In which the Mister joins me in reviewing RETURN TO OZ (1985), from script writers Walter Murch and Gill Dennis, based on characters from the novels of L. Frank Baum, the film is directed by Walter Murch.  In this poorly conceived sequel to the 1939 classic, young Dorothy Gale (Fairuza Balk) must return to Oz to help rescue her friends and save Emerald City from the evil Nome King.  This film clocks in at 1 h and 53 m, is rated PG and is currently streaming on Disney+ but also to buy/rent on Prime Video.  Please note there are SPOILERS in this review.   #ReturnToOz  #WalterMurch  #LFrankBaum  #GillDennis  #FairuzaBalk  #DorothyGale  #PiperLaurie  #AuntEm  #MattClark  #UncleHenry  #NicolWilliamson  #DrWorley  #NomeKing  #JeanMarsh  #NurseWilson  #Mombi  #EmmaRidley  #Ozma  #TikTok  #Billina  #JackPumpkinhead  #Gump  #Scarecrow  #TinMan  #CowardlyLion  @DisneyPlus  @PrimeVideo  #FridayFamilyFilmNight Opening intro music: GOAT by Wayne Jones, courtesy of YouTube Audio Library

It's time to take another romp down the yellow brick road! As part of our miniseries building up to Glicked, we're now headed to the wonderful land of Oz. Renowned editor and one-time director Walter Murch made the fateful decision to make a sequel to one of the most beloved films of all time, The Wizard of Oz with Return to Oz (1985) which had a decidedly mixed reaction.  Dorothy, saved from a psychiatric experiment by a mysterious girl, finds herself back in the land of her dreams, and makes delightful new friends, and dangerous new enemies. (Sourced from Letterboxd) What do Cass, Matt and Jamie think of this 80s dark fantasy spin on the L. Frank Baum books? Who are the Wheelers? Which is Mombi's original head and WHY DOES THE SCARECROW LOOK LIKE THAT?? Shout out to the Nome King with his hot lil ruby slippers. Keep on eye out next time for our Halloweeeeen ep!

Your Stupid Minds whisks you away to a magical fantasy land based on the L. Frank Baum novels that no one has read in the last 100 years. It's Disney's reimagined 1985 sequel Return to Oz! In an effort to reinvigorate its flailing film releases, Disney bought the rights to the Wizard of Oz book series with the intention of revitalizing the franchise. One small issue though: the books are very dissimilar to MGM's beloved The Wizard of Oz from 1939. No worries, the bones are still there: the Scarecrow, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodsman. Oh, they're barely in the sequels? Who are these guys? Gump? Jack Pumpkinhead? Tik-Tok? Also where are the ruby slippers? They're silver? We have to pay MGM royalties to use the ruby ones? Oh dear. Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) won't shut up to Aunt Em (Piper Laurie) about this magical land of Oz where she murdered two witches and saved the Emerald City and all its diminutive residents. So naturally Aunt Em sends her off to a quack psychoanalyst who plans to electroshock this 10-year-old until she stops using her imagination. She escapes the sanitarium and returns to Oz, teaming up with a talking chicken Billina (Denise Bryer), a robotic soldier Tik-Tok (Sean Barrett), Jack Pumpkinhead (Brian Henson) who is, let's face it, just the Scarecrow, and Gump (Stephen Norrington) a talking moose head strapped to a flying couch. Dorothy is determined to save the Scarecrow from the evil Nome King, and must solve a series of puzzles and challenges that were probably more interesting when they were in a children's book. Come along with us on our flying Davenport on this wild adventure!

It was originally written in 1905 as a stand alone fantasy work and subsequently rewritten as an Oz book. Therefore, most of the action takes place outside of Oz in neighboring fairy countries. It tells the story of Prince Inga's quest to rescue his parents from captivity after his island home is ravaged by enemies. With the help of three magical pearls and the more dubious assistance of the excessively jolly King Rinkitink and his surly goat, Bilbil, his travels lead him to the underground caverns of the Nome King where he is united with some people from Oz who help him to free his parents and restore his island kingdom.

