Will Dallas-Fort Worth get snow this week? Chances of wintery mix are rising ... and more news

Plenty of sunshine on the way today but it will be significantly cooler than it was over the weekend with a high of only 38. The low tonight will be 24. Chances are rising that North Texas could see some form of wintry precipitation this week. The cold is projected to stay over the area all week, and temperatures are expected to rise above freezing most days before falling again each evening. According to the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, a forecast discussion on Sunday mentioned that there is a “high confidence in wintry precipitation” from Wednesday night through Friday morning with a “70-80% chance of at least measurable, or a tenth of an inch of snowfall accumulations.” The highest chance of precipitation is Thursday night into early Friday, but the chance of precipitation starts as early as just after midnight Thursday. Snow and ice could accumulate Friday morning, but it is unlikely to last for a prolonged period as the forecast high that day in Dallas is 43; At First Baptist Dallas, construction workers have embarked on the painstaking work of demolishing and preserving high-value pieces of the church's historic sanctuary, which was heavily damaged in a July fire; And the Cowboys' season finally ended Sunday at AT&T Stadium against their long-time rivals the Washington Commanders. The Commanders defeated the Cowboys 23-19 as the season ended in dramatic fashion when Marcus Mariota connected on a 5-yard touchdown pass to receiver Terry McLaurin with three seconds left. The Cowboys finished the season 7-10. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

With Autumn on the horizon, it's time to say a fond farewell to the 2024 garden season. But that's not to say there is still a tremendous amount of gardening to be done. Lucy has been revelling in her Fruit and Veg with Autumn being the crescendo of harvest time, and Saul willed an Indian Summer so his last few exotics could flower before being tucked away for some well deserved winter rest. Otherwise there are still lawns to cut, leaves to be raked and a lot of planning for 2025!BRRRRRR! This week saw a northerly, artic blast hit the UK, and for lots of people their gardens got covered in Snow. Lucy and Saul weren't the only ones donning their thermals, mittens and garden jumpers, as conditions outside turned decidedly wintery. But what do gardeners get up to when it's cold and many jobs are impractical? Well in fact there is quite a lot to be getting on with as we get ready for the warmer dreams of Spring. Pruning, greenhouse work, collecting seed and maybe an extra cup of tea or two, all feature as the Talking Heads pair thoroughly prepare themselves for a few months of less clement weather.  Twitter links:Saul @GardeningSaulInstagram Links:Lucy lucychamberlaingardensIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show

2024 could be an exciting year for Wisconsin agriculture with the new transportation opportunities provided through the Port of Milwaukee.  Pam Jahnke made a visit to the site where The DeLong Company has invested millions to get Wisconsin agricultural products rolling worldwide.  She talks with The Delong Company's export specialist, Brandon Bickham, about the hot spots for Wisconsin goods, and how ag products move overall across the Midwest to the world marketplace.Today Wisconsinites are facing some snowy weather.  While many consider it a challenge/pain, farmers look at it as moisture.  Charitee Seebecker talks to Shane Hubbard, researcher at the the Space Science and Engineering Center at UW-Madison.  He explains why this moisture is welcome, since parts of the state are still facing a deficit.  He also explains how hurricane's impact Wisconsin's weather.John Hineberg, market advisor with Total Farm Marketing in West Bend, joins Pam Jahnke to talk about lackluster exports impacting the new year markets. The World Ag Supply Demand report is out this week, and it could be a market mover. Winter weather is moving across the U.S. and also influencing what's happening with not only cattle movement, but cattle markets.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There is a particular kind of joy in the simple act of curling up in an armchair with a book on a winter's day, or going to a café with nothing to do but take in the next chapter, or going to bed early and sitting up against soft pillows to read by lamplight. Words can be a real comfort in the darkest of seasons - both those we read and those we write. I hope this episode inspires you to pull down a favourite book off the shelf and have a read, or perhaps treat yourself to some poetry, or a new story, or a self-help book that is going to carry you through the winter.
