Special guest John Withrow returns to recount his grueling adventure at the Margie Gessick race—a notorious 110-mile mountain biking marathon with a staggering 70% Did Not Finish rate. Known for its rocky and root-filled trails in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, this race demanded intense physical and mental endurance. John opens up about the unique challenges he encountered this year compared to past races like the Leadville Trail 100, and how family dynamics influenced his decision to take on such a monumental challenge. We explore the mindset necessary to push through the exhaustion and obstacles, highlighting the personal sacrifices and strategic planning that went into this endeavor. Our conversation shifts to the critical topic of fueling and pacing strategies during these extreme endurance events. I discuss my own experiences, revealing my decision to sometimes walk instead of run to conserve energy and the complexities of maintaining proper nutrition on a technical course. An oversight led to a challenging four-hour stretch with minimal intake, underscoring the importance of listening to the advice of supporters like Joe Wilcox. Discover the small but impactful adjustments, such as taking quick snack breaks, that can significantly enhance performance and endurance. Finally, we reflect on the mix of unexpected challenges and triumphs that make these races unforgettable. From brake issues that turned pit stops into high-stakes moments reminiscent of NASCAR to the satisfaction of overtaking fellow racers, the episode captures the spirit of resilience. We share thoughts on the importance of preparation, the exhilaration of maintaining momentum, and lessons learned for future races. Amidst playful banter and recovery plans, we also touch on the potential for more ordinary events next year, bringing the conversation to a light-hearted conclusion filled with camaraderie and anticipation for future adventures.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Running 200 miles for New Incentives, published by Emma Cameron on March 2, 2024 on The Effective Altruism Forum. What is this? After a running career[1] across marathons, 50K, 50-mile, 100K, and 100-mile distance events over the past eleven years, I'm tackling the 200-mile distance at the Tahoe 200 from June 14-18 this year. It's a bit of a ridiculous, silly challenge. It's also completely wild that I have a privileged life living in a high-income country like the US that allows me to tackle such an adventure. Given all this, I have decided to fundraise for New Incentives through my training and build-up for the event. This is my PledgeIt donation page. I'm thankful to have the support of the folks at High Impact Athletes in putting my page together and thinking through my campaign. My goal is to raise $10,036 to support 650 children enrolling in New Incentive's vaccination program at a cost of $15.44 per infant[2]. I hope you can help promote my fundraising efforts or consider donating yourself! I'm posting on the Forum because it's a wild enough idea that perhaps I can bring some new folks into effective giving in the process.[3] Can I even finish? The short answer: I think so! I have attempted the 200-mile distance once before, at the Moab 240. I only made it about 120 miles before succumbing to the hotter-than-average 110°F heat in the canyons on the second day. Unfortunately, they last-minute swapped out the Tailwind electrolyte solution on course and replaced it with a non-vegan offering, which I wasn't willing to take. I ended up relying on salt pills instead, which wasn't enough. Even after losing my hearing in one ear due to electrolyte imbalance, I was determined to shoulder ahead. Unfortunately, when I stopped being able to keep food or liquids down, my pacer[4] physically carried me a mile into the next aid station, where I passed out and woke up in a van with the race crew. Understandably, they let me know they would be pulling me from the race. So, I definitely "DNF'd" [Did Not Finish] that race, even though I took away a lot of important lessons from it. I have since completed a number of challenging 100-mile ultramarathons, including: Grindstone 100[5] in Virginia, September 2019 Kettle 100 in Wisconsin, virtual in June 2020 Black Hills 100 in South Dakota, June 2021 Superior 100 in Minnesota, September 2022 Javelina 100 [6] in Arizona, October 2023 I've otherwise completed Ironman Wisconsin, qualified for the Boston Marathon twice, backpacked around Wisconsin, biked, rock climbed, and generally feel that I am well-positioned as an endurance athlete to tackle this challenge in Lake Tahoe this June. I think I'm ready! To be clear, my only real goal is to complete the race. I would describe myself as a 'mid-pack' runner in the 200-mile distance, at best. I will be running alongside such professional legends as Courtney Dauwalter, who has notably attempted to break the course record at the Tahoe 200[7] by completing it in

