Welcome to episode #950 of Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels of Separation - The ThinkersOne Podcast - Episode #950. My good friend, Stephen Shapiro, is not one to take the standard approach to anything. As the former leader of Accenture's business process reengineering practice, he realized that optimizing business efficiency was leading to layoffs - a direction he didn't want to pursue. So, instead of continuing on that path, Stephen pivoted. He built Accenture's 20,000-person innovation practice and refocused his efforts on growth and job creation. From there, Stephen became a full-time speaker and author, helping organizations from 3M to Nike rethink how they tackle innovation. In our latest conversation (he has been on the show multiple times), Stephen shares insights from his new book, Pivotal - Creating Stability In An Uncertain World. It's all about anchoring yourself in what shouldn't change, even as everything else spins around. He likens it to a basketball pivot - one foot stays planted while the other moves, creating both stability and flexibility. Stephen argues that, too often, businesses are caught chasing the next shiny thing, while what truly matters gets neglected. Instead of scattering resources, Stephen suggests that organizations focus on deepening their core strengths and identifying their differentiators. It's the planted foot - the foundation - that holds the key to long-term success. We also discuss the importance of creating a culture that supports slow, thoughtful innovation, rather than the kind of chaotic sprinting that leaves teams burned out. Companies like Apple are great examples, doubling down on services and ecosystems that reinforce their unique strengths. Stephen emphasized that the best innovation isn't always fast - it's about having the patience to focus on the right direction. He is also the author of many other books (here are two other that I love: Invisible Solutions, Best Practices Are Stupid) and his game, Personality Poker. Enjoy the conversation... Stephen Shapiro is a quintessential Free Timer. Throughout his 20+ year self-employment tenure, he has run a variety of experiments to optimize for freedom and joy. To name just a few: working one hour a day (for years!), clearing space for 15 weeks of travel and/or vacation each year, and week-long hotel stays for focused work sprints. We also talk about the “existential meltdown” that led to a business model redesign, and why he doesn't need or want to build a team right now, beyond an extended network of specialists, and why he'd rather sell 10 copies of his next book to the right readers (potential clients) than 10,000 copies to the masses. More About Stephen Shapiro: Stephen cultivates innovation by showing leaders and their teams how to approach, tackle and solve their business challenges. He sees what others can't: opportunities to improve innovation models and the cultures that support them. He is the author of six books, including Goal-Free Living, The Little Book of Big Innovation Ideas, Personality Poker, Best Practices are Stupid, and his latest, Invisible Solutions: 25 Lenses that Reframe and Help Solve Difficult Business Problems.
Stephen talks about all things innovation, how it ties into sales, innovating during the pandemic, and reinventing himself. He also talks about his mastering program, Personality Poker, and much more!
Stephen M. Shapiro started his innovation journey when he founded and led a 20,000 person process and innovation practice during his 15 year tenure at Accenture. Since leaving the consulting firm, he has authored six books on innovation, including Best Practices are Stupid. He also developed Personality Poker®, a powerful card game that helps create high-performing teams. He is a regular columnist for Inc.com. He has presented to audiences in 50 countries and in 2015, he was inducted into the Speaker Hall of Fame. In his spare time, he geeks out on magic. In this ‘Expert Interview' – Stephen shared with Phil and Inner Circle members how to innovate and find ways to be at the cutting edge of the hearing care industry by applying different lenses to the problems and opportunities we face. Highlights: “It's not about change for change's sake. It's not about novelty for novelty's sake.” “It really is about moving the organization in a way that keeps you relevant in the minds of your customers, your clients, consumers, so that at the end of the day you have a valuable proposition to the market.” “If we had more data, what would we do with that data to help us target people that are at risk that don't even know they're at risk yet?” “Even during recessions, those premium products, those premium services always excel. And in fact, we find that in some cases they do even better in tough economic times.” Visit Stephen's website: https://stephenshapiro.com Buy Stephen's book: https://www.amazon.com/Invisible-Solutions-Difficult-Business-Problems/dp/164543186X If you'd like to read the full highlights, check out this article on the Orange & Gray website: https://orange-gray.com/stephen-shapiros-advice-on-how-to-innovate-be-at-the-cutting-edge-of-the-hearing-care-industry/ Find out more about how “Inner Circle” members are transforming their hearing care practice with the help of the Orange & Gray team: https://orange-gray.com/inner-circle/

Stephen Shapiro is the author of the new book “Invisible Solutions: 25 Lenses that Reframe and Help Solve Difficult Business Problems”. For over 20 years, Stephen has presented his provocative strategies on innovation to audiences in 50 countries. During his 15 year tenure with the consulting firm, Accenture, he led a 20,000 person innovation practice. He is the author of six books, and the creator of “Personality Poker: The Playing Card Tool for Driving High-Performance Teamwork and Innovation”, a card game that has been used around the world to create high performing innovation teams. In 2015, he was inducted into the speaker Hall of Fame. In 2017, he was a regular judge and mentor on the TLC innovation reality television show, Girl Starter. Stephen started his career as an industrial engineer building computers and found the work to be routine. He realized early on that he was not a ‘cubicle guy’. He joined one of the world’s largest consulting firms, Accenture, by leveraging his engineering background to help companies develop more efficient processes and new products. When he discovered that companies were laying off thousands of people in the name of progress, he wanted no part of that. He took a leave of absence to reflect and returned to Accenture six months later with some fresh ideas to help companies grow. After 15 years with the firm, he decided to build his own brand, which includes authoring 6 books, speaking worldwide, online learning and innovation consulting. In this episode we discuss: How Stephen became disillusioned when he realized that his work as a consultant to help companies’ optimize their business processes enabled them to reduce their workforces. He likes to help his clients stay relevant by helping them create products, services, and business models that are relevant to companies, consumers, and their clients. Stephen shares how most of his business comes through credible referrals and clients who have worked with him. How he set the intention to write his first book and had it become real almost 5 years to the day after he set it. Stephen shares how he prefers to divot instead of pivot and by doing so, deepens the way he delivers his content. The value he places on meeting people where they are. Welcome to episode #589 of Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast. Here it is: Six Pixels Of Separation - The Mirum Podcast - Episode #589 - Host: Mitch Joel. Here's another individual that I have known for many years and - for some silly reason - has never been on this show. When I think about innovation and how to drive change for brands, I think about the work that Stephen Shapiro is doing. Stephen has spent decades showing business leaders and their teams how to approach, tackle and solve their business challenges. His core focus has always been showing brands opportunities to improve innovation models and the cultures that support them. The first innovation opportunity Stephen spotted was the opportunity to innovate within his own life. Halfway through his 15 year tenure at Accenture, while leading the company's business process reengineering practice, he realized he no longer wanted to be responsible for people losing their jobs. So he did exactly the opposite by building Accenture's thriving 20,000-person process and innovation practice, focused on growth and job creation. He then decided to become a noted bestselling author, thinker and consultant. He has published many great books including, 24/7 Innovation, Goal-Free Living, The Little Book of Big Innovation Ideas, Personality Poker and Best Practices Are Stupid. If that were not enough, He is also actively involved with Girl Starter. He is a judge and mentor on the television show (TLC), with the goal of encouraging and enabling your women to launch their own businesses. Enjoy the conversation... Running time: 50:56.
