Welcome to Season 3 of The J Curve, a podcast about entrepreneurship in Latin America. My guest today is Dave Nangle, founder and CEO of VEF, an emerging markets-focused, growth-stage fintech investment firm. VEF's Latam portfolio includes the likes of Creditas, Solfacil, Gringo and Konfio. We talked about Dave's investment strategy, focusing on growth-stage companies that have nailed unit economics and product-market fit. We discussed the most common mistakes founders make when pitching to VEF, what makes Brazil one of the most attractive markets in the world from a venture capital perspective, why trying to predict exit timing in emerging markets is often a losing game, and why Dave prefers M&A over IPO as the go-to exit strategy. Dave also shared his perspective on the most underrated tech company in Latin America. In today's episode we discuss: 1. VEF's investment strategy playbook: single country, single product focus and big scale up market 2. Build for exit: how to make M&A a viable exit strategy in VC and why an IPO might be less attractive than you think? 3. The holy grail of private markets: the pros and cons of a permanent capital vehicle structure in venture capital 4. Emerging markets are not all the same: what makes some particularly attractive for venture capital investors? 5. Brazil deconstructed: key factors making it a top tech investment market If you would like to get more insight from LatAm's leading tech founders and investors, subscribe to our new YouTube channel and follow us on Spotify or Apple. Higher yields change the game for asset allocators around the world, with pensions in particular now able to better match liabilities to assets. In the UK specifically, 20 years of previously persistent trends in asset allocations now require a reassessment. And this week's general election carries with it a potential expansion of the investor's opportunity set. To unpack what can be a very opaque and complicated investing landscape, this week's guest, Toby Nangle, an independent analyst and contributing editor at the Financial Times, could not be better placed. We talk through how past market movements and ongoing political realities shape the outlook for UK assets and the pound.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

LAST CHANCE to join my Thanksgiving Boundary Bootcamp! Give us an hour, and we'll give you the tools to take back your holiday and enjoy the Thanksgiving you deserve. CLICK HERE TO JOIN the November 15th 8:30 AM EST CLICK HERE TO JOIN the November 15th 12:30 PM EST Hey, Podsters! We are back, and we are all about boundaries this week! Right in time for Thanksgiving... I am beyond thrilled to welcome back the amazing Barb Nangle; Boundary Boss, for today's episode and buckle up, Podsters because we are diving head first into ALL THINGS BOUNDARIES. Such as: Why boundaries are so important any time, and specifically during the holiday season. As you know, boundaries have been a game-changer for me, and when Barb was here last time – I could not keep up with your incredible feedback. So, I invited her back, and together we are hosting a Boundary Bootcamp next week. That's right – if you find yourself wanting more after listening today, or if you already KNOW you want more – we are setting you up to replace that holiday fear with holiday cheer. Why are we doing this? Well, setting boundaries, especially during the holidays, can be challenging. Today we unpack why people find it so hard to establish limits. Guilt, shame, family expectations—these are the ongoing boundary struggles. And, bonus! We share our own personal experiences when establishing boundaries, including Barb's huge realization during her 12-step recovery journey. She discovered that setting boundaries isn't about controlling others, as changing someone else is beyond your control. Boundaries are about establishing how YOU will live. What YOU will accept and how you will communicate what is and is not ok. That responsibility lies with you. Did you know it's okay to completely opt out of family gatherings? And, you can set a time limit on how willing you are to participate in the gathering. Here's the thing: YOU get to decide what is best for you. In this episode we have a brief role play where I get to challenge Barb as our most difficult relative might also do…and she handles it like a BOSS. Amazing. Am I right? The holidays are a time when many of us feel obligated to let go of our own boundaries for fear of what other people will think and feel. If this sounds like you – here's one thing you can do to make this easier. Be quick and be kind with your boundaries; be polite, and offer alternatives when “NO” is not an option. The key thing we want you to remember here is to focus on yourself. It's okay to seek approval and let's also ensure you are approving of how you live YOUR life first. Boundaries are about self-love, not controlling others. So, if you're navigating the holiday chaos, join us on November 15th for the Boundary Bootcamp. It's time to reclaim your holidays, Podsters! ProjectME with Tiffany Carter – Entrepreneurship & Millionaire Mindset
