As an edu-transformer, if someone asked you point blank, what are the top 10 ways to re-imagine the schooling experience, what would you tell them? That's what I asked longtime experiential educator, innovator, school designer, podcaster and project-based learning practitioner Steve Shapiro. And because Steve believes in continually being counter-culture, he gave me 11. This episode unpacks those lessons. From obvious lessons around having a growth mindset, to less obvious lessons like making questions in the community, not grades the common motivator for learning. Steve contextualizes each lesson with stories from his career as a long time disruptor and edu-innovator. You will leave with new insights on how to do the same in your classroom or school! Last week, word got out that Patrick Rue, the founder of The Bruery in Orange County California, and more recently the founder and operator of Erosion Wines in Napa had acquired a 50 percent stake in Moonlight Brewery, a beloved northern California brewery founded 30 years ago by Brian Hunt. Moonlight is known for its beers like Death & Taxes and Reality Czech and had been half owned by Lagunitas via Heineken for the past six years. I first learned of the news via Beer by BART, a great site run by Gail Ann Williams and Steve Shapiro. If you're not already following them on social media, rectify that quickly. A subsequent press release release from the brewery noted that “Patrick will serve in an advisory capacity and will direct an oak barrel-aging beer program that enhances the integrity and heritage of Moonlight.” It continued by saying that under the Heineken co-ownership Moonlight "packaging shifted from exclusively draft to additionally offering beers in cans, and both production and distribution have grown all while keeping sales limited to Northern California. The new ownership strengthens Moonlight's dedication to remaining locally owned. This will allow for patient growth, greater availability of its coveted beers to its fans and wholesale partners, while maintaining the deliciousness and highest quality for which Moonlight is so well known.” Press release aside, in this episode we hear from the owners directly. Julie Kim is an L.A.-based college admissions counselor who helps young people gain entrance into America's most selective colleges. In this conversation Julie pulls back the curtain on the college admissions process and shows young people how they can not only get into selective colleges, but how they can be happier and more excited as they do it.Julie Kim is the founder of Julie Kim Consulting. She has helped her clients gain admissions to the nation's most competitive colleges, from Stanford to Yale, using her foundational strategy: the Passion Project. Julie developed the idea as a burned-out high school student and used it to gain admission to USC and later Harvard. In this conversation she turns the conventional wisdom about college admission on its head and shows how doing it the right way not only works, but also yields happiness and positive mental health. We cover a lot of territory including:1:50: Steve offers two important disclaimers (Here's the episode about achievement culture stress described in the disclaimer.)4:51: How social media around college admissions harms students' mental health7:13: The great misconception about being a “well-rounded student”9:42: How to identify your “passion” (interest + action)10:26: Julie's personal journey as a student12:05: Selling out your childhood for a fallacy12:39: An example of a student's passion project14:23: The story of a friend's son who didn't get into his top choice college16:07: How to figure out your passion (or how schools need to change)17:49 Why project-based learning is so powerful18:59: The enormous power of connecting with adults24:17: The view from a college admissions officer's seat27:07 How colleges look for intellectual curiosity. Hint: experience matters29:42: Julie and Steve reimagine what's possible in schools31:52: Julie's surprising advice to teenagers My favorite quote from this episode:“(When students work on a passion project) I think they feel refreshed that there's another way to navigate life as an adolescent… A lot of my students tell me…no one told me that this was possible for me. So I think they feel like this is refreshing, and a little hopeful as well .” (21:50) Julie Kim's website: https://juliekimconsulting.comAbout Experience MattersExperience Matters with Steve Shapiro invites guests to reflect on the most profound learning experiences of their youth and to consider how we can reform American schools. Each episode provides clues about how parents and educators alike can engage young people in powerful, sometimes transformational experiential learning. Do you want your business to stand out from the competition? According to Scott McKain, best-selling author and keynote speaker, the best way to attract and retain customers is to differentiate yourself from your competitors in a meaningful way. In today's episode, Scott sits down with host Mari-Liis Vaher to discuss what it means to create distinction in your marketing. Scott believes that marketing is all about making your business more attractive, so that your target customer chooses you over your competitors. Many business owners make the mistake of trying to be like everybody else in their field; however, what ultimately attracts customers are the things that make you unique. Scott explains that it is crucial to first cultivate your differences and then use them to your advantage in your marketing efforts. He discusses the four cornerstones of marketing and how to utilize them to grow your business. Tune into this week's episode of Powerful Marketing Tips to hear more about the four