On this week's Earthling Entertainment, Joe & Ryan come across the most outrageous Cryptid they've ever researched. The one-eyed bat creature known as “The Popobawa.” Then, is the government trying to bury recent UAP videos shot off the coast of Florida? We've got a spoiler free review of the new Hunger Games novel “Sunrise on the Reaping.” What is next for the “Friday the 13th” franchise? Can the shelved Warner Brothers film “Coyote Vs Acme” still get a theatrical release? Perhaps with some Ketchup, is our cheeky response. All this and a whole lot more on this unforgettable episode of Earthling Entertainment!

There is a cryptid in Tanzania that has been terrorizing the locals since the 1900's. No I'm not talking about the Popobawa this time, but rather a cryptid of the more feline variety. In a special episode inspired by the recent loss of our beloved intern/co-host Skitty we are covering the story of the Mngwa. This cat cryptid is said to be as large as a lion with leopard features, covered with gray fur that has black stripes. Join us for this week's episode and thank you for all the support. Enjoy!
For more wacky (and politically incorrect) conversations with myself and Shibble check out his podcast Uncle Monster's Spooky Time Fright Hour! I guested on their newest episode yesterday where Shibble, Ethan and I discussed the Scottish horse monster known as the Nuckelavee... as well as a lot of horse penises! Listen to it on: Episode 408: Nucklavees and Horse Dongs Featuring Special Guest, Vuk! =============== Huge THANK YOU!!! to Shibble from Uncle Monster's Spooky Time Fright Hour for spraining his ankles tap-dancing around the questionable issues I threw at him! Thankfully, he is not the editor of this podcast, so everything remained as is in all its hilarity!
This week we get deep into the historical context realted to a certain unfriendly cryptid. The Popobawa panic in the late 1900's had a lot more political and social issues tied to it then one may at first see. But this crytpid in Tanzania has a culture surrounding its especially frightining and violent nature. Tune in and a warning this is not a friendly creature. Off the coast of East Africa there is an Island called Zanzibar. Since the 1960's there have been reports of a cryptid that has been attacking people in the night. It is said to have wings of a bat, the body of a man and the desire to attack anyone who doesn't believe in it. If there's a way to stop it, I'm still on the search to find it, but I do have some potential solutions. So grab a drink, relax a little and enjoy a new episode of Campfire Adventures.

We have returned! Nate has returned from his long vacation and we are still tweaking the new equipment, it was a bit hard to do when we tried remote recording but we hope to get the best sound quality for our listeners and have it all tweaked in quickly. It doesnt seem to help that we record in a cardboard box under active railroad tracks, it makes for lots of background noise. Sp please just bare with us if it sounds a little off. But anyways, this week we have the Cactus cat which Nate found to humorous of a cryptid to pass up, it's definitely a unique little fella, then I follow that up with the Popobawa from the Tanzanian Islands! Though if all the legends are true we probably shouldn't be talking about him. It was definitely fun getting to get back to recording and we noticed something thats always been a bit strange and kind of funny to us. If we miss a week or two of recording its like we fall out of flow, and now we missed two months, its just a strange thing, almost a feeling of recording the first episode again. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/arcanumobscura/support
Dr. Thompson, Professor of African Cultural Studies at Uw-Madison, joins to discuss Popobawa discourse. Yes, today we will be talking about talking about monsters! Dr. Thompson's book "Popobawa: Tanzanian Talk, Global Misreadings" explores the use of a supernatural entity as a linguistic tool which allows individuals of different backgrounds to indirectly convey political issues, convey their personal authority, or even safely discuss sexual identity in an oppressive landscape. We also touch upon the role of international media in spreading and reshaping local folklore, the intricacies of Swahili language and culture, and the Popobawa as a trickster archetype. ====================== Huge THANK YOU!!! to Dr. Katrina Daly Thompson for agreeing to guest on the show, allowing the Popobawa to once more re-emerge in their life ❤️ Visit Dr. Thompson's website at katrinadalythompson.com Follow them on Twitter @putawaytheglobe Contact them via e-mail katrina.daly.thompson@wisc.edu ====================== Send us suggestions and comments to tracingowlspodcast@gmail.com Follow us on Instagram @tracingowls or Twitter @TracingOwls Check our Linktree: linktr.ee/darwinsdeviations Intro sampled from "Something strange lurks in the shadows" by Francisco Sánchez (@fanchisanchez) Sound effects obtained from https://www.zapsplat.com ====================== FURTHER READING: POPOBAWA IS DEAD! | Tanzanian Affairs Katrina Daly Thompson (2017): Popobawa: Tanzanian Talk, Global Misreadings. We have captured the most elusive cryptid: fortean researcher Cole Herrold! He sat down with us to discuss.. well... everything essentially! We go deep into the Ljubovija Phantom, mistakenly referred to as a Serbian Mothman, exploring the cultural context and sociological intricacies of the flying humanoid enigma which has been plaguing every continent for the past century. We share our views and perceptions of this entity, why helium balloons make us shit our pants, why horrific war crimes cause caped crusaders to fly around the skies of Serbia, and finally why bat-winged deities possess humongous erections (a topic we should go back to in another episode). Oh yeah... tangents! Old Saybrook Blockeheads! Veggieman! La Lechuza! Aswang! The Jersey Devil! Popobawa! We cannot possibly fill 2 hours with just the Ljubovija Phantom... so we teamed it up Avegers-style with every possible flying humanoid (and other random crap entities) out there so they may join forces and unite their amazing powers of... causing mass hysteria! Popobawa, also Popo Bawa, is the name of an evil spirit or shetani, which is believed by residents of Zanzibar to have first appeared on the Tanzanian island of Pemba. In 1995, it was the focus of a major outbreak of mass hysteria or panic which spread from Pemba to Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago, and across to Dar es Salaam and other urban centres on the East African coast.
This episode we bring you the cruel, bat-like shapeshifter(s) Popobawa that terrorised the Island of Pemba off the Tanzanian coast from the 60's up to as recently as 2007. This gruesome tale will have you clinging to your loved ones as we dive into the famous Popobawa hysteria of the time. Things only descend further as the next story takes you to Asamando, the underworld of the Akan people, and the tale of Kwasi Benefo, the man who ventured into death. ***Find us*** Website: rashaliap.wixsite.com/legendary Instagram: legendarypod Twitter: @Legendarypod1 Music: AShamaluevMusic Logo: Photograph by Rene Rauschenberger.

This week on MYTH, it's the story of Anansi, a trickster god from West African folklore. It's a tale about how we got stories in the first place, and it's one of my favorites. If you've never met Anansi before, you're in for a treat. His smartass wisecracks and his ability to be a pain in the ass to those in power make him spiritual cousins with Peter Parker, and he's appeared in at least a few Spiderman comics. Then, in Gods and Monsters, it's the Popobawa, a recent monster with an unfortunate way of waking you up at night.
