Our guest today is John Tamny. John is Vice President at FreedomWorks, and Director of its Center for Economic Freedom. He's also editor of RealClearMarkets, and Senior Economic Adviser to mutual fund firm Applied Finance Group. He frequently writes about the securities markets, along with tax, trade and monetary policy issues that impact those markets for a variety of publications including the Wall Street Journal, Investor's Business Daily, Financial Times, National Review and London's Daily Telegraph. Tamny is the author of five books. His latest is When Politicians Panicked: The New Coronavirus, Expert Opinion, and a Tragic Lapse of Reason, which was released on March 30, 2021. Tamny received a BA at the University of Texas at Austin, and his MBA at Vanderbilt. 1) Tell us about this FreedomWorks tour: America's Comeback? You were recently here in AZ, and had some local, national and even international speakers. - CL Bryant, Kari Lake, AZ State Senator Kelly Townsend, Nigel Farage 2) These days the division is so thick that it seems like every conversation causes us to place people in little Political boxes. In your book from 2019 They're Both Wrong: A Policy Guide for America's Frustrated Independent Thinkers you talk about how both Democrats and Republicans have turned the Constitution on its head. Can you break that down for us a bit? 3) Looking over your book titles, back in 2016 Who Needs the Fed? You wrote about the central bank's onrushing economic irrelevance. While only 5 years ago, that seems ahead of the curve in the public's consciousness when thinking about how we could possibly do without the Fed. Tell us about this book. 4) In your most recent book When Politicians Panicked: The New Coronavirus, Expert Opinion, and a Tragic Lapse of Reason you make the case that there were errors and mistakes. But, through the lens of Globalism these “mistakes” look a bit more calculated. Talk to us about that. - Tamny methodically dismantles the political consensus by showing how economic growth has long been the first and last answer to death and disease. He then shows how politicians, having mindlessly crushed a growing economy, proceeded to double down on their mistakes by throwing taxpayer money at their shocking errors. 5) Our next round of elections across the nation are only a few months away. We need to secure our election process, we need to raise up new leaders, we need to elect people who are dedicated to being public servants and Constitutionalists. How can we do that in just a few months' time? 6) What is on the horizon for FreedomWorks?

The Second Phase Podcast - Personal Branding & Brand Marketing and Life Strategies for Success for Female Entrepreneurs

The first step in building a personal brand is to recognize that it is not about you, it's about the perception others have of you.   Before we dive into how to build a personal brand, let's define the phrase personal brand. What is a Personal Brand? Your personal brand is what others think, say, and feel about you. With that said, your first item of business when building a personal brand is to define how you want to be perceived. That doesn't mean, coming up with who you want to be based on what you see everyone else doing and being, but sharing your authentic self, your values, beliefs, passions, the skills you have, your why, and the level of service you want to provide. How to Create a Personal Brand – Step 1 The first step in creating a personal brand is to identify and define your specific personal brand. Every step of your journey to date is part of your personal brand. The successes, mistakes, failures, everything. These things are all unique to you and the business you want to form or have already created. Three Key Questions to Ask When Creating a Personal Brand Ask yourself these three key questions and create your personal branding strategy around them, with the focus on differentiating yourself from all others in your area of expertise. Who are you? What do you do? Why does it matter? Who you are matters to your audience. They need to know who you are in order to trust you.  And they won't hire you until they trust you. Trust determines hiring practices. What you do also matters. Communicating what you do is key for reaching the right people who need the service you provide. Why does what you do matter to your audience? Mattering is marketing. You have to matter, or you can't market. Remember, marketing is communicating your brand story, so if your personal brand doesn't matter, you can't market it. All of the above factors can be evaluated as you write the mission statement for your business. How to Build a Personal Brand - Step 2 The second step is to define your ideal client avatar. Who is it that you are being called to serve? What is her name? What problems does she have that you can solve? Is she a mom and/or a wife? Does she have a corporate job or is she an entrepreneur? I want you to get very specific with who you serve. Example of My Ideal Avatar Jules is 45, she has worked in corporate for 20 years and garnered a lot of experience and expertise. She is burned out from working 9 to 5 and raising her family. Jules wants to start a business where she can have freedom with her schedule and have more family time while making an impact on the lives of her clients. She has a heart for service. Her biggest question is how to build a personal brand and launch a business. Jules struggles with confidence and is afraid to start something new and of the unknowns of entrepreneurship. She has tried to build a business by using her Google search bar. Purchasing on-line courses, joining Facebook groups, listened to podcasts, and has downloaded every free piece of information she could find online but now she's on information overload. She's wondering why these things are working for everyone else and not for her.  