Selecting the best omega-3 for your needs
Selecting the best omega-3 for your needs Omega-3 fatty acids are essential, but with so many omega-3 options on the market, it's challenging to know which is best. On this show, Drs. Mike and Crystal address commonly asked questions about omega-3 fatty acids such as: What are the health benefits of omega-3s? Which form of omega-3 is best? What is the healthiest omega-3? Is it good to take omega-3 every day? Should I take omega-3 in the morning or at night? How much omega-3 do I need per day?
Two studies published in the same week reveal how seed oils like canola, corn, soy and cottonseed may increase inflammation, creating a pathway for cancer to thrive. On the flip side, omega-3-rich fish oils show promise in reducing inflammation and bolstering the immune system. Listen in this week as Dee discusses the science behind these findings and their potential impact on your health.References:Aronson, W. J., Grogan, T., Liang, P., Jardack, P., Liddell, A. In today's episode, host Colleen Patrick-Goudreau talks all about omega-3s—those essential fats we all need for heart, brain, and overall health. But here's the catch: instead of getting them through fish, which has ethical, environmental, and health concerns, we can go straight to the source: marine plants like algae. Omega-3s aren't included in a regular blood panel, so we'll dive into why it's important to get tested, what the optimal levels are, and why you don't want to fall below them. Let's get into it! In this episode, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Michael Lewis, renowned expert in brain health and traumatic brain injury (TBI), and author of the groundbreaking book, When Brains Collide. Dr. Lewis is the founder of the Brain Health Education and Research Institute and BrainCARE. With a military background and extensive experience in traumatic brain injuries, Dr. Lewis has dedicated his career to exploring how omega-3 fish oils can play a vital role in preventing and recovering from concussions, TBI, stroke, and neurodegenerative diseases. Key Discussion Points 1. The Role of Omega-3 Fish Oils in Brain Health Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), the primary omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oil, are crucial for maintaining brain structure and function. Omega-3s are anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective, making them vital in protecting the brain from injury and supporting recovery. 2. High-Dose Omega-3 Fish Oil for Concussions and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) Dr. Lewis emphasizes how high-dose fish oil can help mitigate damage following a concussion or TBI. Dosing Protocols: In acute brain injury cases, Dr. Lewis recommends significantly higher doses of fish oil (e.g., up to 3-9 grams of combined DHA and EPA per day) to reduce inflammation, promote healing, and restore brain cell membrane integrity. Case studies demonstrate remarkable improvements in TBI patients, including quicker recovery times, reduced brain fog, and restored cognitive function. 3. Fish Oils for Neurodegeneration and Stroke Prevention Regular intake of omega-3s is shown to be effective in reducing the risk of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. Omega-3s help prevent stroke by reducing blood clot formation, improving vascular health, and lowering inflammation in brain tissues. Dr. Lewis advocates for omega-3s as part of a preventive strategy, particularly for aging individuals at higher risk of neurodegenerative conditions. 4. Using Omega-3s as Preventive Medicine Consistent omega-3 supplementation is not just for recovery—it's crucial for maintaining optimal brain health. Athletes, military personnel, and individuals at risk for head trauma should use omega-3s proactively to strengthen their brain's resilience to injury. Preventative Dosing: Dr. Lewis suggests a daily intake of at least 2-3 grams of DHA and EPA combined for ongoing brain health and injury prevention. 5. How to Choose a High-Quality Fish Oil Dr. Lewis explains the criteria for identifying a high-quality fish oil supplement: Purity: Free from contaminants like heavy metals and toxins. Potency: Look for a high concentration of DHA and EPA. Stability: Avoid fish oils that oxidize easily, as rancid oils can be harmful. Sourcing: Prefer fish oils sourced from wild-caught, sustainably harvested fish. Importance of third-party testing to ensure the product is safe and effective. 6. Personal Stories and Case Studies Dr. Lewis shares inspiring stories of patients and athletes who have successfully used omega-3 therapy to recover from brain injuries. Examples include a football player who recovered from multiple concussions and a stroke survivor who regained cognitive function with high-dose omega-3 supplementation. 7. How to Use Omega-3s After Brain Injury Immediate supplementation following a brain injury can make a significant difference in recovery outcomes. The sooner omega-3s are introduced post-injury, the better. Dr. Lewis provides insight into the timing and administration of omega-3 supplements during the acute phase of brain injury treatment. Send us a Text Message.Richard and Stephen answer questions from the Carnivore Community. Topics discussed include the impact of electrolytes on a carnivore diet, tips for maintaining a healthy balance of sodium and potassium, and the importance of animal protein for bone health and nutrition in children. They also announce an upcoming 24-hour live stream event featuring various guests from the carnivore community. Basically, when it comes to training and diet, we need to find a good balance and not overtrain or overeat certain substances. For example, too much iodine, too many omega-3s, not enough saturated fats, and too much coffee can be harmful. For some complaints, especially from women, statins may also be affecting hormones negatively. It's important to listen to our body's hunger signals and make sure we are getting enough protein and fat in our diet. 0.9-1g of protein per pound of ideal body is a good rule of thumb.Thank you so much for listening to my podcast. Something so common in the nutrition and health world is this idea of the magic bullet nutrient. Fats in food used to be that magic bullet for me. I used to think that if people could just get higher amounts of monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids in their diet, things would be so much better. They'd be able to enjoy food, feel satiated more often, and not overeat. Boy was this thinking flawed! In this episode, I break down the skinny on fats in our diets. What they are, where they come from, and what to pay attention to. Listen in as I go through the four main groups of fats - Saturated, Monounsaturated, Polyunsaturated, and Trans Fatty Acids. And then in my next episode I'll discuss Omega-3s and some alternatives to Omega-3s that can help us enjoy a longer, more nourished life. I'm excited for this one. This episode is packed with great information about the types of fats that are helpful, and what to look out for in the ones that aren't. Come and join me in this two part series on the skinny on fats.

In this episode, I'm excited to welcome Dr. Barry Sears, the renowned creator of the Zone Diet and a pillar in our field. Dr. Sears has not only authored bestsellers but has also made incredibly important contributions to clinical practice which we still rely on today: He is, for instance, the scientist who put the use of the AA:EPA ratio on the map. Dr. Sears provides elegant and accessible explanations of the unassailable importance of diet in addressing inflammation, metabolic health, chronic disease, and longevity, and the role that fatty acids play in that milieu. And while he and I might not agree that polyphenols need to be absorbed intact for benefit - there's plenty of evidence that their postbiotic products are very important players, especially in their interactions with the epigenome - his concerns about the chemical structure of highly concentrated fish oil supplements (with the potential for isomerization, as he argues) has opened my eyes and is important, without doubt. I think the jury is still out as to whether there is a negative influence of isomerization in highly concentrated EPA and DHA, but it's worthy of further investigation and (importantly) is another factor in the argument for a whole-food approach. - DrKF Check out the show notes at https://www.drkarafitzgerald.com/fxmed-podcast/ for all the relevant links and resources.
