Mark 11:1-21Big Ideas- Jesus subverts the expectations of everyone- In order to understand why, we have to look at the Old Testament- Everyone had nationalistic, violent, xenophobic ideas of what the Messiah would do- They expected the Messiah to violently expel the "pagans" from the Temple- Instead, Jesus symbolically casts out those excluding outsiders- The message is that Jesus cares about earthly things - He is fixing politics and all the injustice we see. But he is doing it in a way that is upside-down of what we expect. Questions- Have you been told that Jesus isn't political? - How about the idea that Jesus doesn't care about earthly things, just spiritual ones?- If Jesus cares about politics and "earthly" issues, what does that change for how we should act as Christians? - Based on Jesus' unexpected interaction, what's an injustice around you that you can address in a radical new way?
READ: Acts 5.1-2 NLT 'But there was a certain man named Ananias who, with his wife, Sapphira, sold some property. He brought part of the money to the apostles, claiming it was the full amount. With his wife's consent, he kept the rest.' This is a chilling story. Ananias and Sapphira were not obliged to give all the money from their property sale to the apostles, but they made the false claim that they had done so. They lied. There's no getting away from it. They conspired together to trick the apostles and the result was that when confronted with their lies they both, one after the other, dropped dead. Given that everything seemed to have been going so well for the infant church this must have been a shattering moment. No wonder Dr Luke concluded the story by saying that great fear gripped the church and everyone else who heard what had happened. Lying is always serious. Facing up to what we have done may be painful but massaging the truth for our convenience is always destructive. It undermines trust and a relationship that is built on lies cannot possibly last long. Above all, we need to be truthful in our relationship with God. Nothing could possibly be more foolish than lying to him because he already knows the whole truth about us. Jesus said that he himself was the truth and that the truth would set us free. We need to face up to the fact that we are sinners and that we often let him down. I love the blunt straightforwardness of John in his letters. He hasn't got time to waste and so simply states that anyone who says that they have no sin is “fooling themselves and not living in the truth” (1 John 1.8). They are liars! But he goes on to share the wonderful news that if we own up to our sins, God is faithful and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all wickedness. The spine-tingling story of Ananias and Sapphira doesn't need to worry us if we stick to the truth. But if we don't, then their story is a timely warning. QUESTIONS: Have you ever struggled to tell the truth? PRAYER: Lord God our Father, I own up to the fact that I have sinned. Thank you that you are willing to set me free from my sins. Amen

READ: 1 Corinthians 12.14 and 16-17 NLT 'Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part. If the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body? If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything?' I love Paul’s sense of humour! He imagines a conversation going on within the body which is plainly ridiculous. It would be crazy if the ear were to complain that it wasn’t a proper part of the body because it wasn’t an eye. But, funny as it is, Paul is making a very serious point. He is talking about inferiority complexes and they get everywhere. Many people in churches look down on themselves. Some think they don’t count because they are only a Sunday school teacher, or only a cleaner, or only a newcomer. Paul wants to make it clear that, so far as God is concerned, there are no “only” people in the church. Every single person is vital. Paul recognises that there is another problem as well. And that’s the problem of having a superiority complex, and this is just as absurd. Paul imagines the eye saying to the hand, “I don’t need you” and the head saying to the feet “I don’t need you”. Not only would it be offensive for the parts of the body to talk to one another like that, but it would also be absolutely wrong – the eye does need the hand, the head does need the feet! In every organisation there tends to be a pecking order. Without much thought you can work out who are seen as the most powerful and important in the organisation and who are the least powerful and most unimportant. But Paul protests that in the church, just like in the body, everyone is absolutely crucial. We need to learn to treasure everybody and to value them highly because God has placed them within the church, and without them the church would be unable to function. QUESTIONS: Have you ever suffered from an inferiority complex or a superiority complex? If so how does this passage help you? PRAYER: Lord, help me to value the members of my church in the way that you do. Amen
The first step in building a personal brand is to recognize that it is not about you, it's about the perception others have of you. Before we dive into how to build a personal brand, let's define the phrase personal brand. What is a Personal Brand? Your personal brand is what others think, say, and feel about you. With that said, your first item of business when building a personal brand is to define how you want to be perceived. That doesn't mean, coming up with who you want to be based on what you see everyone else doing and being, but sharing your authentic self, your values, beliefs, passions, the skills you have, your why, and the level of service you want to provide. How to Create a Personal Brand – Step 1 The first step in creating a personal brand is to identify and define your specific personal brand. Every step of your journey to date is part of your personal brand. The successes, mistakes, failures, everything. These things are all unique to you and the business you want to form or have already created. Three Key Questions to Ask When Creating a Personal Brand Ask yourself these three key questions and create your personal branding strategy