Hiring a coach has been on the back burner because she doesn't think she can find the time and is hesitant to spend the money when there are so many free resources. However, she's spent money on “quick fixes”. And these quick fixes have cost her time, energy, and money, left her feeling overwhelmed and confused, and she is now on the brink of burnout. Jules is realizing that she needs help. Just like every one of us, she is not meant to do this alone. She wants someone to guide her step by step on creating a strategy that will work for her and her business, save her time, energy, and money so that she can create profit sooner than later. Jules loves to work hard and is ready and is finally willing to invest in herself and her dreams. Basically, Jules is me 5+ years ago!  Your ideal client avatar is most likely you too. How to Build a Personal Brand – Step 3 The third step is to decide where and how you want to represent yourself as your personal brand. Do you need a website right away? Should you be on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, or Tik-Tok? Where is your ideal client hanging out? The answers to these questions can be found by mapping out the questions your ideal client avatar is asking. What problem is it that she has that you can solve? Where will she be searching for those answers?  Is she searching by hashtags or is she using Google? My ideal client is going to be using Google but is also hanging out on Instagram for inspiration, joining Facebook groups for free information and opportunities, and is using LinkedIn as a business networking tool. Keep it Real But let's be real. You can't be everywhere all the time. Choose the platforms that you love, and you know you'll be able to build relationships on. More about this when we talk about step 5. Key things to consider when building a personal brand and making decisions about what platforms you will be present on. Always have your face front and center. You must be present for people to get to know love and trust you. If you decide to go with a website, which I always recommend, your image should be on your home page, about page, and sprinkled throughout your website. Custom stock photos related to your business are also helpful, whether you are a product or service-based business. Your profile photo on your social media platforms should be the same or similar to the images on your website with your eyes and smile showing. Be consistent and create a cohesive feel for your brand so that you become recognizable and memorable. Doing so will help build a connection which will lead to relationships that will build trust. And by now you can probably repeat it without me…trust determines buying practices. How to Build a Personal Brand - Step 4 The fourth step in building a personal brand is to establish realistic goals. This is another mistake I made. I didn't set long-term goals when I first started my business and the reality is, that if you don't set long-term goals, you aren't moving the needle forward. For the first year of your business, map out the goals you have for building the foundation for success and attracting X number of clients to make X amount of money. Content strategy will be important for achieving these goals, from SEO to social media presence. Your goals for the second year should include your growth and additional steps you will take to achieve that growth.  Will your business model shift in year two? Where do you anticipate opportunities for team expansion? You are now the CEO of your business.  Can you hire someone to take over the responsibilities that you don't love or aren't great at and focus on your zone of genius? Not Too Long-Term I personally don't think setting a 5-year plan is necessary, but a two to three-year plan is important and it must include how you will continue to control what others think, feel and say about you as your business grows. You need to stay present no matter how your business grows, and it's important to stay authentic. You may change, your goals may shift, and your team may grow, these are things you can share to continue connecting with your audience and controlling the perception they have of you. In your budget, include professional branding photoshoots and updates to your website as you plan for growth and additional service options. Be sure that as you establish your goals and tasks within