In episode 621, Megan chats to Jessie-Sierra Ross about her experience of traditional cookbook publishing, including how to pitch, propose and promote a cookbook. Jessie-Sierra Ross is a former professional ballerina turned food blogger and home entertaining specialist. Originally from Boston, she traded in her pointe shoes for an apron, and hasn't looked back since! A self-taught, cook and food stylist, Jessie is the personality behind her blog, “Straight to the Hips, Baby”. Known for her step-by-step recipes, easy elegance, and light and bright photography style. Working alongside her photographer husband, Jessie creates food and drink recipes for her blog, and features in magazines, as well as on TV, via cooking segments on NBC, PBS, and BloomTV Network. Jessie-Sierra is currently working on her latest creative project, a floral-inspired cookbook with Schiffer Publishing. In this episode, you'll learn about the detailed process of recipe testing, photography, the role of an editor in refining the manuscript and the significance of PR and promotion. Key points discussed include: - Persistence is key: Don't give up on your cookbook dreams, even if you face initial rejection. Keep refining your pitch and proposal, and seek feedback from your community. - Build a strong team: Identify your strengths and weaknesses, and assemble a team (e.g., editor, photographer, PR agent) to support you throughout the process. - Invest in quality: Consider upgrading your camera equipment to ensure high-quality photographs for your cookbook. - Pace yourself: Give yourself ample time to create the book, as the process can be more extensive than you anticipate. - Leverage your community: Tap into your existing blog and social media following to help promote and market your cookbook. - Embrace the long game: Understand that promoting a cookbook is a marathon, not a sprint. Focus on building momentum over time. - Outsource strategically: Consider outsourcing tasks you're less comfortable with, such as PR and indexing, to free up your time and energy - do not try to do everything yourself. - Develop a strong working relationship with your editor: Your editor can be a valuable advocate and guide throughout the publishing process. The pinball machine atop the coin-op pedestal for all other manufacturers to reach for… but it was its god-tier status in the 1960s and early 1970s which would ultimately lead to its epic cratering in the 1980s. What led Gottlieb into the Mylstar Nosedive? Was it lack of leadership? Corporate chaos? The recession of the early 1980s? Or was it a lack of creative freedom and adventure in the products? This month Dave and Ron talk about the massive success of D. Gottlieb and Co., the ownership changes which hobbled the company, Ed Krynski's biography, generational changes in Gottlieb, Ron not knowing Europe is a continent, and the games of Mylstar!... Marcia Young started her craft publishing journey by accident, with a newsletter and website for her local quilt guild. With small children at home, she fit in writing around the edges, until almost overnight she saw an opportunity for a new magazine devoted to fiber arts. Fiber Art Now and the Fiber Art Network began at Marcia's kitchen table, and she published it quarterly for nearly a decade. Eventually Marcia was ready for a new challenge, and she realized that Fiber Art Now was ready for a new direction, too. The publication joined with Quiltfolk, a quarterly magazine devoted to the rich community of American quilting. With her first publishing love in a good new home, Marcia found herself exploring a new medium of her own: book publishing. Schiffer Publishing is an independent publishing company whose craft list includes weaving and fiber arts titles (including Thrums Books, a group of titles about international textile traditions founded by Linda Ligon). As the Imprint Lead for Schiffer Craft, Marcia's charges include a range of traditional arts such as leather, clay, and paper. Schiffer's goal, Marcia says, is to be a valued partner in the lives of makers. Silverball Chronicles Episode 24: Data East - Fake It Til Ya Make It Hosts: David Dennis & Ron Hallett Jr. Topic Starts at 9:00 Visit Our Silverball Swag Store https://silverballswag.com/collections/silverball-chronicles Episode Summary It is often through failure that we learn and after the collapse of Stern Electronics, Gary Stern did not give up. He collected himself over a year and then would work with Joe Kaminkow and Shelley Sax on building Data East Pinball. Often the butt of jokes on quality, code depth, and artwork, Data East would become the only survivor of the 1990s pinball collapse and is now known as Stern Pinball Inc. This month we take some time to look at early Data East Pinball where Dave and Ron dive into the collapse of Stern Electronics and who owns their Intellectual Property (IP), PinStar Inc., Joe Kaminkow becoming Dave's best friend, the unsung hero of Data East Pinball Ed Cebela, Navy-issued uniforms, Robocop's awesomeness, how time travel actually works, the rise of The Simpsons, and the legacy of Data East. On today's episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we're talking about yarn bombing with my guest London Kaye. Born in Los Angeles, California, London received her BFA in dance from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. After graduating London realized that her love for crochet, and unexpected joy, came together harmoniously when she began using crochet to interact with the environment and surrounding community. She began installing art daily on the streets of Brooklyn and New York City. Through her time leading workshops and teaching crochet, London came to realize the best qualities of her favorite crochet hooks and combined them together using 3D printing technology to create a unique new style “Crochet Hook with a Twist.” She received a patent for the design. London's career has expanded to collaborating with brands like Starbucks, The Gap, Disney, and The Kelly Clarkson Show. Her book is out now, Crochet with London Kaye. +++++ Today's podcast is brought to you by Schiffer Craft—An imprint of Schiffer Publishing. Silverball Chronicles with David and Ron Episode 21 – Inside the Mind of Lyman Sheats Visit Our Silverball Swag Store https://silverballswag.com/collections/silverball-chronicles Episode Summary There are many stars inside the pinball industry, but few create such an emotional ripple in the hobby when they pass. Lyman Sheats gave so much for pinball and always wanted to give more. A perfectionist who was often too hard on himself, Lyman was always looking for ways to improve his games. This month Ron and Dave talk all about the beginnings of Lyman's tournament dominance, his Data East codes, his first days at Bally-Williams, coding Attack from Mars, teaming up with George Gomez, Lyman's drive for perfection, “In Lyman We Trust”, the Masterpiece that is Batman '66 by KaPow Pinball, and his untimely death which rocked the pinball community.
