Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1998 cyberpunk thriller, Pi – written/directed by Darren Aronofsky; starring Sean Gullette, Mark Margolis, and Ben Shenkman. A paranoid mathematician searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature.I watched Pi on VHS back when I was in college in the late-90s and it changed my entire outlook. It is the film that made me want to become a filmmaker and Darren Aronofsky was my new favorite director. When I first went to Boston University, I wanted to go into sports broadcasting, I thought I was going to be on ESPN or WFAN and being a sports journalist. Well, I saw this movie, and the rest is history. It was unlike any other movie I had ever seen. It was indie-rock cyberpunk. It was black and white. It was dangerous. It was experimental.  It was guerilla DIY. It was fucking awesome. So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. You know what time it is! ARONOFSKY SEASON! NOAHChapter 3, Episode 2: So the Voice of Kenneth spake unto The Good, The Pod, and the Ugly, and it sayeth: Let there be NOAH (2014); and all the peoples then of the world rejoiced for Darren Aronofsky for his blockbuster that bringeth forth He of the Scarf his firsteth and onlyeth picture to be No. 1 opening weekend at the box office. As the temporal pincer movement winds down, guest Ryan returns with an extra squeaky chair to discuss this bold and big-budget entry into the Aronofsky canon. According to research by Thomas, Paramount's marketing budget for Noah was over $100M, nearly as much as it cost to shoot the film, airing advertisements during commercial breaks in the Super Bowl and the 2014 Winter Olympics. This Easter weekend release would also have YA and graphic novel tie-ins.Russell Crowe, who as offered the lead role of The Fountain, plays the titular Noah, Anthony Hopkins plays his grandfather Methuselah, and Logan Lerman is a joke to Ken's begats for some reason. Ari Handel returns to produce and puts quill to parchment with Aronofsky for their second corroborative writing credit (their first being Chapter 3, Episode from last week's The Fountain), Matthew Libatique shoots, and Mark Margolis plays a Watcher (a stone angel fallen from Heaven during the Creation that lusted for Earthly women and would father the Nephilim because—you know what? not worth your time reading). And Jennifer Connelly returns (last seen in Requiem for a Dream).  Listen closely for the glee in Thomas's voice as the hosts comb through repetitious verses of Genesis desperate for the dry ground of understanding after being flooded with Lord of the Rings-style imagery for 2 hours and 18 minutes. Stay awake for when his dogs reacting to Ken's fond desire to adopt an armadillo dog. And hear Ryan suggest that Tubal-Cain had some good ideas. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken Koral

THE FOUNTAINNo one expects the Spanish Inquisition, and no one expected Darren Aronofsky to follow up the success of Requiem for a Dream with a genre-breaking, scyfy-romantic-period-spiritual-medical drama (kinda? maybe?) entitled THE FOUNTAIN (2006). Join your hosts Ken and Thomas along with returning guest Ryan for Season 11, Chapter III, Part A as they drink from The Fountain, a movie garnering no award nominations and would, after wrapping, temporarily break up Aronofsky's partnership with cinematographer Matthew Libatique. Aronofsky's biggest (and only) flop to date, The Fountain concerns three timelines. These intercut stories are populated by then-girlfriend Rachel Weisz and then-between-Wolverines-and-musicals Hugh Jackman (in three iterations of the name “Thomas”) where they play Spanish queen and her loyal conquistador servant, a terminally ill wife and super-science primate neurologist, and a tree (or apparition) and hairless yoga enthusiast in a bubble travelling to an exploding star. These past and future timelines may or may not exist, perhaps part of a pretentiously hand-written, leather-bound manuscript by the dying Weisz-wife character, who left the final chapter incomplete for Dr. Tommy to compose after her death.Pod-favorite actors Mark Margolis returns as a priest and Ellen Burstyn returns as Dr. Tommy's boss and tree/cemetery owner, while Clint Mansell returns to score the film. The movie also marks the beginning of Aronofsky's ongoing writing partnership with Ari Handel.Join the hate watch as our three cineastes yell in unison from across timelines: “Finish it!” THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken Koral

