On September 27, 1989, a group of children playing in a park in Voronezh, Russia, claimed to see a UFO land and aliens emerge. The incident made headlines around the world, and remains one of the most well-known and well-documented UFO sightings in history. In the first half of today's episode, we'll take a closer look at the Voronezh UFO incident. We'll examine the evidence, hear from witnesses, and discuss the different theories about what may have happened. We'll also explore the cultural significance of the incident, and its impact on our understanding of UFOs and extraterrestrial life. In the second half of today's episode, we'll discuss the Petrozavodsk Phenomena. In September 1977, a series of strange and unexplained phenomena occurred in the city of Petrozavodsk, Russia. Residents reported seeing mysterious lights in the sky, hearing strange noises, and experiencing other unexplained events. The Petrozavodsk Phenomena became one of the most well-known and well-documented UFO sightings in Russian history. What's happening in Russian skies? Tune in to find out!
Come along for the finale! You can find all of our wonderful links on the Linktree: https://linktr.ee/allts The Petrozavodsk phenomenon refers to a series of mysterious sightings on September 20, 1977, across Petrozavodsk, USSR, and other parts of Europe and Asia. Witnesses reported unusual celestial activity, including bright, luminous objects and formations that defied simple explanation. Sightings Petrozavodsk, USSR: Residents described seeing a bright object in the sky, radiating beams of light resembling a "jellyfish" shape. The light reportedly caused a luminous, fine rain to fall, leading some to think the phenomenon had physical effects on the environment. The object moved slowly, hovered for a time, and then ascended. Other Locations: Similar sightings were reported over Scandinavia, the Baltic Sea, and parts of Eastern Europe and Asia. Observers described glowing disks, bright flashes, and unusual atmospheric phenomena, often lasting for several minutes. These reports were widely documented in the media and prompted scientific investigations. The sightings occurred during a period of heightened interest in UFOs and cosmic phenomena in the late 20th century. Possible Explanations Several theories have been proposed to explain the Petrozavodsk phenomenon: Soviet Satellite Launch (Cosmos-955): The Soviet Union launched the Kosmos-955 satellite on the same day. The rocket's exhaust or re-entry effects could have produced unusual atmospheric light displays. Auroral Phenomena: Some researchers suggested that natural auroras or other atmospheric phenomena might account for the lights, especially given the region's proximity to the Arctic Circle. Meteorological Effects: Rare weather conditions, such as high-altitude ice crystals reflecting light or specific cloud formations, could have contributed to the unusual visual effects. UFO Hypothesis: Some proponents of extraterrestrial theories interpreted the phenomenon as evidence of an unidentified flying object or alien activity. The "jellyfish" description, coupled with the luminous rain, has fueled speculation among UFO enthusiasts. Psychological and Perceptual Factors: Mass hysteria or misinterpretation of ordinary objects (e.g., aircraft or celestial events) might have influenced eyewitness reports.

Explore how sightings of UFOs and aliens seized the world's attention and discover what the fascination with flying saucers and extraterrestrial visitors says about our changing views on science, technology, and the paranormal. In the summer of 1947, a private pilot flying over the state of Washington saw what he described as several pie pan-shaped aircraft traveling in formation at remarkably high speed. Within days, journalists began referring to the objects as "flying saucers." Over the course of that summer, Americans reported seeing them in the skies overhead. News quickly spread, and within a few years, flying saucers were being spotted across the world. The question on everyone's mind was, what were they? Some new super weapon in the Cold War? Strange weather patterns? Optical illusions? Or perhaps it was all a case of mass hysteria? Some, however, concluded they could only be one thing: spacecrafts built and piloted by extraterrestrials. The age of the unidentified flying object, the UFO, had arrived.Greg Eghigian tells the story of the world's fascination with UFOs and the prospect that they were the work of visitors from outer space. While accounts of great wonders in the sky date back to antiquity, reports of UFOs took place against the unique backdrop of the Cold War and space age, giving rise to disputed government inquiries, breathtaking news stories, and single-minded sleuths. After the Flying Saucers Came traces how a seemingly isolated incident sparked an international drama involving shady figures, questionable evidence, suspicions of conspiracy, hoaxes, new religions, scandals, unsettling alien encounters, debunkers, and celebrities. It examines how descriptions, theories, and debates about unidentified flying objects and alien abduction changed over time and how they appeared in the United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Russia. And it explores the impact UFOs have had on our understanding of space, science, technology, and ourselves up through the present day.Replete with stories of the people who have made up the ufology community, the military and defense units that investigate them, the scientists and psychologists who have researched these unexplained encounters, and the many novels, movies, TV shows, and websites that have explored these phenomena, After the Flying Saucers Came speaks to believers and skeptics alike.BioI'm a historian of the human sciences and medicine as well as modern Europe. I am particularly interested in how societies use science, technology, and medicine to define and treat people and behaviors deemed to be troubling, bizarre, or outright dangerous. My research has therefore focused on such things as disability, delinquency, criminality, mental illness, and security. More recently, my attention has shifted to studying the modern history of supernatural and paranormal phenomena. My latest book is a history of reports of UFOs and claims of alien contact throughout the world. I am presently working on two new book projects: the first is a broad overview of the history of madness from the ancient world to the present; the second is a study of the alien abduction phenomenon in the late-20th century.https://www.amzn.com/dp/B0CWGLF68H/ https://www.pastliveshypnosis.co.uk/https://www.patreon.com/alienufopodcast

