Mud Whale are a highly dynamic alt-rock band formed in 2018 in Cleveland, Ohio.Shortly after arriving in his new home, vocalist and guitarist Michael Morris went searching for like-minded musicians and found a tight-knit group with guitarist Justin Cheuvront, drummer Avery Sylvaine and bassist Joe Hanson. The band's existence is a “beautiful, random coincidence” that finds them united by a shared vision of making music that's as tenderly melancholic as it is urgently chaotic.Mud Whale have burst forth with a powerful sound that's easily accessible yet wholly their own, propelled by an intent focus on strong songwriting and razor-sharp musicianship. We trace echoes from Psalm 95, Genesis, and Exodus, uncovering how the sailors sound more righteous than the prophet. The conversation uncovers themes of evil and creation, as Jonah is cast into the sea and swallowed by the great fish.Episode 214 of the Two Texts Podcast | Jonah Beyond the Whale 11If you want to get in touch about something in the podcast you can reach out on podcast@twotexts.com or by liking and following the Two Texts podcast on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. The tropical waters of Sri Lanka, an island off the coast of India, are home to a population of blue whales unlike any other. These whales stay put, while every other known population migrates. That discovery was made by budding scientist Asha de Vos more than 20 years ago—it made a splash, and so did she. She later became the first Sri Lankan to earn a PhD studying marine mammals, charting a new scientific path in her country.Host Flora Lichtman talks with de Vos about her path into science, what it means to be the first Sri Lankan in her field, and how she built a marine biology program from the ground up.Guest: Dr. Asha de Vos is a marine biologist and the founder and executive director of the non-profit Oceanswell. She's based in Sri Lanka.Transcripts for each episode are available within 1-3 days at sciencefriday.com. Subscribe to this podcast. As a child reader, I always thought it was so quaint that "dinner" was this old-timey word for lunch. It was a "Dinner Pail" - which was a crude Indian Tiffin - only 1 chamber - vs. a Lunch Box.But I had never spent any tme thinking about why and how Dinner was the big meal of the day, and supper was toast dipped in cooling stew.Until I thought about it in terms of cooking in the dark. When the sun goes down at 4:25 pm, why was anyone making all manner of food they can't see!?But - the Whale as Light in the early 1800's started to make it's mark. Sure factories were changing the rhythm of life, but without artificial light to support the change, it never would have taken. The age of sail was also the Age of the Pursuit of the Whale. So come join the chase.Music Credit: Fingerlympics by Doctor TurtleShow Notes: https://thehistoryofamericanfood.blogspot.com/Email: TheHistoryofAmericanFood at gmail dot comThreads: @THoAFoodInstagram: @THoAFood& some other socials... @THoAFood

Oregon is not known as a particular hot spot for whale watching – at least not compared to places like the Puget Sound or Hawaii – but at least one spot has enough action that it's been dubbed the “whale watching capital of Oregon.” On this week's episode of Peak Northwest, we take a trip to Depoe Bay, the whale watching destination on the central Oregon coast, where we look for gray whales, eat good seafood and explore all the other attractions around town. While most gray whales swim right past Depoe Bay on their annual migration, a small population likes to stick around. These “summer residents” have earned a following and helped establish a whale watching industry in town. As the whales gather in the shallows offshore, the people gather on the shores to watch. Here are some highlights from this week's show: Where, when and how to go whale watching in Depoe Bay. The food scene in town is worth exploring, from Gracie's Sea Hag to Pirate Coffee Company. A series of small parks around town offer beautiful ocean views. What would a coast town be without some good shoppy shops? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We switched things up with a listener Q&A! Renee and Olivia answer your Instagram questions — from whether after-birth contractions feel worse the second time, to the hardest parts of going from one to two kids, how to keep a toddler occupied while breastfeeding, getting out the door with a “selective hearing” toddler, and the messy juggle of returning to work. With humour and honesty, they share real day-in-the-life rhythms, small hacks that make big differences, and why repair beats perfection when we inevitably snap. It's a loving reminder that the season is fleeting, the village matters, and you're never doing it alone. What to Expect in This Episode:After-birth contractions can feel stronger with subsequent births (experiences vary).Time is the toughest part of going from one to two — for kids, partners and yourself.Early weeks are logistics heavy; routine returns and outings get easier with practice.Day-in-the-life: park/library runs, nap overlaps, bath play, and flexible evenings.Breastfeeding a newborn with a toddler around: simple set-ups and (sometimes) screen time.Leaving the house: get low, make eye contact, offer two choices, keep it playful.Gentle bribery (hello babychinos and lollipops) can smooth transitions.Freezer back-ups and “combine the chaos” dinners with friends save sanity.Returning to work is individual; release perfection and prioritise repair over “perfect” days.Doubt and snapping happen — apologise, reconnect, and keep going.Things We Mention:Low-stimulation kids' picks: Snail and the Whale, Zog (ABC iview; also on Stan for downloads)Toddler entertainment: sensory/activity boxes, magnet tiles, simple pre-set play scenesMusic/TV: The Wiggles (used intentionally and in short bursts)Bribes/treats: babychinos, FUNDAY sweets lollipops for travel/transitionsHousehold helpers: whiteboard on the fridge for reminders; Koala Eco for gentler cleaningMeals & freezer staples: Made For Mothers (Sri Lankan chicken curry), Le Purée purées, backup lamb cutlets, meatballs, frozen vegPractical parenting tips: “choices over commands,” prep outfits the night before, carrier at witching hourConnect with Mum Era Podcast Email: hello@mumerapodcast.com Website: mumerapodcast.com Instagram: mumerapodcastConnect with Renee: Instagram: @reneebarghConnect with Olivia: Instagram: @oliviajdavies