Advice that made me $2 million dollars… First, you need to hear some of the back stories… there is no psychologist or highly successful businessperson in the world that would have said that “Tiffany has the perfect emotional makeup and skill set to build and run multiple multi-million dollar businesses.” I'm risk-averse. My number one priority is always to feel safe and secure as a result of my highly traumatic childhood. I'm an empath, introvert, and intuitive, who is highly sensitive and I can take EVERYTHING to heart. And you will love this one, I'm pretty lazy. I'm not some Type A personality, who gets off on being competitive. You get the picture here… When my first business wasn't budging at all, and here I was working 12-hour days, over-delivering to my 2 clients, and desperately trying to figure out how to stop trading my time for money….. I called my Lebanese Law of Attraction Coach in a full-blown entrepreneur meltdown. In his calming beautiful accent, he said, “Tiffany how we operate in one area of our lives is how we operate in all areas of our lives.” (This took me at least 10 minutes to process.) So we started to examine how I operate in my intimate relationships, friendships, money, my personal goals, at the gym, with pleasure….THERE WAS A UNDENIABLE TOXIC THREAD. The great news is once we identify the problem, we can get to work on the solution. I'll be walking you through this exercise, along with my podcast guest Barb Nagle today. UK financial assets just experienced once-in-a-generation type moves in the wake of the government's mini-budget announcement. Not only did both gilts and the pound sell off dramatically, they rebounded just as dramatically after intervention from the Bank of England. What does it all mean? And how did pension accounting contribute to the massive volatility? On this episode of the Odd Lots podcast, we spoke with Toby Nangle, an economics and markets commentator, who spent several years running asset allocation at Columbia Threadneedle. He explains why we saw such a dramatic move and what the whole thing taught us about market structure.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Deeply and profoundly. I was spiritual before I got into recovery, but my spirituality has been elevated immensely as a result of recovery. I USE God now in ways I never did before. My spirituality is the bedrock of my life. I make 'conscious contact' multiple times every day, some of it planned but much of it spontaneous. Life is SO MUCH EASIER when I'm connected (in recovery we say, "we're protected when we're connected" which means to other people as well as to God)

Barb Nangle started her podcasting journey around a desire to read for audio books, only to change lives and build up over 150 episodes on lessons she's learned through her recovery journey. When it comes to her process and journey, Barb hasn't ever struggled with what to talk about, what to share, or when to show up because she's found a way that works for her. This week, episode 45 of Listeners to Leads is about leaning into your desires and showing up authentically passionate! In this episode of Listeners to Leads, Barb Nangle is sharing the importance of showing up genuinely you and actionable steps you can take right now to never run out of content ideas. Barb and I also chat about the following: How Barb went from not knowing if she could produce 100 episodes, to successfully producing over 150 episodes and no hesitation when it comes to finding content. Why Barb didn't have any trouble at all figuring out who her listeners are and how to talk to them, and how to better understand your own listenership for yourself. The one caveat to being authentic and how Barb and Alesia both suggest you show up authentically and genuinely passionate every week. What to do with that built up deep desire to do something different, as well as why you may be called to do that thing, no matter how out of your comfort zone or the norm it may be.If you can take away anything from this episode, I hope it's that you need to find a way to do podcasting your way, not anyone else's, and that it's totally possible to find “your way” with some experimentation.Be sure to tune in to all the episodes to receive tons of practical tips on turning your podcast listeners into leads and to hear even more about the points outlined above.Thank you for listening! In this episode, I spoke with Maria Nangle. As a creator of the documentary film, "Searching For Chinook", Maria has in many ways, 'been there' and 'done that'. What do I mean? Maybe it's her time at the Cove with a world renowned writer. Or, maybe it's her uncanny ability to