Sure this episode starts with talk about sausages, but how else does one segue their conversation to talking about salp? And you need to talk about salp to talk about jellyfish, right? Which, of course, is the best way to talk about crabification. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! Whales can't poop under pressure - the pressure achieved in great depths of water, not the pressure of pooping in front of a crowd. This week's guest, the Guernsey Scientist herself, marine biologist and conservationist, Elizabeth Sweet, takes Kovi and Benjamin on a heck of a ride as she shares her story from finding her way into science to her myriad of science communication projects today.

The Santa Barbara Channel is a busy gateway-- for tourists heading to island parks, fishermen chasing the day's catch, and massive cargo ships ferrying goods along the coast. It's also home to some of California's oldest marine protected areas and a critical migratory path for endangered whales. But with as many as 20 ships passing through daily, those whales are at constant risk. Scientists estimate more than 80 are fatally struck by vessels off the West Coast each year. So what's being done to protect whales? Reporter: Danielle Venton, KQED Authorities have found the bodies of all seven people who went missing after an explosion at a fireworks warehouse in Yolo County last week. Today on the podcast, I'm honored to welcome a true water whisperer — Rebecca Goff, founder of Aqua Cranial®, a healing modality that merges craniosacral therapy with the intelligence of the ocean. For over two decades, Rebecca has worked with dolphins, whales, babies, mothers, and healers — guiding them back to regulation, softness, and connection through the gentle rhythms of the sea. Her work is rooted in presence, energy, and the sacred remembrance that water holds memory — and that healing doesn't have to be forceful to be profound. Rebecca is also a children's book author, translating her love of marine life and energetic healing into stories like “Kissing Whales: Healing Dolphins” — a heartwarming dive into nature's wisdom, available now on Amazon. In this episode, we explore the origin of Aqua Cranial, how she began working with dolphins in Hawaii, and what happens when we allow the body to be held — truly held — by water, rhythm, and nature. To learn more about Rebecca's work, visit www.aquacranial.com and explore her sessions, trainings, and beautifully cinematic sessions on her YouTube channel. http://www.aquacranial.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@AuntieOcean https://www.amazon.com/Kissing-Whales-Healing-Dolphins-Aquacranial/dp/159800137X/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.x_Nk8_gODEww7ubrjxi6v3T7DVgRqzBwh0sIzHruM5f4YpZDtaHvxgpi7wXhPYcAh8f1mM8oiQ_eTlBEWsCPSTm9JSfu6l8nX3Ws9itlpXw.GV63uZRvobo0aPWrV6qQ1DGdWTWCjfqLFSgEIdEAVMM&dib_tag=se&qid=1751384539&refinements=p_27%3ARebecca+Goff&s=books&sr=1-1&text=Rebecca+Goff

