Most people wait for a crisis to start living with intention. This episode is your invitation to stop waiting. After attending a funeral for someone who lived with “no wasted days,” Leslie Randolph reflects on how easily moms can slip into autopilot – checking boxes, managing schedules, and losing sight of their own joy. She shares how the loss of her father during the height of COVID became a turning point, waking her up to the difference between managing life and actually living it. This episode is a call to trade burnout and disconnection for intentional living. Leslie walks listeners through the first, often overlooked step: self-awareness. She offers strategies to help moms get honest about how they're feeling, notice what they need, and take small but powerful actions toward a more fulfilling life. From setting boundaries to rediscovering joy in the everyday, Leslie offers a roadmap for moms who are ready to stop going through the motions and start showing up on purpose for themselves and the people they love. Originally uploaded October 29th, re-edited Nov. 26th. Chris Holman welcomes Tom Kelly, President & CEO, Automation Alley, Troy, MI. Chris had several things he wanted to catch up on with Tom: Q. Before we get started, can you remind our listeners what Project DIAMOnD is? Project DIAMOnD –which stands for distributed, independent, agile manufacturing on demand – is an initiative powered by Automation Alley and funded by Oakland County, Michigan. Project DIAMOnD was developed in October 2020 to accelerate digital transformation among Michigan manufacturers. In Phase I of the program, which was funded by $10 million from Oakland County and $2 million from Macomb County, Automation Alley distributed 300 3D printers to small- and mid-size manufacturers at no cost, provided workforce training, and networked the printers to be used to fulfill emergency orders at scale. In 2021, the network concept was validated, as it printed and shipped 8,000 tourniquet parts to fulfill a request from the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The parts allowed for the assembling of more than 2,600 tourniquets to help those in need of medical assistance during the Russian assault on Ukraine. Q: Project DIAMOnD recently opened a Digital Transformation Center in Auburn Hills. Can you tell us more about this? Of course! It provides companies access to industrial 3D printing equipment, training and support. The new Digital Transformation Center (DTC) is supported by Geofabrica, an Auburn Hills, Michigan business that specializes in the development of custom 3D printing systems and processes for industrial applications. Through the DTC, Project DIAMOnD companies will have access to additive manufacturing courses, a team of experts, and access to additional 3D printers to test and make products. Q: Wow, so this center is really helping to transform the region and state into a magnet for advanced manufacturing and training. What can companies learn at this center? At the Digital Transformation Center, Project DIAMOnD participants will learn how to transform their businesses from a capital and process-based mindset to a design and intellectual property mindset facilitated by 3D printing. This encompasses having an opportunity to launch and validate products before investing in industrial additive manufacturing equipment. They will also retain access to 3D print and post-process products, without the burden of owning and operating complex equipment. Q: What else does the DTC provide? Beyond 3D printing equipment, the DTC will provide access to industrial 3D scanners and advanced modeling and measurement software. Companies will also be able to upload and order parts through the DTC. Q: What companies are eligible to use the center? How can companies get involved in Project DIAMOnD? At this time, Project DIAMOnD is open exclusively to small- and medium-sized companies located in Oakland County. However, if you're outside Oakland County, don't hesitate to apply! We've touched on the theory of self-determination on the show before, but today, I'm thrilled to dedicate an entire episode to this important topic. Joining me for this deeper dive is Dr. Gina Riley, an expert in self-determination theory and motivation. This conversation will resonate with so many of you because it beautifully ties into themes we often explore here, like low-demand parenting and fostering our kids' natural passions and strengths. In this episode, Gina explains the theory of self-determination and dives into the science behind why it's so impactful, particularly for neurodivergent kids. We explore how it connects with autonomy-supportive parenting and discuss the three tenets of cognitive evaluation theory, which examines what fosters intrinsic motivation. We also tackle the hot topic of whether extrinsic motivators like stickers and rewards have a place and how to genuinely connect with our kids' interests—even when they differ from our own. About Dr. Gina Riley Gina Riley, Ph.D., is an educational psychologist, Program Director, and Clinical Professor of Adolescent Special Education at CUNY – Hunter College. She has conducted significant research on homeschooling and unschooling, an educational method and philosophy that advocates student intrinsic motivation as a primary means for learning. In addition to her research on self-directed learning environments, Dr. Riley has expertise in Supported Decision Making, an alternative to guardianship for students with disabilities. She is a faculty advisor for Supported Decision Making New York, promoting autonomy and self-determination for individuals with disabilities. Dr.Riley also has extensive experience in online, hybrid, and HyFlex education, having been actively involved in the field since 1998. Her contributions to educational psychology and alternative education models have been influential in shaping contemporary discussions on personalized and flexible learning approaches. Dr. Riley is the author of numerous academic articles and three books, including Unschooling:Exploring Learning Beyond the Classroom (Palgrave, 2020), The Homeschooling Starter Guide (Simon & Schuster, 2021), and The Joys of Self Determined Learning: A Collection of Essays (Ricci Publishing, 2022). She is the current President-Elect of the New York State Association of Teacher Educators. Things you'll learn from this episode What self-determination theory is, and how it's connected to intrinsic motivation Why a sense of competence, autonomy, and relatedness, as outlined in the cognitive evaluation theory, are crucial for motivation Why it matters that parents focus on facilitating autonomy and decision-making in their children What the science says about how and why intrinsic motivation leads to better academic and social outcomes in adulthood How intrinsic and extrinsic motivations can coexist and why it's important that they're balanced Resources mentioned Dr. Gina Riley's website Gina on Instagram Gina on Twitter Unschooling: Exploring Learning Beyond the Classroom by Dr. Gina Riley The Homeschooling Starter Guide: How to Create and Adapt the Best Education Action Plan for Your Needs by Dr. Gina Riley NYS Decision Making Curriculum (free decision making curriculum for schools and homeschools I Will Die on This Hill: Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World by Meghan Ashburn and Jules Edwards Meghan Ashburn and Jules Edwards on Autistic Adults, Autism Parents, and the Children Who Deserve a Better World (Tilt Parenting podcast) Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Dan Pink The intrinsic motivation of Richard Ryan and Edward Deci The Self-Driven Child, with William Stixrud and Ned Johnson (Tilt Parenting podcast) The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives by Dr. William Stixrud and Ned Johnson Learn more about your ad choices. Hey, it's Luci Dumas, and today's solo episode is a little different because I am sort of “journaling” about my experiences around the topic and looking for my own answers as I explore a topic that's been on my mind lately: motivation. Specifically, how we can find it, sustain it, and even question whether we always need it. Is it okay to just be sometimes? To live a simpler life without constantly striving for the next big thing? It's a big question, and one that I've been pondering deeply. As I thought about motivation, I kept coming back to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. You might remember it from a psychology class—it's that pyramid of five human needs. It got me wondering: can understanding these levels help us reignite our drive when it feels like the spark is fading? In this episode, I break down each level of Maslow's pyramid: • The basics like food and shelter. • Our need for safety and security. • The desire for connection and belonging. • Building self-esteem and feeling accomplished. • And finally, the quest for self-actualization—living our best, most fulfilling life.I'll share some thoughts on how these needs might be influencing your motivation—or lack of it. Plus, we'll tackle that ever-present voice saying, “I should be doing more,” and decide if it's always true. Spoiler: sometimes it's okay to give yourself grace. Some of the ideas on how to become or stay motivated I explore are suggestions to • Identify the Blockages: • Set Goals Aligned with Your Needs: • Reflect and Reassess: • Leverage Higher Levels for InspirationTune in for a mix of self-reflection, practical tips, and maybe even a spark to get you motivated—or at least, to help you feel okay with where you are right now.Be sure to check out www.lucidumascoaching.com and feel free to book a 20 minute chatConnect with Photography Business Coach Luci Dumas: Website Email: luci@lucidumas.comInstagram FacebookYouTube

Today's podcast episode is all about what we can do as teacher mama's when we feel like our future is uncertain and we feel a lack of control. Springtime brings (hopefully) a time when we find out our job assignments for the following school year. Most of us most likely hope we are staying in the same spot. But we also know that might not happen. I am in a season of uncertainty myself. I'm unsure what next school year will bring. And I am not a patient person. It is really hard for me to wait and see how things will turn out. It is also hard for me to just trust that everything will work out. BUT it is also really important to me that I am present and soaking up the remainder of the current school year. So I used a 3 step process to gain back my control and feel more at peace. This episode is for you if: Do you feel overwhelmed at the end of the school year? Do you feel like your future is out of your control? Are you thinking you might be switching grade levels, buildings, or positions over the summer? Do you want to manage and control this current situation so you can feel present and at peace? There's no doubt that our blood sugars affect our mood and cognitive function, and in this week's episode, I'm joined by Brea Di Dato, a family and psychiatric nurse practitioner in Oregon, for a conversation that is chalk full of wisdom. Our conversation includes her story of being diagnosed at age 38, her experience with neuropathy, anxiety, and more. She paints a vision of how our joy can coexist with suffering and that the goal of life is NOT an end to suffering. Brea also shares her expertise on the role between blood sugar, cognitive function, mood, and how to effectively communicate your “grumpy space” needs to your partner.Time Stamps: (04:56) Weight Loss and Brain Fog: Her Diagnosis at 38 Years Old (08:20) Her First 6 Months of Diagnosis(10:05) Neuropathy (12:05) How She Approaches Her Patients Now Post Diagnosis (13:04) The Slippery Slope of Single Data Points (14:53) Safety & Taking Control of Anxiety With a New Diagnosis (17:43) Barriers to Living (19:40) First Steps: Validate the Grief (20:48) The Coexistence of Joy and Suffering (22:42) A Dead Person Goal(23:45) Growth, Change, and Discomfort (26:22) Distress and Burnout (30:15) Reaching Out for Help (33:18) Diabetes, ADHD, Blood Sugar and Cognitive Function(35:49) Blood Sugar and Mood (38:41) Creative and Effective Communication