Less than 400 left — that's how many North Atlantic right whales remain in the world. These critically endangered whales are at the center of an urgent conservation story, but how the media communicates about them plays a powerful role in shaping public awareness and action. In this episode of How to Protect the Ocean, Andrew Lewin sits down with Dr. Marcus Reamer, a new PhD graduate in science communication, to explore how newspapers and digital outlets covered right whale crises over the past decade. Science communication emerges as a critical conservation tool, with Dr. Reamer sharing insights from his research on major publications like the New York Times, Washington Post, and LA Times. Together, they unpack why media coverage spikes during crises but fades when attention shifts elsewhere, and what this means for endangered species storytelling. Whale conservation depends not only on data and science but also on the narratives shared with the public. This conversation highlights how media framing can help or hinder conservation literacy, and how improved communication can increase support for saving one of the world's rarest whales. In today's episode of the Captain Paul Watson Foundation Podcast, we get the chance the speak with CPWF Chicago chapter leader, Joseph Maltese. Joseph tells us all about a whale that most people don't know exists. The Rice's Whale (Balaenoptera ricei) was acknowledged as a distinct species of whale from the Bryde's whale in 2021. Joseph explains why these whales are endangered, and what needs to change in order to help them. Joseph and the CPWF Chicago team plan to launch a social media campaign to create more awareness about the plight of the Rice's whale. There are less than 50 of these whales left, and we need to do everything we can to protect them.Joseph did a report on the Rice's whale and you can read his report here - https://storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/36408579c22646a9a44a1028369adcf8Support the showhttps://www.paulwatsonfoundation.org/https://shop.paulwatson.com/
President Trump held a press conference Monday to announce a federal takeover of D.C. police, and CNN unfurled its usual fury, starting with Canadian "fact checker" Daniel Dale lamenting "there was a lot of deception." But was there? Dale hemmed and hawed over Trump's framing of crime stats, while allowing that D.C. is a high-crime city.
Jonah // Week 2 // A Whale Of A LessonJonah 1:11-12 NASB 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you that the sea may become calm for us?”—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, for I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.”Jonah 1:15-16 NASB 15 So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.Jonah 1:17 NASB 17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.1. The SWALLOWING was for SALVATION.2. The RESTRICTION was for RESTORATION.Jonah 2:1-9 NASB1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, 2 and he said, “I called out of my distress to the Lord, and He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. 3 “For You had cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. 4 “So I said, ‘I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' 5 “Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. 6 “I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, but You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. 7 “While I was fainting away,I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to You, into Your holy temple. 8 “Those who regard vain idols forsake their faithfulness, 9 but I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord.”1. The SWALLOWING was for SALVATION.2. The RESTRICTION was for RESTORATION.3. The PURGING was for PROVISION.Jonah 2:10 NASB10 Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.Jonah 3:1-3a NASB 1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.” 3a So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord...1. The SWALLOWING was for SALVATION.2. The RESTRICTION was for RESTORATION.3. The PURGING was for PROVISION.

First up on the podcast, Online News Editor David Grimm brings stories on peacock feathers' ability to emit laser light, how anteaters have evolved at least 12 times, and why we should be thanking ketchup for our French fries. Next on the show, rorqual whales, such as the massive blue whale, use a lunging strategy to fill their monster maws with seawater and prey, then filter out the tasty parts with baleen sieves. Lunging for food when you weigh 100 tons seems like it would be an energetically expensive way to meet your dietary needs. But as Ashley Blawas, a postdoctoral researcher at the Hopkins Marine Station at Stanford University, describes in Science Advances this week, lunge-feeding whales have a few tricks up their sieves and use much less energy than predicted. This week's episode was produced with help from Podigy. About the Science Podcast Authors: Sarah Crespi; David Grimm Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

(Include your email if you'd like us to reply)In which John and David reflect on the contrast between Jonah and the other prophets of scripture. We explore the literary and theological weight of Jonah 1:2–3, where the familiar prophetic pattern is disrupted by Jonah's defiance. From “rising and going” to “rising and fleeing,” we trace the movement down into disobedience—and away from the face of God. We highlight Jonah's descent (linguistic and literal), the mirroring structures in the text, and how the book of Jonah's poetic construction invites readers into deep reflection on the nature of obedience, resistance, and God's presence.Episode 207 of the Two Texts Podcast | Jonah Beyond the Whale 4If you want to get in touch about something in the podcast you can reach out on podcast@twotexts.com or by liking and following the Two Texts podcast on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Recorded live from the Oregon coast on the final day of MeCamp, this special two-part conversation between Jen and her partner Tyler Merritt is the perfect blend of hilarity, heart, and honesty. In Part 1, Jen and Tyler share stories from their MeCamp adventures — including a whale-watching excursion that got a little