After the Flying Saucers Came: A Global History of the UFO Phenomenon (Oxford UP, 2024) traces how a seemingly isolated incident sparked an international drama involving shady figures, questionable evidence, suspicions of conspiracy, hoaxes, new religions, scandals, unsettling alien encounters, debunkers, and celebrities. It examines how descriptions, theories, and debates about unidentified flying objects and alien abduction changed over time and how they appeared in the United States, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Russia. And it explores the impact UFOs have had on our understanding of space, science, technology, and ourselves up through the present day. Replete with stories of the people who have made up the ufology community, the military and defense units that investigate them, the scientists and psychologists who have researched these unexplained encounters, and the many novels, movies, TV shows, and websites that have explored these phenomena, After the Flying Saucers Came speaks to believers and skeptics alike.

This is episode 3 and the Russians have just bombed Helsinki on the morning of 30th November 1939 — missing most of the vital infrastructure but hitting the residential area and a square in front of the main railway station, as well as a hangar at Malmi Airfield. Two hundred people died in the first few hours of the invasion, most were civilians. The Finns were caught totally off guard - their anti-aircraft gunners managed to fire off a few shots but by then Russian bombers had turned and were miles away. As the planes disappeared to the east, air raid sirens began to wail, a belated warning which by then was a waste of time. However, after lunch, the planes were back. Fifteen Red Air Force bombers swept in for another raid soon after the all-clear had sounded in Helsinki, the streets were choked with people clearing up after the morning attack — fifty more civilians died and at least 150 were wounded in this second bombing run. The Russians also targeted other towns, including Viipuri, the harbour in Turku, and they took aim at the hydroelectric plant at Imatra and then bombed a small gas mask factory in Lahti. The hydroelectric plant at Imatra was not the only target, the Russians bombed an important road between the northern shores of Lake Ladoga and Helsinki, north of the Mannerheim Line. While this was going on, the Red Army landed specialist commandos on the uninhabited islands of Sieksari, Lavansaari, Suursaari and Tytarsaari —without firing a shot. Back in Helsinki, the shock of the attack was visible on everyone's faces. Parts of the city were on fire and it was through this maze of blackened buildings, corpses and craters in the roads that Field Marshal Gustav Mannerheim wound his way in his chauffered car. There was no time to waste. Finland's geography suited their initial plans. The Karelia Isthmus was the lynchpin, so Mannerheim was concentrating his defences there. The only other area that offered an immediate threat, was the 65 mile stretch just north of Lake Ladoga's shores. There were two good roads here, one started from inside Russia at Petrozavodsk, and the other from Murmansk along the rocky coast of Lake Ladoga. Both roads converged near the small town of Kitela, and a few miles from there was Finlands crucial rail network. It also was a point where good roads led north and south. Mannerheim knew that the Russians were going to aim at these two areas and he was right. This central zone near Kitela was the backdoor to the Isthmus and could support a large army on the move. The Finns were ready for this backdoor trick, they'd been practicing during war games in the preceding years for precisely this route. The strategy was even more interesting. They would let the large Soviet Army move along these roads until they reached a line of defences that linked Lake Ladoga to Kitela and another Lake called Syskyjarvi. Then they'd pin down the Russians, and hit their logistic route now strung out back eastwards, their left flank now up against Lake Ladoga, and the right exposed to Finnish soldiers on skis. The would cut off the head of the Russian salient and then methodically destroy the Russian army north of Ladoga. Desmond Latham blog

