And here I am, clinging to a capsizing dinghy with a single oar, just praying a tidal wave of new to dos doesn't come out of nowhere."Fun imagery, but spoiler alert, there is no yacht. Stephen Shapiro is a quintessential Free Timer. Throughout his 20+ year self-employment tenure, he has run a variety of experiments to optimize for freedom and joy. To name just a few: working one hour a day (for years!), clearing space for 15 weeks of travel and/or vacation each year, and week-long hotel stays for focused work sprints.  We also talk about the “existential meltdown” that led to a business model redesign, and why he doesn't need or want to build a team right now, beyond an extended network of specialists, and why he'd rather sell 10 copies of his next book to the right readers (potential clients) than 10,000 copies to the masses. More About Stephen Shapiro: Stephen cultivates innovation by showing leaders and their teams how to approach, tackle and solve their business challenges. He sees what others can't: opportunities to improve innovation models and the cultures that support them. He is the author of six books, including Goal-Free Living, The Little Book of Big Innovation Ideas, Personality Poker, Best Practices are Stupid, and his latest, Invisible Solutions: 25 Lenses that Reframe and Help Solve Difficult Business Problems.

126: Creating Time Buffer—7 Strategies for Spacious Scheduling

“If you're on time you're late.” That's one of my favorite mantras that I picked up from my dad, second to, “These are the grrrreat times!” (no matter what is going on in his life or the world).  My dad was always early for our meet-ups, something I experienced as a sign of respect and ease. This relationship to punctuality has stayed with me as an adult, and I'm not the only one. I once bumped into a first date who was killing time at the same west village park as me around the corner from the restaurant where we were set to meet fifteen minutes later, since we were both sticklers for showing up early! The bigger point—especially once you have time autonomy when running your own business—is recreating that early ease by building in spacious time buffers. This means you're not skidding in or out of calls or meetings feeling crunched for time, the heavy clamp of time scarcity pressing down, adding pressure and resulting in scattered, frantic energy.  Today I'm sharing seven of my strategies for building in time buffer. I'd love to hear yours, too! Send me an email at hi@itsfreetime.com or leave me a voice memo at http://itsfreetime.com/ask.

Everyone is in school around here and it is the best feeling. As I was sitting down to work this week and relishing in how much uninterrupted work time I had now that school is in, I was actually shocked at how little work I had to do. Like I only sat at my desk for two hours and that never happens. The last week I've just been doing my coaching sessions and the occasional shoot in the studio…and random house projects. So I was wondering where all my work went! And I started thinking back to last fall and what my back-to-work schedule was when school started last year. I had so much work piled on from that summer and I realized the reason why I had so much work then and so little work now is because I took a workcation this year. I actually take a workcation pretty often, like when I have to go speak somewhere or travel overnight for work. This time I was in Bear Lake, thinking I was going to be with my family, but they all got pulled into birthday parties so ended up just being me. And instead of canceling the trip, I decided to go to Bear Lake anyway and turn it into my little getaway. And I got so much done! I wrote 12 blogs, scheduled my social media for the next three months, caught up on emails and updated email marketing. And of course, took some time for me and binged some Netflix rom-coms. I just sat at my computer and got it all out. The secret to feeling caught up and ahead is a WORKCATION. They are a game changer, gets you ahead of work and helps you get caught up. Here's why you need a workcation in your life! If you are ready for a workcation and want to join me in Bear Lake for my January retreat, click the link below to get your spot. Have you heard of the rise of the “workcation?” I recently got to tag along with Joseph while he was traveling for work, and I was able to work productively during the day while we explored the city at night. In this episode, I'm sharing how it went and what I learned that I will apply to my next trips! Whether you work remotely for a company or for yourself, this episode is for you! 3 tips for planning your own workcation: Make a checklist of everything you will need to be able to work: notebooks, computers, any special tech, etc. I plan to invest in a personal hotspot in case there's no good wifi where I am. Set expectations with your clients and/or colleagues. You do not have to share the details of your trip, but let them know that communication is going to be different while you are away. Make a schedule of when you are going to work and when you are going to explore the place you are in. Having set objectives for your work time will help you be more productive and leave more space to have fun. They are from the department that runs the campaign to increase the population and tourists in Matsue City. What we talked about was how to make people stay in a small city like Matsue and how to convey the charm of Matsue City. The population of Matsue City is decreasing remarkably, the number of children is decreasing, and the number of elderly people is increasing. So we talked about remote work and workation. Remote work is also sometimes referred to as telecommuting. Workcation means to work remotely while traveling. Matsue City has a lot of nature and the cost of living is very low, so I thought that they could work remotely and live a very fulfilling life while earning a city salary. That's what we talked about. However, I thought that the fundamental problem was the Japanese way of thinking about employment. In Japan, finding a job is very important, and everyone thinks that they need to have a "stable job". As a result, there are very few people who study abroad, start their own businesses, or take on the challenges of start-ups, which are popular in the US and Europe. Most people think that working for a big company is the right thing to do, and often even a second job is forbidden. This example is especially common in rural areas like Shimane, where most students think that they have to become a civil servant or a banker. In fact, the laws and systems in Japan are very well designed to limit the risk of taking on the challenge of startups and entrepreneurship, even if you fail. So I felt that Japan is a country where it is really easy to take on challenges, but the problem is that there are not many people who think it is okay to take on challenges. Through this podcast and the activities of Nihongo Mura, I also thought about taking on more challenges. How is it in your country? -Questions of the day- -Phrases of the day- 1.人口が減っている/the population is decreasing 2.就職する/to find a job 3. 公務員/a civil servant 4.銀行員/a banker
