Best In Wealth - Best Practices for Real People, Investments, Retirement Planning, Money Management, Wealth Building, Financi

Podcast Intro: Do you want to finish your life well? Today in an All-Pro Dad group that I run at my kids' elementary school we talked about finishing well. I talked about trying your best but knowing you will make mistakes in any sport, instrument, or competition that you are involved in. The key is learning from the mistake and then forgetting about it so you can finish well. If you dwell on your mistakes you will not finish well. What about your life? How will you ensure that you will finish well? To finish well we need to plan well. In the world of financial planning, that means turning our dreams into goals and eventually our goals into reality.  Podcast Topic of the Day: You Need Retirement Goals Three Reasons You Need Retirement Goals 1.  Otherwise, it is just a pile of money. People who focus on the dollar amount they have saved and not what they will do with their money have a hard time dreaming. They also have a hard time spending the pile since they spent their whole life focusing on the number. 2.  Goals help you stay MOTIVATED. If you want to finish well, you need motivation. Life is hard and busy so we need to keep our eye on the goals we will finish well. 3.  Goals will determine how much you actually need to save. Maybe you are not saving enough, or perhaps you can afford to enjoy some of life now because you are saving too much. Tune in and listen to the podcast as I share some of the most common dreams and goals people have in retirement. Listen to the end to ensure you will finish well! Podcast Closing Words: We all have a desire to finish well. Once in a while, I imagine myself in my last days. I want to say to myself, “Scott, you finished well.” I want you to say the same thing. Best In Wealth - Best Practices for Real People, Investments, Retirement Planning, Money Management, Wealth Building, Financi

Podcast Intro: Scott starts the podcast by discussing the recent roller coaster ride that has happened in the global financial markets over the past couple of weeks and how the ups and downs can make many people feel out of control. Feeling out of control is often how people feel when they have a lot of debt. Scott mentions that he is teaching Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (FPU) at his church and his job is to help motivate and provide encouragement to people that have a lot of debt so that soon enough these people will feel in control of their finances. Podcast Topic of the Day: How to do a Budget The topic of the day is How to do a Budget. During the podcast, Scott covers 7 easy steps to create a budget, or a “spending plan” as Scott prefers to call it. According to Scott, all people need a spending plan.  Step #1 for building a spending plan is to acknowledge that both people in the relationship must participate in the development of the spending plan (or budget). If you are single, then you can skip Step #1. Scott discusses how it is likely that one person may be the budget “nerd” and their partner may be the “free spirit”, but it is critical that both participate in the development of the spending plan.   Step #2 for building a spending plan is to acknowledge that you are going to make a zero-dollar budget. In other words, you are going to assign every dollar you make to a budget entry. Step #3 for building a spending plan is to list out all monthly expenses by category. Everything that you spend money on during a month needs to be listed. This list should also include your monthly saving and your monthly giving, and it should cover every dollar of your household take home pay. Scott reviews Dave Ramsey’s basic guidelines that Dave recommends for various expense categories; however, he cautions that these are just basic guidelines and may vary by an individual’s unique situation. The first category Dave recommends placing at the top of your monthly expenses is giving, and Dave recommends starting with 10% of your take home pay be allocated to giving. Even though you may be in debt, it is important to start giving now so that when you are out of debt later in life you can give more. The second category is saving, with a recommended allocation of 10-15%. Depending on how you are saving, you may already be saving 10-15% in a 401(k), therefore, you may not need to save anymore out of your take home pay. The third category is food with a recommended 10-15% allocation. Mortgage or rent is the 4th category with a recommended allocation of 25%. Those that are spending more than 25% on their mortgage or rent often find that there is not a lot of money left to spend in the other budget categories. Your utilities are the 5th category with a 5-10% allocation. Vehicle expenses such as gas, maintenance and oil changes should be allocated at 