DARREN ARONOFSKY CHAPTER TWO, PART ONE:Deuce by you! Deuce by you! Whoa #2! REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (2000), Darren Aronofsky's second film, follows these three simple rules for success:#1 Adapt a novel you love. – As a college student, Aronofsky fell in love with Hubert Selby, Jr.'s LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN (1964). He'd owned a copy of Requiem but hadn't finished it until he lent it to his producer (Eric Watson) wanting something to read while on vacation who said they had to make it into a movie. Talk about worst beach read ever!#2 Reuse successful techniques of your first film. – Experience the return of the Snoricam and hip-hop montage but now in color! Experience Clint Mansell's movie score, but with strings! And bring back your actors from Pi: the concerned neighbor (Samia Shoaib) now cast as a nurse, your less concerned neighbor (Ajay Naidu) as a mailman, the retired math professor (Mark Margolis) as the pawn shop owner, your conspiratorial Hasid (Ben Shenkman) now as an admitting psychiatric doctor, the weird singing man on the train (Stanley Herman) your “ass-to-ass” man at a disturbing orgy scene, and the star of your first film (Sean Gullette) as a sleazeball psychologist paying his patient to sleep with him.#3 The third thing? Well, that's a Tappy Tibbons secret. Be excited, be-be excited!Hear returning guest Shannon's take on the first 2/3rds of the novel. Hear the ache in Thomas's voice for the lapsed runner's high after ankle injury. Hear Ken howl in desperation and grind his teeth for his 49'ers come Super Bowl Sunday. THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken Koral

This week we say hello to the little friend as A DePalmber to ReMalmber begins with 1983's Scarface, directed by Brian DePalma, written by Oliver Stone, and starring Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer, Steven Bauer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, Robert Loggia, F. Murray Abraham, Harris Yulin, Mark Margolis, and Richard Belzer. It's an opulent operatic journey to the American Dream, a slick and stylish directorial effort that truly proves subtlety is for cowards. It's an unseen from J Mo's collection that's been gathering dust for north of 17 years, and though a bout with COVID prevented him from joining us for the entire episode, Elite Prospects and EP Rinkside editor-in-chief J.D. Burke calls in and leaves a voicemail in defense of a hot couch classic, and one of his all-time faves. Other works discussed in this episode include Fight Club, Joker, Terminator: Salvation, Top Gun: Maverick, No Hard Feelings, Thanksgiving, Grindhouse, Totally Killer, The Final Girls, Freaky, Happy Death Day, Hostel, the Scream franchise, Payback, Pokerface, Paul T. Goldman, Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, Independence Day, Over The Top, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Macbeth, GoodFellas, Casino, The Irishman, Jack & Jill, Heat, Dog Day Afternoon, and Hunters, among others. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to our discussion, Scarface is currently streaming in Canada on Netflix, Amazon Prime and Starz at the time of publication. We'll be back next week as A DePalmber to ReMalmber continues with Carlito's Way, a movie currently streaming on Amazon Prime in Canada. Until then, see you at the movies!

It's his last episode as lovable Jimmy on The Equalizer and packs the most emotional punch. Jimmy acts as Big Brother to a fatherless boy named Tomas. It's a sweet relationship but gets a bit muddy when the boy's father shows up, and then a cartel and the agency and the DOJ are all chasing after him. We pay tribute to Mark Margolis the actor and the character Jimmy while also wondering if Jimmy is really a good fit for the Big Brother program. Also featuring a great guest spot by Hector Elizondo, snake tattoos, and more EQ series callbacks than usual, e.g. microdots. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/

Madeline Taylor knew she wanted to become an actress from an early age, and she transferred drive toward action in a swift series of steps at the age of 8. As a 10 year old, she made her feature film debut in The Girl Next Door (Blanche Baker; Mark Margolis; Blythe Auffarth) as the sister of a teenager severely abused by their caretaker aunt and a neighborhood gang of boys. Madeline played a character who has polio; has to wear a leg-brace; and is subject to witnessing the gravity of the trauma which takes place. The film, which was based on a true story, was a 50's period piece, and demonstrated Madeline's ability and interest to take on darker, more adult roles which warranted serious discipline and commitment. Since then, she has acted in several significant works of film and television, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit; Rectify (SundanceTV); Banshee (Cinemax); Army Wives (Lifetime); and The Inspectors (CBS). In addition, she worked on the acclaimed HBO mini-series John Adams (Paul Giamatti; Laura Linney; David Morse) which won 13 Emmy Awards during its run; she played “Young Nabby Adams,” daughter of John and Abigail Adams and was directed by Academy Award winner Tom Hooper. Her collaborative acting work with veteran actor Estes Tarver culminated with Changeover, a film ahead of its time which examined the affect of trauma on mental health in a high school student who attempts to deal with significant loss and grief. And she explored comedy and improvisation in her leading role in Raliegh, I Kinda Like You (Reid Hutch; Bill Frost; Tor Ramsey), which brought her to her home state of North Carolina. We discussed the value of independence during adolescence; trauma in characters; stage combat; the ensemble element of performing; Little Miss Sunshine; and growing as an actor, performer and personally.Opening Credits: HoliznaCC0 - Western ShowDown; Closing Credits: Miseryslims - Cub's World