cornerstones of marketing. Listen to learn about the importance of standing out from the crowd and leaning into your differences. Quotes • “One of the worst things that we could do is to market performance that the people on the frontline can't execute. And all of that is part of the customer experience. So we all have to work together to create this extraordinary experience that gets customers repeating and referring.” (25:15-25:38) • “One of the most important qualities is resilience. The ability that after you've been knocked down by whether it's a challenge in your small business or a dwindling customer base because of a pandemic or whatever it might be. The ability and the resilience to take it to the limit one more time is a message that I still find inspiring even though it's an old song and that still continues to encourage me every time I hear it.” (31:15-31:40) • “The success of business is based on customer choice. The customer chooses us instead of the competition. So the way that we are chosen is because of our differences, not because of our similarities. But yet, most of us in business have not really thought of that, not really analyzed that. And I realize that because I have a small business and that was my biggest mistake, my biggest problem in the early days of my small business. I thought, 'If I want to be successful I have to be exactly like everybody else in my field,' which made me nothing more than at best average.” (4:53-5:34) • “I want to keep looking forward, not back. There's a reason the windshield is bigger than the rearview mirror in a car. You need to be looking forward, not back.” (9:59-10:07) • “Marketing to me is about how we become more attractive so that we get chosen.” (14:05-14:10) • “We always hear: 'think outside the box,' but what I've found in my research is that a lot of that is because we haven't really defined our box to begin with. We think we always have to think outside of it because we don't really know what it is. And if we always have to think outside of it, shouldn't we, as my friend Steve Shapiro says, shouldn't we get a better box?” (14:21-14:44) Links Connect with Scott McKain: • Website: www.scottmckain.com • LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/scottmckain/ • Twitter https://twitter.com/scottmckain • Instagram https://www.instagram.com/scottmckain/ The song that motivates Scott into action: • Eagles - Take it to the limit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJkW0Clsvrk) https://powerful-marketers.com/guest-application/ Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Episode 12: The Epiphany with Daniel PinkDaniel Pink's book A Whole New Mind makes the case for why experiential learning is necessary in the 21st century. His book Drive explains why it is also so much more motivating for young people. The epiphany that led Dan to these ideas may have occurred when, as a 14-year-old freshman, he wrote his first story for his high school newspaper, The Bexley Torch. In this interview Dan digs up long-buried memories and relives the moment that experiential learning produced what he describes as a physiological change in his brain. We cover a lot of territory including:3:37 Dan as a regrettably compliant student4:30 Performance goals vs. learning goals (or why Dan can't speak French)5:59 How performance goals harm mental health8:49 Dan's first Torch story assignment produces a major epiphany14:07 How extra-curricular experiences differ from traditional school learning15:11 The link between motivation and human nature17:51 How the world has changed yet schools stay largely the same19:37 The skills young people need to avoid having their future jobs outsourced22:12 Why traditional academic skills are still important, but they're no longer sufficient24:04 How Dan's children engaged in experiential learning outside of school26:21 What about kids without well-resourced parents?27:41 Can schools change when we're so deeply rooted in “bygone era” traditions?29:00 Dan's simple and practical suggestion to educators29:45 An outrageous visual picture of traditional education30:43 Standardization vs. extreme customization31:42 A passage from Drive that epitomizes the value of experiential learning My favorite quote from Drive:“We know that human beings are not merely smaller, slower, better-smelling horses galloping after that day's carrot. We know- if we've spent time with young children or remember ourselves at our best- that we're not destined to be passive or compliant; we're designed to be active and engaged. And we know that the richest experiences in our lives aren't when we're clamoring for validation from others, but when we're listening to our own voice- doing something that matters, doing it well, and doing it in the service of a cause larger than ourselves.” Daniel Pink's website: https://www.danpink.comA Whole New Mind: https://www.danpink.com/books/whole-new-mind/Drive: https://www.danpink.com/books/drive/Sign up for Daniel Pink's newsletter: https://www.danpink.com/subscribe/Steve Shapiro's website: https://www.steventshapiro.com About Experience MattersExperience Matters with Steve Shapiro invites guests to reflect on the most profound learning experiences of their youth and to consider how we can reform American schools. Steve Shapiro is a veteran educator of 32 years. He has taught sixth grade through graduate school, primarily as a high school teacher and school reformer. Our education system was built hundreds of years ago. To say the world has changed a lot since then is an understatement. More than just the adoption of computers in the classroom, there were no cars or even radios. And yet, very little about our educational structure has changed to prepare students for the world we are releasing them into. That's what school reform is all about. It can be a loaded term for many people. If you're a traditional teacher, the phrase “school reform” can even feel accusatory. We unbox what it actually means and explore why it has more to do with understanding the different ways that kids learn, the ways adults teach, and what the world needs from its education system. Neal Barnard, MD, FACC, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 90 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students. As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care. Working with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association, Dr. Barnard has authored key resolutions, now part of AMA policy, calling for a new focus on prevention and nutrition in federal policies and in medical practice. