Roberto Vally's accomplishments within music date back to his formidable years in New York where he was awarded his Junior High School's Music Honor Award. It was clear that Roberto was destined to pursue an education in music. From 1974-1978 he attended New York City's legendary High School of Music and Art-depicted in Fame (1980 film). Continuing his education in music theory and classical bass he attended the highly acclaimed Julliard School from 1976-1978. There, most notably, he was mentored by the prominent professor and classical bassist, Homer Mensch. Roberto loved every minute of his bass education, but the “itch” to perform and take his bass skills on the road eventually took hold of him. In 1979 he auditioned for a show band that toured in the US and Canada, and off he went! His ferocious playing and charismatic stage presence were extraordinary. There was no stopping him. His skills and thirst for fun and adventure brought him overseas to France, where he not only gigged, but mastered surfing and skiing. Perhaps unbeknownst to him at the time, in the midst of his playing on stage, on slopes and on surf boards, Roberto was building a remarkable set of diverse “chops” that come only with countless live stage experiences. Years of honing live performance skills really paid off when he auditioned with Spyro Gyra. Thru 1987 and 1988 Roberto toured and recorded with Spyro Gyra, performing in over 150 concerts in the US and around the world. With Spyro Gyra he recorded “Stories Without Words”, which is to date, one of the group's most popular albums. Touring continued for Roberto in 1990 when he joined Michael Franks on his Blue Pacific Tour-once again taking him on tour worldwide.Westward bound. While Roberto was on tour with Michael Franks he took a leap of faith and invited Bobby Caldwell to one of the California shows with Michael, and as fate would have it, Bobby showed up and immediately asked Roberto to join his band. So in 1991, he moved to Los Angeles and started rehearsing with Bobby, To date, Roberto is playing with Bobby for an astonishing 29 year tenure! In 1993 he took stage with Randy Crawford as her bassist, but his adept demeanor and impressive musicality led Randy to appoint him as Musical Director where he headed tours encompassing the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia for over 15+ years.Since moving to Los Angeles, Roberto has performed and/or recorded with the following artists: George Benson, Christopher Cross, Jeffrey Osborne, Bob James, Al Jareau, Hillary Duff, Diane Schuur, David Benoit, Boz Scaggs, Kirk Whalum, Bobby Caldwell, Patti Austin, Arturo Sandoval, Larry Carlton, Marion Meadows, Jeff Golub, Peter White, Norman Brown, Paul Brown, Boney James, Ric Braun, Michael Lington, Richard Elliot, Joan Sebastian, Johnny Rivers, Euge Groove, Eric Darius, Anna Barbara, Alvaro Torres, Los Trio, Ricardo Arjona, Nils, Banda Blanca and more.-Get FeaturedLemur MusicSMILE - Ryan Roberts Street-Artsemble Instagram / Twitter / Youtube / Website / BSA/ View More Episodes

RIP Bobby Caldwell we love you man!About today's guest: A BRIEF HISTORY…With his formative years spent in New York City, Roberto's musical talents were highly enriched through in-depth exposure to vast musical styles. Classical, Jazz, Latin, Funk, Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, and Soul music became an integral part of his musical palette. Years of traveling and performing with notable artists around the world have made Roberto's already broad repertoire one of outstanding magnitude. The combination of his innate groove, musicality, dexterity, and worldwide playing experiences make Roberto a world-class bass virtuoso, and as many will attest, with a heart as big as his 200 year old standup bass!Years of honing live performance skills really paid off when he auditioned with Spyro Gyra. Thru 1987 and 1988 Roberto toured and recorded with Spyro Gyra, performing in over 150 concerts in the US and around the world. With Spyro Gyra he recorded “Stories Without Words”, which is to date, one of the group's most popular albums. Los Angeles-based saxophonist and composer Richard Elliot is widely considered one of the architects of urban contemporary jazz. When 16 Georgia Republicans met at the state Capitol on Dec. 14, 2020, they cast Electoral College votes for Donald Trump, who had not won the state's presidential election. The 16th episode of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Breakdown podcast – “The Trump Grand Jury” — revisits what happened that day and the consequences going forward. The false electors cast their votes the same day 16 Democrats, the official Electoral College electors, publicly cast votes for the man who'd been certified as the victor: President Joe Biden. Fulton County prosecutors heading the special purpose grand jury investigation of former president Trump and his allies have notified the 16 fake electors that they are targets of the probe. This means