Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss Emile Zola's greatest literary success, his thirteenth novel in a series exploring the extended Rougon-Macquart family. The relative here is Etienne Lantier, already known to Zola's readers as one of the blighted branch of the family tree and his story is set in Northern France. It opens with Etienne trudging towards a coalmine at night seeking work, and soon he is caught up in a bleak world in which starving families struggle and then strike, as they try to hold on to the last scraps of their humanity and the hope of change. Do you remember at the height of the pandemic when we were locked in WA under the hard border? It might feel like a world away for some, for others, the rigmarole of having to apply to enter or exit the state using the G2G pass is still raw. Even though G2G passes are no longer in use, there are concerns that the data from them could be around - and kept by WA police for a long time to come. In answer to questions by the shadow police spokesperson Peter Collier in state parliament this week, the government explained that G2G pass data would be managed by police for 25 years, or in some cases, until 2047. That's attracted a wave of concerns among some in the cyber security community - especially following the Optus saga - and many - including Peter Collier have asked why that time period would be necessary.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's been revealed that some recently graduated police officers haven't completed all of their training, and are being allowed to work in administrative roles. This all came to light during questions in Parliament by shadow police minister Peter Collier, who joins the show to explain.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Peter Dutton will head to WA this week with his shadow cabinet, amid an internal storm over pre-selections, party control and the future direction of the embattled Liberals. In a clear sign of how important WA has become to the political fortunes of major parties, Mr Dutton's first shadow cabinet meeting will be held in WA on Wednesday. But his visit comes at a time when the party is embroiled in controversy. Federal and WA Liberals gathered at the Pan Pacific Hotel on Saturday to lick their wounds at a State Council meeting after the federal Election disaster which left the conservatives with only five of 15 Federal seats here in WA. On the agenda was how to make the party more appealing to disenchanted voters, with senior Liberal figures - such as former WA Liberal leader Bill Hassell - keen for the influence of factional powerbrokers, such as Liberal MPs Nick Goiran and Peter Collier to be diminished. Sunrise correspondent Matt Tinney and Ben O'Shea discuss whether this is the best idea for the embattled Liberal party. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A newly formed group of disenchanted WA Liberal Party members are demanding upper house Liberal MPs Nick Goiran and Peter Collier immediately resign. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Editor and Publisher of The New Criterion discusses highlights in this month's issue and remembers the life and work of Peter Collier.
Remembering Peter Collier, Zeke Bratkowski, Maria Perego, Robert Freeman, Bob Norris Peter Collier was the activist turned author who began his life as a radical and then converted to an anti-radical stance. Along with his colleague David Horowitz, he wrote about the destructive consequences of the 1960’s as well as biographies of the Fords, Kennedys, and Rockefellers. Zeke Bratkowski was the back-up quarterback to Bart Starr on the legendary green Bay Packer teams of the 1960’s. Maria Perego was the Italian puppeteer who created Topo Gigio, the mouse who enchanted millions on The Ed Sullivan Show. Robert Freeman was the photographer who created the memorable photo that served as the cover of “Meet The Beatles”, the group’s introductory album in the United States in 1964. Bob Norris was the model for one of the most successful advertising campaigns in history, “The Marlboro Man.”
“As delegates gather in London for the annual Grain Market Outlook Conference today, David Eudall and Peter Collier of AHDB’s Market Intelligence sit down to review the latest market data. David and Peter discuss global issues, with lower prices resulting from trade surpluses meaning plenty of export competition for cereals. Meanwhile it’s a varied picture for oilseeds with plenty of soya beans coming from the US but a significantly reduced rapeseed crop across Europe. Turning to the UK, David and Peter are almost knocked of their chairs by the sheer size of the UK barley crop, piling on the pressure to find export opportunities but with Brexit looming finding demand is going to be a big challenge. Did you know JFK smoked pot in the white house? While in the white house he suffered from severe back pain and addison’s disease, some claim Kennedy used cannabis to treat his conditions but there is no supporting evidence for this myth. He was taking several medications to help him function.“On the evening of July 16, 1962, according to [Washington Post executive] Jim Truitt, Kennedy and Mary Meyer smoked marijuana together. … The president smoked three of the six joints Mary brought to him. At first he felt no effects. ”According to Mr. Truitt, “They smoked three of the joints before he (J.F.K.) told her: ‘No more. Suppose the Russians did something now.'”The most widely referenced account of Kennedy’s supposed marijuana use was not primarily linked with his health or with medical treatment. Rather, it was an anecdotal account of JFK’s supposedly being introduced to recreational pot use by one of his mistresses that was published in the National Enquirer tabloid in 1976 and referenced in the 1984 book The Kennedys: An American Drama by Peter Collier and David Horowitz. Published in 1972, Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals still enjoys brisk sales. With a former community organizer now commander-in-chief, and the idea of transformative leadership through radical change not just a theory, it is important for partisans of the Constitution to understand the roots of today's radicalism. Presented as part of the First Principles on First Fridays series for the month of July, 2010. Recorded July 9, 2010. (c) Hillsdale College, 2010. David Joel Horowitz is an American conservative writer. He is a founder and current president of the think tank the David Horowitz Freedom Center; editor of the Center's publication, FrontPage Magazine; and director of Discover the Networks, a website that tracks individuals and groups on the political left. Horowitz also founded the organization Students for Academic Freedom. Horowitz has written several books with author Peter Collier, including four on prominent 20th-century American political families that had members elected to the presidency. He and Collier have collaborated on books about current cultural criticism. Horowitz has also worked as a columnist for Salon. Its then-editor Joan Walsh described him as a "conservative provocateur". From 1956 to 1975, Horowitz was an outspoken adherent of the New Left. He later rejected liberal and progressive ideas completely and has since become a proponent of conservatism. Horowitz has recounted his ideological journey in a series of retrospective books, culminating with his 1996 memoir Radical Son: A Generational Odyssey.