just take the next step until it brings her to exactly where she wants to be. Have a listen, and decide for yourself! Follow @searchingforchinook on IG. Some of VEF's current and past portfolio companies include Creditas, Konfio, JUMO, and Tinkoff. In this fun episode, we discuss: - David's story and why he quit his London job and moved to Moscow in the early 2000s without speaking a word of Russian - Advantages of being a publicly listed firm with a permanent capital structure - The incredible investment opportunities within fintech in emerging markets - Why VEF actually invests harder and doubles down during volatile periods and how he even closed a deal in Turkey in the middle of an attempted coup with tanks on the streets - Investment lessons and why you should always invest along with local VCs - The exciting future of fintech in frontier markets like Pakistan, Egypt, and Nigeria… and a lot more! David Nangle David Nangle has spent his career focusing on emerging markets and within that the financial services sector. He was part of ING Baring's Emerging Markets Research team between 2000 and 2006, after which he spent nearly 10 years with Renaissance Capital in both Moscow and London, as head of financials and research overall. He helped the firm develop and grow their financials and broader research footprint from a strong Russia base to a leading EM and frontiers franchise. Having had a front row seat in the evolution of the financial sector across emerging markets since the late 90's, in 2015, he left the world of investment banking and co-founded VEF to back founders building the next generation of financial services firms across the emerging world. About VEF VEF is an investment company listed on Nasdaq First North Growth Market in Sweden under the ticker VEFAB. We invest in growth stage private fintech companies across the emerging world. We take minority stakes and are active investors with board representation in each of our portfolio holdings. We respect the macro, but are firm believers that the secular growth trend of EM fintech, outweighs all the macro uncertainty and volatility that we and our portfolio companies will invariably live through. A digital financial world is the end game and the best companies always come out of pockets of macro and market turbulence in a stronger relative position. This conversation with Patrick Nangle, CEO of Modo opened my eyes entirely to a lot of subjects. I had no idea that car share programs, companies like Modo, were indeed thinking about impact. That they were created to solve the problem of environmental impact AND the financial impact of vehicle ownership. We talk about car share programs and community impact. We talk about co-op models and how they differ from standard corporations or nonprofits. We talk about collaboration and an openness to realize you can’t solve anything on your own. It truly was a pleasure, and if you’re living in BC, I hope you have a chance to try out Modo’s car share program.

Transportation was a particularity cruel punishment. For centuries those condemned to this fate were shipped to penal colonies on the far side of the globe to serve out their sentences. It has become synonymous with injustice during the famine when many caught stealing food suffered this fate. For this podcast I dug deep into the archives and found the story of the Nangle family whose lives were ripped apart after they were caught stealing sheep. Their story also gives us an insight into life in Dublin prisons during the famine. The second part of the show is somewhat different focusing on the bizarre and perverse chapters in the entire famine - the arrival of the french celebrity chef Alexis Soyer to Dublin in 1847 to help famine victims. Plenty of people pay their kids an allowance to teach them the value of hard work and earning money. But our guest on this week’s Odd Lots podcast takes it to the next level. Toby Nangle is a fund manager at Columbia Threadneedle Investments, who also happens to be fascinated with the question of how money and banking really work. So rather than just give his kids a typical allowance, he uses their spending money to run monetary experiments. How do children react to higher rates on savings? How do they react to negative interest rates? What are the ramifications of his policies on his own internal household wealth inequality. In this episode, Nangle talks about what he and his kids have learned in the process.

Later in the hour, John Schaefer talks to David Bremner about his own compositions and playing the pipe organ at Christ Church Cathedral in Dublin. Dan was ordained a Priest of the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago in May of 1999. A northwest side native, he has served as Associate Pastor of St. William Parish (in 025), then as Pastor of Nativity of Our Lord Parish in Bridgeport (in 009), before replacing Fr.