too close for comfort, and a near-death boat ride they'll never forget. They also reflect on the power of personal storytelling, how vulnerability has shown up in their lives and work, and why telling the truth (even when it's awkward) can be both healing and hilarious. Discussing the impact of Tyler's viral video "Before You Call the Cops" to Jen's reflections on her upcoming book "Awake," this conversation reveals the transformative potential of embracing vulnerability. Tune in to discover how opening up about our most personal stories can not only heal us but also inspire others to see themselves in our narratives. Tyler talks about the most awkward moment he's ever had because he opted to be vulnerable and honest instead of protecting his pride He and Jen discuss the hardest truths they've ever had to tell themselves And Tyler goes back into the annals to reveal his most embarrassing moment as a performer on stage Thought-provoking Quotes: “The spirit of MeCamp almost got us killed.”– Tyler Merritt “I'm aware that it's not every day that most people see a six foot two black man with dreadlocks crying in real life. I have never regretted a single moment in my life of being transparent about how I feel emotionally with somebody. Vulnerability has never kicked back at me in a negative way.”– Tyler Merritt “I think vulnerability begets vulnerability. Because I was saying who I am and I was allowing myself to be open to the world, the world was willing to take that. What it did within the black community is it allowed a lot of other black people to begin making their own videos going, before you call the cops, I just want you to know this about me. So it opened up a door of vulnerability that really allowed that to kind of echo.”– Tyler Merritt Resources Mentioned in This Episode: Depoe Bay, Oregon – https://visittheoregoncoast.com/cities/depoe-bay/ Awake: A Memoir by Jen Hatmaker - https://amzn.to/40MYuXs Jen shares the first line from Awake – https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMrDdj4sCaQ/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=ZzdzZGdvM3h5Mmd6 This Changes Everything: A Surprisingly Funny Story About Race, Cancer, Faith, and Other Things We Don't Talk About by Tyler Merritt – https://amzn.to/4m135Oj Brené Brown – https://brenebrown.com/ Before You Call The Cops by The Tyler Merritt Project – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGu_xGBekpo I Take My Coffee Black: Reflections on Tupac, Musical Theater, Faith, and Being Black in America by Tyler Merritt – https://amzn.to/47by9Gf Luna Sea Fish House in Yachats, Oregon – https://www.lunaseafishhouse.com/ Buy My Own Drinks by Runaway June – https://open.spotify.com/track/40p6WybX0YvcLdMlLja3oL A Door Made for Me by Tyler Merritt – https://amzn.to/4mv4jBd A Long December by Counting Crows - https://open.spotify.com/track/1tjKIXd7DYNklhVSgBxREi Guest's Links: Website - https://thetylermerrittproject.com/ Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thetylermerrittproject/ Twitter - https://x.com/ttmproject Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/thetylermerrittproject Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPB48_JfK-VMnYQPTYyMX5Q Connect with Jen!Jen's Website - https://jenhatmaker.com/ Jen's Instagram - https://instagram.com/jenhatmakerJen's Twitter - https://twitter.com/jenHatmaker/ Jen's Facebook - https://facebook.com/jenhatmakerJen's YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/JenHatmaker The For the Love Podcast is presented by Audacy. We explore Jonah's earlier prophetic role in 2 Kings, the contradictions between Jonah and Amos, and the troubling question of why Jonah speaks blessing to one evil nation and withholds mercy from another. Along the way, we encounter a God whose covenant faithfulness spans centuries—and whose mercy unsettles even his own prophets.Episode 206 of the Two Texts Podcast | Jonah Beyond the Whale 3If you want to get in touch about something in the podcast you can reach out on podcast@twotexts.com or by liking and following the Two Texts podcast on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Happy Sunday and a blessed week to everyone, except Mandy Patinkin. In this catch-up we talk about the unfolding situation in Gaza (spoiler: some healthy disagreement!), the meaning of being able to criticize someone you love, toothaches and heartaches. Also:You don't hate the UN enoughSome Astronomer talk…sorry if no one cares anymore. But have you seen this great response they put out?? .Lena Dunham is an awful, awful geniusJonah and the Whale and BuddhismA spotify recommendationAn evergreen reminder: If you only rediscover your Judaism when it's time to criticize Istael, we don't care what you think. And finally - you can find Chaya Leah's birthday gift on our Substack!!! This kind of reminds me of the time Homer Simpson got Marge a bowling ball with his initials on it. I must have watched it 300 times!! But she loves it too. Don't forget please that there are 50 hostages, in Gaza, many alive. They need to come home, now. This is a public episode. Tickets for The Box of Oddities Live Tour Here! In this Freak Family Favorites episode of The Box of Oddities, we investigate three very different ways humans have tried to solve very different problems—with wildly questionable success. First, we ride back to 1894, when the streets of major cities were ankle-deep in horse poop and people feared civilization would be buried in a literal pile of its own progress. What was the solution to the Great Horse Manure Crisis? Spoiler: it wasn't a bigger shovel. Then, we dive into the squishy, grotesque, and oddly therapeutic world of Victorian medicine with a "cure" for rheumatoid arthritis that required the patient to crawl inside a dead whale carcass. You read that right. It's less “spa treatment,” more “Jonah fan fiction.” And finally, we pedal straight into psychedelic history with a celebration of Bicycle Day—the trippy anniversary of the world's first intentional LSD journey in 1943. A chemist. A bike. And a brain on technicolor fire. From poop-pocalypse panic to whale-based healing rituals and accidental acid trips, this episode is a wild ride through the absurd corners of human history.