your business you are creating processes and systems so that in the event you can't be present, a team member or family member can step in and take over for a set period of time. How to Build a Personal Brand – Step 5 The fifth step is to start creating content and being present. In order to create, develop, and grow a personal brand you must be present. Creating content can be overwhelming but doesn't have to be. If you are an expert and passionate about what you do and the people you serve, the content is at your fingertips. Each client interaction you experience results in something you can use for content. Every question your answer is a question that others have too, and you can share to help more people. Not to overwhelm yourself, create a content strategy. This is where brand marketing comes into play. Refer back to step 4 – where will you be present? How often will you be present? How much time do you want to dedicate to creating content? Maybe your content strategy will look something like this: A weekly blog post Three Instagram posts 4 LinkedIn posts Or maybe you only want to create long-form content once a month so you write a blog post once a month but are on social media every day. Your content plan has to be something you are comfortable with and can commit to without becoming overwhelmed, frustrated, and burnt out. Every time you create a blog post you have content to share on social media. Do not reinvent the wheel. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose. Every piece of content you create must provide value, entertain, educate or inspire. The key is to focus on differentiation. Remember, you do not have to be on every platform. Start small. Focus on mastering one or two platforms.  Once you have done that, start sharing the same content on other platforms. Chances are that your audience is not on every platform you are on and if they are, the algorithms are determining what they see and they are probably only seeing your content in one place. It never hurts for people to see things more than once. One it helps with recognizability and two it takes 14 to 21 times for someone to see something before it truly resonates. What a Personal Brand Is Not  Note that I didn't mention creating a logo, identifying your color palette or typography. Why? Because they are what make up your brand identity. You first have to create a personal brand. Once you have created a personal brand and decided if you want to move forward with a website, create your brand identity. You will need the elements from your brand identity to design your website and for creating visual content on social media. The goal will be to use your brand identity elements to keep your brand consistent and cohesive across all of your platforms. Your messaging will be the core for consistency and your identity elements will be the mainstay for cohesiveness. Being consistent and cohesive is key to being recognizable, memorable, and for building trust. Who Needs a Personal Brand? One thing I want to add before I close out this episode. I often get the question who needs a personal brand? Everyone! Whether you are in corporate or an entrepreneur, you need and have a personal brand. Remember, your personal brand is the perception others have of you. It's what they think, say, and feel about you. That means you have to be mindful at all times of what content you put out into the world.  That probably sounds a little dramatic, but it's a reality. Even if you are in corporate, people have thoughts on you as a person and those thoughts can influence your career path. Here is an article from Thrive Global that reiterates with my belief that everyone has a personal brand and should be controlling what other think, feel and say about them. Think about it. Have you ever Googled yourself? What comes up? Then ask yourself what you want to come up in search results if anyone else Googles your name. You can control, or at least influence what is found. Episode 21 - Who Needs a Financial Advisor?Welcome to the Making Margin podcast! Greenway’s team is here to discuss common financial mistakes and to help you navigate them. Meet the voices behind Making Margin:NickJeffNatalieDrewToday’s topic is all about who actually needs financial advice. Because of resolutions, a lot of people start looking at what a good financial advisor does at the start of the new year. We’re trying to redefine what a financial advisor can provide and to whom they can provide it. Discussion Topics:According to Advice That Sticks there are a few main reasons why people initially seek out an advisor: Confirmation for a decision they are makingA solution to a long standing problemA solution to a new problem (i.e. inheritance)Wanting help or guidance during an emotional time (i.e. divorce)People think that most of the conversations we have with clients is surrounding investments, when in reality we primarily discuss their personal goals and things outside of the typical portfolio of stocks and bonds. One of our main goals is to help people avoid mistakes, and that doesn’t just mean investment mistakes. The person that doesn’t need an investment advisor is the person that has the time, knowledge, and desire. If you don’t have all 3 then it is probably worth outsourcing.A financial advisor provides an unattached and unemotional approach to investments.Take Away:  More people could find significant value in a good financial advisor than you might think. Traditionally, high-quality advisors were reserved only for the uber-wealthy, while the rest of us were stuck with product salesman masquerading as advisors. That’s changed, though, and now a solid financial plan is available to just about everyone.Resources:Advice That Sticks by Moira Somers