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia's Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health. Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee. In this conversation Dr. Barnard talks about his new book - Your Body in Balance - and shares the science behind how common hormone-related conditions—like infertility, weight gain, menopausal symptoms, breast and prostate cancers, thyroid problems, and acne—can be affected by and improved by simple diet changes. President Trump’s financial records and tax returns have been a recurring focal point since his election. Both the Manhattan District Attorney and various House Committees are asking to see these records in order to conduct their investigations into potentially unlawful behavior. But the president and his attorneys claim both that Congress is overstepping its power in requesting that information, and that the President of the United States should be immune to such subpoena requests. We now await decisions in two Supreme Court cases that could force President Trump’s hand and require his accounting firm and banks to turn over business records and financial disclosures. Joining us today on the podcast to help break down the importance of these two cases is Steve Shapiro, an ACLU legend and former legal director who came out of retirement to co-author an amicus brief for one of these cases.

As most of you know, I'm a true systems guy. But not many people think of creativity as something that can have a system. Most assume that it's something that “hits” you out of nowhere instead of something that you can plan out. However, there is a way to develop a process for creative problem-solving. Making creativity a systematic part of your life and business is invaluable. After all, what the world really needs is creativity leaders, not thought leaders. The people who truly change businesses and the world are disruptors- they create new dots that connect to the dots that already exist. Once you combine your analytical mind and your creative mind, you'll be able to see new ideas through to fruition. To dive deeper into the idea of creating systems for creativity, I've brought on founder and CEO of OpenGenius, Chris Griffiths. He has helped thousands of people worldwide drive business growth using highly practical innovation processes, including teams and individuals from Fortune 500 and FTSE 100 companies, the United Nations, Governments, the European Commission and Nobel Laureates. He is a pioneer in combining creative thinking strategies with technology to enhance productivity and is behind the iMindMap and DropTask apps, now utilized by over two million people worldwide. It's unlearned over time.” - Chris Griffiths Highlights - “Winners fail more than loser try.” The first mistake is viewing creativity as an event. Innovation is a process. Invest Alongside Boston's Top Angels in Our Syndicates: Our Investment Syndicates Page Building a business in education is hard but Steve Shapiro has beaten the odds several times. His latest accomplishment is as CEO of FineTune Learning which is set to grade essays from 3.6 million students taking the CollegeBoard's AP Exams starting in July of 2019. Founded by brilliant Maine educator Ogden Morse, FineTune Learning is a platform using software to facilitate human grading of essays at scale. An awesome interview with an outstanding and captivating entrepreneur. Highlights of the interview: Ogden Morse’s inspired approach made possible the use of software to evaluate answers by students to open response questions. The first product, Literature Companion, got local traction in Maine. However, selling district by district proved daunting. Steve Shapiro opted to go after large businesses that already had established relationships with schools. The danger to Steve’s strategy is that large players can string startups along and not do any business. Ogden, an AP teacher heavily involved in grading the exam, teed up this process for Steve by initiating the conversation with the CollegeBoard, which happened to be the ideal partner for FineTune. The challenge is aligning the standards of the tens of thousands of teachers who grade the AP Exam. CollegeBoard is a leader in developing technology for assessing critical thinking skills; FineTune’s approach was a natural fit. Phase I supports teachers in preparing student for the summative exam which will happen in May 2020. The platform will be used formatively throughout the year and will likely result in students being better prepared for the exam. Helping teachers assess the progress of individual students and of the class as a whole and to remedy weak spots. Phase II will be scoring the exam, a massive production. 