In this exclusive interview, I sit down with Kyle Samani, co-founder of Multicoin Capital and chairman of Forward Industries, to unpack the future of on-chain capital markets and why his firm just deployed $1.5 billion in cash to purchase Solana. We dive into Kyle's bold bet on Solana, what inspired Forward Industries' plan to become the most on-chain native publicly traded company, and how Project Crypto from SEC Chairman Paul Atkins could transform global markets. Kyle shares why Solana is uniquely positioned to handle tokenized securities, why treasury companies are evolving beyond Bitcoin, and how institutional adoption will reshape the financial system.

(Include your email if you'd like us to reply)In which John and David begin their close reading of Jonah 1:4–16, exploring the storm at sea, the irony of the prophet asleep while Gentile sailors pray, and the echoes of God's call in the captain's words. Along the way, they notice how Jonah inverts expectations, draws on the Psalms, and anticipates later moments in the story.Episode 212 of the Two Texts Podcast | Jonah Beyond the Whale 9If you want to get in touch about something in the podcast you can reach out on podcast@twotexts.com or by liking and following the Two Texts podcast on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Understanding exactly how the billions of neurons and trillions of connections in our brains could be one of the greatest scientific breakthroughs in history. And, surprisingly, we're not as far off from that as you might think. In episode 2 of our brain series, host Dr. Samantha Yammine is joined by Dr. Forrest Collman who helped create the most detailed brain diagram ever made. Sam also digs into how much microplastic is really in our heads and how our brain might be an unreliable narrator. Last year, there were 36 whales entangled with commercial fishing gear off the coasts of Oregon, Washington and California, or found entangled with West Coast fishing gear off the coasts of other countries. That’s the highest number of whale entanglements in the West Coast region since 2018, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. More than eight years ago, scientists at Oregon State University began collaborating with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, the commercial Dungeness crab fishery and environmental nonprofits to reduce entanglements of endangered humpback, fin and blue whales off the Oregon Coast. OSU scientists boarded research vessels and U.S. Coast Guard helicopters for surveys at sea and air to map the distribution of whales and their overlap with Dungeness crab fishing locations. The scientists found that the risk of entanglement in fishing gear is greatest for whales in April when they gather near shore to feed off the Oregon Coast, and the crab fishing season is still underway. That observation and discussions with stakeholders led to best practices and regulations adopted by ODFW to limit the risk of entanglement by, for example, reducing crab pot limits at the end of the season. Today, OSU scientists are expanding this work to include the risk of entanglement from other commercial fisheries, including rockfish and sablefish. They’ve also been analyzing scars on humpback whales’ tails and fins to better estimate how many whales are getting wrapped up in nets, lines, pots and buoys. Leigh Torres is an associate professor in the department of fisheries, wildlife and conservation sciences and Oregon Sea Grant Extension at Oregon State University. She joins us to share the latest with this award-winning effort to reduce whale entanglements off the Oregon Coast and beyond.
Today, I chat with Drew Thurlow, a strategist focused on how AI might be democratizing the music industry, rather than destroying it. We talk about how AI is changing everything from the creative process to copyright law, whether or not we should be worried about AI-generated music like the Velvet Sundown, and how AI is being used to surface the most popular songs made by whales in the sea. We also talk about this former Sony, Warner, and Pandora exec's upcoming new book "Machine Music: How AI Is Transforming Music's Next Act,'" set for release in 2026. Drew will definitely have you thinking new thoughts today! The News! Susie learned about a shocking situation developing at a French aquarium housing killer whales where animal rights activists caught the trainers, um, handling the whales to alleviate adult desires brewing between the whales. We hear why it's happening, and why it's so upsetting (beyond the obvious). We discuss the situation between 74yo former NFL coach Bill Bellichek and his 24yo girlfriend, why we can't decide who the villain is, and why it's flipping the script of May/December romances. We learn the story of the Great British Bakeoff, why they take casting so seriously, and why the bakers hold disdain for a particular type of cast member. Susie talks about the lawsuit against airlines who charge people for windowless window seats on flights, and why we think it'll shake up the industry. We learn why many adults are ordering kids meals and why Sarah won't do it. And we discuss whether it is important to be able to read an analog clock and write cursive, and why learning handwriting is about far more than it seems.Brain Candy Podcast Presents: Susie & Sarah's SpOoOoOoOoktacular Spectacle, October 30, Oriental Theater, Denver, Colorado: Get your tickets!
