In this week's episode we'll learn about the role of autologous transplant for relapsed myeloma. In an updated analysis of the GMMG ReLApsE trial, salvage autologous transplant offered no survival benefit compared to control chemotherapy. These findings may have clinical implications in an era of alternative, and highly effective, treatment options. After that: Response to DDAVP, or desmopressin, in bleeding disorders. This study is the first large scale meta-analysis to assess the response rate to DDAVP in bleeding disorders. Authors provide new insights into determinants of response, which vary according to the disease type. Finally, turning to diffuse large B cell lymphoma. Germinal center B cells depend on the activity of DOT1 and EZH2 to maintain their pro-proliferative identity. Un procès pour l'exemple : il faut éviter que de tels événements ne se reproduisent. Le « meneur » écope d'une peine de cinq ans de prison et d'une très grosse amende. D'autres peines de huit à vingt-quatre mois d'incarcération sont encore prononcées. Il y a dix acquittements. La plupart des accusés ne savent pas signer leur nom. Le lendemain, le journal bruxellois « La liberté » écrit : « Cette grève est le fait de gens qui ont indiscutablement faim. Voilà le procès de Jean Valjean ! On ne vole pas un peu de farine dans son tablier ou dans un sac quand on n'a pas faim ! » Ces émeutes de 1867 constituent un épisode fondateur de l'histoire sociale de Charleroi. Une région, comme d'autres, fragilisée par les pénuries alimentaires et le prix exorbitant des denrées. Comment les pouvoirs publics ont-ils réagi à ces mouvements de mécontentement, à ces révoltes ? En quoi ces émeutes et ces grèves ont-elles été utiles dans l'organisation d'une solidarité des travailleurs ? Quel est le rôle des femmes ? Debido a su postura política y opciones personales, como su reconocido ateísmo, Baroja no disfrutó de demasiados reconocimientos en vida, aunque fue miembro de la Real Academia de la Lengua desde 1935. Wykład Ewy Frąckowiak, Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie, 30 stycznia 2020 [1h09min] https://wszechnica.org.pl/wyklad/z-badan-nad-grafika-autorska-drugiej-polowy-xix-wieku-ewa-frackowiak/ Grafika autorska w XIX w. była tematem wykładu Ewy Frąckowiak, który towarzyszył ekspozycji „Wystawa, które nie było… Ignacy Łopieński (1865-1941) w Muzeum Narodowym w Warszawie. Prelegentka podczas pierwszej część wykładu opowiada o XIX-wiecznych akwaforcistach, którzy działali przede wszystkim we Francji. W drugiej połowie tego stulecia akwaforta przestała być traktowana tam jako ilustracja do tekstów drukowanych. Technika graficzna przerodziła się w samodzielną dziedzinę sztuki. Artyści zwani peintre-graveurami, czyli malarzami grafikami, pchnęli ją na drogę eksperymentów technicznych i wizualnych. Twórcy ci, w celu podniesienie rangi swoich działań, w 1862 r. utworzyli Towarzystwo Akwaforcistów. Tutaj grafika autorska jest omówiona na przykładzie prac takich twórców, jak Jean Baptiste-Camille Corot, Jean-François Millet, Auguste Delâtre czy Félix Bracquemond. Ewa Frąckowiak przybliża tajniki warsztatu artystów oraz historię, jaka stoi za powstaniem ich dzieł. W kolejnej części swojego wystąpienia prelegentka opowiada o innych technikach graficznych popularnych w XIX w. Omawia cynkografię, litografię i drzeworyt. Szerzej w tym kontekście pojawiają się Pierre Bonnard, Ambroise Vollard, Eugène Carrière, Maurice Denise, Vincent van Gogh, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Félix Vallotton i Paula Gaugin. Grafika autorska w „Germinalu” Wykład zamyka szersze opisanie dwóch wydawnictw związanych z grafiką autorską w XIX w. Pierwsze z nich to francuski „Germinal”. Tekę przygotował Julius Meier-Graephe, słynny historyk i krytyk sztuki. Zawierała 20 rycin autorskich. Tytuł nawiązywał do powieści Emila Zoli i symbolizował nowoczesność oraz rewolucyjne zmiany w sztuce. Twórcy zamówionych prac otrzymali swobodę wyboru tematyki, techniki, formatu a nawet rodzaju papieru, na którym odbito prace. Wydawnictwo zostało powielone w 100 numerowanych egzemplarzach. Muzeum Narodowe w Warszawie jest jedyną oprócz Biblioteki Narodowej we Francji instytucją, która posiada w swoich zbiorach kompletną tekę. Drugie z opisanych wydawnictw to niemieckie czasopismo i wydawnictwo artystyczne „Pan”. Prelegenka omawia prace związanych z wydawnictwem twórców, jak Peter Behrens, Félicien Rops, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, Maurice Denis, Auguste Rodin, Käthe Kollwitz, Max Klinger, Walter Leistikow, Emil Orlik, Frits Lugt. En su trabajo, Carlos