More than 12 million people have illegally crossed the border into the U.S. since 2021, data obtained and analyzed by The Center Square show. That includes the more than 241,000 apprehensions of illegal border crossers in May. The total number who've illegally entered the U.S. nationwide in fiscal 2024 through May is more than 2.2 million, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection data. The majority of illegal border crossers are overwhelmingly single adults. In fiscal 2024 through May, they totaled over 1.35 million.
New documents reveal that asylum claimants who are crossing illegally into Canada are cashing in on hefty daily stipends at the expense of taxpayers. Plus, proposed changes to Ontario's Highway Traffic Act will see repeat auto thieves having their licences revoked for life, in an attempt to quash the auto theft crisis. Veteran political analyst and Associate Director of The Washington Center Marc Sandalow joined us for a rich and wide ranging conversation about the political landscape -- starting with the ongoing trial of Donald Trump and proceeding to questions about who will and will not turn out to vote in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Marc spoke of his UC Berkeley student's dissatisfaction with both President Biden and former President Trump and citizen perceptions of aging in the two as well as the liability to President Biden of Vice President Kamala Harris being his likely running mate. We also discussed the third party candidacy of Robert F Kennedy Jr and the historic role of third party candidates and touched on the electoral college, the Black vote and the efficacy of polls. The dialogue then pivoted to immigration with Marc expressing the view of illegal/undocumented immigrants being demonized and scapegoated for political purposes as responsible for high incidences of murder, rape and other violent crimes. Terrorists may be entering the U.S. illegally, Marc conceded, but for the present, he declared, more Americans are killed by cows. More illegal/undocumented immigrants, he pointed out, are coming into the U.S. and more fentanyl also is, but crime is continuing to go down and illegals/undocumenteds generally do not illegally vote. Marc spoke of how playing up the fearsome dangers of big cities also plays well politically. He discussed presidential immunity, bipartisanship, today's social media, journalism, rank choice voting, national security and the Chinese and their ownership of TikTok. At least 1.2 million people have been apprehended or reported evading capture at the southern border in the first five months of this year, according to data obtained and analyzed by The Center Square. The estimate is based on official apprehension data reported by U.S. Customs and Border Protection as well as gotaway data. A Border Patrol agent provides this data exclusively to The Center Square on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisal. Gotaways are those who illegally enter the U.S. and intentionally seek to evade capture. Border Patrol agents report those who have illegally entered and evaded capture based on several factors. In 2003, Institute co-founders Lois Holzman and the late Fred Newman had a paper published with the title “All Power to the Developing.” This phrase captures how vital it is for all people—no matter their age, circumstance, status, race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation—to grow, develop and transform emotionally, socially and intellectually if we are to have a shot at creating something positive out of the intense crises we're all experiencing. On 8 March 2019, The Nasiona‘s co-Founder, Julián Esteban Torres López, was the keynote speaker at “Cruzando Fronteras”—an event on immigration and border crossing, hosted by Central Americans for Empowerment (CAFÉ) at California State University, Chico. Julián's speech tackled the role of storytelling as a tool of empowerment that can disrupt the status quo, confront caricatures, change politics by first changing culture, and help shape new paradigms. "Cruzando Fronteras" was an event that hoped to provide a safe space to talk about the seeking of refuge and the many harsh trials and tribulations that our families have gone through, in order to inform others and each other on why anyone would want to take on the treacherous task of crossing (multiple) borders. CAFÉ wanted to provide these perspectives in an effort to better understand different experiences of struggle. Because more than that, it's about one being able to persevere, about crossing that border, that boundary, in your own limitations and overcoming what has personally kept you back. On this episode, we showcase the following four poets out of dozens who took the stage during the “Cruzando Fronteras” event to share their personal stories: Alondra Adame, Eva Gonzalez, Gustavo Martir, and Diana Castellanos. Then, Julián shares his keynote speech, entitled, "To the Border Crossers: It's Time to Start Biting Their Tongues Instead of Ours."