Then Jason finishes up his interview with John Tamny, director for the Center for Economic Freedom, Editor of Real Clear Markets, and author of Who Needs the Fed?: What Taylor Swift, Uber, and Robots Tell Us About Money, as the two discuss the impact of automation on all aspects of our life. John is excited about what all of this change will mean for the common worker and believes it will lead to higher quality of life for all. Key Takeaways: [4:12] A qualification to the beloved Jason mantra of "It's an amazing time to be alive" [7:18] Let Jason control the music and he cares not who controls the laws and the money [12:13] What Martin Armstrong thinks interests rates will be jumping to [15:28] Investors already in the game are praying for higher interest rates John Tamny, Part 2 [20:18] Automation is going to lead into a surge in new kinds of jobs [25:00] The demand for entertainment and service is going to explode [26:49] Tamny's Law: as prosperity grows more and more people escape laziness because they find work they love [28:29] John's thoughts on Universal Basic Income Website: www.JasonHartman.com/Properties www.RealClearMarkets.com

Then Jason talks with John Tamny, director for the Center for Economic Freedom, Editor of Real Clear Markets, and author of Who Needs the Fed?: What Taylor Swift, Uber, and Robots Tell Us About Money about why he believes the Fed doesn't have anywhere near the power they're given credit for, why their policies aren't effective in today's world, and why demographics may not be as useful as they're believed. Key Takeaways: [5:01] If your tenants are there too long it might be a sign your rent is too low [10:22] Some tips on long-term tenant retention [14:49] Evictions don't just stem from not paying rent John Tamny Interview: [19:57] How Uber made John realizing something about the Fed [23:40] The importance of the Fed is vastly overstated [28:42] The idea that the rest of the world is in on some deal where they hold worthless treasuries isn't realistic [31:39] Demographic arguments regarding Japan don't hold a lot of weight with John [35:26] Money flows to its highest use, regardless of the Fed Website: www.VentureAllianceMastermind.com www.RealClearMarkets.com

Episode 33 of The Teaching Space Podcast explores how touch-typing can help both teacher and learner to work much faster.  Introduction Learning to type was probably one of the best things I ever did and this applies to all roles in my life: student, adult, “corporate world me” and teacher. It enables you to work more efficiently at the computer. You get more done thanks to increased speed and accuracy. Touch-typing helps me every day with: Writing my book. Writing podcast outlines. Writing feedback for learners. Communicating by email. Anything that involves communicating using the written word and a computer!  If you can already type, keep listening, because this is a skill you should pass on to your learners and colleagues.  What is Touch Typing? Looking at your screen, not your fingers. Using all (or most) of your fingers to type. Technically, specific fingers activate specific keys (if you have been trained correctly).  Who Needs to Learn to Touch Type Simple - everyone who uses a computer to get things done. You - if you don’t already. They should teach children to touch type as soon as they start Googling!  Who Should Teach Touch Typing This is tricky because I am aware my listeners teach lots of different subjects and age groups. But touch typing is a functional skill in the same way maths, English and ICT are. Typing comes under ICT. While you might not have the curriculum space or capacity to teach touch typing, can you bring it into your teaching in other ways? Let’s discuss in our Facebook group. How Can You Learn to Touch Type? Fair warning - if you have been typing in your own way for many years, it is VERY hard to slow down and unlearn it. But it’s worth it. This is one reason they should teach touch-typing as early in a child’s school experience as possible. But you can do it and it is worth it! The best way: Use an online programme. Get through the bulk of the input as quickly as you can (learn your fingers and keys). Make time for deliberate practice for at least 30 minutes a day. Practice outside of this time every time you use your computer (this is the hardest bit). Marx wrote in the Poverty of Philosophy, in Chapter II Part 1 The Method, Fourth Observation that: “Direct slavery is just as much the pivot of bourgeois