Amorales se interesa principalmente por el lenguaje y la imposibilidad-posibilidad de comunicar por medio de formas irreconocibles o no codificables: sonidos, gestos y símbolos. Amorales experimenta en los límites entre la imagen y el signo con una variedad de medios: animación, video, cine, dibujo, instalación, performance y sonido. Su práctica se basa en diferentes formas de traducción: instrumentos que se transforman en personajes de sus filmes, letras que se vuelven formas y narrativas que devienen lenguaje corporal. Las obras de Amorales existen en un mundo alterno, paralelo al nuestro, que se rige por sus propias reglas y donde evolucionan constantemente, al igual que el proceso de su producción. Carlos Amorales estudió en Ámsterdam en la Gerrit Rietveld Academie (1996–97) y Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten (1992-95). Ha realizado residencias artísticas en el Atelier Calder en Saché (2012) y MAC/VAL en Vitry-sur-Seine (2011) en Francia, y en Estados Unidos como parte del programa Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship en Washington (2010). Sus exposiciones más representativas incluyen The Factory en el Stedelijk Museum (2019) en Ámsterdam, Axiomas para la Acción en MUAC de la Ciudad de México (2018), The Man Who Did All Things Forbidden en el Philadelphia Museum of Art en Filadelfia (2014), Germinal en el Museo Tamayo de la Ciudad de México (2013), entre otras. "Gozo" de Azahara Alonso  (Siruela) ha sido elegida por el gremio de libreros como mejor libro de no ficción del año y este viernes 3 de mayo ha entrado con todos los honores en la Biblioteca de Antonio Martínez Asensio de Hoy por Hoy. Ya estaba en nuestras estanterías, de hecho fue el primer libro que archivó  nuestro bibliotecario  el pasado septiembre. "Gozo" es un ensayo incalificable a mitad de camino entre la crónica y  el diario. Cuenta en primera persona la historia de una joven que decide irse con su pareja a la isla de Gozo (Malta) para busca un sentido a la vida y para decidir que hacer con ella. En ese año de aislamiento reflexiona sobre el trabajo,  el tiempo libre, la pereza y la culpa por no hacer nada, el turismo o  la obsesión por fotografiarlo todo. Es un libro que nos pone ante el espejo de un mundo en el que hemos vendido todo nuestro tiempo. Además de la visita a la Biblioteca de Azahara Alonso, Antonio Martínez Asensio como homenaje al 1  y al 2 de mayo nos ha traído tres libros: "Diario de peón"  de Thierry Metz (Periférica), Emilio Zola "Germinal" (Alianza) y "El 19 de marzo y el 2 de mayo" de Benito Pérez Galdós (Alianza). Azahara Alonso nos donó tres libros: "Matar a Platón" de Chantal Maillard (Tusquets), "La invención de Morel" de Adolfo Bioy Casares (Alfaguara) y  "Tractatus" de Ludwig Wittgenstein ( Cátedra) . El empleado Pepe Rubio nos trajo novedades: "La estrella más hermosa" de Yukio Mishina (Alianza) y "La ciudad y sus muros inciertos"  de Haruki Murakami (Tusquets). El libro perdido rescatado por Pascual Donate "La fuente de la fama:un paseo por el Madrid del Barrio de las Letras" de José María Goicoechea y Antonio Tiedra (Cordelia) . También entró entró en nuestros anaqueles un ejemplas de "Un libro una hora", en este caso "El principito" de Antoine de Saint-Exupery. Y los último en donar a nuestra biblioteca, los que llamaron primero, los oyentes que dejaron en las estanterías "La madre" de Máximo Gorki (Cátedra) , "Decidme cómo es un árbol" de Marcos Ana (Umbriel) y "el tiempo que nos une" de Alejandro Palomas (Matriarca)

In this episode, Germinal argues that inflation is not a necessary condition to stimulate economic growth because the growth of an economy is not based on an increase in the price of goods and services but on an increase in their quantity. Inflation is the result of a mismatch between price and quantity engineered by governments and central banks. Germinal argues that central banks approach economic growth the wrong way, as they try to stimulate aggregate demand by expansionary monetary policy while economic growth should be stimulated from the supply-side, because demand affects prices but not quantity while supply affects quantity and quantity affects prices since the total quantity of goods and services are what affect prices, and not the other way around. Germinal maintained that inflation, rather than being an asset to economic growth as central bankers want to make people believe, is a hindrance to growth because in addition to reducing the purchasing power of consumers, it also generated the uneven distirbution of wealth through the Cantillon Effect.

