Welcome back to the Video Store Podcast, where we dive deep into the shelves of the past to bring you hidden gems and nostalgic hits from the golden era of film. In today's episode, which we are released a few days early, we're celebrating the enchanting and whimsical world of Irish or Irish-adjacent cinema, with a touch of the fantastical and the downright bizarre. Whether you're a lover of heartfelt tales, classic folklore, or intergalactic adventures with a green twist, we've got something special for you. So, grab your favorite snack, and let's journey to the Emerald Isle and beyond through the magic of movies.First up on our list is "Waking Ned Devine" (1998). This charming film transports us to a tiny Irish village where Ned Devine has won the lottery. There's just one little problem—Ned can't claim his winnings because he's passed away from the shock of his good fortune. What follows is a hilarious and heartwarming plot by the villagers to claim the prize money, proving that community and cleverness can go hand in hand. It's a feel-good movie that captures the spirit of Ireland and its people, making it a must-watch for anyone in need of a good laugh and a warm heart.Next, we step back in time to "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" (1959), a delightful journey into Irish folklore. This classic film tells the story of Darby O'Gill, a wily old storyteller who matches wits with the king of the leprechauns. With its enchanting special effects (revolutionary for its time) and captivating performances, including a young Sean Connery in a singing role, this movie is a magical experience for all ages. It's a perfect pick for families or anyone who loves a good fairy tale.Shifting gears to a more grounded story, "The Van" (1996) gives us a slice of life in Dublin. Directed by Stephen Frears, this comedy-drama follows two friends who decide to start a fish and chips van during the 1990 World Cup. It's a story about friendship, dreams, and the ups and downs of starting a business. The film captures the gritty, yet hopeful spirit of Dublin in the 90s and is a testament to the resilience and humor of its people.Lastly, we venture into the wild and wacky with "Leprechaun 4: In Space" (1996). Yes, you heard that right—in space! This horror-comedy takes the traditional Irish myth to new heights, quite literally, as the malevolent leprechaun seeks his bride on a distant planet. It's a cult classic that blends sci-fi, horror, and absurd humor. This movie is definitely not for everyone, but if you're in the mood for something completely out of left field, it's an entertaining watch. That wraps up our cinematic journey to Ireland and beyond. Each of these films offers a unique taste of Irish culture, mythology, and the undeniable charm that comes from storytelling on the Emerald Isle. Whether you're in the mood for laughter, adventure, or just a good old-fashioned tale, these movies are sure to enrich your movie-watching experience. Thanks for tuning into the Video Store Podcast. This is the perfect movie for St. Patrick's Day for me. It's hilarious, whimsical, charming, funny, delightful, very well written, and completely sucks you in. It's one of my all time favorites, and I'm kind of mad at myself for going so long between watching it the first time and seeing it again. Alicia, Erin, and the cats joined me for this episode. We were so tired when we recorded this, but it was completely worth it. Listen as we marvel over the scenery, we laugh at the characters' antics, and Alicia gets really disturbed by the ending.

Movie Meltdown - Episode 479 This week we are joined by semi-regular cast member... and at this point, a member of the Meltdown family - DOUG JONES!! And this week Doug joins us for our Sofa Theater discussion of Waking Ned Devine. And while we realize both the guest and the cast seem to crash through people's boundaries, we also address… Count Orlok, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Better Things, What We Do in the Shadows, the AFI awards, Guillermo del Toro, Star Trek: Discovery, Mira and Paul Sorvino, the Hallmark Channel, The Shape of Water, Christina Ricci, coming up with a caper, The Candy Shop, the tubby blue guys… with weird white wigs, Ann B. Davis, squeezing faces, movies with rubber monsters in them don't often make it to a 13 nomination night at the Oscars, I've never seen a surge like this last year ever before, being a criminal mastermind, Mimic 3, you’re just not watching it right, it should inspire whatever you need that day, thriving in life, snitches get… thrown into the ocean, I’ll be your Joan Rivers, Falling Skies, Skin and Bones, you’re so creepy in that, The Office...meets Big Brother...meets Nosferatu, ten million per episode, the Morlocks and the Eloi, hooking up with fish people, I think there should be way more wendigo movies, false fangs, huggles and face-cups, my IMDb page does scroll down to 165 credits now, watching that telephone booth sail into the air, not one - but two naked septuagenarians on a motorcycle, he’s very intense to talk to, I'll get me own bangers and mash, old crusty couple, shut up and take the payoff, marked for devouring, involuntary manslaughter, we’ll encase you in latex like every job you have, go-go-Doug-arms, creating matte shots off the original silent film, Beneath the Leaves, H. G. Wells and using fruity soaps! Spoiler Alert: Full spoilers for "Waking Ned Devine", so go watch the movie before you listen. “For me, creating a piece of art… it’s not up to the artist to tell you how to feel about it…”

