Why is our information landscape leaving so many people overwhelmed, cynical, or checked out?In this episode, Will and Josh sit down with award-winning journalist Julie Rose, host of the Top of Mind and Uncomfy podcasts, to explore the moral cost of our fast-paced, sensational news culture. After years at NPR stations and BYUradio, Julie burned out—and reimagined journalism from the ground up. She now creates longform conversations designed to slow us down, challenge certainty, and foster empathy.Together, they unpack media bias, bridge-building across ideological divides, abortion discourse, and why persuasion may not be the goal of dialogue—but curiosity might be. If you've ever felt disillusioned with the news, this is your invitation to rethink how you consume—and contribute to—the conversation.
Why are Americans so uncomfortable around sadness and grief? Cultural psychologist Matthew Whoolery has lived and taught all over the world—from Egypt to India to Bulgaria—and he's learned something surprising: in many cultures, emotional pain is shared, not hidden. In this episode of Uncomfy, Professor Whoolery chats with host Julie Rose about the time his Egyptian students cried with him after his father died and why their immediate response of closeness and community shocked his American sensibilities. He shares how our Western obsession with individualism can make grief worse and what we can learn from other cultures about caring for others in times of need. Gun safety advocate, documentarian, and author Heidi Yewman sits down with host Julie Rose to talk about the most uncomfortable question she ever asked: “Do you have guns in your home, and are they locked up?” After her former teacher and coach was killed in the Columbine High School massacre, Heidi turned her grief into action. In this episode of Uncomfy, she shares how asking the right question could prevent tragedy, what she learned from interviewing people gun owners and who pulled the trigger, and why empathy—not judgment—is the key to meaningful conversations around guns in America. Why do we build walls—emotional, social, ideological—and what would it take to break them down? In this thought-provoking episode of Uncomfy, anthropologist Anand Pandian joins host Julie Rose to explore the infrastructure of discomfort in America. Drawing from his new book, “Something Between Us: The Everyday Walls of American Life and How to Take Them Down,” Pandian recounts stories from his journey across America, including attending a Trump victory rally as a liberal, or choosing to reconnect with a conservative childhood friend. These experiences reveal how fear and familiarity shape our comfort zones and what happens when we choose to step beyond them. Amy Dott Harmer has spent a decade answering that question—not for herself, but for thousands of refugees in Utah. "Why doesn't God answer my prayers? Is God even real?" Especially around Easter, when faith is supposed to feel joyful and full, these questions can feel even heavier. In this special Easter episode, host Julie Rose speaks with Reverend Kyle Norman—Rector and Dean of St. Paul's Anglican Cathedral and author of “Alive, Loved, and Free: Finding Jesus When Faith is Hard.” Together they talk through the hidden struggles of spiritual discouragement, doubt, and the quiet shame that can follow when life falls apart—especially for those who deeply believe. Kyle shares how his wife's battle with cancer led him to some of the hardest faith questions of his life: “Is God judging my family? If we were better Christians, would this not have happened?” Julie and Kyle explore what it means to keep seeking God, even when He feels far away—and how Easter can be a time of renewed hope for those stuck in spiritual dry seasons. If you've ever felt like you're doing faith “wrong,” or wondered why prayer feels pointless, this conversation is for you. What happens when two people on opposite sides of a heated debate come together? Mark Rosenberg, a gun violence research advocate and former CDC official, and the late Congressman Jay Dickey, a staunch NRA supporter, were once bitter enemies. Their clash over the Dickey Amendment, which halted federal funding for gun violence research, seemed insurmountable. Holland had worked on Hillary Clinton's campaign and was a big fan of the candidate. Silvers was not. It was a tough one to navigate - and it was right at the beginning of their friendship and podcasting. Send us a Text Message.Has your mental health ever been impacted by the things you see on the news? You're not alone. In this episode of From Survivor to Thriver, we sat down with Julie Rose, who struggled with this to the point that she started avoiding it completely. Today, she shares the story of how she learned to manage her anxiety and start sharing the news in her own way that leaves people feeling informed and empowered rather than anxious and scared. Hearing the news doesn't have to fill you with dread and anxiety. Join us as Julie shares how there really is a better way to be informed about the world without sacrificing your mental health. Julie Rose has been a radio journalist for 20 years, reporting for NPR local stations and network shows like Morning Edition and All Things Considered. In 2015, she began hosting a nationally syndicated live interview show on Sirius XM 143 called Top of Mind. But, after several years on the air every day, she began fighting the urge to avoid the news completely, because of how anxious and angry it made her feel. She knew