The Equalizer Season 3 Episode 3: Suspicion of Innocence Aired on CBS: September 30, 1987 Directed by: Russ Mayberry Written by : Robert Eisele Featuring: Vincent D'Onofrio, Ann Wedgeworth, John Randolph, Mark Margolis, a little James Eckhouse So. There's a lot of words to throw around - problematic, of its time, doesn't age well. A few things are for sure. This is a very special episode. The Equalizer (the show and the character) had its heart in the right place. And this episode is not to be missed. Following an epic two parter that started the season, The Equalizer turns its focus to a mentally disabled man falsely accused of murder. And Vincent D'Onofrio gives it his absolute all as the lead guest performer. And this is 1987, and The Equalizer isn't much known for subtely. Yeah, there's a lot to process. And process it we do, diligently cataloging other similar performances of the time and the larger topic of how to view past representations of sensitives issues. A very special podcast episode about a very special episode. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com

The Equalizer Season 2 Episode 8: The Line Aired on CBS: November 26, 1986 Directed by: Russ Mayberry Written by : Steve Volpe Featuring: Giancarlo Esposito, Mark Margolis, Novella Nelson, David Leary, Norman Parker, Joe Grifasi A meaty concept: The Equalizer goes up against a ragtag citizens patrol group. Between them, a vengeful brother, and the actual police, the show could reflect on different viewpoints and methods for doling out justice. But unfortunately we don't get much of that and those searching for larger themes might be left wanting. But there's still plenty of absurdity, some good bursts of action, a punchline to one of the few through stories (Jimmy's divorce), not to mention both Gus Fring and Hector Salamanca from Breaking Bad in the same episode! Today on the Rarified Heir Podcast we are talking to Morgan Margolis, son of Mark Margolis aka Salamanca in Breaking Bad aka The Shadow in Scarface aka Mr. Shickadance in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Morgan was our very first interview, done within the hallowed halls of The Federal Bar, which he runs as one small part of The Knitting Factory Entertainment where he is CEO. This is another episode taped in person, pre-Covid and we talk to Morgan about his time as a child growing up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and his days skateboarding at the base of the World Trade Center in the 1970s. We hear all about his parents hippie existence putting on productions on the east coast in a VW van, his father's psychedelic awakening as a parent early, his lean, early years acting in small films and TV shows, waiting for his break while waiting tables and his first role on film in an adult film. Ahem. Morgan also waxes philosophical about his days acting in television, his own days waiting tables that led him to his current gig and his motley ‘crew' of friends who all went on to fame in acting, music and business. Curious? You won't be. Answers are coming up next on the encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