around them, with the focus on differentiating yourself from all others in your area of expertise. Who are you? What do you do? Why does it matter? Who you are matters to your audience. They need to know who you are in order to trust you. And they won't hire you until they trust you. Trust determines hiring practices. What you do also matters. Communicating what you do is key for reaching the right people who need the service you provide. Why does what you do matter to your audience? Mattering is marketing. You have to matter, or you can't market. Remember, marketing is communicating your brand story, so if your personal brand doesn't matter, you can't market it. All of the above factors can be evaluated as you write the mission statement for your business. How to Build a Personal Brand - Step 2 The second step is to define your ideal client avatar. Who is it that you are being called to serve? What is her name? What problems does she have that you can solve? Is she a mom and/or a wife? Does she have a corporate job or is she an entrepreneur? I want you to get very specific with who you serve. Example of My Ideal Avatar Jules is 45, she has worked in corporate for 20 years and garnered a lot of experience and expertise. She is burned out from working 9 to 5 and raising her family. Jules wants to start a business where she can have freedom with her schedule and have more family time while making an impact on the lives of her clients. She has a heart for service. Her biggest question is how to build a personal brand and launch a business. Jules struggles with confidence and is afraid to start something new and of the unknowns of entrepreneurship. She has tried to build a business by using her Google search bar. Purchasing on-line courses, joining Facebook groups, listened to podcasts, and has downloaded every free piece of information she could find online but now she's on information overload. She's wondering why these things are working for everyone else and not for her. Hiring a coach has been on the back burner because she doesn't think she can find the time and is hesitant to spend the money when there are so many free resources. However, she's spent money on “quick fixes”. And these quick fixes have cost her time, energy, and money, left her feeling overwhelmed and confused, and she is now on the brink of burnout. Jules is realizing that she needs help. Just like every one of us, she is not meant to do this alone. She wants someone to guide her step by step on creating a strategy that will work for her and her business, save her time, energy, and money so that she can create profit sooner than later. Jules loves to work hard and is ready and is finally willing to invest in herself and her dreams. Basically, Jules is me 5+ years ago! Your ideal client avatar is most likely you too. How to Build a Personal Brand – Step 3 The third step is to decide where and how you want to represent yourself as your personal brand. Do you need a website right away? Should you be on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or Tik-Tok? Where is your ideal client hanging out? The answers to these questions can be found by mapping out the questions your ideal client avatar is asking. What problem is it that she has that you can solve? Where will she be searching for those answers? Is she searching by hashtags or is she using Google? My ideal client is going to be using Google but is also hanging out on Instagram for inspiration, joining Facebook groups for free information and opportunities, and is using LinkedIn as a business networking tool. Keep it Real But let's be real. You can't be everywhere all the time. Choose the platforms that you love, and you know you'll be able to build relationships on. More about this when we talk about step 5. Key things to consider when building a personal brand and making decisions about what platforms you will be present on. Always have your face front and center. You must be present for people to get to know love and trust you. If you decide to go with a website, which I always recommend, your image should be on your home page, about page, and sprinkled throughout your website. Custom stock photos related to your business are also helpful, whether you are a product or service-based business. Your profile photo on your social media platforms should be the same or similar to the images on your website with your eyes and smile showing. Be consistent and create a cohesive feel for your brand so that you become recognizable and memorable. Doing so will help build a connection which will lead to relationships that will build trust. And by now you can probably repeat it without me…trust determines buying practices. How to Build a Personal Brand - Step 4 The fourth step in building a personal brand is to establish realistic goals. This is another mistake I made. I didn't set long-term goals when I first started my business and the reality is, that if you don't set long-term goals, you aren't moving the needle forward. For the first year of your business, map out the goals you have for building the foundation for success and attracting X number of clients to make X amount of money. Content strategy will be important for achieving these goals, from SEO to social media presence. Your goals for the second year should include your growth and additional steps you will take to achieve that growth. Will your business model shift in year two? Where do you anticipate opportunities for team expansion? You are now the CEO of your business. Can you hire someone to take over the responsibilities that you don't love or aren't great at and focus on your zone of genius? Not Too Long-Term I personally don't think setting a 5-year plan is necessary, but a two to three-year plan is important and it must include how you will continue to control what others think, feel and say about you as your business grows. You need to stay present no matter how your business grows, and it's important to stay authentic. You may change, your goals may shift, and your team may grow, these are things you can share to continue connecting with your audience and controlling the perception they have of you. In your budget, include professional