland are partnering on a pilot research project to develop an autonomous regenerative agriculture platform through robotics and sensing solutions, to improve the sustainability of cereal crop production. Through a two-year bursary, Irish Distillers will support a research team at Maynooth University on a journey to develop an efficient and economically viable solution, using robotics, to support regenerative agriculture and improve the environmental impact of cereal crop production. The project will use mobile farming robots, sensing solutions, and vertical solar panels to monitor and manage cereal cultivation, to optimise grain yields and resource utilisation while delivering a resilient ecosystem that nurtures soil health, biodiversity, and long-term environmental vitality. Maynooth University is a leader in pioneering theoretical and experimental research into field and service robotics and associated technologies, with a particular focus on applications where robots and humans collaborate to solve problems. The University Campus is home to a 1-hectare Robot Farm and a Sustainability Research Station. As part of this research project, test plots at the Maynooth University Robot Farm were planted this Spring with a variety of crops and monitored regularly throughout the summer with 3D cameras and soil testing before being harvested in Autumn. The robotics team has developed new imaging techniques that use both the shape and colour of the plant's leaves to automatically determine plant health. Graham Caulwell, Head of Sustainability & Compliance, Irish Distillers commented, "We are immensely proud to invest in the next generation to research and develop innovative solutions to address one of the biggest challenges of our time. With the integration of robotics, this pioneering project aims to support regenerative agriculture while enhancing efficiency. This partnership is more than a commercial alliance; it is the fusion of shared visions for a sustainable future." Professor Rachel Msetfi, Vice President of Research and Innovation said, "Maynooth University welcomes this partnership with industry in supporting the development of sustainable agriculture. This important collaboration aligns with Maynooth University's focus on sustainability as one of our key beacon research areas under the University's Strategic Plan. I would like to thank Irish Distillers for this funding and research opportunity." Maynooth University hosted a workshop on 31 October for Industry, Government, and Research stakeholders titled: "New Approaches in Sustainable Agriculture" discussing new approaches and collaborations in sustainable agriculture and energy production. Speakers included Dr. Jim McBride, CTO Otherlab USA, Karl Walsh from DAFM, Researchers across Biology, Robotics AI, and Business as well as panelists from Wakeup Capital, 2050 Accelerator, industry, and farming groups.

Rob Wilson is Head of Executive Recruitment and Programmes at University Campus of Football Business, which now has sites at Wembley Stadium, Manchester with a global hub in Miami. UCFB is the first Higher Education institution in the world, dedicated to the delivery of University Degrees in the football and sports industries.   Rob on the ISC Professional Network Booster:  “I think it's a really good partnership, because it provides a huge amount of value for us at UCFB and I really hope that it provides a similar amount of value for ISC, by having those UCFB students around, by enabling them to access some of the parallel sessions and the speakers, I think it will really enrich the dynamics at the events and I hope, that in two or three year's time, we find those UCFB students that are working in middle executive leadership roles in sport, and they are on the stage at the ISC delivering a talk to the rest of the members and I think that would really demonstrate the golden thread of the partnership”.   Rob on networking:  “Networking is a crucial part of achieving in any sector. Understanding the people that work in the industries you want to access, but also the environments, the behaviours, the cultures, the mannerisms, the way you need to engage, the time of day you need to engage sometimes. How many opportunities do you have to go into a boardroom at a football club to meet a Director of Football Performance or the Finance Director? You need to take those opportunities and I think what the link up with the International Sports Convention does, is to really accentuate what UCFB are trying to achieve, ie: connecting with the sector and ISC is absolutely embedded in that sector. The speakers that are on offer, the events that are driven, are all the types of people and events that our students need to be able to access, to have those informal conversations and to make their impressions on the employers that might have an influence over them in the future”.   Rob on the evolution of UCFB:  “The sco-system is really important, so I would happily assume that ten or so years ago, when UCFB first started, people did begin to take notice of this new thing in the market place, but didn't really know what it was or what it was offering. But the calls I now have with executives right across the sports sector, when they ask me where I'm from, they say “oh yes, we've got an intern from there”. Rick Parry, the CEO of the EFL did exactly that recently. I think that demonstrates the way UCFB have begun to open up their brand awareness in terms of their students, but also, and this is where its critical, is the students that are going out into those organisations and are undertaking those roles are coming with a higher degree of professionalism and a really good reputation”.

We all kind of got together and developed the campus farm concept actually in response to both the students' interests, but also the needs in our community. At that time, you know, the Shippensburg Produce and Outreach Organization had posted a sign indicating they wanted individuals to grow a role for SPO so that you would have this excess harvest that could go to community members, “said Cornell. In this episode of the Campus podcast, we talk to two experts from leading US institutions – who were both speakers at Times Higher Education's Digital Universities US 2024 event – about how technology is redefining the university experience. Steve Harmon is executive director of the Center for 21st Century Universities at Georgia Tech as well as associate dean of research in professional education and a professor in the School of Industrial Design. He explains how his university has created “co-learning” spaces where students can gather and interact while benefitting from the flexibility of hybrid learning, and how technology from VR to YouTube supports the “learning to learn” skills that underpin higher education. Lev Gonick is the enterprise chief information officer at Arizona State University and chair of the Sun Corridor Network, Arizona's research and education network. He talks about the digital infrastructure required to support inclusive digital education at scale, looking to Hollywood-style immersive storytelling to teach STEM, and why it's vital to align digital goals with the institution's overall mission.

Townhall Review  - April 27, 2024 Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, visits the Columbia University campus in New York City on Wednesday to make a stand for Jewish students who've been victimized by antisemitic unrest on campuses across the country. Hugh Hewitt talks with Speaker Johnson about the recently passed aid packages to Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan. Hugh talks with Mike Pompeo, President Trump's Secretary of State, about the $99 billion security budget and what it means for our allies. They also discuss the New York City sham trial of former President Trump and how unjust and unfair it is to keep him off the campaign trail. Chris Stigall talks with President Trump himself about the Ukraine funding, the border, Hamas, and how the GOP needs to rally behind Speaker Johnson, especially while only having a 1 seat majority in the House. Hugh turns to Retired Navy Admiral James Stavridis about the Ukraine aid package and what the end game will be.  John Solomon talks with Michael Oren, former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, about whether or not the Biden administration could shift their wrongheaded approach to Iran.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