they could be criminally charged for what they did. In the episode “The Fake Electors,” Breakdown hears from three reporters — the AJC's Greg Bluestein, Channel 2 Action News' Richard Elliot and independent journalist George Chidi — who stumbled across the GOP meeting where the GOP “electors” cast votes that were later sent to Congress and the National Archives. The podcast also interviews legal experts who are closely following the case and who give their takes on what occurred. Among those members of the phony slate of Republican electors trying to overturn Biden's victory was state Sen. Burt Jones, the GOP nominee for lieutenant governor. This summer, Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney handed Jones a victory by disqualifying the Fulton DA's office from further investigating him because District Attorney Fani Willis hosted a fundraiser for Jones' opponent, Democrat Charlie Bailey. But Jones is not in the clear yet. The Prosecuting Attorneys Council of Georgia now has jurisdiction and could appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Jones. This means Jones, who is leading in the polls in the race for lieutenant governor, could face a possible indictment. This week is the Season 1 finale. My guest is Tom Politzer. Tom is the lead tenor saxophone player for the funkiest band around TOWER OF POWER. Their website is https://towerofpower.com/ Tower just celebrated 50 years as a band and just released an incredible live album 50 Years of Funk & Soul: Live at the Fox Theater This album captures Tower of Power's storied career with two no-holds-barred victory lap concerts in Oakland, CA on June 1 & 2, 2018, performing their full spectrum of life-affirming funk and soul hits. This historic concert includes special guests Chester Thompson, Lenny Pickett, Francis ‘Rocco' Prestia, Bruce Conte and Ray Greene. Tom was born in Detroit, Michigan the home of Motown and was raise in Palo Alto, Calif. His parents were opera lovers, so he grew up with a strong background in classical music. He took up the clarinet when he was ten and became very proficient playing in the school bands and with local youth orchestras. Half-way through his junior year in high school, the Jazz Band needed someone to fill the baritone sax chair. He was skeptical, but playing Maynard Ferguson, Buddy Rich and especially “Squib Cakes” by Tower of Power convinced him. Had he not made the switch; he probably would have not become the professional musician he is today. Tom has been a member to Tower of Power for 20 years now. He is part of a fraternity of amazing lead tenor players. Lenny Pickett, Marc Russo, Richard Elliot, Brandon Fields, and Davin Mann to name a few. The lead tenor chair in Tower is one of prestige and honor and Tom has filled that chair with his amazing sound and the hippest licks on every song. The leader of Tower of Power Emilio Castillo, was instantly impressed with Tom and his professionalism and if you watch their shows, he glows with pride every time Tom plays a solo. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/yoel-hyman/support
In this episode, we have a conversation with Charmin Greene! Reigning from Houston, TX, Charmin is an American Jazz Saxophonist who is recognized as an important and influential jazz musician. At the age of 12, she further honed her musical skills and developed her passion under the tutelage of the late Richard Thomas of The Sesame Street Jazz Band, as well as being influenced by greats such as, Kirk Whalum and Joshua Redman. Charmin's sound was destined to pull on the souls of people. Expanding her palette of world music colors considerably, she draws on years of experience of working with the artist in the genres of Pop, R&B, Gospel and of course Jazz. She's since shared the stage and opened for notable musicians such as Norman Brown and Richard Elliot, as well as vocalists Pam Hart, Ali Woodson of the Temptations, Carl Thomas, Howard Hewitt, LeToya Luckett, Tank, and Brandy. Over the years, Greene has performed for audiences into Nicaragua, South Africa, Costa Rica and the Virgin Islands.
Grammy nominee Richard Elliot had his musical breakout when he joined Tower of Power in the mid-1980's. Throughout the years he's been at the forefront of the contemporary jazz scene. Richard's released over 20 albums during his career, including a handful that hit #1 on the charts! In our March of 2015 interview, multi-award winning program director Ray White sat down with Richard backstage to talk about the major influence that Tower of Power had on his career, insights into his Lip Service release, and giving back through his work at charity events. Richard's brand new album is titled Authentic Life, and is climbing the jazz charts. In our showcase segment, Lisa Davis features 13-time Grammy nominated R&B and jazz recording artist Ledisi, who also landed several acting roles. Her latest CD is The Wild Card. Smooth jazz and R&B at its best, right here on the Coool CAT!