10% and are the 6th category. Note, this 10% does not typically include car payments. Fun money, or as Scott categorizes in his spending plan, a “flex fund” category should be included next. The fun money or flex fund should be allocated at 5-10% depending on your overall spending plan. The final categories are clothing 5-10%, entertainment 5-10% and a miscellaneous category that is 5-10%. The miscellaneous category is a great category to cover items that are missed or not known at the beginning of the month, such as a birthday party gift for a kid’s birthday that you or your child was invited to. Step #4 is to add up all the irregular expenses that do not occur on a monthly basis. Examples of these irregular expenses are annual car insurance payments, water bills, property tax bills, family birthday gifts, etc. Once you have identified and added up all of these expenses, divide the total by 12 and add a line item to

The law around organ donation is changing in the United Kingdom. From Spring 2020, all adults in England will be considered an organ donor when they die unless they had recorded a decision to opt out. This law was brought in due to the shortage of donors and the amount of people dying whilst waiting on the transplant wait list. This has stirred a bit of an interesting debate in the country and in today's podcast episode, Bimbola and Jo were joined by Elizabeth Ayelabola and Uche Lottee-Anajemba to discuss this interesting topic and come at it from a cultural perspective. Statistics have shown that black families are less likely to say yes to organ donation when approached in hospitals compared to white and asian families. Happy Easter to you! The Easter message to our podcast listeners is to 'begin to see life through a child's perspective'. The scriptures say (Matthew 18:3-5) - “I’m telling you, once and for all, that unless you return to square one and start over like children, you’re not even going to get a look at the kingdom, let alone get in. Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this child, will rank high in God’s kingdom. What’s more, when you receive the childlike on my account, it’s the same as receiving me. Magazines, television and social media are often blamed for portraying an ideal body image that causes people to question their looks and lose confidence in themselves. We are then encouraged to 'Love our bodies'. But really what does that mean? Does it mean love exactly how you are irrespective of colour, size, body mass, peculiarities etc. Or does it mean loving what you can't change but changing what you can to boost your self? Dieting is a good example of attempts to be a size which may or may not be ones natural body size disposition.   In today's podcast, Bimbola and Jo share their thoughts on what loving your body looks like to a variety of people. There's really no one answer fits all on this topic. It's quite subjective and personal!   Join us in this discussion via instagram, twitter, facebook or email. But if you do...what is the best thing to do? ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Follow-Up From Previous Episode Listener danteplay sent in his thoughts on our last episode: I'll try to keep it short but I had ideas through the entire Podcast. Great topic! My feeling is the Canadian Path is not jut for the youth. It is also up to Scouters to choose their own path. That may mean turning down some things. Volunteerism is a learned behavior in my opinion. I learned it from my Dad. My pack-aged son is learning it from me. The younger youth also need a proper life balance. My son is a cub helper in colony. He's in pack of course. Swim lesons and house league basketball take up another couple of nights. Yesterday he told me he signed up to be a lunch monitor with the younger grades. He was sad that he couldn't sign up for more than he did due to a conflict with track and field at school. I had to tell him it's ok to not volunteer for everything. We couldn't agree more. Knowing what you can commit to be involved with, and knowing what the limits of your involvement should be...these are both important things. Podcast Topic(s) Ken and Colin sit down to discuss a great article at Atlas Obscura that talks about various natural methods and signs that can be used to find your way (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), or to spot impending weather changes. And then we talk a bit about what to do when one gets lost outdoors. Also, here’s a photo of the Cub Scout handbooks that are mentioned in the episode, which finished printing just before this episode went up:   Shout-Outs The first shout-out goes to Dan, who sent along his thoughts as a new listener: Hello,I found your podcast a few weeks ago and have enjoyed the past couple episodes. It's great because I have so many different ideas that are outside of the resources