Hi, I'm John VK4JPM, Secretary of the Darling Downs Radio Club. It's Sunday 19th of January and it's already only 22 sleeps away from our meeting on the second Monday of February. Bruce VK4MQ has a passion for Fox Hunting, and he's champing at the bit to show you why and how that happened. Not only is Bruce bringing along some of his home-brew foxes so that you can see what one looks like up close and personal, but he's a big fan of the cheap DIY directional antenna. There's lots more to fox hunting than just a transmitter and a receiver - although those are a big help. It's also helpful to have a bit of technique, both as a hunter or as the fox, and Bruce will let you in on hints, tips, and winning strategies that you can use in either role. This is how Bruce gets to talk about the nuns and the beat-up sedan. Bruce has promised to bring along some raw materials and will build a directional antenna on the spot. Robert Thomson VK4TFN here. REDFEST 2025 will be held on the 12th April 2025 The Theme will be "Fun on HF" We have a new venue. REDFEST 2025 will be held at the Deception Bay North State School in Old Bay Road Deception Bay. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. In the past week, my part of the world has seen the conclusion of one of the biggest gatherings on the Fraser Coast. Maryborough was the host town for the Scouting Jamboree displayed as AJ25 on the patches and advertising. The last time this event was held in Maryborough, I was lucky enough to be able to participate in the amateur radio station that was on site. Sadly band conditions during the day were not the best and very few scouts were lucky enough to experience ham radio as they circulated around the activities. At night, the Scouters who were amateurs were much more successful and we would catch up with their successes when we returned the following day. I have not heard how the activities went this year but hopefully with band conditions more favourable there was plenty of action to spur enthusiasm in the hearts of the scouts who ventured into the amateur radio station. My participation has been limited to driving past the venue and following items presented in the media except for one activity. I do a weekly shop for the household and in that first week the streets and shops of Maryborough were illuminated by the bright Jamboree shirts of people attending to purchases in town and sight-seeing the historical town. What really came across to me was the courtesy and general good behaviour of the scouts. We are all used to the slightly frenetic pace at which people of this age like to live life and the fact that chasing the moment can overtake consideration for people around them. With these young people there was a unity and alertness which we would associate with people involved in the scouting movement. I have never had so many bodies defer to my travel along supermarket aisles and even apologise if they thought I had been hindered. I am left with the feeling that we amateurs are lucky to have an association with the Scouting movement and where we can we should offer assistance to our local groups. There is the hope that some of those people working to get their badges in various skills which align with amateur radio can take the further step of joining the radio fraternity as a complementary activity. Later this year, there will be the opportunity to participate in the JOTA/JOTI activities but in the meantime the opportunities remain for closer liaison with Scouts, Guides and Joeys at local levels. Like all voluntary bodies, scouting depends on the support of people like you and me. If there is an opportunity take it and if not try and make it. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

One of SCARC's former members and Presidents has sadly passed away - Noel Des Jardins VK4NL passed away last Thursday October 16th. Noel made his first appearance at SCARC in 2003 when he was VK4ADJ, I met him at JOTA and he was in his element showing the Scouts and Guides just what radio was about with so much enthusiasm it was contagious. He also donated some copper tube to be used in making cavities for a 6m repeater which unbeknownst to us he was a real fan of the 6m repeater and he used to run the 6m net AKA the backblocks net every Friday night until he left for greener pastures in Hervey Bay. Noel was also an operator for the 20m travellers net for quite some time, it was always comforting to hear his voice on the radio when you were far from home. One of his favourite sayings was "You can never have enough aluminium and wire in the sky" Mate, you be sadly missed but never forgotten. Vale Noelly, Poppy Noel, Noel Des Jardins VK4NL I'm John VK4JPM with the Darling Downs Radio Club update for Sunday 27th of October. Last Sunday saw the end of the POTA Coast-to-Coast week with the band opening up nicely on Sunday Afternoon. On 20m contacts were made into the Canary Islands, Germany and Austria. Even if you're not registered with the POTA Website, if you had a contact with a POTA operator this weekend it's possible that there's an Award waiting for you when you do set up an account. Why not come along to the next club meeting, and find out from Dave VK4JPS how to set up an account? The important stuff again: the club net on VK4RDD every Sunday at 1000, ddrci.org.au for the website, and 11 November at 1900 for the next meeting. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. I trust all we Queensland amateurs are recovering from the contest. I don't mean the one running from the USA but the political blood sport we know as an election. Thankfully the remaining execution is in the USA and the amount of publicity and spruiking we are receiving will diminish next month and we hams can turn our thoughts to the serious matters of amateur radio. I was pleased to see the amount of posts appearing on social media during the JOTA/JOTI weekend with some clubs obviously enjoying the time spent with the members of the Scouting and Guiding communities. It seems that the coordination of announcements and publicity fell away, this year with NO opening address supplied for broadcast as has happened for many, many years. Like so many things that happen in life, this is an example that provides lessons for the future. It would seem that the gods of weather are reminding us of the seasonal changes with more storm activity reminding us that summer is almost upon us. You have probably noticed the adverts, put out by the Government, reminding us to have a bad weather plan. The meteorologists are positing that we will probably have the warmest nights on record, in the run up to Christmas. They are also projecting that we could have about 11 cyclones around the coast of Australia with maybe 4 of those crossing the coast somewhere. This may seem like a low number of tropical storms, this season, but the scientists are saying that the trends they are measuring are for more intense behaviours from these events. The word is that we need to prepare, as I have been reminding us all, for the worst and pray for the best outcomes. One thing that I seem to have been missing in the broadcast news is the amount of trouble that various parts of the world are experiencing with particularly storms and flooding. Even in NSW there has been damage in the mining city of Broken Hill which has caused extensive blackouts and which is the result of storm damage. As the fun of summer approaches, I hope we can all remain safe and prepared and enjoy the thrill of radio. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think….how about you?