industry as machinery, credits, etc. Without slavery you have no cotton; without cotton you have no modern industry..." Moving this argument beyond Marx, Africana scholars/activists, thinkers, cultural workers such as, but not limited to, C. L. R. James; W. E. B. Du Bois, Cedric Robinson, Eric Williams, Amiri Baraka deepens the overture by Marx. According to J. Phillip Thompson in his article titled, Capitalism, Democracy, and Du Bois's Two Proletariats, it is suggested that W. E. B. Du Bois arguments in Marxism and the Negro Problem and Black Reconstruction supports the notion that capitalism created two proletariats. Writing in Marxism and the Negro Problem, Du Bois argues that: [the] black proletariat is not part of the white proletariat. . . while Negro labor in America suffers because of the fundamental inequities of the whole capitalist system, the lowest and most fatal degree of its suffering comes not from the capitalists but from fellow white laborers..." Moreover, capitalism (beginning with slavery) offered the white worker, a second/distinct proletariat role; more specifically a policing role in relation to the first proletariat. Du Bois writes in Black Reconstruction that: “The system of slavery demanded a special police force and such a force was made possible and unusually effective by the presence of the poor whites…” Adding more perspective, Eric Williams writing in Slavery and Capitalism, argued that capitalism was an economic modality that replaced the practice of chattel slavery once European elites accumulated the vast surplus capital to firmly fuel the industrial revolution. Adding more perspective, Eric Williams writing in Slavery and Capitalism, argued that capitalism was an economic modality that replaced the practice of chattel slavery once European elites accumulated the vast surplus capital to firmly fuel the industrial revolution. Contemplating the conditions within which African descendant folk where living during the 1960s, Sydney Wilhelm in, Who Needs the Negro? argues that the conditions which produced the rebellions were caught in the complex relationship of internal colonial conditions that were directly related to the nature of work, the historic role and dependency of black labor, and the shift in the needs of a more technologically advanced global economy. In the tradition of those mentioned above, today we ask: Is it important (or time) be critical of labor?...What is the use of labor in this moment, as we live in a world of algorithms and move toward an artificial intelligent future? What does "Labor" mean in a settler colonial society...? It is within this context that Africa World Now Project's own, Mwiza Munthali caught up with Bill Fletcher. Everybody talks about poor communication, but few do anything about it. - Hugh Ballou Communication is a Leadership Skill Build good habits and skills for personal communication. Inspire others by your caring actions. This is a process that will take time, but it is worth it. Every group has complications with communications – they talk about communication, but are not effective in addressing the problems. Healthy organizations have healthy communication systems. The systems do not happen automatically, but with a lot of planning and evaluation and changes to allow the plan to fit the particular organizations. One size does not fit all! Healthy communication systems fall into the following categories: Communication Skills: Defining the skills that leaders need to be effective communicators Communication Systems: Defining how communication flows and to whom Communication Plan: Defining the communication for specific programs, events, and/or campaigns. Communication Skills Having the best communication system in the world will not work unless the members are skilled in basic communication skills. One reason that the majority of organizations recognize communication as a major issue is two-fold: first, there is no thought-out plan and, second, the people do not have basic skills necessary to ensure effective communication. A program of communication skills training should be included in every leadership training program. The following list of skills is only a beginning for discovering the skills necessary to promote and maintain a healthy communication program. Personal connection Speak directly to the person Arrange a time for delivering important messages, don’t catch someone on the fly Deliver sensitive messages privately Use email only to communicate facts; deliver criticism or sensitive information in person, never use email for negative messages Always be respectful People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care – show that you care Choose words thoughtfully  - use “please”, “would you consider,” etc., and stay away from “you have to understand,” etc. Look directly at the other person Have a positive tone and physical stance Be clear and concise Ask “was that clear?” and wait for a response Get directly to the point and use fewer rather than more words Use words that clearly deliver the message Be inclusive Consider who needs to know and what they need to