We were joined by Pamela Hart, acclaimed author of historical fiction and recent convert to the world of crime fiction authorship, to talk about her latest novel 'An A-List for Death', the second novel in the Poppy McGowan series. While looking after her aunt Mary, Poppy goes to find out why Mary's neighbour is late to visit, only to find Daisy bleeding with a wound to her head in her home. The police won't believe it was any more than an accident, and Poppy's keen eye soon has her embroiled in a race against the clock. Daisy can't remember what happened, but can her would-be attacker risk that memory ever coming back? In this (mostly) spoiler-free discussion, we talk more about the lessons Pamela brought from historical fiction, pantsing, and how characters lives off-screen mould them. If you're heading to BAD: Sydney Crime Writers' Festival the morning this comes out, or attending online, 'And Now For Something Slightly Different' is on at 10:30AM, with Pamela's 'Mystery Writing: The Victim is the Story' workshop from midday. The festival runs from 8-10 September 2022 at the State Library of NSW. Thank you to the festival's team for putting us in touch with Pamela, and providing Death of the Reader media tickets.

Also true crime (just kidding we love you too). BAD runs from the 8th to the 10th of September, and tickets are available both via the festival's website, or at the door. We discuss chapters 1-7 of the eleventh Albert Campion novel by Margery Allingham. A man who does not know himself awakens in a war-emptied hospital, and overhears word that he has killed a policeman. In a panic, the man pulls the fire alarm and flees in an unlocked car outside. A daring chase follows wherein he is tailed by his fiancé and the man he was supposed to meet, had he remembered he was supposed to do so. It turns out he was investigating the Bridge Institute for... something. Probably the card game, right? We're also joined by author Pamela Hart to talk about 'An A-List For Death', the second Poppy McGowan novel, ahead of two events at this year's BAD: Sydney Crime Writers' Festival. Catch Pamela on Friday the 9th of September, from 10:30AM at the 'And Now For Something Slightly Different' panel, or her workshop 'The Victim is the Story' from 12:30PM.

The Silver Linings Playlist

We're back in the saddle with the premiere of Season 5, and in keeping with our Aronofsky tradition, we kick off the season by doing some long division to try to find the end result of Pi. Did this film indirectly influence The Matrix? What's going on with those ants? And why did so many metal bands from the early 2000s sample this movie? We'll get to the bottom of all of that, plus we'll discuss the theory that Mark Margolis is a vampire, the laws regarding wearing a hat in your dreams, the strange distribution rights to Phantasm II, and so much more. And to top it all off, we'll introduce our new permanent co-host (and fantastic past guest) Nathan Simmons. It's about to get weird, y'all.Pi stars Ben Shenkman, Sean Gullette, Stephen Pearlman, Mark Margolis, and Pamela Hart. In this special edition of Writes4Women Pam hosts the launch of Digging Up Dirt by best-selling author Pamela Hart recorded at Berkelouw's Leichhardt on June 10. The two Pamela's have known each other for quite a few years  and apart from sharing a first name also share a love of writing and books, particularly stories about women toughing it out in difficult circumstances even when all the odds are stacked against them. Pamela has written across many genres, as Pamela Freeman and Pamela Hart, including biography, epic fantasy, children's, poetry, crime fiction, historical and now cozy mystery. Digging Up Dirt is a change of genre for Pamela but there are many common threads with her previous books, in particular a protagonist who refuses to go down without a fight. The launch is in the second half of the podcast, after Pam's writing news and new release round up. As the launch was recorded live there are a few sound glitches but nothing that should impede your enjoyment of this fabulous event. Prolific, multi-award winning Australia author, Pamela Hart, is back on the Convo Couch chatting about her latest release "The Charleston Scandal." Pamela wears two author hats and the last time she was on the Convo Couch she was speaking with Kel as her alter ego, Pamela Freeman.  This time around Pamela gets under the layers of writing her latest book with Pamela Cook, why she pens under two names and how history continues to inspire and excite her like nothing else.  Here’s a look inside The Charleston Scandal… London, 1920s: Kit Scott, a privileged young Australian aiming to become a star, arrives in the city to find the Jazz Age in full swing. Cast in a West End play opposite another young hopeful, Canadian Zeke Gardiner, she dances blithely into the heady lifestyle of English high society and the London theatre set, mixing with a cast of real-life characters including Noel Coward, Fred Astaire and his sister, Adele. When Kit is photographed dancing the Charleston alongside the Prince of Wales, she finds herself at the centre of a major scandal, sending the Palace into damage control and Kit to her aristocratic English relatives – and into the arms of the hedonistic Lord Henry Carleton. Amid the excesses of the Roaring Twenties, both Zeke and Kit are faced with temptations – and make choices that will alter the course of their lives forever. The Charleston Scandal is largely inspired by the stories of Madge Elliot and Cyril Ritchards, Australian actors who went to London in the 1920s and became big stars. As Pamela says – “They were ‘Our Madge’ and ‘Our Cyril’, and eventually came home to get married in 1936. It was the biggest wedding Australia had ever seen – imagine if Nicole Kidman got married to Hugh Jackman. There were 5000 people in Hyde Park in Sydney waiting for them to come out of St Mary’s Cathedral. If you love The Crown you'll love The Charleston Scandal. And if you love a sneak peek behind the scenes of how a writer puts a book together you'll love this episode. A poet and a fiction writer meet at Émile Nelligan's grave--figuratively, of course. Or is it literally? Kelly, whose recent poetry collection draws on Irish and French landscape and psychogeography, and Yiwei, whose latest novel was banned in his country of origin, talk about the writers that haunt them, and the writers they haunt. Also discussed: travel and the influence of place; spiritual fathers; Heaneyboppers; Europe's smallest church. Xue Yiwei is the author of 20 books, including five novels, six collections of short stories and five collections of essays. Shenzheners, his first book, and Dr. Bethune's Children, his first novel (both translated from Chinese into English), are published by Linda Leith Publishing. Kelly Norah Drukker is the author of Small Fires (McGill-Queen's University Press, 2016), a first collection of poems that won the A.M. Klein Prize for Poetry, the Concordia University First Book Prize, and was a finalist for the Grand Prix du livre de Montréal. Should you tell your story as fiction or memoir? More importantly, which will get you into more trouble? Two writers talk about the fine line between autobiography and stuff you make up. Also discussed: Winter as hazing ritual; language- and code-switching; Leonard Cohen singalongs; the relationship between Middle East politics and parenthood. Plus, a new segment: Quebec Libris, where local writers talk about local books. The first segment features poet Jay Ritchie recommending "Melody: Story of a Nude Dancer" by Sylvie Rancourt. Ariela Freedman is a writer and professor at Concordia University. Her debut novel, Arabic for Beginners, came out in 2017 with Linda Leith Publishing. Elaine Kalman Naves was born in Hungary, grew up in Budapest, London, and Montreal, and is the author of eight books, among them two award-winning memoirs about her family: Journey to Vaja, and Shoshanna's Story. What does it mean to be a writer in a post-Trump, post-Alt-Lit, social-media-driven, content-saturated era? Alex Manley and Guillaume Morissette talk about how writers can engage politically, the responsibilities and limitations literature has to "shift the culture", and if men can write complex women characters. Also discussed: negative reviews; Drake vs. Blake; videogames and the quest for meaning; progressive dating advice; moving to the woods and giving up on art.