To all the members of the Scouting movement who have shared with us this weekend, I trust that you have enjoyed the experience and leave the JOTA/JOTI weekend having learned some new things. I trust your time has been well spent and that we can join up again in 2024. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about what we do please call your operator, or your local radio club or contact wia.org.au. via the website. We would love to keep our friendship going. We have been reminded by the media and politicians of how much the cost of living has increased in recent times. Basic items like a packet of potato chips have jumped almost a dollar in shelf price at one discount grocery chain. That is just one example of a close to 30% jump in prices which I have observed. The weekly shopping basket is getting more and more filled with store brands and weekly special buys and lots of people will be looking as much to the news from the Reserve Bank, on Tuesday, as they will be barracking for a winner of the Melbourne Cup. There are the favoured sites that people go to seeking a good buy and radio amateurs maintain a reputation for being very prudent with their money. Now, I wonder how many radio amateurs have been paying attention to the selling prices of second-hand gear. The online sites that I look over tell a sorry tale to me. The prices that people are asking for consumer electronics, and brown goods, let alone recreational gear such as CB and ham radios seem to go up as they age. Of course, we all know that items over 25 years old are vintage and must of course be valuable and collectable just on the basis of their age. I have little doubt that some of the advertisers of these items also worry about the number of people joining the hobby. I have little doubt that many are amongst those who raised their hackles at the high cost of entry by way of exam fees and the price of new equipment. I also wonder how these sellers can reconcile the two attitudes and offer a more economic entry path to aspiring operators. There are clubs that support new amateurs with loans of equipment while a new person gets the feel of amateur radio. The Wireless Institute gives free membership for newly qualified hams if they apply but sadly the person using initiative and researching their own purchases, in the second-hand market, too often are shocked by the Gordon Gecko maxim of “greed is good.” Over many years I have heard stories of various money-making ruses used by so-called “reputable” amateurs. Buying books at a discount and charging full retail on delivery; picking up bargains at a Hamfest and adding a couple of hundred percent markup when they list the items online. I feel these practices are counterproductive to growing this great activity. It would be wonderful to see sellers adopt a reasonable price regime for older gear and demonstrate a welcome to new members. Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. What a succession of important events is happening over this week. The majority of voting age Australians have been to a polling place and possibly by now we all know the outcome of the Referendum. For we amateur radio enthusiasts there will be a range of local activities for JOTA/JOTI when we get to share our activities with the youth members of the Scouting movement as well as the many seniors with whom we have shared time, meals and campfires with in years gone by. It is a special time when people get to share their interests in a regular get-together and show what each can offer the community and each other. In showing what we can offer we also have the opportunity to understand the benefits that another body provides to its members and how it contributes to personal development. For the radio ham, the system is less structured and most of us will spend time fulfilling personal goals under our own direction. However when we look at what we do, it is the growth of knowledge and the experience that we gain in the vast field science, electronics, computing and manual arts that gives a sense of achievement and also knowing we have skills which can help others as well. So realistically we can check out how the two approaches blend together to nurture the same outcomes for the people involved. Whether we take the words of the Amateurs Code or the simple call of the Scout, both our aims are to Do Our Best. This naturally gets me to wondering how we can extend our contact with other parts of the community. The services that aid in times of trouble are so often in need of trained communicators. Whether these be local council Emergency Management Groups, rural fire brigades, the Salvation Army which supports those on the front lines and maybe the Red Cross. I am sure people can add to this list that applies to their neck of the woods. Then there are the activity clubs, horse riders, trail bikes riders, cross country 4 wheel drive contests or canoeing clubs. At times functions held by these bodies really benefit from having people who can pass information, handle messages and liaise with bodies also involved in the activities. The benefits of the social activities is that it allows radio and communications enthusiasts to practice and experiment with technology in a safe way that supports others... And the debrief and cuppa that follows is a great opportunity for getting to know people and befriend them as well. If people have caught up with the long range weather projections from the Bureau of Meteorology, they can feel some relief in that the summer cyclone season is expected to be less dangerous this season. On the other hand, the warmer weather and less rainfall will contribute to an extremely perplexing fire season. So it is not only the solar flares we need to look out for but also the safety on the ground for this summer coming. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think....how about you?