she couldn't be alone in that. So, in 2022, a new format for Top of Mind became the answer. Now a weekly podcast, the show tackles tough topics in a way that's honest and probing, but also leaves people feeling empathetic and empowered. Julie has since become an advocate for bridging divides in public discourse, something needed more now than ever before because news avoidance and polarized information sources are a serious problem. She feels strongly that we can't just avoid the news and expect to build the communities we want to live in. Julie has received a Gracie Award and multiple Edward R. Murrow Awards for her work in her field. In today's episode, we cover: The impact the news can have on your mental healthThe power of simply acknowledging what you're feeling How Julie came to create her podcast Balancing solution-oriented, unbiased views on the newsThe importance of curiosity and creative thinking in conversations What to do instead of skimming the news headlinesWe hope you enjoyed this conversation with Julie! We're excited to bring you an episode fro Top of Mind with Julie Rose, a podcast from BYU Radio about becoming better citizens and kinder neighbors.Government transparency is a basic tenet of American democracy. But the U.S. Constitution was drafted in total secrecy and the founders believed they couldn't have done the job otherwise. When is openness best in a democracy, and when does the cost outweigh the benefit? In this podcast episode Julie Rose hear the case for more openness from a citizen who used public records law to hold a state university accountable. A political historian explains how the founding fathers justified drafting the Constitution in secret and how that shaped the form of democracy the US has today. Rose also speaks with elected legislators from three different states grappling with the best way to balance the financial and logistical challenges of making government records open to the public. The lawmakers also differ in how much of their own email and text communication should be open to the public. A political scientist who's studied transparency in democracy describes how openness can empower special interest groups and make political gridlock worse. Finally, the episode discusses systemic solutions that could make government transparency work better for all Americans.

I was interviewed by Julie Rose for her "Stick With It" series where I open up about my personal journey of facing uncomfortable situations, particularly one where my identity as a feminist conflicted with my role as a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I share the emotional and challenging experience of reaching out to someone within my faith for an interview, only to be rejected based on my online writings. The rejection not only felt personal but also challenged my sense of belonging within my faith community. I describe my initial gut reactions, the subsequent email exchanges, and the ultimate resolution between us. This episode explores the complexities of identity, stereotypes, and the power of having difficult conversations. I hope listeners feel inspired to confront discomfort, seek understanding, and bridge gaps in their own lives. My friend Julie Rose joins us to talk about BYUradio's show (and now podcast) called “Top of Mind”. It is a production that talks about tough topics (such as politics, social issues) in a nuanced, respectful way. The show is not out to change your mind—but to “lower the temperature” and model how to talk about important subjects to keep us unified as Latter-day Saints. Julie (a season journalism veteran with over has a 20+-year of work—including stints in California and Charlotte, NC) brings her thoughtful voice to “Top of Mind” to help us be curious, informed, engaged, and willing to learn. Julie also shares some of her own story as a Latter-day Saint (in her late 40s, never married, serving as the YW president in her ward) and what she does to stay engaged in the Church and what we can do to help everyone feel a sense of belonging. I am deeply moved by the efforts of Julie, and everyone involved in the “Top of Mind” podcast and encourage everyone to check it out. Not only are the topics excellent, but the respectful approach helps us model how to discuss sensitive topics in our circles. I am also deeply moved by Julie's personal story. This is a special presentation of TOP OF MIND WITH JULIE ROSE which is about "becoming better citizens, kinder neighbors and more effective advocates." Here are the show notes on this episode from our friends at TOP OF MIND: About 45,000 Americans died from gun violence in 2022. A similar number died the year before. About half of those deaths are gun suicides. The other half are gun homicides. Mass shootings tend to capture the most attention and outrage, but they're just a small fraction of the total number of gun deaths each year. How can we reduce gun violence in America? Reducing the number of firearms in the country might help, but significant gun control laws seem unlikely in today's current political climate. In this podcast episode, we hear the stories of a violence interrupter, a suicide prevention and gun safety advocate, and a mass shooting researcher to help us feel more hopeful about America's gun violence problem. Podcast Guests: DeQuann Stanley, Outreach Supervisor at Save Our Streets, Crown Heights, Brooklyn Erin Dunkerly, trial attorney in California, advocate for suicide prevention Mark Follman, National Affairs Editor at Mother Jones.
