It never fails. Every year your kid will forget their lunch or their homework. You are running through the house in the morning yelling (so everyone can hear you) that it's time to go, as your youngest whines from his room that he can't find his shoes, and your daughter says that her library book is missing and she absolutely can't go to school without her library book on library day. Sigh! The frustration builds and you decide that the only way to avoid this mess is to remind & nag your kids or do just do it all yourself. And you are so very wrong mama! In this episode, we share with you our 4 ways to make sure your kids remember everything they need for school this year (without you reminding them or doing it for them!). We're makin' it NICE this episode with our fave L-Word reviewer and writer, Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya! But we're not dyking out about Gen Q. We're dissecting the Real Housewives franchise for all the queer and queer-coded content it regularly serves up. These ladies are acting gay AND doing crimes, so what's more queer than that? And they're not just acting gay, some franchises have queer women amongst the cast. Also, we manage to make comparisons to The L Word. We make the case that The Real Housewives is a great show to watch with your significant other. Plus, we give our REAL gayest things from Provincetown. I am so excited to be welcoming my friend, Lisa Yu to the show today. Lisa has always dreamed of being a writer and publishing books. She has a master's degree in Elementary Education and taught kindergarten and first grade for 6 years before becoming a full-time mom. She believes in treating children with respect and dignity, and embracing their curiosity of the world. They should be given the facts and guided to understand the world around them, for one day they will be adults. She feels passionately about sharing this message and hopes that her books will make a positive impact on children and their families. The goal of My Parent's Job Children's Series is to showcase jobs and explain them on a level a child can understand. The books are meant to bridge the gap faster in a child's understanding of why a parent leaves for an extended period of time to go to work, (especially where professions keep parents away at night), and what they are doing during that duration. It is expressed in a way where a child feels proud of their parent, and come to an understanding that it's something they must do, while loving them all the while. Follow Lisa on Instagram (@myparentsjob) or Facebook (My Parent's Job Children Series). In today's episode of You Are The Superhero, we are discussing how to reprogram your mind for extraordinary abundance. You have been taught that the way to wealth is through action, “work hard and you'll be successful”. The truth is that doesn't work for most people, because we were not taught how to set and achieve goals. Damian also discusses creating affirmations in your daily life to reprogram your life for more success. Focus on that desire and find a good place to feel what it would be like to live in that success. Today's episode will bring you positive ideas for anyone wanting to manifest a successful life. In this episode, we talk with Einat Nathan, a parenting expert, counselor, and author from Israel. Her first book Haimsheli, was a bestseller across all categories in Israel, making her a national celebrity. The book resonated because mothers read it, cried and smiled, and discovered a way to look at their children as independent people, not solely as an extension of who they are or as a calling card. Einat helps parents with a fresh approach to parenting and is the parent to 5 teenagers. Her book My Everything, was recently translated into English. We discuss the difference in parenting expectations in the US versus Israel, how the way our parents raised us affected our thoughts on parenting and what pressures we face as parents in this digital age. No matter where you fall on the spectrum (even you, straights), or not matter how popular you are, we've all had moments (or lifetimes) of being the odd one out. Comedian Carly Montag (Alone At Lunch podcast) joins us to talk about the many times she felt like an outsider amongst friend and teammates. Why was she so dedicated to wearing overalls? Also, why are people so weird to redheads? And most importantly, how was she so gay without realizing it? But all these instances of feeling different shaped her into who she is today. And that's someone who can't stand to be in a room with another redhead. And also a proudly out comedian and podcaster who is finally living their authentic life. When was the last time you celebrated the things that make you different? Plus, Carolyn talks about her failure to communicate with ghosts, and Melody longs for a simpler, happier time: 2015. When we over-parent and rescue all the time, we're depriving our kids from living. Life is truly an active verb. And when we focus on making things easier in the short term, we deprive our kids of the skills they need for the long haul. In this episode we speak with Julie Lythcott-Haims who is the New York Times bestselling author of the anti-helicopter parenting manifesto How to Raise an Adult, Real American, and her newest book, Your Turn: How to Be an Adult. Julie believes in humans and is deeply interested in what gets in our way. She shares with us how parents can sometimes get focused on the short term gains and lose sight of those long haul parenting goals. And in the end, it's our kids who pay the price. Is it us, or is the queer community changing more rapidly than in the past? Comedian and writer Allison Reese joins us to talk about the affects of the internet and the passing of time on our perceptions of the (Kamala Harris voice) community. Where is queer culture created? Is the infighting as bad as Twitter makes it seem? Are we being so inclusive that we're better off just excluding cis straights? When will the meat eaters face their moment of reckoning? We also ask the very important question, "is it safe for cartoons to come out of the closet?" Plus, Carolyn and Melody try to pick their gayest moment that wrapped up a memorable pride month. Why do so many of us moms feel guilty asking for help? You know, like it's a burden to ask someone for help or something that we need (love, support, so on)? Defining yourself as someone who can “do-it-all” only sets you up for failure and guilt. Why? Because if you can't “do-it-all-by-yourself” then somehow you are “less than”. What if we told you that we can live better, happier, and simpler lives by making a few adjustments to how we think about self-care? Would you try it? In this episode, we are talking with Dr.Christine Koh. She's a music and brain scientist turned multimedia creative! She spent a decade in academia, during which time she was awarded prestigious fellowships from the National Institutes of Health to fund her Ph.D. research at Queen's University and joint-appointment postdoctoral fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, and the Massachusetts Institutes of Technology. Christine was about to become a professor when she decided to hang up her academic spurs in favor of more flexible and independent ventures. We discuss what so many of us view “protective self-care” as and what it really needs to be to actually benefit us in the long run. So many moms worry about whether or not we are giving enough attention to our kids, especially when they outnumber you! We feel guilty for spending what may seem like a lot of time with one child and not enough with the other. But is that really happening? Are we really giving some of our kids (often the younger ones) the raw end of the deal? In this episode we talk with Lynn Berger, a writer and journalist in the Netherlands, covering care, and author. As the care correspondent for online journalism platform De Correspondent, she writes about the various forms care can take, what it does for us, and what we need in order to take good care. Lynn took her thoughts and experiences of being a second child, combined them with her own thoughts as she prepared to, and had her second child, and rounded it all out with what the research says on the subject and put it together in her book, Second Thoughts: On Having and Being a Second Child. JoAnn, Brie, and Lynn talk about their own experiences both as children with siblings and with their own children and the guilt that we face trying to give each child what feels like is never enough time. Take off those rose-colored glasses because we've got comedian Morgan Miller (UCB) back on the pod, and we're dyking out about red flags. What's the different between a red flag and a dating preference? How do you reveal your own red flags? And should you call them out in others? Are queer women worse off than most when it comes to being deterred by red flags? Or is everyone just a sucker for love? We talk about all of this, plus astrological signs, healing from a traumatic breakup, and casual sex. Want more from Morgan? Check out her new podcast, Famously Dumped. Also, Carolyn and Melody find gayness in their return to in-person comedy. Finally, we end with a listener question that may as well have been written on a red flag. -Get extra content EACH WEEK, Ad Free episodes, support the pod, and get to know other listeners by joining our Patreon community.