Valerie opens our eyes to the principle of Progressive Complications as we analyze the hilarious 1998 British-Irish village comedy Waking Ned Devine. This sleeper hit was written and directed by Kirk Jones. Each week one of the Story Grid Editors—Jarie Bolander, Valerie Francis, Anne Hawley, Kim Kessler, or Leslie Watts—pitches a favorite film as an example of a significant story principle. Then we team up to debate whether it succeeds or fails, giving authors deep insight into story structure. Click here for the full show notes.

We've all settled down from the Oscars and are back into the grind of regular releases, and we've had two universally beloved in two weeks: Last week's "Get Out" and this week's "Logan." But maybe we shouldn't consider it that universally beloved, because, well, we're the low men on the totem pole for "Logan." Listen to us explain why. Then, in our Reboot section, we look back at two well-regarded comedies of the past: 1998's "Waking Ned Devine" and 1989's "The Burbs." We also start the show off with a special announcement. It involves polyps. Timestamps: 7:30 "Logan" 28:40 "Waking Ned Devine" 40:25 "The 'Burbs" We hope you enjoy. Let us know what you think @griersonleitch on Twitter, or griersonleitch@newrepublic.com. (We're doing a mailbag show after the new year, so send us questions.) As always, give us a review on iTunes with the name of a movie you'd like us to review, and we'll discuss it on a later podcast. Opening Song: "I Wipe My Ass With Wolverine Fur," The Dead Schembechlers Closing Song: "Let Me Clear My Throat," DJ Kool We miss Grierson already! Learn more about your ad choices. On this, our 250th episode, we celebrate not only over 250 hours of producing the equivalent of film discussion farts, we actually have a new release on farting to go with it. In SWISS ARMY MAN Paul Dano is inspired to live again by a farting corpse played by Daniel Radcliffe. This buddy comedy inspires us to find more life affirming dead bodies in film, so we present to you a double feature of Alfred Hitchcock’s THE TROUBLE WITH HARRY vs. WAKING NED DEVINE.

How is the content of Ruth reflected in the teaching of St. Paul and in the gospel narratives? Why, in Ruth, does it matter who is whose relative and who is connected to whom? Why do Richard and Fr. Marc make such a big deal out of biblical names? Why does Ruth prostrate herself in front of a man? Isn’t she the one making all the big sacrifices to support Naomi? Shouldn’t everyone bow to her? Who is this mighty Boaz, anyway? Is power always evil? Only for those whose mind can’t get past the person to see God’s function in operation. Richard and Fr. Marc discuss Ruth 2. Eleven years ago, the Ultima Codex's predecessor — Ultima Aiera — was launched. Some pretty wild stuff has happened since then.Subscribe on iTunes | Subscribe on StitcherIntroThe Parting Glass, as recorded by Shaun Davey for the Waking Ned Devine soundtrack.Podcast Topic(s)This episode is mostly off-the-cuff. Truth be told, I find it difficult to approach the issue of the Codex's (and Ultima Aiera's) anniversary, unless I spend weeks in advance preparing and revising (and re-revising) the text. I haven't had time for that this year, so this podcast episode serves as a stand-in for that. It's a particularly good episode, though, and I'd encourage you to listen to --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ssshpodcast/message