Minisode: When to DNF

Summary: We've all faced it, but for some it's hard to do and fills us with guilt. What is DNF (not to be confused with DTF…) and why is it so important to abandon books when they do not serve you?    DNF: Did Not Finish (you abandoned the book)   Holly DNFs when: There's no page requirement, but her main rule of thumb is - if she thinks it, it's already too late. The main driver? She no longer cares what is going to happen. She can get actively annoyed with characters, but for whatever reason she no longer cares about the future plot of the book.    Devin DNFs when: she starts avoiding the book. When she needs to DNF, she essentially ghosts the book, focusing instead on chores, television, and crafting. She sometimes won't even realize right away that it's time to DNF until she recognizes that she hasn't read in almost a week.    Reading a book can sometimes feel like a relationship, and when things go wrong it's natural for us to wonder if the problem is with… us. But there isn't anything wrong with giving up on a book that doesn't bring you joy. The key is to not waste time on books that bother you, but instead to keep exploring genres and authors until you find your wheelhouse just like Holly and Devin with thrillers and romances.    Holly recommends reviewing each book you read or DNF so you can more consciously hone what works (or not) for you in your reading. Devin acknowledges that sometimes a book doesn't serve us in that season of our lives, so a DNF doesn't have to be permanent and revisiting books even years later can lead to fulfillment.    Overall, reading as adults is fun and supposed to bring us joy. So much of life is full of pressure, and reading should not be one. Ultimately, life is too short to read books you don't like. So DNF and do it with pride!    Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

The three worst letters in the ultra world are DNF, all because they stand for “Did Not Finish” and mark the incompletion of a race that you probably worked hard to train for. DNF's are painful. There is no way around it. Especially after you likely put in tons of time and energy to prepare for your race, only to have it not go the way that you intended. So, in this episode, I share tons of tips to help you prevent a DNF in your next race as best as you possibly can, based on my experience of finishing tons of ultras. Leading by Example 1 Peter 5:1-11 Jeremiah 3:15 I will give you shepherds who are loyal to me, and they will shepherd you with knowledge and skill. Ezekiel 34:1-9 1 The word of the Lord came to me: 2 “Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of Israel. Prophesy, and say to them, ‘This is what the Lord God says to the shepherds: Woe to the shepherds of Israel, who have been feeding themselves! Shouldn't the shepherds feed their flock? 3 You eat the fat, wear the wool, and butcher the fattened animals, but you do not tend the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty. 5 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd; they became food for all the wild animals when they were scattered. 6 My flock went astray on all the mountains and every high hill. My flock was scattered over the whole face of the earth, and there was no one searching or seeking for them. 7 “‘Therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord. 8 As I live—this is the declaration of the Lord God—because my flock, lacking a shepherd, has become prey and food for every wild animal, and because my shepherds do not search for my flock, and because the shepherds feed themselves rather than my flock, 9 therefore, you shepherds, hear the word of the Lord! How do we turn a "Did Not Finish" into a "Did Not Fail?" 1 Peter 5:1-11 I exhort the elders among you as a fellow elder and witness to the sufferings of Christ, as well as one who shares in the glory about to be revealed: 2 Shepherd God's flock among you, not overseeing out of compulsion but willingly, as God would have you; not out of greed for money but eagerly; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 In the same way, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. All of you clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, so that he may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your cares on him, because he cares about you. 8 Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. 9 Resist him, firm in the faith, knowing that the same kind of sufferings are being experienced by your fellow believers throughout the world. 10 The God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, establish, strengthen, and support you after you have suffered a little while. 11 To him be dominion forever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21 20 Now to him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us— 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ezekiel 34:4 You have not strengthened the weak, healed the sick, bandaged the injured, brought back the strays, or sought the lost. Instead, you have ruled them with violence and cruelty.

I'm sharing how to process the emotions you experience instead of making these things mean you're a failure.   Get full show notes and more information here: https://notyouraveragerunner.com/239

It's a tough subject, but someone's gotta talk about it... yes, those dreaded three letters. D. N. F. Did Not Finish. In this episode, Jody and David talk all things DNF as they introduce the first (and possibly last) ever Bad Boy Running guest, ultra-athlete Stefanie Bishop. Here's what we got up to:  Jody confesses to doing something he's never done before… and David shows absolutely no sympathy towards him (honestly, not a word of support) The chaps drop the bombshell that the actually have a guest… introducing the incredible extreme racing champion and Death Race veteran Stefanie Bishop Stefanie explains her experience of running the first winter Death Race, shooting 9mms and tackling Olympic wrestlers… as well as the slightly lacking ‘motivational' speeches by the organiser to help you through it Stefanie ponders which is more difficult: sat in a cold pond for hours with hypothermia or drinking 4 litres of milk? Stefanie reveals the quality of the reward for completing Death Races (honestly, it's worth spending hours in a pond with hypothermia for…) David recalls the first time he met Stef at a race… and it wasn't pretty (for a very good reason) Why Stef had to be forced to DNF and why less clothes is often better (or not, as we discover) Stef reveals the frankly RIDICULOUS amount of time she spent trying to overcome one obstacle during a race (no, really you won't believe this) David accidentally reveals the names of two people in a relationship no-one is supposed to know about ALERT, ALERT… a genuinely good idea actually features on the show! David decides to end the podcast episode on a particularly awkward question for Stef Enjoy! If you enjoyed this episode please SUBSCRIBE to get every episode delivered to you before everyone else. Have you heard the term “DNF”? Veteran runners will know that DNF stands for “Did Not Finish,” three somewhat unpleasant words for every runner of every level.
