But now we got the it's kind of two different aspects of this business at this point with the milling the mill and the shop work. “ -Evan Haxo Welcome to a brand-new episode of the Woodpreneur Podcast. Today, your host Steve Larosiliere is joined by Evan Haxo from Hexo Design & Fabrication, a small millwork custom shop in Northwest Connecticut. Join us as we delve into Evan's journey, the intricacies of his craft, and the unique challenges of running a woodworking business. Evan takes us on a journey from his childhood, growing up around his father's millwork business, to his involvement in installs from a young age. He shares how his passion for working with his hands and the influence of his father led him to establish Axl LLC in 2017. Listen now and get the whole story! “ it's so much easier to make something when there's not a spec that you have to build to, if you just have some logs that come off the mill, that look beautiful, turn them into a simple table, something like that weld up some legs, throw it on there, that takes up space, and I don't have the space to store large pieces like that. “ -Evan Haxo The Blend of Tradition and Innovation: Evan discusses the collaborative dynamic with his father and the evolution of their business into sawmilling, emphasizing the value of creating their own materials. The incorporation of a chainsaw mill and later a Norwood reflects their commitment to innovation within the traditional craft. Investing in Tools and Equipment: Evan discusses key investments in equipment, highlighting the value of the bandsaw mill and the recently acquired Powermatic shaper. The discussion touches on the multifaceted nature of their business, including both milling and shop work. Marketing Unique Woodwork: Evan explores their client acquisition strategy, emphasizing word of mouth and collaborations with general contractors and architects. The conversation shifts to Evan seeking advice on marketing their unique tables, countertops, and small furniture pieces. Expanding Horizons: Future Plans for Axl LLC: Evan shares his vision for the future of Axl LLC, focusing on the expansion of their offerings and the desire to establish a showroom. He discusses plans for a new shop and the potential for showcasing their craftsmanship in a dedicated space. “I was like, just max out your mill and get the cash going. Because you you know I'm sure because you're you and your father have been in this business and in your area for so long. “ -Steve Larosiliere Want to get in touch with Evan Haxo: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/haxo_design_fab/
The USDA plant hardiness zone map splits the country into 11 zones, with a and b half zones, based on average winter minimum temperatures over the past 30 years. Although not the last word on plant hardiness and survival, the map has been a touchstone for gardeners to compare plants and determine which are best for their area. The USDA Hardiness zone map was last updated in 2012 and now they have a new 2023 version. As you might expect with global warming, the hardiness zones have shifted. In 2012 there was a significant area of Northwest Connecticut in zone 5 (winter minimum temperatures between minus 10 and 20). That area is gone. Most of Connecticut is firmly established in hardiness zone 6 (winter minimums of zero to minus 10) with a large area along the Long Island Sound in hardiness zone 7. In general across the country, there has been a one half zone shift towards warmer winters. While the winter minimum temperatures might be warming, that doesn't mean we won't get winter cold snaps that will plunge the temperatures well below those minimums. The zones are based on averages, not isolated events. Plants can be killed if the temperatures in winter dip too low for a period of time, regardless of what the map says. So, the recommendation is to grow plants well established in our hardiness zone and, if you're testing marginally hardy plants based on the map, plant them in micro climate areas such as near the house, garage, or the shelter of other trees and shrubs where they are protected from the cold.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Late on a school night, around 9pm, the road was saturated in a dense white fog. But the moonlight managed to pierce through, casting an eerie glow. Inside my red CRV, I had Allie and Jonah with me. Jonah had never heard of the infamous Dudleytown, so Allie and I decided to take him there and show him what all the fuss was about.Deep in the remote hills of Northwest Connecticut lay an abandoned town known as Dudleytown. It had gained a reputation for being cursed, isolated from the rest of society. Early settlers in the 17th century had established their homes on this vast stretch of land. Unfortunately, tragedy struck when all the children in town died under mysterious circumstances. This led to a mass exodus, leaving behind empty houses and deserted farms. Now, Dudleytown stood as an overgrown hill, casting its long shadow on the valley. It was protected by the enigmatic Dark Woods Society. As we ascended the hill in my car, I leaned back, pressing the pedal firmly due to the steep incline. The road soon transitioned into a rugged path, with rocks flying up in our wake. Finally reaching the top, I switched off my headlights and parked the car beside a bush.Subscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesFollow us on YOUTUBEJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEStory One - RetellingStory Two - RetellingThanks so much for listening and we'll catch up with you again next week for some more true, scary stories.Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Graziella Coffee Tony Ponte Brooklyn, New York Episode 81 Graziella Coffee Company This week we are in Brooklyn New York where we caught up with Tony Ponte, owner and founder of Graziella Coffee, a small batch roaster, with a strong family history in coffee and proud Italian lineage. His coffee story begins with his maternal grandparents who immigrated from Italy and his paternal grandparents who owned and operated a coffee shop. The Pesce's grew up in Southern Italy on the family farm before immigrating to Northwest Connecticut. His paternal grandparents opened up a franchise location of a family coffee shop, which had originated in Rhode Island called Bess Eaton Donuts, when they arrived. Wait... so its not Bessie and Donuts? Oh the trouble we can get into. They definitely passed on their work ethic to Tony. At least initially, that did not include their love for coffee, either as a utility or a social lubricant. Working in the coffee shop, that had since been taken over by his uncles and father, he realized that he didn't really enjoy coffee or donuts. Luckily for us that was early on in his life. So, when did he develop his refined palate for coffee and does he like donuts now? By the way just who doesn’t like donuts? I can hear Homer Simpson crying out …Mmmm….doughnuts… drooling and ….doh. Like his grandparents before him he gradually started to drink coffee as a utility, to get him through the work day. How did that change to a love of coffee? Enter his biggest influence, and the sage advice, from his good friend that changed his career path. Before jumping into a career, why not take a 30 day motorbike tour of Vietnam with your girlfriend! What could possibly go wrong? Never mind that he couldn't ride a motorbike. What about being held hostage, and riding four to seven hours a day dodging semis, one lane roads and in the pouring rain! And what was the one song refrain that got him through....oh, oh oh I'm...., listen for the rest of this tune and the proper way to sing it! Just how much should you pay for a cup of coffee? Be prepared for a math lesson, that makes complete sense, and one that you will be telling your friends about! Learn why it's so important to expose people to the plight of the coffee farmer and sustainability. How do we keep this dialog alive, and just where can we buy ethical coffee? We had to stop our interview due to wailing fire trucks passing by but this very introspective coffee roaster gave us a new perspective on all things emergent, and what it truly means to live in a big city. Classic take. All this and Literary Latte and a Spotify playlist... favorite music and book can tell you a great deal about a great guy. Join us this week as we introduce you to Graziella Coffee and Tony Ponte we are so glad your grandparents immigrated from Italy. Truly a family tradition Bevo alla tua salute, we drink to your health! https://graziellacoffee.com/ http://bit.ly/GraziellaCoffeeRoadshow

Later, he took part in the United States, Monaco and Dutch Grand Prix races.