branding photoshoots and updates to your website as you plan for growth and additional service options. Be sure that as you establish your goals and tasks within your business you are creating processes and systems so that in the event you can't be present, a team member or family member can step in and take over for a set period of time. How to Build a Personal Brand – Step 5 The fifth step is to start creating content and being present. In order to create, develop, and grow a personal brand you must be present. Creating content can be overwhelming but doesn't have to be. If you are an expert and passionate about what you do and the people you serve, the content is at your fingertips. Each client interaction you experience results in something you can use for content. Every question your answer is a question that others have too, and you can share to help more people. Not to overwhelm yourself, create a content strategy. This is where brand marketing comes into play. Refer back to step 4 – where will you be present? How often will you be present? How much time do you want to dedicate to creating content? Maybe your content strategy will look something like this: A weekly blog post Three Instagram posts 4 LinkedIn posts Or maybe you only want to create long-form content once a month so you write a blog post once a month but are on social media every day. Your content plan has to be something you are comfortable with and can commit to without becoming overwhelmed, frustrated, and burnt out. Every time you create a blog post you have content to share on social media. Do not reinvent the wheel. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose. Every piece of content you create must provide value, entertain, educate or inspire. The key is to focus on differentiation. Remember, you do not have to be on every platform. Start small. Focus on mastering one or two platforms. Once you have done that, start sharing the same content on other platforms. Chances are that your audience is not on every platform you are on and if they are, the algorithms are determining what they see and they are probably only seeing your content in one place. It never hurts for people to see things more than once. One it helps with recognizability and two it takes 14 to 21 times for someone to see something before it truly resonates. What a Personal Brand Is Not Note that I didn't mention creating a logo, identifying your color palette or typography. Why? Because they are what make up your brand identity. You first have to create a personal brand. Once you have created a personal brand and decided if you want to move forward with a website, create your brand identity. You will need the elements from your brand identity to design your website and for creating visual content on social media. The goal will be to use your brand identity elements to keep your brand consistent and cohesive across all of your platforms. Your messaging will be the core for consistency and your identity elements will be the mainstay for cohesiveness. Being consistent and cohesive is key to being recognizable, memorable, and for building trust. Who Needs a Personal Brand? One thing I want to add before I close out this episode. I often get the question who needs a personal brand? Everyone! Whether you are in corporate or an entrepreneur, you need and have a personal brand. Remember, your personal brand is the perception others have of you. It's what they think, say, and feel about you. That means you have to be mindful at all times of what content you put out into the world. That probably sounds a little dramatic, but it's a reality. Even if you are in corporate, people have thoughts on you as a person and those thoughts can influence your career path. Here is an article from Thrive Global that reiterates with my belief that everyone has a personal brand and should be controlling what other think, feel and say about them. Think about it. Have you ever Googled yourself? What comes up? Then ask yourself what you want to come up in search results if anyone else Googles your name. You can control, or at least influence what is found. READ: Luke 24.13-16 NLT 'That same day two of Jesus’ followers were walking to the village of Emmaus, seven miles from Jerusalem. As they walked along they were talking about everything that had happened. As they talked and discussed these things, Jesus himself suddenly came and began walking with them. But God kept them from recognizing him.' It’s getting towards the end of Easter Day and the light is fading as these two people trudge back home. It has been a strange time for them. Their hero Jesus died in horrifying circumstances two days previously and they now realise it’s time to go home. They have heard some women report that Jesus had risen from death, but they don’t know what to make of it. Suddenly a stranger starts walking alongside them and they chat over what has been happening. They have no idea that it is Jesus. Even when the stranger accepts their invitation to come back to their home, they still don’t realise that it’s him. This beautiful story will strike a chord with many of us. There have probably been many times when we have felt alone, but in fact Jesus was walking alongside us all the time. For some reason we didn’t realise that he was there. Perhaps we were distracted, tired, confused or angry. Or perhaps life just too busy, and we couldn’t spot Jesus amidst the busyness. For whatever reason we couldn’t see him, and we continued with the conviction that he had left us. Isaiah addressed a similar situation in chapter 40 of his prophecy. The people in Exile felt that God had abandoned them. But Isaiah puts them right. God was constantly with them. In fact, unlike them, God never went to sleep. He was always on the job giving strength to his people. “Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40.31) Whatever you are going through today you can be sure of this, whether you recognise him or not. Jesus is walking beside you. QUESTIONS: Have you ever been surprised to discover that Jesus is walking with you? PRAYER: Lord Jesus, thank you that you never leave our side. Open my eyes to your presence with me today, Amen.
