Even the FBI made posters warning against the dangers. Laura tells the history of how a young girl tragically lost her life and has become known as the vanishing hitchhiker ghost, Resurrection Mary. Many ghostly hitchhiking stories share similarities to Mary. Aaron shares an Appalachian horse riding, hitchhiker story. One day a man picked up a woman who asked for a ride with him on his horse. In the short amount of time that he had taken her to her destination, he became so enthralled with the woman that he went back to her family the next day to ask her hand in marriage, only to find out the woman had been deceased. Alright… enough of all that… let’s get into the town of Millinocket, Maine, a young couple, and the Legend of the Screaming Bridge. It is no secret that Maine is home to scary stories and terrifying tales about creatures in the woods and lights in the sky. But when it comes to ghosts, the stories far outweigh any other type of paranormal phenomena. We have ghosts that occupy old lighthouses, wooded areas, homes too many to count, and of course, haunted roads. In Millinocket, there is a small section of asphalt and bridge located on Route 11 called Brownville Road. Legend says that a fateful night around the 1940s or 50s changed the history of that location forever. From the newspaper of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, the University Times wrote, “On their way back from their honeymoon, a young couple were driving down Brownville Road in Millinocket, Maine. The couple’s car swerved off the road for unknown reasons and crashed. The husband suggested for his wife to stay in the car while he went to look for help. But upon his return, she was nowhere to be found.” The husband, friends, family and ultimately the police, could not figure out what happened to the young woman. Well… at least, not until she began haunting the road and nearby bridge. To this day, Millinocket locals claim to see her while driving through the Brownville Road. A lot of interesting things happened in the year 1884. For example, On May 1st 1884 the dreaded 8-hour work day was first proclaimed by the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions. It was then known as May-Day, we now call it Labor Day (and moved to the beginning of September.) On May 17, Alaska became a US Territory. On August 5th, the cornerstone for the Statue of Liberty was laid. The first recorded photograph of a tornado was taken on August 28, 1884 by an F.N. Robinson in South Dakota and on November 4th, Grover Cleveland won the election for the President of the United States. But one event that you won’t read about in history books or found on a Wikipedia page for historic events for 1884 is an often-overlooked story in the history of Ufology. So… lets dive into the story of the goblin in the woods… This encounter brings us to the state of New Hampshire, the town of Derry to be exact. It was first settled way back in 1719 by Scots-Irish families, but it was not incorporated into the town of Derry until 1827. The name comes from a city in Ireland also called Derry. The town is nicknamed Spacetown in honor of Alan Shepard an astronaut from Derry AND the FIRST man from the U.S. in space, which happened in 1961 and he actually walked on the moon in 1971. Pretty cool. On December 15, 1956, Derry resident Alfred Horne was out in the forest looking for the perfect Christmas tree to bring home for the holiday. Horne went to the woods alone but after a while, he felt like he was being watched. He walked towards the trees a few feet and saw someone or something standing nearby watching him as he worked. The entity was about two feet high. It had a large head with big floppy ears. In place of a nose it just had two nostril slits, and its eyes were covered with nictitating membranes like a snake's. To make things even stranger, the entity was green, stark naked, and had stumpy arms and toeless feet. Horne thought that no one would believe what he saw and actually tried to apprehend the little creature. But as he tried to grab the entity it emitted loud, blood-curdling shrieks. Horne fled from the woods in panic, leaving the little green man behind. What could it have been? Listen to the episode and you decide...
