Joe Gebbia's journey began in Georgia, where his early interest in sports led him to work as a ball boy for the Atlanta Hawks. However, his true passion lay in art, earning him the nickname "art guy" in school as he spent countless hours drawing from comic books. This passion led him to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he discovered industrial design and the work of Charles and Ray Eames. A pivotal moment came when a professor doubted his art project, but Joe secured school funding and proved the professor wrong, showcasing his early entrepreneurial spirit. At RISD, Joe met Brian Chesky, and he felt an instant connection, believing they would create something significant together. After graduation, Joe moved to San Francisco and convinced Brian to join him, leading to the creation of Airbnb. Faced with skepticism and rejection from investors and law firms, Joe drew on his art background to reframe challenges as opportunities. This resilience paid off as Airbnb became a global phenomenon, changing how people travel and connect.Joe's journey at Airbnb taught him invaluable leadership lessons and underscored the importance of creativity and innovation. His artistic sensibility helped him approach problems with a fresh perspective, leading to the creation of Samara, a venture focused on reimagining home design. After Airbnb went public, Joe branched Samara out as a separate company, recognizing the potential in the Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) space.Beyond Airbnb, Joe relocated to Austin, Texas, becoming a minority owner of the San Antonio Spurs and aligning his entrepreneurial pursuits with his passion for sports. Committed to making a positive impact, Joe is passionate about causes such as homelessness and environmental sustainability. He also helped establish the Eames Institute of Infinite Curiosity, reflecting his commitment to fostering creativity and innovation. Joe Gebbia's story is one of resilience, creativity, and a relentless pursuit of dreams, inspiring others to embrace their passions and challenge the status quo.*The Founder Hour is brought to you by Outer. Outer makes the world's most beautiful, comfortable, innovative, and high-quality outdoor furniture - ALL from sustainable materials - and is the ONLY outdoor furniture with a patented built-in cover to make protecting it effortless. I had artist Jordan K. Walker on today and it just so happens that he's the newest addition to Medicine Man Gallery. I don't get to take new artists on very often, especially younger artists (he's only 28, but he paints a lot older). You see, Jordan trained at the Rhode Island School of Design and then came out to the West after he graduated. He was already a naturalist, but since moving westward he's really just fallen in love with the plants,  animals, and the landscape out here. We're going to have our first show for him later this year (October 2023) and this podcast provided a wonderful opportunity to get to really know Jordan. There are going to be a lot of great things that come from this kid. I say "kid" because he is, as far as I'm concerned, a kid in the world of Western art. That being said, this young man is all in and he's got the skills now that most artists need decades of time and effort to develop. The thing is, Jordan has this old-school feel to him and you can sense it right off the bat in the podcast. I recognized it and it's not just me. Others can see it as well, from storied artists to experienced art collectors. I know for a fact if you pay attention to the world of Western art, you'll definitely be seeing him around. Tiarra Bell's Bio: The core of my work is an external reflection of my internal thoughts. I am interested in making furniture that does not only focus on aesthetics but rather creating a body of work that tells a story and communicates a message. I express the inexpressible by using my Biblical beliefs as a premise for my artistic expression. I'm able to translate those verbalized beliefs into something that is visual and tangible. I'm intrigued by how something that's not visual, such as words, ideologies, or ethics can become something that you can plainly see, and touch.

I truly garnered a lot of inspiration from this conversation with Minali, the Co-Founder and Head of Brand at Wild One, because her story is one I can identify with. Like me, she's from a different country, took the International Baccalaureate (IB kids, if you know you know), started her career at Bloomingdale's and is just a creative soul at heart. There's something special about finding a person who reflects your path and background and has achieved success. Look around for those people in your life – they're there. Back to Minali! After a stint at Bloomingdale's and then becoming one of the initial team members at Sweetgreen, the healthy and modern fast casual chain that has taken the US by storm, she landed at Wild One. As a pet lover, I'm obsessed with the thoughtful design and community they've fostered through the brand and she's had a lot to do with that.

Speaking of tension, I just happened to have the chance to talk to Jarrett during a particularly tense time in life right now -- graduate school! We started off talking about what it's like adjusting to being back in Providence, Rhode Island, and Jarrett spoke about the decision to return and what they hope to gain from this experience. Jarrett also listed their artistic influences, remembered life growing up in the South, explained what people tend to get wrong about art, and more.