In the early hours one September morning in the late 1970s in the Soviet Union, with the Cold War still very real,, residents of a small Russian town saw a bizarre light moving overhead. As they watched, the light morphed into a strange jellyfish-like object projecting “thousands of beams” and that it “looked like heavy rain” even leaving physical evidence. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!Thanks to the Tin Foil Mulisha

During the Cold War, the constant threat of a global nuclear conflict was a dark spectre that haunted the heads of the world's superpowers. Almost every occurrence of objects launched into the atmosphere had to be identified and accounted for. Hundreds of missile tests and satellite launches from both sides of the Iron Curtain were matters of national concern. But it wasn't until 1978 that the Soviet Union took formal action to investigate UFOs that had been reported all across the country. This decision came on the heels of a spectacular event that occurred in the late summer of the year before. An event that was observed by scores of witnesses across northwestern Russia and as far as Finland. An enormous UFO that seemed to have almost biological properties as it lit up the night sky. This week our podcast is devoted to the historian and head of the branch of Memorial in Karelia, Yury Dmitriev. Dmitriev's name is especially closely connected to Sandarmokh. It was he who led the expedition there in 1997 that discovered the location of the mass burials of victims of Stalinist repression. Today Dmitriev remains in pre-trial detention as he awaits the outcome of his second trial on charges of child pornography. Our guests are Irina Flige, human rights defender and director of the Memorial Scientific Research Centre, Anatoly Razumov, a historian and expert on the Stalin-era repressions, and Andrea Gullotta, a lecturer at Glasgow University and expert on the life and culture of the Gulag.Sergei Nikitin writes on Facebook: Our conversation yesterday was extremely interesting with absolutely wonderful people: Irina Flige, director of the Memorial Scientific Research Centre (St. Petersburg); Anatoly Razumov, historian and head of the Returned Names centre (also St. Petersburg); and Andrea Gullotta, lecturer at the University of Glasgow (School of Modern Languages & Cultures) and author of Russia's Memory War on the Gulag. We talked for more than an hour about Yury Dmitriev and his work over many years to determine the burial sites of victims of political repression in Sandarmokh, Karelia. In yesterday's conversation we talked about how the Russian authorities are trying to interfere with the work of NGOs and independent researchers. About the fact that we see not only the process of rewriting history, but also the rewriting of victims' personalities. About the fact that there is a war of memory, and it is a hybrid war with different elements and aspects. Historical memory in Russia - according to Irina Flige - has hybrid forms: I remember this; I do not remember that. Andrea Gullotta spoke about his resarch into 'the war of memory.' He also noted the importance of international support for Yury Dmitriev. Historian Anatoli Razumov talked about Dmitriev as a historian. He related how they went to Sandormokh together 20 years ago. It is very important to do our utmost so that the memory of state atrocities does not go away. So that new generations know what happened, so that the history cannot be rewritten by either the Chekists who came to power, or the "specialists" serving them. Yury Dmitriev (born 1956 in Petrozavodsk) is a human rights activist and local historian in Karelia who has worked since the early 1990s to locate the execution sites of Stalin's Terror and identify the victims. Dmitriev was arrested in December 2016 and charged with making pornographic images of his foster daughter. In April 2018 he was acquitted of the charges but sentenced to 30 months in prison for possession of a gun. In June 2018 a second criminal case was opened against him on the basis of 'newly discovered circumstances.' His second trial is ongoing and Dmitriev remains in pre-trial detention. This podcast is in the Russian language. You can also hear these podcasts on SoundCloud, Spotify and iTunes. The music is from Stravinsky's Elegy for Solo Viola, played here by Karolina Errera.