know Deliver the same message to everyone Build consensus Allow for input from those you communicate to Ask for and receive feedback Consider other perspectives If you ask for an opinion, then receive the opinion without being defensive Listen Allow for silence when the other person has finished speaking for clarity Do not be thinking of your response before the other person has finished talking – listen to the entire message Maintain eye contact Ask questions or comment for clarity and to validate that you heard correctly Communication Systems Defining a healthy communication system is the first step. After the system is defined, then, and only then, can a communication plan be developed to fit into the system. The system has three parts: 1. Specific Messages; 2. Channels of Communication; and 3. Who needs to Know  - target groups! Specific Messages The messages themselves need to be very specific and complete - what, when, where, sometimes: who and why. There are two kinds of messages, one-way and two-way. Each has a different function and carries a different message. Be sure not to confuse the two functions. One-way messages keep the community informed and aligned on specific activities, functions, and projects. It is essential to keep members up to date on current activities and facts. This builds support and groups energy for the organization. This is not interactive communication. It is informational communication. Examples of one-way communications are date and time announcements for concerts, meetings, fellowship activities, etc., updates on projects, financial updates, and updates on operations such as search committees, construction, financial campaigns, and recruitment programs. Two-way messages encourage input and dialogue from a specific target group. This builds community and ownership for projects and campaigns. More complex issues need two-way conversations and dialogue such as vision and value formation, financial planning and evaluation, program evaluation and revision, and volunteer recruitment. Never use email for two-way dialogue. Some people are not comfortable with computers. Some personalities use the opportunity for personal needs and indirect criticism. Email feedback gives opportunities for and actually empowers passive-aggressive behavior. The same rule applies to surveys. Getting input on issues is an opportunity to engage members in process and build relationships. It is an opportunity for education and ministry for leaders. Using focus groups to gain support and get feedback is far more effective than surveys, anyway. Developing a strong program for focus groups will strengthen any organization by connecting members as stakeholders and flushing out potential leaders. Empower healthy behavior and create healthy systems. Summary of the two types of specific messages: One-way messages Informational No need or opportunity for discussion Meeting dates and times Project updates Financial issues Operations updates Two-way messages Invite dialogue Complex and not easy to talk about Vision Values Strategic issues Practical solution finding Channels of Communication Personal Channels Events Staff meetings Committee meetings Board meetings Organizational meetings Called meetings Personal relationships and conversations System Channels Website Email Newsletter Flyers External Media Signage Who needs to Know Internal Target Groups Employees (be specific) Members Board Committees Management Projects or groups Different departments Geographic areas External Target Groups Media Other similar organizations Organizations: civic, service, etc. Government: libraries, schools, legislature Community leaders Other nonprofits Communication Plan An effective communication plan is essential for every program in the organization. For example, when a planning meeting or a long-range plan or strategic plan is concluding, take time to identify the specific messages from that session. Many groups overlook this item because they think it is obvious or they don’t think about this detail. In the absence of information, members make up their own information, which is typically incorrect. So why not give them the correct information? Distributing the specific messages to the correct people builds trust and creates ownership for projects and campaigns, such as strategic planning or a financial campaign. It is important to identify the specific message and, then, who needs to know. Don’t let the process die here. Identify who will send the message and how they will do it. Distinguish messages that are confidential and must stay within the group and messages that need to be distributed internally and externally with the target audience identified. The intentionality of planning communications will not only save time, prevent duplicated or overlooked tasks and hurt feelings (for those feeling left out of the process), it will create interest and synergy within the membership for the process or campaign. The key components of a communication plan are as follows: Specific Message Who Needs to Know? Who Will Tell Them? How Will They Tell Them? When Will They Tell Them?