Giant leviathan, check! Plethora of teenage heroes, check! The end of a four-issue run! CHECK CHECK..... Ok...let's talk about what we have seen and read, and prep ourselves for the next saga. In order to talk about this issue, we need to learn how to speak whale. Some think that the key to learning a new language is to listen to tapes while you sleep. We strongly discourage this idea with learning whale. Mostly because it is loud droning that will totally screw up your rem cycle. Early phrases you should learn are, "where is the good kelp?", "please do not sit on my boat.", and finally, "why are you flying in the sky?". You will be amazed how useful and frequent these phrases are used. Whales tend to travel in groups or pods of family members. They tend to work together for the benefit of the group. Usually, these pods do not consist of humans. And they rarely consist of superpowered teenagers. One thing we know for sure, whales do not wear shoes. Whales are also not especially adept at digging. This is because they have no hands or drills. Whales have been known to use shotguns. This mostly occurs in deep ocean waters, but it has been seen in some of the rougher neighborhoods of New York. What scientists have been in total agreement about, is that whales fight. They do not just fight, they throw down and lay it all out on the field. They throw punches, they bite, they do suplexes. Seeing a whale battle royale is a site. And then whales can also get their tails kicked when they go up against a better foe. What? Too soon?? That is our thesis on whales. Probably not accurate, but brief. We also have some merchandise over at Redbubble. We have a couple of nifty shirts for sale. https://www.redbubble.com/people/jeffrickpresent/?asc=u Check out the pictures we talked about here: https://jeffandrickpresent.wordpress.com/2025/06/29/infinity-the-hunt-4-conclusion-final-exam/ You can also subscribe and listen to us on YouTube! AP correspondent Ben Thomas reports it's a busy time on Australia's humpback highway.
This Pride Month edition of Sitting in the Dark shines a lavender light on the long-standing but often invisible relationship between horror cinema and queer identity. Host Kynan Dias traces horror's appeal to outsiders—particularly LGBTQ+ viewers—who find coded representation in monsters, victims, and the margins of genre storytelling. The episode dives deep into three genre-defining films. The Bride of Frankenstein (1935)James Whale's campy sequel is reevaluated as a foundational queer text. The panel explores how Whale, an out gay director, infused the film with coded themes of same-sex companionship, rejection, and theatricality. From Dr. Pretorius's foppish villainy to the Bride's brief, iconic scream, the film is bursting with subtext—much of it retroactively interpreted through the lens of queer longing and societal othering. The group also riffs on Whale's tonal whiplash, Elsa Lanchester's cultural impact, and why “We belong dead” might be the most tragic queer line in horror history.A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge (1985)Often derided as a messy sequel, this film is now embraced by many as a camp classic of queer horror. The conversation covers the now-notorious creative denials around its subtext, the dynamic between actor Mark Patton and the filmmakers, and the striking presence of a “final boy” whose journey blurs lines between possession, repression, and queer awakening. The film's overt homoeroticism—locker rooms, leather bars, and sweaty dance sequences—is discussed not just for laughs, but as meaningful queer coding in the Reagan-era horror landscape. The panel also reckons with Freddy as a metaphor for internalized shame, and what it means when a horror film can't quite let its subtext become text.Titane (2021)Winner of the Palme d'Or and easily the most divisive film of the trio, Titane pushes the panel into complex conversations about gender fluidity, body horror, and the relationship between performance and identity. Is this a trans allegory? A critique of binaries? Or just a deeply weird tale of trauma and transformation? The hosts wrestle with the film's ambiguity, discussing its uncompromising visuals, unexpectedly tender surrogate father-son relationship, and what it means to build a chosen family amidst radical bodily change. Some saw it as alienating; others, transcendent. All agreed: this one will be analyzed for decades. This episode doesn't wrap everything up with a rainbow bow—and that's the point. Horror isn't tidy, and queerness rarely comes with clean lines or clear labels. But if you've ever felt like the monster, the final someone, or the person who's just a little too into the firetruck, this conversation might feel like coming home. Or at least like sitting in the dark with people who see what you see.Film SundriesThe List on LetterboxdWatch the movies discussed:The Bride of Frankenstien: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdA Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge: Apple • Amazon • LetterboxdTitane: Apple • Amazon • Letterboxd (00:00) - Welcome to Sitting in the Dark (07:05) - Coded Queer Horror (10:03) - Dealing with the Morality Police (16:21) - Bride of Frankenstein (35:14) - A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge (53:55) - Titane (01:21:46) - Coming Attractions: The Drac Pack Learn how to support our show and The Next Reel's family of film podcasts by becoming a member. Welcome back everybody to another instillment of Woody Adjacent! this time we are switching things up a little and taking a Reddit Recommendation - particularly from the Woody Allen Subreddit, an awesome community if we do say so ourselves :) As such, we're diving into 2005's The Squid and the Whale – a semi-autobiographical indie from writer-director Noah Baumbach - this movie explores the painful unraveling of a marriage and the lasting emotional effects on the two teenage sons caught up in the fallout. With some really great performances across the board, this episode clearly contains two previous Woody Alumni in a film that blends dark humour with brutal honesty that definitely echoes some Woody Allen DNA - Let's get into it! _____________________________________________ Director Interview Mentioned / Played in Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubckvIqxBW0 _______________________________________________ For full cast details, user reviews, and more background on the film, check out:

Send us a textWhen humpback whales gather by the hundreds off South Africa's coast, scientists scratch their heads while Anne Gordon smiles knowingly. As a lifelong communicator with cetaceans and pioneer of whale watching in Panama, Anne brings profound wisdom from our planet's gentle ocean elders to this enlightening conversation. These magnificent marine mammals aren't just intelligent - they're ancient consciousness incarnate. With brains larger than ours and 30 million years of evolutionary history (compared to humans' mere 250,000), dolphins and whales serve as Earth's wise elders, patiently watching humanity stumble through its toddler phase of development. Rather than harboring resentment toward humans for centuries of hunting and habitat destruction, they maintain compassionate detachment while modeling harmony, cooperation, and presence.Anne shares remarkable stories from her decades leading transformational dolphin and whale retreats worldwide. From spontaneous healings to profound spiritual awakening, these encounters catalyze life-changing shifts in consciousness. One particularly moving account involves her personal grief journey during a retreat in Bimini, when a compassionate dolphin literally "spun" her out of sadness through a playful interaction that dissolved her pain into unexpected laughter. The whales offer particularly powerful lessons about abundance. As Earth's largest creatures, they demonstrate how giving generously creates more for everyone - their nutrient-rich waste nourishes phytoplankton, creating thriving ecosystems that support more fish and krill, not less. This abundance mindset stands in stark contrast to humanity's scarcity programming. The episode concludes with a powerful channeled message from the cetaceans themselves, guiding humans to protect their energy from the chaos and fear currently saturating our world. By selectively filtering what we allow into our consciousness and reconnecting with our inherent wholeness, we can navigate these turbulent times with grace and purpose.Whether you're fascinated by interspecies communication, seeking ancient wisdom for modern problems, or simply drawn to the magical energy of dolphins and whales, this conversation offers a dolphin's eye view of humanity's potential when we align with nature's highest intelligence.Get your free gift from Anne Gordon, Meet Your Dolphin Spirit Guide meditation at DolphinSpiritGuide.comContact Anne Gordon at: https://www.whaleanddolphinwisdomretreats.com/Get ready for the upcoming astrological shifts by getting your own Cosmic Tower! https://thewellnessenterprise.com/product/cosmic-tower/?twe=AquarianWaveIntroducing the Cosmic Tower — a revolutionary energy harmonizing device designed to uplift your space, restore vitality, and bring coherence to your life. But he doesn't ask it. He says: "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him." John 2:2Jesus, however, goes straight to the point, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." John 3:3Since we know:"Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O LORD, Thou dost know it all." Psalm 139:4And"For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him with whom we have to do.