of Your Needs(42:32) I Don't Need You to Fix ThisWhat to do now: For any person with Diabetes in Oregon who would like to talk to someone about their mental health, check out Brea's business website https://www.pbh.health/Follow me @lauren_bongiorno and @riselyhealth on Instagram to stay in the loop for when new episodes drop.Learn more about our coaching programs HERE. In episode 125 of the Outdoor Minimalist podcast, we return to the world of epic parenting. At least that's what I call it because outdoor parents are badass, and I have to say it. I've only had one other episode dedicated to bringing kids outside and on outdoor adventures, and actually, that came out just a few weeks ago: episode 121– how having a baby changed the way I play outside with Jocey Newman. This current episode can be seen as building on that topic and expanding into a bit more detail about not only how to get outside but also how to take care of yourself as a new mom in the outdoors and hone in on the items you actually need to pack for your kids along the way. I know I say new moms, but this episode is appropriate for any parent or anyone who knows a new parent or parent new to getting their kids into outdoor sports. To help me do this, I had to sit down and chat with a couple of moms who make every day an epic adventure with their kids: Karissa and Kailey Tuthill. Raised in the mountains of Colorado, sisters Karissa and Kailey found their playground in the wilderness, where every day held a new adventure. Fast forward to motherhood in the variable climates of Jackson, Wyoming, they faced a new challenge: finding sustainable, all-season clothing for their growing families. This led to the creation of Iksplor (phonetic spelling of 'explore'), a line of 100% merino wool adventure essentials for the whole family, and the first 100% merino wool nursing layer in the U.S. Through their brand and clothing line, Karissa and Kailey are honored to make getting outside with your kids easier every day of the year. Iksplor is more than clothing; it's a commitment to sustainable outdoor adventures. The Iksplor More program reflects this, allowing parents to sell back their kids' outgrown layers for cash or credit for the next size up, promoting a cycle of use that's all about the base (layer), not waste. Karissa and Kailey's commitment to the outdoors shines through in their personal lives, from backpacking excursions to celebrating each of their children's birthdays with an outdoor adventure instead of a Pinterest-perfect party. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Lesya Holzapfel. She is the CEO and Founder of BSB Tribe and Eat. Be Fit. Explore. She is also the host of the Fit Moms Squad Podcast. Her mission is to share keto holistically and help women feel more confident. As a teen, Lesya struggled to deal with her weight. This led her to choose being a dietitian as a major in college, but in the end, she was disappointed because she did not want to believe the things she was taught. After all the desperate attempts, she still couldn't lose weight no matter what she was doing. A friend of hers doing keto and having great results inspired her to try it. That's where keto comes into her life. After going back and forth on keto because of her pregnancies, she finally has resolved to integrate it into her lifestyle. She began doing clean keto, intermittent fasting and focusing on proteins. Her lifestyle change produced a great outcome, as she lost 60 pounds in just eight months. Her journey of losing weight is an inspiration for many women experiencing the same she had. In this episode, Lesya speaks about clean and dirty keto and the foods you need to avoid. The positive results you gain in strategically throwing carbs. Lesya reveals the truth about doing keto in longer terms. She talks about the benefits of intermittent fasting based on your needs. Tune in as we chat about the dirty vs clean keto, investing in your health, carb cycling, intermittent fasting, and ways to break your weight loss stall. / / E P I S O D E S P ON S O R S Biotiquest Sugar Shift product. [22:18] Investing in Health Will Be Your Best Asset: Start Now! - Health is not an expense. It's an investment. - Sadly, health is the last thing that many people invest in. - Organic food, grass, and all that are more expensive; however, you'll save money in the long run since you eat less. - Most food at restaurants is going to be served with inflammatory oils. - The most valuable thing you can invest in is your health. [25:14] How Can you Benefit from Intermittent Fasting Based on Your Needs? - Time-restricted eating and a three-hour bedtime window are recommended for fully healthy women. - Keep the meals between an eight to 10-hour window. - If it's someone with cortisol or adrenal issues, we must be careful with too much fasting. - We are all fasting. We just don't do it consciously. [28:15] Carb Cycling: Throw Your Carbs Strategically and Gain Positive Outcome - While keto is a good stress reliever in the short term, it is bad if you are already stressed out. - Carbs help decrease cortisol and increase serotonin. - Not all carbs are good. Complex carbs support our body. - You can travel and enjoy food, and it doesn't mean you have to eat all the crap all day. Just be strategic. - Having extra healthy carbs around workouts could be a great idea if you feel tired. [38:28] Does Long-Term Keto Work Really? Find Out the Reality of It - It's about bio-individuality and personalization - Some women are not dealing with all this chronic stress that other women are. - You can't know if a person is always doing carnivore 24/7. [41:58] What Are Some Ways to Break Weight Loss Stall? - Lesya does not let her clients tell her they've hit a stall unless they have for at least three weeks in a row and don't feel better. - She has a step-by-step formula that she teaches in her program. - Sleep is the most missed thing regarding weight loss stalls. - Look at the basic causes: food, stress, and sleep. - Eating normal macros daily, fasting for 24 hours, and then increasing carbs the next day works.
