Welcome to the latest episode of our weekly podcast where this week we discuss the BIG question and much like the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy, we check in with AI and discuss the results... I mean basically the episode number was 42; so we had to do this ha ha We hope you all enjoy!
“Alice. July 5, 1976. The first time Alice saw them, they were walking side by side on the narrow gravel road that led into the RV park and campground. A boy and girl, moving together in a slow, slouching way with his arm around her shoulders, and her hand tucked into the back pocket of his bell-bottoms. His army-style backpack looked heavy, the seams stretching, a rolled-up orange sleeping bag tied to the bottom.”
They planned it in prison. Then they built the van. Now the toolbox is open… and the girls are disappearing. In Part 2 of this chilling true crime series, Lawrence Bittaker and Roy Norris take their deadly prison pact on the road. Their custom-built torture van—dubbed “Murder Mac”—becomes a rolling chamber of horrors as the pair begins hunting young women across Southern California in 1979. What follows is one of the most sadistic and disturbing killing sprees in American history. Hitchhikers are lured in, driven to remote mountain roads, and subjected to unimaginable torture using pliers, vise grips, sledgehammers, and ice picks. One victim's final screams were captured on audio tape—a recording so horrific it still shocks even veteran detectives today. In this episode: The first abduction: Lucinda “Cindy” Schaefer The brutal murders of Andrea Hall, Jackie Gilliam & Jacqueline Lamp The terrifying Halloween night attack on Shirley Ledford How their own recordings would eventually help bring them down If Part 1 left you stunned by their plan, Part 2 will leave you horrified by its execution. Thanks for wandering through nature with me on another episode of The Nature Wanderer! Episode notes and links:In this episode, I take a closer look at one of the most fascinating and often overlooked processes in nature… seed dispersal.Plants may be rooted in place, but their seeds are anything but still. From tiny parachutes riding the wind to burrs hitchhiking on passing animals, seeds are constantly on the move—spreading life across forests, fields, and even oceans.I explore the different ways seeds travel, including wind, water, animals, gravity, and even explosive dispersal. Along the way, I talk about why timing matters, how plants “choose” the right moment to release their seeds, and the incredible partnerships they form with animals to help carry the next generation forward. This episode is both a scientific look at how ecosystems grow and regenerate, and a reminder that every landscape is shaped by countless small journeys happening all around us.Next time you're outside, take a moment to notice what's drifting, dropping, or clinging to your clothes… you might just be witnessing nature in motion.Support the podcast and other Nature Wanderer projects: Donate here: ko-fi.com/thenaturewanderer Nature journals and books by The Nature Wanderer: Amazon Author Page Nature Wanderer merch: naturewanderer.org/merchNature Exploring storefront: Amazon StorefrontThe Nature Wanderer ClassesLet's stay connected! www.thenaturewanderer.com Instagram FacebookDon't forget to share, subscribe, review, and download to help others find the podcast. Rob and Dan embarked on an expedition to Mossy Creek, Virginia. This location is recognized as Virginia's top spring creek fishing destination, nestled in the Shenandoah Valley just south of Harrisburg, VA. Since Rob has covered this fishery in two prior episodes, the history of the stream is not elaborated upon. On their journey, Rob and Dan stop by the Mossy Creek Fly Shop to chat with Colby. His insights prove to be extremely helpful. Colby shares details about the restoration work that has been carried out on the stream since Rob's last trip. A tropical storm off the coast brings strong winds and rain. The duo intends to fish using terrestrials, with streamers and nymphs as alternative options. We also discover some amusing anecdotes about cow tipping, fishing without shoes, and learn more about Dan. It's essential to wear waders at the stream, no matter the weather conditions. This is a lesson that Rob took away from this road trip. Previous Episode: Fly Fishing Mossy Creek Virginia Produced By Jason Reif Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Writer Files: Writing, Productivity, Creativity, and Neuroscience
New York Times bestselling and award-winning psychological thriller writer, Chevy Stevens, returns to speak with me about writing dark subjects, running out of scary humans, and her latest “home invasion on wheels,” THE HITCHHIKERS. Chevy's debut novel Still Missing became a New York Times bestseller and winner of the International Thriller Writers Award for Best First Novel in 2010. Her popular books, including Those Girls — which Stephen King called “Incredibly scary and suspenseful” — have been published in over thirty countries and optioned for film and TV. New York Times bestselling author Karin Slaughter described her eighth novel, another standalone thriller titled THE HITCHHIKERS (available for pre-order and on-sale 10/7) as "A frightening and viscerally chilling road-trip-gone-wrong story." In Part Two of this file Chevy Stevens and I discussed: How not all Canadians are friendly Starting books with something innocent that morphs into terror Why writing is like dating Her love of the nostalgia of ‘70s Hollywood Why Poltergeist is the scariest movie of all time And a lot more! Since the dawn of the space age, scientists have been scouring the universe for evidence of alien life and possible attempts at communication by intelligent civilizations in the far reaches of the cosmos. While frustratingly little evidence has been found supporting the existence of intelligent life on other worlds, a handful of strange incidents from over the years point to a tantalizing possibility: that attempts at contact have already been made. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we examine the famous "Fermi Paradox," as well as possible cases involving messages sent toward Earth by extraterrestrial civilizations, and why some scientists haven't ruled out the search for alien technosignatures on mysterious interstellar objects like the unusual comet 3I/ATLAS. Chris and Simon hit the road with tales of spectral travelers: headless motorcyclists, driverless hearses, ghostly coaches, and hitchhikers who vanish mid-ride. Highway hobgoblins leap into passing carriages and crossroads—where suicides were buried—are haunted by the devil. Chris steers the conversation to carriages as omens of death, while Simon says it's his way or the highway, as the duo bicker over paths. Chris reveals how she almost became a Canadian road ghost on her vintage BMW R60/2. Simon maps out ghost coach routes, Chris tells of some terrifying first-hand experiences of phantom hitchhikers and the two finally agree on the uncanny habit of road ghosts in always keeping one step ahead. You'll want to keep the car doors locked for this one.

This week on Born to Watch, we dive into the horror landmark that changed the game: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974). Brutal, raw, and grimy in a way that still shocks today, this episode sees Whitey and Damo take on one of the most infamous cult classics ever made, with Morgz and Gow hilariously "noping out" after the first five minutes.Despite its terrifying reputation, the team quickly notes something surprising: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre isn't about gore, it's about dread. Director Tobe Hooper weaponises your imagination with low-budget ingenuity, turning rural Texas into a sweat-drenched nightmare of implied violence, claustrophobia, and screaming madness.Whitey and Damo break down how the film uses its documentary-style visuals to make you feel like you're inside the nightmare. They discuss the iconic opening narration, the genius use of real animal sounds in place of a traditional soundtrack, and the deeply uncomfortable "dinner scene," which remains one of the most disturbing sequences ever filmed. The episode also explores the surprising lack of blood, the history of censorship surrounding the movie (which was banned for decades in the UK!), and why Leatherface, chainsaw-wielding, mask-wearing, and alarmingly agile, became an instant horror icon. There's serious appreciation for how Texas Chainsaw influenced Evil Dead, Seven, Pulp Fiction, and even the style of Star Wars' opening crawl.Of course, this wouldn't be Born to Watch without a few detours:Franklin and his endless whining take a brutal roasting, and deservedly so.Picking up hitchhikers is a bad move.