Scouting Burgemeester Welschen Meerhoven (SBWM) in Eindhoven will again participate in the annual JOTA-JOTI, the Jamboree on the Air and Jamboree on the Internet. This event will take place from Friday 20 October 8:00 PM to Sunday 23 October 2023, 1:00 PM. Since its founding in 2003, SBWM has participated in the JOTA. This year they celebrate the 20th anniversary. An FM transmitter will be active all weekend, so the Meerhoven area can listen on a portable or car radio. Programs are on air on 103.3 MHz in the FM band. Rob Hardenberg explains the set up and the plans for 2023 and gives an impression of previous JOTA's. The JOTA – JOTI is the largest global scouting event in which 2 million scout members from 174 countries participate annually. The purpose of JOTA – JOTI is to get in touch with other scouts. Here ideas are exchanged but also communicated with friends. The exchange of ideas is known in the world of scouting as Jamboree. Communication traditionally takes place via radio, but for several decades now also via the Internet. JOTA is an abbreviation and stands for Jamboree on the Radio and was first held in 1957. To be able to talk to each other, the help of licensed radio amateurs is called in who have a license to use some frequency bands and can therefore communicate worldwide using of transmitters and antennas. In addition to the JOTA, the JOTI was organized for the first time in 1995. JOTI stands for Jamboree on the Internet and has since been held together with the JOTA as JOTA– JOTI. During a JOTI, communication takes place via the internet, for example through chatting or online video conference. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcasts-4-brainport/message

Hello, I'm Geoff Emery, VK4ZPP, and I've been thinking. It has been a topsy-turvey week on the shortwave bands with the forecast solar radiation causing some very poor conditions if my monitoring has been anything to go by. This is one of the thrills or disappointments of the active peak in a sunspot cycle; the good conditions can be unbelievably good and the poor are something that is best forgotten. With about a month to go, the announcements of JOTA/JOTI are appearing on various internet platforms and hopefully, amateurs and radio clubs have been preparing for this annual event. Like us, the Leaders in the Scouting movement give up their time to participate in activities and we have that common understanding and bond in promoting jamboree events such as the one currently being run for the Cubs. However, the international nature of JOTA for radio amateurs gives us the opportunity to show the best of our pursuit in the various fields of STEM and at the peak of a sunspot cycle when recourse to the internet is not inevitable. I hope we are able to hold the traditions of joint activities between Scouting and hams to a once again successful outcome whether we work from our home shacks or from facilities provided by the Scouts. Then to move along to something that got me thinking this past week. I happened across a video on YouTube which showed the adaption of a mains-powered domestic TV to run on an off-grid supply such as we would use in our shacks, that is, a nominal 12V DC source. I was intrigued as I haven't looked behind the back cover of a modern flat screen recently. The unit was an internationally known European brand and the power supply circuit board had the pads and components installed ready for a plug to be inserted. It really was an elementary type of adaption but the techniques used in this video, I felt were far from the standards of safety required. A drill was used to put a hole in the metalwork holding the rear section of the TV. Fine, you say, but without covering the surface mount components below the hole, the swarf was allowed to fall over the electronics, a simple knot tied in it to prevent the wire from stressing the board connection. The freshly drilled hole wasn't filed smooth nor was an adequate cable clamp used. The reason I detail this story is that it provides a very good basis for safety presentations at clubs and training sessions. Whilst not directly addressed in the practical tests that many of us have completed it certainly is common sense to share what are proper standards when we dare to put our hands inside equipment and make modifications. We don't always need a guest to give a good presentation as so much material is available on the Internet. So will we take the opportunity to take the examples and help others see and understand what safety is about? I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think....how about you? -------------------------------------------------------------------* 2023 Social Scene Clubs are welcome to submit text with audio for this section VK - ALARAMeet2023 4/5 November in HOBART (luther8@bigpond.com) VK - WIA AGM held MAY 4-5 2024 in BUNDABERG. Nicholas James Gregory Watling VK4YT (and formerly VK2AWT, VK4AWT, VK1NW and VK4WT) went Silent Key in Cairns on Saturday 22nd October 2022 following recurring bouts of illness. RAAF Service Number O15612 as a pilot with a final