He first met Dorothy in "The Road To Oz," and from that time on had a number of adventures in which he discovered such famous Oz personages as the Patchwork Girl, Ojo, Unk Nunkie, the Glass Cat, Betsy Bobbin and her Mule Hank, and many others. Tim and Jen start spooky season early with a shockingly dark release from Disney, Return to Oz.Jen forgot to mention that the main reason the film does not resembles the MGM film from 1939 apart from the Ruby Slippers™ is because all of the trappings of the MGM version were and are copyrighted. In fact, Disney had to shell out to use that plot device in the film. Hence, while Walter Murch's desire to make a moive closer in spirit to the L. Frank Baum material is admirable, it most likely played second fiddle to the demands of copyright law.Additionally, the movie finally made a profit from a 1949 re-release, not “like twenty years later” or whatever Jen glibly claimed.Animator Doug Aberle made a video where he talks about his process for animating the demise of the Nome King. Plus, he includes interviews with the late Will Vinton. If you want more details about the drama between Sarah Polley and Terry Gilliam, you can read an excerpt from her memoir here. The Emerald City of Oz by L. Frank Baum audiobook. The Emerald City of Oz (1910) was the sixth Oz book written by L. Frank Baum, a title he hoped would be the last. In this book, Dorothy and her impoverished Uncle Henry and Aunt Em are on the brink of losing their Kansas farm. Consequently, Ozma invites them all to live in the Emerald City. They then explore the countryside, visiting a series of strange beings including the Cuttenclips, the Fuddles, the Rigmaroles, the Flutterbudgets, and the residents of Utensia, Bunbury and Bunnybury. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry also meet old friends like the Wizard, the Cowardly Lion and the Hungry Tiger, the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, Jack Pumpkinhead and H. M. Wogglebug T. E. The travelers' idyll is brought short by the plot of an old enemy, the Nome King. Seeking revenge for the loss of his magic belt, the Nome King has an underground tunnel built so he can invade and plunder Oz and enslave its peoples. Our friends manage to defeat the Nome King and his allies, but sobered by this threat, Glinda and Ozma decide to cut off Oz from the outside world forever. Happily for Oz fans, forever lasted only three years. Baum invented a way to reopen communications with Oz and eight more Oz books were published between 1913-1920.

As we discussed in our 100th episode, L. Frank Baum's The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz delighted generation after generation of children, and MGM's 1939 musical adaptation became one of the most popular and cherished motion pictures of all time. So it's only natural that in the '80s, Disney decided to pay tribute to these Oz classics in a family film that puts Dorothy in an insane asylum and turns her beloved trio of friends to stone... right? With a surprisingly dark storyline and truly frightening special effects, it's no wonder 1985's RETURN TO OZ scared the hell out of more children than it charmed. (Surprise! It wasn't a hit.) Disney's pseudo-sequel to a film that everybody knows and loves is largely forgotten, but that doesn't stop When We Were Young's hosts from checking back in with the many-headed Princess Mombi, the sinister but fabulous Nome King, and the kooky, cackling Wheelers. Fortunately, young Fairuza Balk and a handful of lovable new comrades, including Tik-Tok, Jack Pumpkinhead, and a sassy hen named Billina, are on hand to brighten things up between shudders.  Is Disney's dystopian vision of Oz worth the return trip? Or do we wish Dorothy had just followed her own advice and stayed home this time around? Return with us to the scary old land of Oz — if you dare! Tik-Tok of Oz - L. Frank Baum - Book 8 Title: Tik-Tok of Oz Overview: Tik-Tok of Oz is the eighth Land of Oz book written by L. Frank Baum, published on June 19, 1914. The book has little to do with Tik-Tok and is primarily the quest of the Shaggy Man (introduced in The Road to Oz) to rescue his brother and his resulting conflict with the Nome King. The endpapers of the first edition held maps: one of Oz itself, and one of the continents on which Oz and its neighboring countries belonged. These were the first maps printed of Oz. The Oz books form a book series that begins with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and relates the fictional history of the Land of Oz. Oz was created by author L. Frank Baum, who went on to write fourteen full-length Oz books. Even while he was alive, Baum was styled as "the Royal Historian of Oz" in order to emphasize the concept that Oz is an actual place. In his Oz books, Baum created the illusion that characters such as Dorothy and Princess Ozma relayed their adventures in Oz to Baum themselves, by means of a wireless telegraph. Published: 1914 Series: Nonestica Continent of Imagination, Land of Oz, The Oz Books Series, Novels Series, Oz #8 Author: L. The Emerald City of Oz - L. Frank Baum - Book 6 Title: The Emerald City of Oz Overview: The Emerald City of Oz is the sixth of L. Frank Baum's fourteen Land of Oz books. It was also adapted into a Canadian animated film in 1987. Originally published on July 20, 1910, it is the story of Dorothy Gale and her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em coming to live in Oz permanently. While they are toured through the Quadling Country, the Nome King is assembling allies for an invasion of Oz. This is the first time in the Oz series that Baum made use of double plots for one of the books. Baum had intended to cease writing Oz stories with this book, but financial pressures prompted him to write and publish The Patchwork Girl of Oz, with seven other Oz books to follow. The book was dedicated to "Her Royal Highness Cynthia II of Syracuse" — actually the daughter (born in the previous year, 1909) of the author's younger brother Henry Clay "Harry" Baum. The Oz books form a book series that begins with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) and relates the fictional history of the Land of Oz. Oz was created by author L. A LOST BAUM FANTASY RESTORED! When sea-raiders invade the peaceful island of Pingaree to carry off and enslave its inhabitants, only young Prince Inga, jolly King Rinkitink, and his grumpy goat Bilbil escape. Aided by three Magic Pearls, this unlikely trio of heroes sets out to rescue Inga's people from captivity, a quest that takes them on adventures across the Nonestic Ocean and into the underground world of the Nomes. The fat King, the young Prince and the sour goat must use their every resource to rescue Inga's parents. Originally written in 1905 as a non-Oz adventure, it was eventually published in 1916 as Rinkitink in Oz, with an Oz ending tacked on for sales purposes. Thanks to a contest sponsored by the International Wizard of Oz Club, Rinkitink now has a new ending written by Andrew J. Heller that is true to Baum's original concept. In King Rinkitink, the characters we have come to know in the story save the day with their wits and courage, instead of interfering sots from Oz (a possible book title, there), such as the insufferable Dorothy, with her bogus "I'm just country girl" persona that fools no-one and the know-it-all Wizard, being dragged in by their ears to defeat the Nome King in a monstrous anti-climax. With the publication of King Rinkitink, the true story, long suppressed by nefarious agents of a certain magical realm with a two-letter name (hint: the second letter is a "z"), can at last be told. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

