In this episode, Pastor Andy reconnects with Andrew Turner, all the way from Australia, finding that rare window where Arizona mornings meet Australian evenings. Both men have written books on bivocational ministry—Andy's Part Time Pastoring and Andrew's The Future is Bivocational (https://a.co/d/eqUToXk). While they certainly talk ministry, business, and the rhythms of working two callings at once, it's the deeper layers that stand out: stories of grief and growth, of holding onto faith through seasons of loss, and of finding new ways to speak the gospel into a post-Christian culture. This one isn't just for pastors—it's for anyone wondering how faith and work, pain and purpose, might actually belong together.Support the showSUPPORT THE SHOW BEYOND SUBSCRIPTIONS1. In this episode I speak with Scott Pace and Shane Pruitt to discuss their book Calling Out the Called. We explore the current landscape of ministry, the lack of young leaders, and the importance of inviting the next generation to consider a calling to ministry. The conversation delves into the process of discerning a call, the role of mentorship, and the necessity of creating opportunities for young people to serve in the church. Along the way we emphasize that ministry should be fulfilling and that leaders must be mindful of how they discuss the challenges of ministry to encourage rather than deter potential leaders. We also discuss the challenges and joys of ministry, emphasizing the importance of recognizing a calling, the value of bi-vocational opportunities, and the significance of connecting with the next generation. If you are considering a call to ministry or just desire to be part of a church that equips others to serve in vocational ministry, this podcast is a great resource.TakeawaysCalling Out the Called addresses the need for young leaders in ministry. There are more ministry leaders over 65 than under 40.God is still calling people to ministry leadership today. The process of calling involves personal, private, and public affirmation.Serving in ministry can help reveal one's specific calling.Churches need to create on-ramps for aspiring leaders.Every believer has a universal calling to serve.Ministry should be challenging but not miserable. The Holy Spirit works in advance of a calling moment.Leaders must be careful about how they discuss ministry challenges. Difficult situations in ministry are part of the journey.Fulfillment in ministry comes from serving and loving people.Recognizing a call to ministry can happen at any stage of life.Bivocational opportunities are valuable for churches and individuals.Every member of the church has a role in ministry.NextGen ministry focuses on youth and young adults.Building relationships with youth can affirm their calling.Sharing personal stories of calling can inspire others.Mistakes are part of the learning process in ministry.Creating opportunities for aspiring leaders is essential for church growth.Sound Bites"There's a gap in young leaders under 40.""Every believer has a universal calling to ministry.""The call to ministry is a process, not a moment.""We need to create on-ramps for aspiring leaders.""Serving reveals your calling in ministry.""Ministry should not be miserable.""I get paid to study. Summary Pastor Anderson discusses the transition from being a working pastor to a full-time pastor, emphasizing the importance of full-time ministry for spiritual health and church growth. He addresses the challenges faced by bivocational pastors, shares insights from the Apostle Paul's experiences, and encourages pastors to trust in God's provision as they navigate their calling. The conversation highlights the dignity of full-time ministry and the necessity of investing in discipleship and church planting for sustainable growth. Chapters 00:00 Transitioning to Full-Time Pastoral Ministry13:28 The Role of Tent-Making Pastors22:07 The Dignity of Full-Time Ministry32:40 Investing in Discipleship and Church PlantingTakeaways Transitioning to full-time ministry is essential for church growth. Bivocational pastors play a crucial role but should aim for full-time. Spiritual health is linked to the pastor's full-time commitment. The church's support for its pastor is vital for its success. Tent-making is a temporary solution, not a permanent state. Discipleship is key to building a strong church foundation. Financial security for pastors comes from building their congregation. Pastors must navigate the challenges of bivocational ministry. Investing in discipleship leads to effective church planting. God provides for those who step out in faith. Send us a Text Message.Today's conversation is going to be an encouragement for all our friends who are serving in the ministry, like pastoring a church, or preaching out on the weekends when invited, or serving as a lay youth pastor or worship pastor, while also carrying the weight of a full-time job in the secular arena. But we also hope to encourage so many others who may be considering this prospect in the near, or distant, future. Bi-vocational ministry often gets overlooked by vocational ministers, or even laity whose pastor is bi-vocational, as it can be misunderstood as being “part-time”. But our guest today, Rev. Robert Miller, is going to debunk this, and other myths about bi-vo ministry, easily from his own personal experience.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rev. Robert L. Miller has served as the Chief Operating Officer of the North Texas District of the Assemblies of God and Lakeview Camp since December 2023, and Executive Director of the NTD Church Loan Fund and NTD Foundation since January 2018. Prior to serving in the North Texas District, Robert was the Lead Pastor at New Life Assembly in Collinsville, OK for eight years and has served in Pastoral Leadership for 20 years. Robert was a bi-vocational pastor while working in the financial services industry for 18 years prior to coming to the North Texas District. He holds a bachelor's degree in business management and an MBA from Southwestern Assemblies of God University. He also co-leads an intentional interim pastoral ministry and is currently serving a church as lead pastor through a season of transition since August 2023. Robert serves as Chairman of the Board for Adult and Teen Challenge of Dallas, on the Board of Directors for Assemblies of God Credit Union, is the Founding Chair of the Spanish advanced degree program for Global University, on the Teacher Education Supervisory Board at SAGU, and was just nominated to serve on the board for the National Association of Church Business Administrators. Robert and his wife, Haley, have been married for 25 years and have four children, one son-in-love, two dogs, and one grandson! Ron Nishihara, a Honolulu architect, discusses how he established an online microchurch to support people struggling with cancer.Confronted with his own cancer, Ron's mentor, Tom Nakamine, helped him overcome anxiety and regain composure. Their relationship led to an awareness of others facing the “big C.” Gathering a few friends, they birthed an online microchurch for cancer patients and survivors. Tom moved to heaven early in the saga, but the group lives on.Having begun with immediate friends, they now share with formerly unchurched people.Bivocational leadership allows the group to focus on their love and hope quotients rather than measuring success by numbers or financial goals. The upshot of Ron's story is the power of population-targeted microchurches. Still a member of his home church, Ron sets an example of how a church member with access to another people group can extend the kingdom.Ron emphasizes the value of having faith in Jesus' plan for the world via disciplemaking and outward thinking.According to Ron, the most critical factors that determine the success of their little church are the quality of their relationships with one another and their determination to share the gospel. This episode will provoke thoughts of the possibility that there is a group of people in your church who possess unique access to a people group you are not yet reaching.

Christine talks with Susanne Rodriquez about two topics that rarely get addressed in resources for pastors' wives: bi-vocational ministry and closing a church plant. Susanne and her husband planted a church in New Jersey around 2014, reaching an immigrant population in their neighborhood. Just before Covid hit, they made the difficult decision to close the church. In this conversation, Susanne shares about the tensions for her and her husband as he pastored bi-vocationally and what she learned about how to support and help and sometimes challenge her husband during that time. She gives voice to the church planting wife's experience, like knowing the fine line of when to press for what you need from your husband and when to wait, entrusting yourself to the Lord. In the end, she shares about the disappointment she felt after closing their church and about what success is for those in vocational ministry.