rank of Squadron Leader with DFC awarded for Gallantry in Vietnam on 31st October 1968, Service as a pilot with QATB Aerial Ambulance out of Cairns, Service as a pilot with Royal Flying Doctor Service Cairns Base on retirement as Chief Pilot, once retired 7000+ hours on watch with Cairns Coast Guard and all the time building a wealth of knowledge about all manner of transmitters and receivers, sharing that knowledge with hams and museums across the world and getting some really tricky bits of equipment on air. For many, he was the go-to person when they had an equipment conundrum. Nick was a member of the Tablelands Radio and Electronics Club, a former member of The Townsville Amateur Radio Club, a former President of the Cairns Amateur Radio Club and participated in events with the Tablelands Radio Group. When travelling Nick was a regular on the Travellers Net aeronautical mobile and did the occasional 2m contact from the radio shack with big wings. Many hams in the North were intrigued with the descriptions that Nick transmitted using equipment he had refurbished on-air during the yearly AM and CW on ANZAC Day events. This year the club loaned its IC-718 and FT-7700 for the weekend. James VK4FCAV reports various contacts were made via HF, VHF and Echolink. Plans are already underway for 2023. JOTA/JOTI also serves to promote amateur radio to new audiences with the hope that some join amateur ranks in the future. Well it is rather obvious and good manners say that one shouldn't state the obvious but the past week has been interesting with the weather systems bringing storms and lots of rain around the VK4 area. The south and central areas have had the threats of flooding abate only to see the Northern Rivers area of VK2 succumb to the heavy rainfalls. The hail that made thinking almost impossible as it clattered off the iron roof was a new experience in this location for us and the thunder and lightning have provided spectacle but not necessarily the thrills. Whilst this has been going on, the bands have been both good and bad and the electrical activity has raised the radio noise levels above the poorly suppressed hash from myriads of cheaper and non-certified bits of domestic electronics. Still, the nightly DX seems to continue in spite of the abundant storm activity. Such is the way with short-wave activity and we should benefit from more regular DX on the higher end of HF as we traverse the current sun spot cycle 25. Amongst the update emails from the ACMA was one this week announcing a beta version of a new access site for clients to check details and perform routine operations such as pay licence fees and update contact details. Although I have registered to receive the update emails, to use ACMA Assist, it is necessary to have an account which can be set up online. If you already have a digital ID it is a simple process but using other documents such as a driver's licence this process is simple to do and complete the process. As an aside, you have the option to download the Australia Post app and save your digital ID to your phone. This is a step in the right direction for anyone with internet and who is an ACMA client. Hopefully, this service will ultimately work as efficiently as those we read about serving overseas amateurs and maybe it will provide an incentive to modernise the largely manual licencing process that we currently are forced to use. With the spate of successful hacks of major private sector IT services, it is heartening to know that government sector systems seem to have better online security and so that shouldn't be a reason to delay improving client IT services. The time is moving on to when responses will need to be ready to go to the regulator concerning the Class Licencing proposals for the Amateur Service. Although the WIA committee is hard at work, it will benefit the whole cohort if as much thought goes into this as possible. Just as the changes almost 20 years ago have helped grow our numbers, the outcomes of this will define our pursuit for years to come. Please give it your best shot. If you have missed it, I would suggest you have a read and digest the rather chilling prognostications. Up to 11 cyclones around the coast are just the start. Being familiar with what may be in store will help us each prepare for weather outcomes in our area. Just on the topic of preparation, as the warmer weather seems to be stretching itself to cover the land, we should have ticked off the list of maintenance items for our stations and be able to sleep soundly knowing antennas will stay erected and surrounds are safe from flying objects or flammable items if we are liable to experience bush fires. A suitable container should have the basics for an emergency evacuation should that be possible where we live. Here we need to follow the recommendations of the emergency services to protect ourselves and one item that some may overlook is ensuring a minimum supply of food for 3 days is available to take if you have to evacuate or enough to cover the normal period of isolation from severe weather in your area. It