5,000,000 exams are taken in early may and need to be graded by mid-June. Challenges: (1) how do we know the exams are being scored reliably and (2) how can the scoring be reported in a coherent way to the test takers. Sal was surprised that FineTune is also in the classroom helping teachers assess learning. FineTune also has a teacher development portal with short videos from master teachers on how they teach each particular topic. Its competency based and allows teachers to earn credit for professional accreditation. FineTune’s pedagogical approach will be used in all 36 AP Exams including the exam in calculus FineTune is collaborating with a small educational publisher to deploy its platform in support of teachers in the classroom outside the context of the AP Exam. Steve Shapiro is not big on the “individualized student journey”; like most educators he believes there’s more value in helping students learn in collaboration with their peers. Tech world is fascinated with individualized learning; educators are not. Rubrics are a set of expectations for student learning; FineTune has pioneered the digital rubrics to empower educators to be more effective at teaching. This also empowers students to understand what is expected. CFA Exam and the Bar Exam are on Steve’s prospect lists. Sal asks for your review of the podcast. The future of FineTune, AI enhancement of the human workflow in education. FineTune is integrating existing AI resources to automate the more mundane aspects of evaluation open responses to questions. Steve thinks the winner is this space will be taking a hybrid approach; using AI where it can help and having humans do the more subtle aspects of the assessment. Example: AI can now discern if there are supporting arguments for a position but will likely always struggle to understand the voice of the writer. Estimates indicate that FineTune’s platform can save teachers 40 to 50% of the time they spend correcting essays. This means teachers can assign more essays. It’s a force multiplier for teachers. Finding your calling: as a high schooler, Steve worked at a local delicatessen that made all its food from scratch and he was captivated by the idea of running a restaurant. One of his father’s students had gone on to the hotel school at Cornell. Steve and his dad went up to Cornell and visited and he loved the hotel school. In the early 1980s when Steve went to the Hotel School at Cornell, entrepreneurship was not yet cool, but there was a strong entrepreneurial spirit in the hotel program. In those days, people coming out of an Ivy League school looked for safe careers in large companies, startups were not an option for most graduates. A required summer internship exposed Steve to the risks of the restaurant business and dissuaded him from that career path as an owner. Working in the hospitality industry instilled in Steve the importance of pleasing your customer; it now informs his approach to product management. Working at a large bank as a credit analyst after business school convinced Steve that banking was not for him. While on a hiatus from graduate school at Harvard, Steve’s wife was working for a company that taught brought in foreign students to Boston. She convinced him he could start a similar business an be really good at it with his background in hospitality. This idea became American Learning, Steve’s most successful venture. Steve emphasizes that a lot of his success was due to lucky timing; he caught the start of a wave of foreign students wanting to come to the US to study. Good timing is everything in business. Focused on four-week stays and for students mostly from Japan. Had so much business they could almost not accommodate all the students who wanted to come. Being at the right place at the right time with the right skills led to a big success. Two-sided market: American kids teaching English to Japanese kids created an inter-cultural experience for local youth while serving foreign students. American Learning generated an unexpected benefit of wonderful good-will between Americans and Japanese people, frequently bypassing negative media stereotypes. Loads of positive unexpected benefits from intentional decisions that achieved their aim and got an additional unplanned bonus. Social impact imperative. Next business was tutoring for kids in poor neighborhoods. Provided parents with formation to help parents navigate the school system for the benefit of their kids. Third business was a workforce training. Helping blue-collar workers to transition to white-collar jobs. Cornell’s hotel wine courses and beer courses; highly popular electives! Steve’s best job ever was being a teaching assistant to a multi-hundred student wine course. Had to manage wine sampling and (boo-hoo) deal with the left-overs! Steve also learned computer programming, accounting and a bunch of other practical disciplines at the Hotel School. Steve is a big believer in bootstrapping your business and raising money only if you really must. He mentioned “The Millionaire Next Door” by Thomas J. Stanley as providing the surest way to wealth. Steve is a member of Launchpad Venture Group (a leading angel group in Boston) and Red Bear Angels (Cornell’s angel group). Involved in LearnLaunch, America’s premier ed-tech accelerator in Boston. Steve is also a fan of “Never Eat Alone” by Keith Ferrazzi, the best book on business networking. If you get in the habit of helping others amazing things come back to you. Steve’s advice to first-time founders: really bone up on the competitive landscape to understand what your unique advantage your business can offer customers. He sees a lot of pitches in which not enough attention is given to the competitive matrix. Watch the Bill Gross video on startup success. Be sure to go into entrepreneurship for the right reasons; job avoidance is not a good reason. Bootstrap as much as you can; it’s easier than ever to do that. Once you have real data on your business investors will be chasing you.