This week’s episode takes us on a nightmarish journey to somewhere over the rainbow as we all...Return to Oz. Several months after her magical adventure through the land of Oz, Dorothy is back home in Kansas but she cannot get her time in Oz out of her thoughts and dreams. Her aunt and uncle are worried she may have lost her mind and send her to a special “doctor” for electronic shock therapy. While at the hospital/asylum Dorothy befriends a mysterious little girl that helps free her from captivity and kickstarts her return to the land of the Emerald City. When Dorothy arrives in Oz she has a new companion, Billina the talking chicken replaces the lovable Toto, and realizes that things in Oz are not the way she remembers them to be. She quickly learns that the evil Nome King has conquered the Emerald City and imprisoned King Scarecrow. Dorothy assembles a new group of friends to go to the Nome King’s mountain to rescue Scarecrow and release Oz from his dastardly grip. Who thought this was a good idea for a children’s movie? It must be responsible for countless nightmares. How quickly does time past in Oz compared to our version of reality? Do you think Tim Burton saw this movie and said to himself, “I can do better.”? Why doesn’t Dorothy keep winding up Tik-Tok during every moment of downtime? What kind of animal head was used to make Mr. Gump? Why would they save Princess Mombi? How much psychotherapy do you think Dorothy went through later in her life? Thank you for all of the love you continue to show us. Please rate and review the podcast wherever you get it and if you like the show, share it with your friends. Have a great week.

The Emerald City of Oz is the sixth of L. Frank Baum’s fourteen Land of Oz books. Originally published in 1910, it is the story of Dorothy and her Uncle Henry and Aunt Em coming to live in Oz permanently. While they tour through the Quadling Country, the Nome King assembles allies for an invasion of Oz. Baum had intended to cease writing Oz stories with this book, but financial pressures prompted him to write and publish The Patchwork Girl of Oz, with seven other Oz books to follow. In chapter one, the Nome King is angry because Dorothy and Ozma had stolen his Magic Belt. He asks his Chancellor, Kaliko, and General Blug what to do. The King vows revenge upon Ozma and Dorothy.

Tik-Tok of Oz is the eighth Land of Oz book written by L. Frank Baum. Published in 1914, the book actually has little to do with Tik-Tok and is primarily the quest of the Shaggy Man (introduced in The Road to Oz) to rescue his brother, and his resulting conflict with the Nome King. Queen Ann was the ruler of Oogaboo, the smallest and poorest in the land of Oz (except for the peaceful Emerald City ruled by the young Ozma). Ann decides to build an army and overtake Ozma’s throne.