We're back in the saddle with the premiere of Season 5, and in keeping with our Aronofsky tradition, we kick off the season by doing some long division to try to find the end result of Pi. Did this film indirectly influence The Matrix? What's going on with those ants? And why did so many metal bands from the early 2000s sample this movie? We'll get to the bottom of all of that, plus we'll discuss the theory that Mark Margolis is a vampire, the laws regarding wearing a hat in your dreams, the strange distribution rights to Phantasm II, and so much more. And to top it all off, we'll introduce our new permanent co-host (and fantastic past guest) Nathan Simmons. It's about to get weird, y'all.Pi stars Ben Shenkman, Sean Gullette, Stephen Pearlman, Mark Margolis, and Pamela Hart. Selena: The Series chronicles the life, career and untimely murder of Tejano singer, Selena in 1995. Her success and rise to stardom was cut short at the hands of Saldivar, an RN and president of Selena's fan club. Perez realizes the delicate nature of her true life character and her intention in doing interviews is not to glamorize or glorify Saldivar. As an actress she is proud of her work and honesty in portraying this complex character and hopes that this series continues to honor and pay homage to the talented, intelligent and beautiful human being that was Selena. Perez played a villain for the first time on 2019 on the Prime released teen comedy movie Baja along Mark Margolis, Kurt Fuller and Jake Thomas. Perez has appeared in funny sketches alongside Channing Tatum and Guillermo Diaz on Jimmy Kimmel Live and as a teenager in primetime shows like The District and ER. Part one of the Netflix series loosely told the real-life story of the first twenty years of Selena Quintanilla's life, highlighting her rise to fame as a bonafide singing sensation. The part one finale concluded in the year 1990, with an introduction of the evil Yolanda Saldivar (Natasha Perez). Part one stopped short of when Selena truly found her voice, before it was tragically silenced in 1995.The part two trailer poses the question to Selena: "When you're gone, how do you want to be remembered?" It's a sad question in hindsight, but the trailer also highlights some of Selena's career triumphs, like her iconic "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom" performance. Check out the full Netflix trailer below:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMhS0UfY_o4The trailer looks exciting and highlights some of the struggles Selena had to go through in her personal life and career as a recording artist. Part one of Selena: The Series was criticized for not focusing on Selena herself enough. Hopefully part two will remedy that by keeping the spotlight on the star herself. That way fans old and new can appreciate and respect the legacy that the legendary Queen of Tejano Music left behind after her tragic murder at the age of 23 at the hands of her former fan club president, Yolanda Saldivar.Selena Quintanilla's life was cut short way too soon, but the legacy she left behind continues to remain strong to this day. Hopefully part two of Selena: The Series will pay proper tribute to the woman who blazed a powerful light during her life. As Selena says in the trailer, "I just want to be remembered as someone who gave it her all." Part two premieres on Netflix on May 4th.

Today we are speaking to Morgan Margolis, CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment and the son of actor Mark Margolis and Jacqueline Margolis. Likely you will know Mark Margolis from his breakout role Salamanca from the television show Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul as well as HBO’s Oz as well as the iconic films Scarface, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream and Black Swan. Host Josh met Morgan six years ago when their children were in elementary school together. They both work in the music industry and realized they both had celebrity parents. Morgan and Josh also bonded over New York in the 1970s. While Josh grew up in Los Angeles, he spent my summers in Long Island not far from where his family roots were and while not a city kid, they had shared experiences from Long Island to Manhattan growing up when the Yankees won back to back World Series and the Summer of Sam. As you will hear, one of the unique things about the Margolis family is that they were an acting family. Both Morgan’s parents were theater trained but unlike most celebrity stories, success came to Mark later in life. Always a working actor, Mark Margolis at age 80 is now recognized on the street by paparazzi while 10 years ago, he was just a regular working actor. In a minute you’ll hear Morgan’s personal story about growing up on the Lower East Side, his own acting career challenges following in his fathers footsteps, the infamous crew he ran with in high school, how football played a role in his life and how his early years watching his parents perform experimental productions on college campuses, travelling from stage to stage in a VW van as a toddler. Today's Guest: Mark Margolis, actor, "Breaking Bad," "Better Call Saul," "Timeless" Mr. Media is recorded live before a studio audience of mouth breathers, ear wagglers, toe tappers and other social malcontents who envy Mark Margolis and his cheek twitches and ding-dong… in the NEW new media capital of the world… St. Petersburg, Florida! Mark Margolis, left, Giancarlo Esposito, in AMC's "Breaking Bad" There are at least three elements to an award winning acting performance: 1) It starts with the source material. Is the writing sharp, evocative, and provocative? 2) Does the actor understand the words on the page and can he extend their value from words to performance? 3) And finally, is the audience emotionally moved by the actor? MARK MARGOLIS audio excerpt: "In Scarface, Al Pacino said if we put all our faces together we might be able to make one handsome guy!"  Order Breaking Bad: The Complete Fourth Season on DVD from Amazon.com by clicking on the DVD cover above! If you’ve been watching the AMC drama “Breaking Bad” over the years, you’ve had the privilege of seeing some extraordinary performances by the lead actors, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn. But some of the greatest moments have been of the smaller, more isolated type. Like the ones featuring my guest today, Mark Margolis, who plays – or should I say played -- Hector "Tio" Salamanca. You remember Hector, the notorious, bloodthirsty bastard we met as an old man and later in flashbacks as a young badass. As Hector, Margolis never says a word, communicating extraordinary viciousness and anger with nothing more than a glare and the pounding of a little bell. Margolis was so terrifying as a bellringer that he’s been nominated for 2012 Emmy Award as “Best Guest Actor.” Hopefully, he doesn’t have that damn bell with him now.