SF Beer Week is at the top of today's Brew Ha Ha agenda. Gail Williams and Steve Shapiro are in from San Francisco. They were writers for Celebrator Beer magazine and Gail is now working on PR for SF Beer Week. Sam Gilbert from Temescal Brewing in Oakland is also in and has brought beer from Temescal, a Pilsner and a single-hop Citra Ale. Mark remembers SF Beer Week used to do events at Anchor Brewery. The first was in 2009. SF Beer Week is happening all around the region now. The opening gala is Friday, February 1. Feb. 2 through 10 there are events all over the Bay Area. Temescal Brewing also has some events. They are in North Oakland in the Temescal neighborhood. They do a live canning tour called “Fresh Cans” where you can drink a beer just plucked off the canning line. Also they do a “Low and Slow” cookout in their patio space. They try to schedule SF Beer Week events near public transportation. "It goes through the 10th so it's a long week," says Gail. Sam says that Temescal makes beer for everyone, including anyone who lives in Oakland that they want to welcome into craft beer. It is in its third year, after he did He worked for a thing called Brewlab San Francisco, where he met other home brewers who shared their beer and feedback about them. When the SF Chronicle wrote about it, there followed months of chaos as the idea grew. Eventually Brewlab became a community of younger brewers with a homebrew shared space in the Mission district. Then they decided to throw the parties with 500 gallons instead of 5. His sweatshirt says, "Fresh beer, no jerks." That has become their official motto. They are tasting the Citra Ale from Temescal. Gail says it's the nicest example of a hazy IPA that she has had. It has a beautiful orangey finish, at 6.2% alcohol. It has passion fruit and guava flavor. Citra is an example of hops that were developed for their flavor. Some hops are patented strains. Citra was developed here and is grown primarily in the Pacific Northwest. Mark says they used to go to Yakima, Washington, every year to choose hops. California used to be a huge hop grower but today the Sonoma County production is close enough to the breweries so that they can be used fresh, within a day or two of harvest. There is a big calendar on the SF Beer Week website listing their numerous events. Sam Gilbert talks about his background, with San Francisco Brewlab. When he started the brewery it was getting expensive to stay in San Francisco and they found a place in Oakland which was affordable but where there was an opportunity to start a beer community. Steve Shapiro also talks about a site he started called BeerbyBART.com as a way to help people to organize beer adventures and use public transit.

Recognize who you are, what your good at, and how you can bring value to an organization. The basics of selling any product or service is finding the problem, not always just the solution. While solutions are important, sometimes it's more important to evaluate the entire problem before finding that solution. You can’t do everything. Utilize your genius and bring in others who have the skills you need to keep growing. Collaboration is key! Innovation is the core to any businesses or organizations success. Make sure you are at the forefront of that innovation and implement core principles to guide you through the process. Every failure comes with a spreadsheet or document that looks amazing. Failures are learning lessons and part of your growth process. Embrace the failure! 3 Bold and Kick-Ass Quotes: “Be true to yourself while recognizing you have to create value.” - Steve Shapiro“The role of a leader is to create other leaders.” - Steve Shapiro “If you do even a subtle shift, you can have a big impact.” - Steve Shapiro Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with Steve!Website: www.stephenshapiro.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Shapiroinnovates/ Twitter: www.twitter.com/stephenshapiro LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/shapiroinnovates/ Click the hyperlink below to connect directly with us!Website: http://www.ThinkBoldBeBold.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ThinkBoldBeBold/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thinkboldbebold/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/thinkboldbebold Sponsored by Mavericks Mastermind Until next time, Do Something Nice for Someone!