seems awkwardly funny to be listing these precautions because so many people take themselves and their families on holidays and spend large amounts of effort in planning the adventure. The main difference is that we need to add the fact that in uncertain situations we have to prepare for the future. Money, food, fuel, identification papers and other documents such as bank cards and insurance details need to be available in case the worst ever happens. Here I can speak from experience with once having had my house burn down. Apart from the emotions surrounding loss, you then have to face dealing with establishing your identity and getting records replaced. I wonder how many of our clubs are preparing for the summer season when there are contests and good weather, we hope. Is there the possibility of engaging with the local community during this period when schools, colleges and uni are in recess? It is a strange time with the spread of 7-day shopping and in some places, extended hours of trading. Some people get to travel and others are tied to their usual income source. Grandparents can be overwhelmed with visiting youngsters and families can be embroiled in the festive spirits in December. For people enjoying the spirit of JOTA/JOTI, there has been an opportunity to canvas the interest of participants in possible holiday period activities. At the other end of the age spectrum, many club and activity groups will be taking a break during the mid-summer as well. Is it worth checking if people from those areas would like to experience some ham radio activities? Now is the time to check these things out and prepare as already the retailers are promoting the tinsel and fattening foods that we associate with Christmas. I'm Geoff Emery VK4ZPP and that's what I think....how about you? ---------------------------------------------------------------------* 2022 Social Scene VK4 - Nov 5 Tannum Sands Gathering with Gladstone ARC (vk4zz) VK4 - GOLD COAST HAMFEST Nov 13. @ Country Paradise Parklands TO SUPPLY QNEWS ITEMS:- Send SCRIPT to qnews@wia.org.au and send audio to http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/upload/ If you would like to submit club news items for inclusion in QNEWS broadcasts, please email your item in text to:- qnews@wia.org.au THEN submit audio:- To submit the audio email qnews@wia.org.au and ask for the current password then read "how to submit items" on the weekly news page at http://www.wia.org.au/members/broadcast/contribute/ Remember the sooner you submit audio material the more the likelihood of it being broadcast in the very next edition QNEWS. "Jamboree On The Air / Jamboree On The Internet" er verdens største spejderlejr.

Social distancing and self-isolation are, for now, the new normal. How can we keep Scouts engaged with their troops at a time like this? Podcast Topics Ken and Colin practice a little social distancing this week, and make use of the podcast’s Discord server (which you are encouraged to join; it’s likely we will be using it to record episodes for the next few months, and we’d love to have new voices join in) for recording purposes. The topic this week is, as noted in the episode summary, how to enable the youth of your Scout group to continue their Scouting adventure whilst also engaging in the social distancing and/or self-isolation that has become so critically important in recent weeks. One way Scouters can foster this — and, no doubt, provide parents with some go-to activities to hand to their children while they themselves adjust to e.g. working from home for the first time — is through sending out periodic (daily, weekly, other) challenges. You can grab the Scout from Home challenge that Ken issued to his Cub Scouts and Scouts, for example...or, if your group has a social media presence, you could issue daily challenges via posts thereto. It’s also worth mentioning that ScoutLink will be hosting a special edition of Jamboree on the Internet (JOTI). This will take place from April 3rd until April 5th; you can find out more at the ScoutLink website, or at the JOTA-JOTI website. And on the subject of enabling youth to connect electronically, several Scout groups have been enjoying some success using Zoom (a free videoconferencing solution) to host periodic video “check ins” with their youth. Another option for enabling this sort of connection, using a technology that many Scouts probably already make use of daily, if not weekly, is Discord; setting up a Discord server is free, and servers there allow for text, audio, and video chats. There’s even a semi-official Scouting-focused Discord server, run by a New Zealand organization called ScoutWired. Shout-Outs As always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. In addition to doing a brief “State of the Podcast” to kick off 2018, we discuss how to prepare for a camp focused on JOTA/JOTI. Now isn't a bad time to begin preparing! ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Ken and Colin discuss the state of the podcast in this, the first episode of 2018. Most notably, we were informed by our podcast host, Podbean, that we were one of their Top 10 podcasts in the Government & Organizations category. So thanks to everyone who has tuned in; we look forward to bringing you more Scouting content in 2018. Also, Regan Coyne — who has appeared on the podcast a few times before — will be launching her Guiding-focused podcast next month. Its title is This Guiding Light of Mine, and you can find out more about it on Facebook. This week's episode is in response to a question from Scouter Glenn, who asked the following back in October: Our Scout group has never done JOTA/JOTI. What prep or precommunication was required? What activities were planned for the day? Based on our experiences in setting up a JOTI event in 2016, and contributing to a JOTA/JOTI camp in 2017, we attempt to provide an answer. Shout-Outs Our first shout-out goes to Jonathan, who left a review of the podcast on Facebook: Lots of great content about Scouting. It's interesting to follow the podcast from the beginning, as they started during the change to the Canadian Path. It will be interesting to revisit some subjects in future episodes and compare with older episodes. I've learned a lot by listening to all the content. They do a great deep dive when covering a topic. Always gets me in the Scouting mood. I regularly recommend this podcast to others in the movement. And Mark wrote in to follow up on something we discussed with Nancy a few episodes ago: Hello! I am a Cub Master in TN and just started listening to your podcast. I have become interested in getting a “Scout Express” kit, but cannot find them online. Do you know if this is an item that is specific to Canada, or can I find it here? Any information will help; thanks. As it happens, the “Scout Express” — also known as Scout Trucks, in Scouts Canada — can be ordered online from the Scouts Canada Scout Shop. However, we may work with Mark to just send him a truck directly. And, as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. (Unfortunately, circumstances — notably, the weather! — dictated that we weren't able to meet up in person; Justin is a resident of Dublin.) The discussion ranges over a few different topics; we start by discussing JOTA-JOTI and end up discussing the Boy Scouts of America and their recent decision to allow female membership in Cub Scouts in 2018, followed by membership in all sections the year after. How has your exposure to Scouts from other countries influenced your worldview? ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Podcast Topics Before we dive into the meat of the topic, Ken and Colin take a quick look at the state of the podcast, and note that Scouting Stuff has been running for two years now! That's right; our first episode was published on October 8, 2015, or just over two years ago. And here we are now, nearing our fiftieth episode, and doing very well indeed; at least on the Canadian iTunes charts, Scouting Stuff got as high as #66 on the top 100 Government & Organizations podcasts last week. Also, Scouter Ken is indeed headed to Cork, Ireland, and will be there between the 16th and 25th of October. If you'd like to get in touch — whether to hang out, invite him to meet your Scout (or Cub, or Beaver) group, or to turn in a guest appearance on a Scouting Stuff episode — please do get in touch. Today's topic is more of an opinion piece; Ken and Colin discuss the ways in which their worldviews have changed from having met Scouts from different countries. And though we don't ask it in the podcast proper, we would love to hear your stories about this topic as well: how has meeting Scouts from around the world changed your perspective? The upcoming JOTA-JOTI weekend is also discussed, albeit briefly. Shout-Outs This week, we've got a shout-out for Nancy Nobles, who wrote in: On my vacation last week we went to the Scout Shop in Windsor, Ontario. It was a great experience. I would never have done that if not for your show. We got lots of patches. Thank you for all you do. Keep it up.If you ever have questions on the American Cub Scout program, I would be happy to help. I have over 9 years experience. Our apologies, Nancy; we weren't able to get you on this episode. But we will be in touch soon; we'd love to discuss the differences in Cub Scouting that exist between the US and Canada. And as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. There are a lot of neat natural ways to find your direction of travel, assess the weather, and whatnot. Hopefully, you never end up lost! But if you do...what is the best thing to do? ----more---- Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher Follow-Up From Previous Episode Listener danteplay sent in his thoughts on our last episode: I'll try to keep it short but I had ideas through the entire Podcast. Great topic! My feeling is the Canadian Path is not jut for the youth. It is also up to Scouters to choose their own path. That may mean turning down some things. Volunteerism is a learned behavior in my opinion. I learned it from my Dad. My pack-aged son is learning it from me. The younger youth also need a proper