Questions - * Have each person in group share their personal salvation story or how is was that they came to know Jesus. * Discuss what comment or part of the sermon stood out to each person. Did you learn something new? Did anything catch your attention? * This would be a really good opportunity to talk about the importance of being willing to share our faith with others. Has anyone in the group ever shared their faith with a friend? A stranger? *Do we have a role in talking about Jesus to people around us? What does it look like?

“So here you have all these women gathered at the Capitol, at a time where very few women serve in Congress, you have this monument that isn't just to quaintly acknowledge the 19th Amendment, it's a call to action for the next generation of women...and Congress is like let's take our pictures, let's celebrate, and then a couple days later, it goes down to the Crypt, which is basically a broom closet." In our latest mini-episode, we take a look at the tumultuous history of The Portrait Monument at the United States Capitol Building and the eccentric feminist, Adelaide Johnson, who brought it to life.Comments or Questions? Have you been crawling along the Internet “Super Highway” while others are zipping by? Maybe you haven’t quite merged into the traffic yet. Or maybe you’ve had a website for years, but aren’t getting the results you’ve hoped for. That’s to be expected. Even if your website is sporting the newest bells and whistles. Dynamic and flashy media is good, but it’s not everything. Just having a great website isn’t enough. In this new world of information, you need to be creating content. Not just a static page on your website, but content that is constantly fresh. Just think: if a restaurant only ordered fresh food on the first of the month, customers would stop coming pretty quickly. Who wants a sandwich from two weeks ago? So, how do you go about creating new content online? There are several avenues to choose from, with blogging and podcasting being two great and growing options. It doesn’t stop with those, and we’ll dive in deeper to what we can do, why to do it, and how to make it happen. I’ve been involved in offline content creation for many years. Online, I’ve been blogging for over two years and podcasting for over one year. Maybe not a long stretch compared to some others, but I’ve learned a lot over that time. I plan to share my experience and knowledge to help you in your journey. Along the way, I’ll bring on special guest experts in these different areas to bring your content creation to a new level and, hopefully, show you how to simplify the process. A website is not enough In Michael Hyatt's book, Platform, he emphasizes that a website isn't enough. The mentality of "build it and they will come" doesn't work. Even just having great content doesn't stand on its own. I've tried this. When I started seriously blogging in 2012, I had a good looking website and great content. But I didn't have an audience. Even when i tried to promote on Twitter, I had so few followers, it didn't make much of a difference. I didn't start seeing any growth until I started interacting with others online. I found some blogs to follow and interact with both the blogger (in this case, Chris LoCurto) and the others that were commenting. I started learning better ways to utilize Twitter (it's more than just following others and hoping they follow back). Throughout 2013, I grew my Twitter following from 200 to over 600 - not impressive numbers, but it's still a 300% growth. I started to see my stats improve on my website as well. My numbers suffered when I got busy and inconsistent. So, again, you need more than a great, quality website. For a business owner, a website isn't enough to bring traffic. You have to do something to bring them in. We're going to look at three main things: Blogging Podcasting Video Blogging This is a great way to provide fresh content to your website. With a blog, the newest post displays first and the rest show in reverse chronological order (newest to oldest). Not only will your site visitors enjoy seeing new content, Google rates sites with new, fresh content better. Podcasting Podcasting has done great things for me. I've been able to reach a much bigger audience than I did with just my blog. I've also been able to interview famous authors, and even an actor from the show 24 (I did a podcast called The 24 Podcast with a friend). It's a great way to build your reputation and expand your reach. Video Video takes interaction to a new level, as you are able to convey more of your meaning and personality. You also can take advantage of YouTube, which is the second largest search engine in the world behind Google. Social Media Social media, if done right, can really help you increase the traffic to your website. We'll talk more about social media and networking in future sessions. Questions: Have you started any of these?
Blog at: SimpleLiving.us/006 This week, I have an interview with Dave Stachowiak, and we're talking about core values. You can find out more about Dave at CoachingForLeaders.com. Here are some of the questions he answers: What are core values? Why are core values important? How many core values should you have? How do you start choosing core values? We also had a question submitted by Mark Sieverkropp: Can you describe the difference between a mission statement and core values? I have a feeling that they are distinct and both have a place, but I'm curious to know how you define both and what role they play in a personal, family or organizational life. Here are some of the links from the show: Importance of Core Values Coaching For Leaders Episode #20 - Your Core Values List of Core Values (as mentioned in the show) Questions: Have you set your core values? Would you share them below? Any other questions or comments about core values?