available to me in Australia. My Scout den is running JOTA JOTI this year and I would love the chance for my Joeys to be able to talk to some Canada Beaver. However, this violates the Code of Conduct for the Credit and Debit Card Industry. You can't charge more for credit card payments legally. Some merchants offer discouts for cash payments but you can't just add the 2.4%. So there's that; don't add a surcharge to your popcorn prices if you're taking Square payments! Podcast Topic(s) Is there such a thing as too much Scouting? We'd like to answer “no”, of course, but in truth, it's very much a “yes”; it is both entirely possible, and entirely too easy, to get in over your head when it comes to being involved in the Scouting movement. And this is true for both youth and adults! And we are doing even better in the United Kingdom, where we rank #115 and #52, respectively. And we're one of the Featured Podcasts at our podcast host! I have my phases of falling out here and there for a few weeks due to school, but I'm working on getting my shit together and being serious all the time. My biggest problem, as with most people I'm sure, is nutrition. I don't eat bad at all, my problem is that I don't eat nearly enough. I usually eat quite clean but I definitely slack in the eating department. In my first year I put on that beginner muscle and went from 165-180 and I have always been quite lean. More specifically, should I ease into upping my caloric intake or is it okay to go from about 1000 calories or less a day to 3500 calories a day over night? Is it just a timing thing? Does getting ready for the pool after a workout and then showering before and after you get out of the pool just add too much time to the workout? Anyway, personally, I try to add swimming to my workout when possible. Thanks. Daria Hi guys! I'm sending this message all the way from San Francisco, CA. It has taken me forever to find a fitness podcast that is super informative without all the fluff and science jargon. NYMR is entertaining and very relatable. I listen to your podcast religiously and I'm not even religious! Anyway, I have a diet and fitness related question: 1.) I'm am a 35 year old female standing at 5'9" weighing at 142lbs w/ 14% body fat (via Hydrostatic). My ultimate goal is to be super lean. Although 14% BF is relatively low, I would like to be more shredded/cut. Based on my Hydrostatic test, I currently burn 1730 calories resting. Listening to your podcast, I know that I should be at a deficit if I want to lose more fat or get shredded. How much of a deficit is ideal? I'm currently averaging a 150-300 calorie deficit. 2.) My main form of fitness is Crossfit (which includes conditioning and strength training i.e. deadlift, squatting, cleans, snatching) but I also lift weights at your old regular gym (aka bro gym'ing) 1-2x/week. I understand that cardio is not the most ideal for muscle gain/fat loss, but HIIT is acceptable. How is Crossfit and HIIT different? And does Crossfit affect my goal to shred/cut? Crossfit makes me strong and I LOVE how it makes me feel after a workout. But if I'm being honest, I want to look good, too. What is the happy medium? Thanks guys! Looking forward to trying your coffein + BCAA! Taria (pronounced like Daria the cartoon) ——————————————— Podcast Topic  Today we have on a special guest Paul Revelia from Pro Physiques. Say what you say about muscle growth in trained people for strength, here it did not augment strength. Say what you say about doing more exercise volume, here it did not augment strength. Say what you say about having “greater potential” to increase strength, here it did nothing. Say what you say about having “greater practice” with movement, here it did nothing. For strength, specificity is king…not muscle growth…and certainly not exercise volume.   “Our results suggest that the specificity of exercise, as opposed to exercise volume or muscle growth, are responsible for the magnitude of training-induced increases in 1RM strength. Additionally, the performance of familiarization sessions to eliminate the learning effect associated with 1RM testing is likely inappropriate. Therefore, individuals looking to increase 1RM strength should focus on the principle of specificity by practicing the 1RM test, and strength improvements are unlikely to be augmented by additional exercise volume.” j     ———————————————   Listener Question of the Day   If you have a question you would like us to answer for you submit it on our website: www.newyorkmuscleradio.com/listenerquestion   Question –   Listener from Vancouver BC Canada   Found your podcast through the iTunes and been enjoying ever since. Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Google Play | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast Topic(s) Why does Scouting use the fleur-de-lis as its symbol? Wasn't the organization founded in England? Don't laugh; that's a question we've gotten before, and probably will again. At some point, a curious Scout — or their parent — will want to know just why Scouting the world over uses the symbol that it does. Ken and Colin take a look at the history of the fleur-de-lis symbol, from ancient history to its adoption, by Baden-Powell, as the symbol of the Scouting movement. Question to the Listener: If we didn't have the current logo, the fleur-de-lis, what would be an acceptable logo for Scouting?Other Links The Scouting Pages Scouts Canada's new Scouter Manual - A Scouter's Guide to the Canadian Path The 1911 Boy Scout Handbook for the Boy Scouts of AmericaShout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. Lord Robert Baden-Powell created the Cub Scout concept in order to provide younger boys (under the age of 11) with an opportunity to experience Scouting, and then one that wasn't just a “watered down” version of Scouts. Ken, Colin, and Ted discuss this and some other aspects of the history of Cub Scouts, and reflect on recent changes to the Cub Scouts program made as a result of Scouts Canada's new Canadian Path.Shout-Outs Adam and Anna, who recently got married. The Queen's Venturer Award is the capstone award for Venturer Scouts, and can almost be thought of as the Canadian analog of the Eagle Scout rank. Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on Google Play | Subscribe on Android | Like Us on Facebook | Follow Us on Twitter----more----Podcast Topic(s) Ken and Colin discuss the Queen's Venturer Award (good historical information, but out-of-date requirements), the Top Section Award for Venturer Scouts. Under the new Canadian Path program that Scouts Canada has launched, the requirements for the award have changed significantly, especially since one of the principal requirements is the completion of a meaningful service project at the local, national, or international level. Venturer Scouts are youth aged 14-17, and it is generally understood that one has up to a year after the end of one's time in Venturers to complete the requirements of the Queen's Venturer Award. As such, achieving the award can be thought of as the equivalent of achieving Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts of America.Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. Medvents receive increasingly advanced medical training over the course of the program. Their training is put to good use providing volunteer First Aid support at Scout camps and charitable events.” Colin is absent this week, as is Brian, but we are happy to be joined by Erik Atkinson, one of the advisers of the Northern Lights Medical Venturers Company; we discuss the history of MedVents, and what this Vocational Scouting program entails. Also referenced in this episode: “Medvents.ca is a site maintained by the 1st Downsview Group which provides more information on Medical Venturers.”Shout-Outs Firstly, a shout-out to Mark Burge, who interacts with us on Twitter now and again. And to Ken Rachynski as well, who thanked us last week for linking a story about how to choose a good knife. Two additional shout-outs go out to Home Depot and Cashway Lumber, the latter in Leander, Texas. Home Depot gave Trevor — the son of podcast contributor Brian — a very steep discount on his first purchase of materials for his Eagle Scout project. And Cashway Lumber gave Trevor an almost 2/3 discount on the remainder of the supplies needed for the project. Send Feedback Email Us | Leave Us a Voice Message | Follow Us on Twitter | Like Us on Facebook | Leave Us a ReviewMusic Galizur, by John Zorn and the Dreamers

How can you prepare your home and your family for emergencies? How do you have the discussion about what to take, in an evacuation situation, and what to leave behind? So, whoever did that: a shout-out to you!And we'd also like to give a shout-out to Kelly Bruce, who sent us a message on Facebook. Our apologies, Kelly; we weren't able to bring Brian on board for this episode, so we weren't able to set up a compare-and-contrast discussion concerning Kub Kars and the Pinewood Derby. But that's coming soon!Podcast Topic(s)This week, Ken and Colin discuss an important facet of effectively running a Scout group, regardless of what section it is or what the ages of the youth are. That facet is communication between the leaders. And in addition to stressing how important it is to have an effective communication channel between all your leaders that all of them are willing to participate in, we touch on the need for a succession plan in your group's leadership structure, and also emphasize the benefits of planning weeks or months worth of events in advance. Also, as promised, you can find some information about Scouts Canada's Scouters Five concept here, and here.MusicGalizur, by John Zorn & The Dreamers