life balance. My son is a cub helper in colony. He's in pack of course. Swim lesons and house league basketball take up another couple of nights. Yesterday he told me he signed up to be a lunch monitor with the younger grades. He was sad that he couldn't sign up for more than he did due to a conflict with track and field at school. I had to tell him it's ok to not volunteer for everything. We couldn't agree more. Knowing what you can commit to be involved with, and knowing what the limits of your involvement should be...these are both important things. Podcast Topic(s) Ken and Colin sit down to discuss a great article at Atlas Obscura that talks about various natural methods and signs that can be used to find your way (at least in the Northern Hemisphere), or to spot impending weather changes. And then we talk a bit about what to do when one gets lost outdoors. Also, here’s a photo of the Cub Scout handbooks that are mentioned in the episode, which finished printing just before this episode went up: Shout-Outs The first shout-out goes to Dan, who sent along his thoughts as a new listener: Hello,I found your podcast a few weeks ago and have enjoyed the past couple episodes. I am now going back to review previous episodes. You are doing a great service to Scouting, Thank you! And a second shout-out goes to Matt, from Australia, who wrote in again: G'day GuysI am really impressed with what your podcast brings to my knowledge of the world of scouting. It's great because I have so many different ideas that are outside of the resources available to me in Australia. My Scout den is running JOTA JOTI this year and I would love the chance for my Joeys to be able to talk to some Canada Beaver. Could you please let me know what you have planned and maybe we could make a contact. Also if you ever what to talk about how we do things down under I would be keen to talk.CheersWobbegongMatt Joey leaders have native animals for scout names Thirdly, a shout-out for Paul, who is new to Scouting, and who had a popcorn question: Just started scouting (Scouter Paul of 10th Barrie) also the 10th Barrie treasurer. Went looking for a scouts podcast and found yours. So far great stuff. One question though how do I signup for the Scout/Square partnership to get the $1500 allowance? This is the link to follow for that: http://squ.re/ScoutsCanada17 Finally, as always, a big thank you to the folks at Scouting Radio for rebroadcasting Scouting Stuff episodes to their worldwide Scouting audience. In which the possibility of a youth in Scouts Canada using Minecraft to satisfy a requirement for the Tech badge is discussed. Also, Scouting Stuff is coming to Anchor.fm. Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher----more----Podcast Topic(s) This is a short episode, much of which is actually an excerpt from the other podcast that Ken runs. But that's okay; the discussion therein is an interesting one about the implications of the new Tech badge that Scouts Canada offers to Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts. Also, Scouting Stuff is getting on Anchor.fm. Look for tweets (@ssyskpodcast) with the #ListenIn or #Anchor hashtags, and join in the conversation!Shout-Outs Ken would like to give a shout out to DenLeaderPack432 and Scouter Brian from the 1st Polokwane Troop, both of whom he met last weekend during JOTA-JOTI. As the podcast turns one, we turn our attention to Jamboree On The Air/Jamboree On The Internet. Subscribe: iTunes | Google Play | Android | TuneIn Radio | Stitcher----more----Podcast Topic(s) What is JOTA-JOTI? Well, according to the official website: “Jamboree-On-The-Air and Jamboree-On-The-Internet (JOTA-JOTI) is an official international event of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). JOTA-JOTI is a youth programme event intended for young people in Scouting of all ages. The purpose of JOTA-JOTI is to enable and encourage Scouts around the world to communicate with one another by means of amateur radio and the internet, providing a fun and educational Scouting experience and promoting their sense of belonging to a worldwide Scout Movement.” JOTA-JOTI takes places this year on October 14th, 15th, and 16th. The official website has some basic rules for participation by radio, and over the internet — which includes both netiquette and online safety. It is recommended that participants use the official, moderated IRC channels (and TeamSpeak channels) provided by ScoutLink. If you'd like to sign-up for JOTA-JOTI (there's still time!), you'll first need to create an account at Scout.org. Then, visit this page. More Ways to Listen: Scouting Stuff is now available on TuneIn Radio and Stitcher. It's Been a Good Year: The Scouting Stuff domain name was registered on or about October 6th, 2015; our first episode went live on October 8th, 2015. So as of this Saturday, the podcast is one year old!Shout-Outs A big shout-out and Happy Birthday! to Scouts Mexico, who are celebrating their 90th year as an organization this month. Hats off to the Scouts of Mexico, for nearly a century of Scouting spirit and good turns.