In this episode, Germinal & Louis address the issue of whether business leaders are effective political leaders. Louis argues that Business Leaders are not good politicians because they lack the ideological component that make differentiates politicians from business leaders when it comes to make political decisions. The ideological component is what makes politicians committed to implement policies that are aligned with their beliefs. Moreover, Louis stated that since it counterproductive for government to produce surpluses, Business leaders won't be able to implement laws that will make government more active in providing services to the people.  Germinal, on the other hand, argued that Business leaders are fit to be effective political leaders because their profit-motive mindset will drive them to producing surpluses rather than maintaining deficits. And producing surplus enable to reduce the size and role of government in the economy.

Ep. 80: With philosopher, author, and Auerbach scholar Matthias Bormuth (b.1963), a professor of Comparative Intellectual History at University of Oldenburg. On Erich Auerbach's MIMESIS: The Representation of Reality in Western Literature (1946), and how it was influenced by the great Neapolitan thinker Giambattista Vico's NEW SCIENCE (1744). I first met Matthias at this Phillip Roth festival in Newark I wrote about back in March for the Paris Review: https://www.theparisreview.org/blog/2023/04/19/reading-myself-and-others-roth-festival-dispatch/ Giambattista Vico was born in Naples in 1668 and was a relatively unknown Professor of Rhetoric at the city's university. He'd work on and revise his ambitious work NEW SCIENCE throughout his life, publishing preliminary versions in 1725 and 1730, though it wasn't till his death in 1744 that the third and final version appeared. Vico's text, most of all his literal and historical view of Homer, would go on to hugely influence James Joyce's writing of Ulysses (a literal retelling of the Odyssey), along with other modernists. Erich Auerbach's 1946 work of literary criticism MIMESIS treats canonical texts from the Bible to Homer to Dante to Don Quixote to Zola up to Virginia Woolf as literal-historical writers trying to understand their time, only speaking from their provisional perspective, rather than as deific texts to unpack as divine providence. A German-Jew who fought for Germany in the first World War, Auerbach worked at a library from 1922-1929, during which time he translated Vico's NEW SCIENCE into German for the first time. Matthias and I try to unpack the connection between these two texts, and to find the relevance between them and our current age. Can term limits reduce the power of politicians? In this influence, Louis and Germinal argue the merits of having term limits, especially for the federal legislative branch. Germinal argues that term limits are necessary to enhance political alternation and more importantly, to curb the power of politicians who use the power of their office to apply rent-seeking. Thus, Germinal argues that the application of term limits should come with a set of measures that will regulate politicians behavior in order to maximize output for their constituencies while serving their terms. Louis, on the other hand, argues that if term limits will incentivize politicians to be even more corrupt before leaving office, knowing that they won't have to worry about reelection. He believes that the lack of term limits enables experienced politicians to cement their legacies as they have more time in office to implement long-term policies.

Cinematographer Xavier Dolléans has worked extensively in France on films, commercials, music videos and the award-winning French series, Germinal. The Peacock show Mrs. Davis marks his move into working on more U.S. based productions. Xavier was the DP for the Spain unit of the show. He enjoys working in narrative storytelling, where he can tell longer stories and find a look that creates the rhythm of the story. Mrs. Davis is a humorous, dramatic and action-packed science fiction show about a powerful artificial intelligence known as Mrs. Davis. The algorithm has taken control of most people's every day lives, and they worship Mrs. Davis with cultlike devotion. An unconventional nun, Sister Simone, has made a deal with the AI to find and destroy the Holy Grail in return for it destroying itself. Xavier began five weeks of prep in Spain for Mrs. Davis, which takes place across the globe. The production shot in several different parts of Spain to stand in for other countries, such as Scotland. The northern part of Spain looked enough like Scotland and was far less cold and rainy. Xavier worked with a mix of American and Spanish crew. The production used U.S. production standards, with very little overlap between departments, but with European labor rules of working just 8-10 hours per day. When Xavier first read the script for Mrs. Davis, he could understand what was happening in each scene, but the overarching story was extremely complex, exciting and unpredictable. He enjoyed the depth of the story which is only revealed a tiny bit at a time. Xavier was able to give hints with camera framing and movement of what is really happening or what a character is thinking. A camera move can reveal a lot in each episode, and all of the visuals were intentional and carefully shotlisted. Xavier and cinematographer Joe Anderson used Caldwell anamorphic lenses, which created the flare and bokeh they were looking for. Xavier began his career in filmmaking working in visual effects. He had the opportunity to spend time on set as an assistant director, and discovered he liked the job of DOP because it combined the technical with the artistic point of view of the story. Xavier sees filmmaking as a lifestyle for the mind and the body.
